Beulah E. Cararra

Beulah E. Cararra, 82, of Cuttingsville died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Mountain View Genesis Center.

She was born in Castleton on April 2, 1918, the daughter of Mable (Sweeney) Dumas.

She worked for Cornish Wire Co., Rosen-blatt Dress Co. and Foley's Laundry.

She was treasurer and secretary and a member of Shrewsbury Sno Birds Snowmobile Club.

Survivors include her husband, Louis Cararra; a son, Don L. Cararra of Cuttingsville; three brothers, Sherwin Dumas of Cambridge, N.Y., Frederick Dumas of Shrewsbury and Merle Dumas of Poultney; five sisters, Frances Donovan of Cossayuna, N.Y., Peg Stone of Swanton, Patty Hyjek of Ludlow, Veronica Jordan of Hampton, N.Y., and Ruth Cararra of Rutland; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Frannie Mae Cararra, who died in 1983; and several brothers and sisters.

Friends may call at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland today from 4 to 7 p.m.

A funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Christ the King Church.

Burial will be at a later date in Northern Cemetery in Shrewsbury.

Jane E. Maciejewski

WALLINGFORD - Jane E. Maciejewski, 51, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born in Danby on Sept. 9, 1949, the daughter of Anthony and Pricilla (Stevens) Macheski.

Mrs. Maciejewski was raised in Wallingford, attended local schools and graduated from Wallingford High School.

Mrs. Maciejewski worked for Tambrands in Rutland and most recently operated a home catering and bakery business in Wallingford.

She was a member of St. Patrick Church and was a longtime member of the Prudential Committee for the Wallingford Water District.

Survivors include a sister Dorothy Kupusta of Danby; three brothers, Donald and Joseph Marcheski of Danby and Thomas Marcheski of Nevada; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours.

A funeral service is pending for Friday at St. Patrick Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Danby Congregational Church, Steeple Fund, care of Marion Stone, RD, Danby, 05739.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Aldous Funeral Home.

Lillian K. Metcalf

A funeral service for Lillian K. Metcalf, 82, of Rutland, who died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2000, will be held today at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church.

Burial will be at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Achievement Center, 88 Park St., 05701.

Forrest Dewey Woods Sr.

PETERSBURG, N.Y. - Forrest Dewey Woods Sr., 72, a former resident of Rutland, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, in Brunswick, Maine.

Funeral services are pending with Aldous Funeral Home.

Alta C. Thayer

ARLINGTON - Alta Catherine Thayer, 96, died Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at her home.

She was born in Ontario, Canada, on Aug. 18, 1904, the daughter of Albert and Frannie (Lee) Ott.

Her family relocated to Vermont in the early 1900s. She graduated from Bennington High School.

She married Royal Thayer in Wallingford in 1929.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Red Mountain Chapter 41 of Arlington.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Hoyt of Arlington; a brother, Lawrence Ott of Wallingford; and one sister, Mildred Woodstone of Wallingford; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1991.

There are no calling hours.

A funeral will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Federated Church in East Arlington with the Rev. Joan N. O'Gorman, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in Bailey Hall.

Burial will be private and at a later date in Danby Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arlington Rescue Squad, in care of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, 05250.

Evelyn Louise Sherman

SUNDERLAND - Evelyn Louise Sherman, 86, died on Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, at her home.

She was born in Bennington on Oct. 6, 1914, the daughter of George and Nettie (Sharkley) Sargood.

She received her education in local schools.

She was a registered nurse in Colorado and Mississippi during World War II. She later returned to Vermont in 1948 and lived in Arlington.

She married Howard W. Sherman in 1941 in Springfield, Mass.

Survivors include a son, Michael H. Sherman of Bennington; two daughters, Marsha S. Wilkins and Linda M. Sherman, both of Sunderland; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sherman was predeceased by three brothers, Frederick, Burton and Truman Sargood; and four sisters, Gladys Weeks, Lillian Hall, Louise Sargood and Dorothy Cullinan.

There are no calling hours.

A funeral will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Federated Church of East Wallingford with the Rev. Joan N. O'Gorman, pastor, officiating. A reception will follow in Bailey Hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to Arlington Rescue Squad or the Second Chance Animal Shelter, in care of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, 05250.

The Sullivan Family Rites

BENNINGTON - A funeral for Richard, 55, Harriet, 51, Ashley, 18, Tiffany, 14, and Amanda Sullivan 10, and Joseph Sullivan-Knapp, 6 months, who all died Dec. 17, 2000, at their home, was held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. He was assisted by the Rev. Laurence Olszewski, pastor of Sacred Heart de Sales.

Music was under the direction of organist Donald McMahon.

Words of remembrance were offered for Richard Sullivan by Mike Seere; for Harriet Sullivan by Cindy Dufour-Dean; for Ashley Sullivan by Sharon Shea-Keneally; for Tiffany Sullivan by David Adams; for Amanda Sullivan by JoAnne McGarrahan; and for all the members of the Sullivan family by Harriet Sullivan and her brother Aaron and sister Nicole Pierce.

