Allen N. Berg rites

The memorial service for Allen N. Berg, 74, of Rutland, who died Feb. 1, 2001, at his home, was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Edward A. Hackett Jr., pastor, officiating.

Pianist was Ellen Wakker accompanied by the Sanctuary Choir.

Words of remembrance were offered by family and friends.

Ushers were Linda and Jack Mackin.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.

Julie A. Savery rites

The funeral for Julie A. Savery, 29, of Clearwater, Fla., and Rutland, who died Jan. 31, 2001, in Nevada, was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church in Rutland with the Rev. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in East Clarendon Cemetery.

Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Elise Bushey Cassarino.

Ministers of the altar were Joseph Tilden, James Davidson, Robert Tedesco and Alfred Flory.

Reader was James Davidson. Words of remembrance were offered by Stephen Noble of Clearwater, an uncle, and Joseph Tilden, a neighbor.

Bearers were Joseph Savery, a brother, John Savery, an uncle, Lisa Garrow, Todd Noble, Bubby Noble and Nigel Noble, all cousins.

Prayer services were held Monday evening at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland by Audrey Murdock, associate pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church, and Joseph Tilden, eucharistic minister of St. Peter's Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Lila M. Hodge rites

CLARENDON - The funeral for Lila M. Place Hodge, 93, who died Feb. 1, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was held Tuesday at the Aldous Funeral Home with Arnet Mathers, pastor of the Rutland Seventh-Day Adventist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Mountain View Cemetery in Claremont, N.H.

Pianist was Wilma Campbell and vocalists were Heather Yendell and Sonny Young.

Reader was Gary Kinne. Words of remembrance and words of reflection were offered by Elder R. Lenbert Cheney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 158 Stratton Road, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Milton E. Pritchard rites

FAIR HAVEN - The funeral for Milton E. Pritchard, 93, who died Feb. 3, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was celebrated Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Ashley Meade, pastor of the Dresden Baptist Church in Clemons, N.Y., officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Organist and soloist was Peg Ashline.

Reflections were offered by friends of the family.

Fraternal services were conducted by the Eureka Lodge 75, F&AM, of Fair Haven.

The family received friends at the United Methodist Church Hall in Fair Haven following the services.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home.

Edward P. Doyle

BENNINGTON - Edward P. Doyle, 55, of Bennington and Sanford, Maine, died Feb. 6, 2001, in Sanford of a heart attack.

He was born Jan. 17, 1946, in Bennington, son of Edward J. and Margaret R. (Clark) Doyle.

He received his education in Bennington and graduated from the former Bennington Catholic High School.

Mr. Doyle was employed at Sprague Electric Co. in North Adams, Mass., for many years, and at the time of his death was employed at Vishay-Sprague Co. in Sanford.

He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Bennington Lodge of Elks 567. He was also a longtime secretary at the Elks. Mr. Doyle was an honorary member of the Eagle Hose Co. of the Bennington Fire Department and served as secretary of the Eagle Hose for many years.

Mr. Doyle was an avid Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan. In earlier years he enjoyed playing golf and held the distinction of having two holes in one on two consecutive days at the Mount Anthony Country Club.

Survivors include a sister, Kathleen A. Monroe Jr. of Walloomsac, N.Y.; four nieces and two great-nieces; and a great-nephew.

He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph R. Doyle.

The funeral will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. where the funeral Mass will be celebrated. Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The vigil service will be offered Thursday evening.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church Renovation Fund through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

All members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the funeral home Thursday evening to pay respects to the family: Bennington Elks Lodge 567 at 7 p.m. and Bennington Fire Department at 7:30 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

Catherine Corcoran

NORTH BENNINGTON - Catherine Corcoran, 90, a well known resident of North Bennington and longtime educator, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.

Charles D. Oakes

WOODFORD - Charles D. Oakes, 71, died Feb. 5, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born July 23, 1929, in Pownal, son of Kenneth and Elizabeth (Jordan) Oakes.

He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Mr. Oakes married Katherine Youngengel on May 28, 1953, in Bennington.

He was a mechanic. In earlier years he and his sister and brother-in-law operated British Motorcycle Sales in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. Later he and his son, Ronald, owned and operated Oakes Motorcycle Shop in Woodford.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran, serving with the 103rd Combat Engineers.

Mr. Oakes was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose 1233 of Bennington.

He was an avid motorcycle enthusiast and competed professionally in motorcycle races where he received many awards. He was a member of the Tri-State Motorcycle Club. He enjoyed NASCAR and was an avid Boston Celtics fan.

