TONYA SUE DEMAR

MILTON -- Tonya Sue DeMar, 25, died Friday Oct. 19, 2001, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

Tonya was born in Burlington on Sept. 11, 1976, the daughter of Brenda DeMar.

She graduated from the Essex Junction Educational Center in 1998

She is survived by her parents, Kevin and Brenda (DeMar) Brown of Milton; her brother Chad of Milton; her grandmother Juanita DeMar of Essex; several uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends from the Howard Community Services.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Ronald Soutiere in the Minor Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday morning from 10 to 11 in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Rt. 7 S. in Milton.

EMIL BITTERLICH JR.

MILTON - Emil Bitterlich Jr., 78 died Sunday Oct. 21, 2001, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness.

Emil was born in Queens, N.Y. on Sept. 14, 1923, the son of Emil and Emily (Schmidt) Bitterlich.

On Oct. 15, in 1044, Emil married Edith Sauer in St. Johns Lutheran Church in Richmond Hill, Queens.

He had worked as a mechanical engineer for IBM, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Mason's of Chatham, N.Y., belonging to Columbian Lodge #98.

Emil was also an amateur radio operator, he was known over the HAM radio waved as call letters N1GMU.

In addition to his wife Edith, Emil is survived by his children Bill Bitterlich and his wife Louise of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Linda Thomas and her husband Dell of Waxham, N.C., Barbara Patnode and her husband Garry of Georgia; eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by great-grandson Tyler Chaplin-Mara.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Memorials in Emil's memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 12 Hurricane Lane, P.O. Box 485, Williston, Vt., 05495 or to a charity of ones choice.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

EVELYN THERESA COTA

COLCHESTER -- Miss. Evelyn Theresa Cota R.N., aged 92, born March 16, 1909, passed away with grace at the Green Mountain Nursing Home Oct. 18, 2001, surrounded by her family. She had been a resident of 3 Cathedral Square, Burlington and previously lived in Williston, Essex, St. Albans, and Swanton.

She was born in Swanton, the daughter of the late Jerome and Georgianna Rose (Bushey) Cota.

Evelyn attended nursing school at The Boston City Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1938. She returned to St. Albans, and was on the staff of the St. Albans Hospital and then Kerbs Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1970. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Parish for a number of years.

Although Evelyn had no children of her own, she regarded her nieces and nephews as 'treasures.' As a nurse on the OB/GYN floor she was present at all of their births. They affectionately called her Nannie and fondly remember special days spent with her, the knitting lessons after lunch, her treats, vanilla cookies with raisins, ribbon candy at the holidays, New Year's Day dinner with their favorite vanilla graham cracker pie for dessert. Her stories of early life with her sister and brother on the farm will live with them always, After retiring she moved to Essex with her sister, Elsie, to be closer to her family. She was a communicant of Holy Family Parish. She moved to Whitney Hill in Williston and then to 3 Cathedral Square. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Elsie Perry, age 99 of 3 Cathedral Square. Her niece, Ramona (Perry) Ravenelle, Bernard Ravenelle and the nephews and nieces of her late brother, Stanley. They are Raymond and Shirley Cota of Essex and their sons Gregory and Stephen Cota; Lorraine and Jim Manley of Milton and their children, JV and Lynn Manley, Mark and Jeffrey Manley and Bradford and Jen Wright; Donald and Diane Cota of Grand Isle and their children, Sarah and Kevin Cota and Jason, Curtis and Krista Corse; Doris and George Bergeron of Essex and their children Karen and Julie; Robert Cota and his wife Becky Miller, Judy and Mark Willis of Shelburne and their children, Kelly and Sara.

She was predeceased by her brother and sister-in-law, Stanley A. and Juliette (Granger) Cota and a brother-in-law Frank Perry.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The Vermont Heart Association, 12 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495 or the Visiting Nursing Association, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, Vt. 05446.

Funeral services were held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Burlington, Monday, Oct. 22, at 1:30 p.m. Calling hours were Sunday, Oct. 21 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home, 251 Shelburne Rd. in Burlington and interment was at the family lot in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Swanton.

ALICE ROSE GREGOIRE

GEORGIA -- Mrs. Alice Rose Gregoire, age 92, died Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 17, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in St. Michelle, Que., Canada, daughter of 12 children of the late Joseph and Purisma (Lanctot) Trudeau.