A large delegation of faculty and staff from Catamount Elementary, Mount Anthony Middle School and Mount Anthony Union High School performed an honor guard.

A procession followed the funeral that included busses from Dufour Escorted Tours in honor of Harriet Sullivan.

Bearers for Richard Sullivan were Donny Gabrus, Ben Godkin, Kevin Becker, Tony Barthooldi, Dave Langlois, Steve Dennis and Jeff Crawford. For Harriet and Joseph the bearers were Mike Conia, Gary Harding, Tim Webster, Randy Thomas, Dick Cole and John Nelson. Bearers for Ashley were Dan Lucy, Dave Berrio, Wayne Goddard, Matthew Julius, C.J. Burgess, Ed Flecter and Dan Sleeman. Bearers for Tiffany were Jeremy Davis, Ryan Davis, Michael Julius Jimmy Burgess, Anthony Epps and Rodney Guetti. Bearers for Amanda were Tony Bleau, Jim Guerino, David Wright, Jeff Harbour, Mike Serre and Andy Hall.

Many people who attended the services were representing, Mount Anthony Union High School, Mount Anthony Middle School, Catamount Elementary School, the Mount Anthony wrestling teams, Southwestern Vermont Health Care, the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, Dufour Escorted Tours, Hannaford, Stanley Tools, Price Chopper and classmates of the Sullivan children.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Louise S. Stearns

LUDLOW - Louise S. Stearns, 96, died on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Stearns was born April 30, 1905, the daughter of Eugene and Bessie (Mandigo) Stoddard.

She graduated from Black River Academy in 1923 and later from Keene Normal School in 1925. She attended New York University, School of Education, in New York City and Plattsburg Teachers College and Buffalo Teacher College summer sessions.

She taught in elementary grades in Hancock, N.H., Port Jarvis, N.Y., and Ludlow.

Survivors include a son, David W. Stearns of Ludlow; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, J. Richard Stearns, who died in 1991; and a son, John W. Stearns of Cavendish.

Friends may call on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Adams and Kenney Funeral Home.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions mat be made to the Black River Historical Society, High Street, Ludlow, 05149.

Phillip W. Lees

WOODSTOCK - Phillip W. Lees, 82, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2000, at Lebanon Center Genesis Eldercare in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Methuen, Mass., the son of Thomas and Anna Lees.

He graduated from Amesbury High School in 1935 and attended Governor Dummer Prep School in Byefield, Mass., before entering Middlebury College in Middlebury.

He served in the Army Air Corps 73rd Fighter Squadron. He served in the central Pacific, including the Okinawa Campaign. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal before being discharged as first sergeant in 1945.

He worked at Merrimack Hat Company and later for the Bailey Company in Seabrook, N.H., as a purchaser. He retired in 1982.

He married Patricia Wenzel, who died in 1986. Following her death, Mr. Lees moved to Woodstock. He later married Esther Frost in 1992 in Essex Junction.

He was a member of the Main Street Congregational Church in Amesbury, where he was superintendent of Sunday School, chairman of the deacons, and a board member of the trustees. He was a former precinct representative and a member of the finance committee. He was chairman and headed the drive for building three schools in Amesbury. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the Amesbury Public Library.

He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Woodstock Country Club. His hobbies included music and football.

Survivors include his wife Esther of Woodstock; a daughter, Sandra Cassano of Andover, Mass.; two sons, Peter Lees of Tilton, N.H., and Sen. Brian Lees of East Longmeadow, Mass.; two grandsons; two step-granddaughters; and a great grandson.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Phyllis Chipman and Florence (Ruby) Williams.

Friends may call Wednesday at 2 p.m. at his home at 26 Pleasant St., Woodstock.

A funeral will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Main Street Congregational Church in Amesbury.

Burial will follow in Bartlett Cemetery.

The Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard H. Lockerby

ATHENS - Richard H. Lockerby, 75, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Springfield Hospital.

He was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Grafton, the son of Gordon and Bessie (Gonyeau) Lockerby.

He attended school in Grafton and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Ethel Long on Nov. 22, 1953

Mr. Lockerby worked as a logger for Norm Lake in Grafton and at Green Box in North Walpole, N.H., and was a foreman at Tenny's Lumber Mill in Saxtons River. He retired in 1990 but continued to work part time at Tenny's Lumber Mill.

He was a member of Bellows Falls American Legion and also the Bellows Fall VFW.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his fish pond.

Survivors include his wife, three sons, Keith of Athens, Thomas of Saxtons River and Samuel of Athens; two daughters, Denise Rounds of Springfield and Sherri Lockerby of Westminster; and eight grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Lockerby; and by a sister, Ruth Maguire.

There are no calling hours.

A funeral will be held today, at 2 p.m. at Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls with the Rev. Harold Noyes, officiating. Burial will follow at Cambridgeport Cemetery.