Survivors include his wife of Woodford; two sons, Robert M. Oakes of South Burlington and Ronald D. Oakes of Woodford; a daughter, Jennifer Turkenkopf of New York City; Deborah Ernst of Readsboro; a brother, Bryan Oakes of Bennington; three sisters, Catherine Goodrich of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Agnes Flynn of Troy, N.Y., and Zane Tetreault of Tenino, Wash.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two grandchildren; and a sister, Marion Hicks.

The funeral will be held Friday at noon at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Demasi officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

Ellen K. Major

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Ellen Kareen Wardwell Major, 55, died Feb. 5, 2001, at the Inova-Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.

She was born Sept. 24, 1945, in Hanover, N.H.

She was a resident of Prince William County for more than 29 years.

She graduated from Springfield School of Nursing in Springfield, Mass.

Mrs. Major was employed as a nurse at the Inova-Fairfax Hospital for 22 years.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Major of Woodbridge; a daughter, Jennifer E. Major of Woodbridge; a stepdaughter, Renee Jarman of Mechanicsville, Md.; four sisters, Susan Holmes and Melanie Minard, both of Windsor, Vt., Penny VanWeort of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Pam Hoffmaster of Linden, Va.; two brothers, Elwin Houghton and Roy Houghton, both of Windsor, Vt.; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Wardwell in 1995; her mother, Marjorie Wardwell Houghton in July 2000; her father, Evan Houghton in 1990; and her natural father, Gordon Wardwell in 1945.

The funeral will be held Thursday at the Mountcastle Funeral Home in Dale City. The memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Old South Church, Main Street, in Windsor, Vt.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Tower 9 Nursing Education, INOVA Fairfax Hospital Tower 9, 3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, 22042-3300, in care of Joyce Agricola PCD.

Frank D. Clifford

RANDOLPH CENTER - Frank D. Clifford, 92, formerly of Randolph Center, died Feb. 4, 2001, at his daughter's home in Avon Park, Fla.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Bernard E. Barcomb

Bernard E. Barcomb, 61, of Rutland, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 16, 1939, in Chateaugay, N.Y., son of Bernard and Doris (Curtis) Barcomb.

He married Leora Blair on April 26, 1997.

He was a former resident of Alburg, Montpelier and Vernon, Conn., relocating to Rutland in 1970.

Mr. Barcomb was employed by Mal Tool for 37 years, retiring in September 2000, when he started working for Bond Auto Parts.

He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion, Eagles Club in Fair Haven and Loyal Order of the Moose 1122. He was also a former member of the Italian Aid Society and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Barcomb was an active league bowler in the "Mixed Nuts" and Moose leagues, and a 45-card player, playing on the Moose Club team. He loved baseball and was a loyal Yankee's fan.

Survivors include his wife of Rutland; four daughters, Barbara Allen of Rutland, Brenda Shaw of Vernon, Conn., Bridget Trombley and Bonnie Henry, both of Pinellas Park, Fla.; three sisters, Paula Curtis and Paulette Pulisfer, both of Montpelier, and Germaine Ditlien of Texas; four brothers, Ricky Curtis of Barre, Reid Curtis of Florida, Rene Curtis of Alburg and Donald Barcomb of New York; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Joyce Barcomb.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 N. Main St., Rutland. Members of the Loyal Order of the Moose 1122 will hold a fraternal service Friday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Moose Heart, in care of Loyal Order of the Moose, 78 Center St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Harlan D. Lester

Harlan "Bud" D. Lester, 76, of Rutland, a recent resident of the Meadows, died Feb. 7, 2001, at Mountain View Center Genesis Elder Care in Rutland.

He was born May 18, 1924, in Rutland Town, son of Walter and Irene (Burns) Lester.

He attended Rutland High School and graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy.

Mr. Lester married Patricia Hamilton. She died in 1999.

He was employed by General Electric Co. for 23 years.

He was a World War II U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Mr. Lester was a member of St. Peter's Church, American Legion Post 31 of Rutland, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Loyal Order of Moose.

Survivors include a son, David A. Lester of Hydeville; three daughters, Barbara Havilland of Wichita, Kan., Debra Stanton of Camarilla, Calif., and Carol Ricketts of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Carley Zsido of Rutland; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Church in Rutland with the Rev. John Hamilton, a brother-in-law, pastor of St. John Vianney Church in Burlington, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Cheney Hill Cemetery in Rutland Town.

Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Contributions may be made to Mountain View Genesis Activities Fund, Haywood Avenue, Rutland, 05701, or to the Meadows Activities Fund, Gleason Road, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