She married Germain Gregoire on Sept. 26, 1926. Mr. Gregoire died July 27, 1974. She was very active in the daily operations of their dairy farm.

She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and was very active with the Ladies of St. Anne, Franklin County Senior Citizens and was a former member of Holy Angels Mothers Club and the Banner Grange. She loved playing cards and was an avid bingo player. She enjoyed baking and took many prizes in baking contests, especially with her famous orange chiffon cake.

Her survivors include her daughter Germaine Webb of Rutherfordton, N.C.; two sons and their wives, Armand and Janet Gregoire of Georgia, Maurice and Rosemary Gregoire of Jekyll Island, Ga.; her son-in-law Cortland LaVallee, Sr. of Williamsville, N.Y.; a brother Leo-Paul and his wife Madelienne Trudeau of Torrington, Conn.; sisters-in-law Cecile Nichols of Fairfax, Dorothy Trudeau of Sandy Hook, Conn.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; several dear friends including her special dear friend and care giver Doris LeClaire of Georgia. Besides her husband, Germain, she was predeceased by her daughter Annette LaVallee on Oct. 6, 2001; sisters Laura Strait Shaker, Marie Rose Seibert, Anna Trudeau; brothers Leo, Isidore, Amede, Patrick, Donat, Emile, and Noel Trudeau.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7-9 Monday. Interment will be in the Gregoire family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may consider Masses or a memorial to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle., St. Albans, 05478. Arraignments are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

SHEILA COLUMB STANLEY

FRANKLIN -- Sheila Columb Stanley, 63, a lifelong resident of this community died Thursday afternoon Oct. 18, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Sheila was born in Franklin, March 2, 1938, the daughter of the late Alfred Frank and Edna Mae (Roddy) Columb. She graduated from Franklin High School as well as the Community College of Vermont receiving her associate's degree in Office Management. On February 23, 1963 she married Gary Stanley who survives her.

For the past several years Sheila worked in the Real Estate Profession and was most recently associated with Poquette and Bruley, agents for Caldwell Banker in St. Albans. Earlier she had worked nearly thirty years for the State of Vermont in several different capacities. She was a member of the St. Albans Rotary Club, Vermont Board of Realtors, Franklin Home Dem Group and the Green Mountain Draft Horse Association. Sheila was also a devoted parishioner of St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls as well as Saint Mary's Parish in Franklin where for many she served as the church organist choir director and religious education teacher. Sheila enjoyed gardening, photography, horseshoes, horses, playing the piano, singing and writing poetry to celebrate special occasions. She will always be remembered for her great sense of humor.

In addition to her husband Gary Stanley of Franklin, Sheila leaves two daughters, Corinna Stanley and her fiance Scott Korhonen of Highgate and Roberta Stanley of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; three sons, Patrick Stanley of Milton, Samuel Stanley of Winooski and Terrance Stanley of Franklin; two sisters, Imogene Rainville and her husband Andrew of Franklin and Mary Korzun of Manchester, NH; two brothers, Cedric Columb and his wife Marjorie of Swanton and Alfred Columb and his wife Cathy of Laconia, New Hampshire. Also surviving several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents Sheila was predeceased by a brother-in-law, John Korzun Jr. in 2000.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, October 22, 2001 at 11 a.m. from Saint John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 62 Missisquoi Street, Enosburg Falls The pastor, Father Gerard Leclerc will be the principal celebrant and homilist. Concelebrant will be Father Bernard Bechard, SSE, pastor of Saint Mary's Parish in Franklin. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday October 21 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Sheila's memory may be made to Leukemia Society of America, Upstate New York / Vermont Chapters, 6 Automation Lane, Albany, New York 12205

SHIRLEY E. ABARE

SWANTON -- Shirley E. Abare, 72, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 17, 2001, in the VerDelle Village Extended Care Facility in St. Albans Town.

Shirley was born in St. Albans, Jan. 14, 1929, the daughter of the late John and Elmira (Thibault) Abare.

She attended Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans and graduated in 1971 from the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health School of Practical Nursing. Previously she had been employed as the Credit Manager of the Sears and Roebuck Catalog Store in St. Albans and at W. T. Grants in Northampton, Mass.

