Edwin F. Sharp Jr.

MILFORD, Del. - Edwin F. Sharp Jr., 75, of Milton and formerly of Rutland, Vt., died Aug. 8, 2000, in Milford.

He was born May 31, 1925, in Malaga, N.J., son of Edwin and Virginia Sharp.

Mr. Sharp graduated from Asbury College in Kentucky.

He and his brother owned and operated Sharp Offset Printing and Academy Books Press, both in Rutland.

While living in Vermont, he was a member of the Rutland Historical Society and a photographer for the Rutland Herald. He was the first lay person to be president of the New England Jurisdiction Commission on Archives and History and served on several local and regional church committees, as well as attending the Baltimore United Methodist Conference.

He was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church in Milford. He was also a member of the Delaware Conference on Archives and History as Curator Emeritus. When moving to Delaware in 1987 he became curator of Barratts Chapel until 1991.

Mr. Sharp is survived by his wife of 17 years, Mary Ann Varchol Sharp of Milford.

A graveside service will be held in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hanover, N.J., at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation Inc., 1501 N.W. 9th Ave., Bob Hope Road, Miami, Fla.,33136-1494.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 South Bradford St., Dover.

James C. Romano

James C. Romano, 85, of Rutland, died Aug. 8, 2000, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home.

He was born Dec. 22, 1914, in Rutland, son of Paschal and Nellie (Paolucci) Romano.

Mr. Romano graduated from Rutland High School in 1933.

He married Marion Stone in 1951. She died in 1966. He married Myrtle "Issy" Ross in 1968.

He was the president of Romano Brothers Trucking Co., a family-owned business, for several years until it was sold to J.P. Noonan Transportation Co. in 1981.

Mr. Romano was a member of St. Peter's Church, American Legion Post 31, a 50-year member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Rutland Lodge of Elks 345.

He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid skier. He was a member of the Proctor-Pittsford Country Club, where he was club champion in 1952. He also enjoyed fly fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle; a son, James M. Romano of West Woodstock; a brother, Alfred P. Romano of Mendon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his first wife; a brother, Michael Romano; and a sister, Louise Cassin.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Florence G. Parker rites

The graveside service for Florence G. Parker, 87, who died Aug. 4, 2000, at Mountain View Genesis Elder Care Center, was held Tuesday in Evergreen Cemetery by the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison, assistant pastor of Christ the King Church.

George W. Harvey

SPRINGFIELD - George W. Harvey, 91, died Aug. 7, 2000, at Springfield Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Jan. 18, 1909, in Rochester, son of Julian and Ethel (Robinson) Harvey.

Mr. Harvey attended schools in Rochester and Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1927.

He married Clara Davis in Springfield on June 5, 1937.

He worked for the Fellows Gear Shaper Corp. as an expediter for more than 34 years, retiring in 1970. For several years he and his wife owned and operated Harvey's Greenhouse out of their home.

Mr. Harvey was a member of the First Congregational Church and a longtime member of the Springfield Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, Lodge 42.

His hobbies included gardening and fishing, and he was an avid railroad enthusiast.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce A MacDougall of Plymouth and Barbara J. Burton of Springfield; a sister, A. Louise Dodge of Charlestown, N.H.; a brother, Vernon Harvey of St. Petersburg, Fla.; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his wife, who died in 1987; and a brother, Urban Harvey.

The funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Peter V. Marsden, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Chapel.

Contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at the First Congregational Church, 77 Main St., Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

J. Andre Bourdon Jr. rites

FERRISBURG - The Mass of Christian Burial for J. Andre Bourdon Jr., who died Aug. 3, 2000, was held Tuesday at noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury by the Rev. John McDermott, pastor. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Cornwall.

Organist was Don Corbett.

Bearers were Frank Broughton, Mike Sparks, John Angier, Phillip Angier, James Angier and Kim Kinney.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.

Peter N. Louras

Peter N. Louras, 77, died August 8, 2000, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 23, 1922, in Rutland, son of Nicholas C. and Amalia (Alexandrides) Louras.

He graduated from Rutland High School.

He married Madeline Piccini on Feb. 27, 1949.

Mr. Louras owned and operated Louras' Store on West Street for 43 years until his retirement in 1989.

He served in the Army Medical Corps in England during World War II.

Mr. Louras was active in community affairs, serving as a member of the Rutland City Board of Alderman and the Rutland City Planning Commission and was a justice of the peace.