She retired from the state of Massachusetts in 1986, after more than 17 years as a Senior L.P.N. While working at the Belchertown, Mass. State School, she became an Emergency Medical Technician as well as excelling in nursing. Over the years she received many awards including the Superintendents, Friends Association, Board of Directors and the Governor Michael Dukakis awards. At her retirement she was given a letter from Katherine Willey, R.N. director of nursing services, which read in part, "I appreciate your constant support of the goals of your department and will miss your ready smile and warm words of encouragement." Later, in 1986, she became employed at the VerDelle Village Extended Care Facility for two full years and eight summers -- spending winters in Florida. Nursing was very important to Shirley and she lived by the Florence Nightingale Pledge.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hi-Swans Senior Citizens, presently serving as president; St. Albans Senior Citizens, National AARP, Retired State County Municipal Employees of Boston, Mass., and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post 778 in Swanton.

Shirley leaves her companion of 39 years, Mary Gladden of Swanton, as well as a special niece, Brenda Meyers; her husband, Edward, and their adult children Edward, Kathleen, Elizabeth and Brendan.

Also surviving are four sisters and one brother, Rose and Reginald Baker, Dorothy Allard Lawyea, Wyona Hemond of St. Albans, Margaret and Robert Runge of Ft. Myers, Fla. and Edward and Mary Abare of San Diego, Calif. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, who as children were very important to her. As they became adults with lives of their own and distance apart she didn't see them as often.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her sisters, Laura Abare, Ethel Abare Puro and an infant sister, Helen, and one brother, Donald Abare killed during WWII in England.

Shirley was helped through her recent illness with gall bladder cancer by God, family, friends and her physicians and staff especially, Dr. Salomone, Dr. Shulman, Dr. Christian Thomas of the Vermont Center for Cancer Medicine, The Reverend Marsha Hoecker, Northwestern Medical Center, and VerDelle Village.

A Eucharistic Service will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 38 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Marsha Hoecker, rector, will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the funeral. Gifts in Shirley's memory may be made to Northwestern Medical Center (For cancer patients) in care of Heather Sargent, Upper Fairfield Street, St. Albans, 05478; VerDelle Village Extended Care Facility, Sheldon Road, St. Albans 05478; or to Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton, Vt. 05488.

JACQUELINE LUMNAH MORRIS

ZEPHYRHILLS, FLA. -- Jacqueline Lumnah Morris, 62, of Zephyrhills died Sept. 18, 2001 at home surrounded by her family.

She taught us volumes about acceptance, faith, and peace, and she had the most radiant smile all through her illness.

Jackie was born April 25, 1939 in St. Albans, Vt. the daughter of Floyd and Maxine (Depatie) Lumnah, she was raised in Enosburg Falls, Vt.. She was a graduate of Enosburg High School and Trinity College. She resided in the Essex area until moving to Florida in 1997.

Jackie had many talents and interests, and her generosity influenced many lives. She was an active organizer and participant in Marriage Encounter and Pre-Cana and was also involved in church choir in most every parish she and her husband attended. Jackie was a eucharistic minister in her current parish, St. Joseph's of Zephyrhills.

She was a wonderful cook, an enthusiastic singer, and a talented seamstress. Her Christian faith and volunteer spirit served as a role model; she warmed and touched many lives.

Jackie is survived by her husband of 41 years, Raymond G. Morris Sr. of Zephyrhills; daughters Carol Morris of St. Albans, Patricia Crowley of Oregon, and Catherine Clark of Underhill; a son Raymond G. Morris, Jr. of Texas; six grandchildren; a sister, Johanna Lumbra of East Fairfield; and stepsisters Ellen Jacobs, Patricia Cairns and Barbara Wolcott. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marianne, and a sister, Elenor Ladue Colburn.

Her family is grateful to the compassionate, supportive staff and volunteers of Hernando-Pasco Hospice, who enabled Jackie to remain at home with her family and retain her dignity to the end of her illness.

Donations in Jackie's memory may be made to Heranando-Pasco Hospice Inc., 12107 Majestic Boulevard, Hudson, Fla. 34667. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Oct. 27 at 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church in Essex.