He was also a member of the Rutland American Legion Post 31, the Rutland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648 and the Rutland Elks Lodge 345.

Mayor John P. Cassarino proclaimed Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, as Peter N. Louras Day.

Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons, Peter N. Louras Jr. of Orinda, Calif., and Dr. John C. Louras of Rutland; two daughters, Andrea Edwards of Rutland and Stephanie Gaston of Newtown, Conn.; two brothers, Gus Louras and Nicholas Louras of Rutland; four sisters, Despina Louras and Marie Frisch of Rutland, Antoinette Candello of Keene, N.H., and Georgia Bartlett of Cambridge, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Louras and Kuriakoula Carignan; and a grandson.

A private funeral service and burial will be held on Saturday.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home.

In Mr. Louras' memory, the Louras family is establishing The Louras Family Foundation, a non-profit foundation that will support philanthropic causes in the city of Rutland.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to The Louras Family Foundation, care of Mr. George Means, Acting Treasurer, P.O. Box 326, Rutland, 05702.

Robert E. Graf

PAWLET - Robert E. Graf, 84, died Aug. 9, 2000, at his home in Rupert.

He was born Nov. 5. 1915, in Rupert, son of Georgianna (Leach) and Robert Graf.

He graduated from Mt. Hermon in 1934 and St. Lawrence University in 1938.

Mr. Graf served for 24 years in the Vermont Legislature representing Rupert, Pawlet and Wells and was a justice of the peace. He was vice president of Soil Conservation and past president of Vermont Farm Bureau.

A mason and shriner, he was a member of Modern Woodman of America, the Bennington County Regional Commission and the Lady Bird Johnson Beautification Project.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lois (Rees) Graf; three daughters, Marcia Russo, Vicki Graf and Cindi Roberts; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel in the Mettowee Valley Cemetery in Pawlet by the Rev. William Johnstone.

A reception will be held at the Graf home after the service.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the Robert Graf Conservation Fund, care of Harvey Carter, 4758 Chelsea Road, Corinth, 05039.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, N.Y.

Viola F. LaPlaca rites

FAIR HAVEN - The funeral Mass for Viola F. LaPlaca, 92, who died Aug. 7, 2000, at Sager's Nursing Home, was held Wednesday at Our Lady of the Seven Dolors Catholic Church. Burial followed in St. Bridget's Cemetery in West Rutland.

Organist was Nancy Wetherby and soloist was Richard Frazier. Readers were Jim LaPlaca and Teresa Reed, grandchildren.

Bearers were Jim LaPlaca, Michael LaPlaca and Terry Morse of Fair Haven, Rob Reed of Essex Junction, Mark Liuo of West Rutland and Dr. Thomas LaPlaca of Rutland.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home of Fair Haven.

Joseph Lulek rites

The memorial service for Joseph Lulek, 92, of Rutland, who died July 30, 2000, at the Eden Park Nursing Home, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Tossing Funeral Home.

Richard E. Dufresne

BENNINGTON - Richard E. "Rick" Dufresne, 44, died Aug. 8, 2000, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

He was born in Bennington on May 27, 1956, son of the late Winfred and Marion (Knights) Dufresne.

He was educated in Bennington schools.

Mr. Dufresne married Deborah Weeks on Aug. 11, 1984, in Bennington.

He worked for various construction firms and at Southern Vermont Orchards. His also worked for the town of Bennington.

Mr. Dufresne was a former member of the Bennington Fire Department. He was active in sports with both the Bennington Little League and MAYAA football.

An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies included hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah Dufresne of Bennington; a son, Jeremiah E. Dufresne of Bennington; five sisters, Theresa Mattison of Burlington, Deborah L. Dufresne of Pownal, Patricia Luczinski of North Adams, Mass., and Rose Marie Gabert of Bennington; six brothers, Winfred Dufresne Jr., Stephen Dufresne, Robert Dufresne, Timothy Dufresne, Christopher Dufresne and Armond Dufresne, all of Bennington; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Dufresne was predeceased by a sister, Sherri Ann Dufresne, who died in 1966.

The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Friday at 11:30 a.m. with Deacon Penny Hawkins of St. Peters Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will be held in the Woodford Cemetery.

Friends my call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home tonight from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program or the Vermont Chapter of the American Heart Association through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Members of the Bennington Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday at 6:45 p.m. to conduct memorial services.
