Dorothy A. LaFountain

MONKTON - Dorothy A. LaFountain, 80, died Feb. 27, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Beverly.

She was born July 3, 1920, in Starksboro, daughter of William and Edith (Emerson) Butler.

She and her husband, Kenneth LaFountain Sr., owned and operated a farm in Monkton for 36 years. Her husband died in 1986.

Mrs. LaFountain was a member of the Monkton Fire Department Auxiliary, the Farm Bureau and Bristol Grange.

Survivors include two sons, William LaFountain of Starksboro and Kenneth F. LaFountain Jr. of Monkton; two daughters, Beverly Chapman of Monkton and Phyllis Hill of Starksboro; a sister, Bertha Sherman of South Bristol; four brothers, Harold Butler and Arthur Butler, both of South Bristol, Lawrence Butler and Ralph Butler, both of Middlebury; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.

Contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, Route 7 North, Middlebury, 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Bernadette R. Parker

EAST POULTNEY — Bernadette R. Parker, 59, died April 13, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Arlene M. Winchell

GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Arlene M. Winchell, 48, died April 13, 2001, at Glens Fall Hospital after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 3, 1953, in Glens Falls, daughter of Leonard and Ella Mae (VanGuilder) Winchell.

Survivors include her companion, Wayne Burch Sr.; their two children, Trudy and Wayne Burch Jr. of Granville; two brothers, Charles Winchell of Granville and Leonard Winchell of Middle Granville; six sisters, Peggy Beneton, Elsie Stone and May Winchell, all of Fair Haven, Vt., Clara Fredette of Fort Ann, Josephine Burch of Hartford and Flora Heath of Granville; three grandchildren; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 8 p.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville. Burial will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Granville Rescue Squad, Granville, 12832.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville.

Michael W. O’Rourke

HAMPTON, N.Y. — Michael William O’Rourke, 74, died April 13, 2001, at Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Utica, son of Michael William and Anna Mae (Fitzgerald) O’Rourke.

He was employed as a supervisor with the building and grounds department at Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling for 26 years, retiring in 1991.

Mr. O’Rourke was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War with the 73rd Armored Tank Battalion.

He was a member of the Crippen Fellows Post 50, American Legion, in Castleton, Vt., a former member of the Pawling Fish & Game Club, and was active in the local Boy Scouts and Little League Association in Pawling.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Rita (Fortier) O’Rourke of Hampton; two daughters, Shari Orton of Dover Plains and Kelly O’Rourke of Pawling; a son, Sean O’Rourke of Wingdale; two sisters, Jane Egan and Eileen Coburn, both of Castleton, Vt.; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Denise Marie O’Rourke in 1978; a son, Michael William O’Rourke in 1988; and a sister, Mary Shoemaker.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton, Vt., with the Rev. J. Charles Durham, parish priest, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Castleton at a later date.

Calling hours will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 N. Main St., Fair Haven, Vt.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Beverly A. Loso rites

WEST RUTLAND — The funeral service for Beverly A. Loso, 64, who died April 11, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center, was held Friday at St. Bridget’s Church with the Rev. John Herbert, pastor, as celebrant. Concelebrant was the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Rutland.

Organist was Angela Lundrigan and vocalist was Theresa Bartlett.

Minister of the altar was John Clark.

Readers were Francis C. Loso, a son, and Stacia Bullock.

Bearers were Francis C. Loso of Danby, Steven M. Loso of Proctor, Roy J. Loso of Fairfax, Va., and John D. Loso of West Rutland, all sons, Rick Thow of Rutland Town and David Jasmin of West Rutland.

A prayer service was held Thursday at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Herbert.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Edward E. Landon Jr.

Edward E. “Bud” Landon Jr., 81, of Rutland, died April 13, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending for Tuesday with the Clifford Funeral Home.

Carleton H. Clement

SPRINGFIELD — Carleton H. Clement, 76, of North Springfield, died April 13, 2001, at Springfield Hospital.

He was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Boston, Mass., son of Louis and Laura (Zeigler) Clement.

He received his education in the Boston area, graduated from Bates College and received his master’s degree from Keene State College.

Mr. Clement married Patricia Wilder in September 1948, in Ipswich, Mass. They moved to Springfield in 1954.

He was employed as a teacher at Riverside Middle School in Springfield, retiring after 32 years of service. After his retirement, Mr. Clement became a published cartoonist. Later, watercolor pastoral scenes became his interest.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic in Europe. He received the Purple Heart when wounded during the invasion of Normandy.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield, graduating from the Diocesan Studies Program and serving as a licensed lay reader and lay preacher. He and his wife directed the Rock Point Summer Conference for the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont in Burlington. He also served on the board of directors for the Springfield Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. Clement was an accomplished painter and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include a son, Jonathan C. Clement of Tucson, Ariz.; two daughters, Susan C. Crandall of Plymouth and Lucinda C. Cobb of Barre; a brother, Louis Clement of Sterling, Va.; a sister, Gail Morrison of Tilton, N.H.; six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Cole Cemetery in Ipswitch, Mass.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 33 Fairground Road, Springfield, 05156, or to Brookwood Estates Activities Fund, School Street, North Springfield, 05150.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Alexander T. Brown

WINDSOR — Alexander Tener Brown, 78, of Walpole, N.H., died April 12, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital following a long illness.

He was born Oct. 9, 1922, in East Orange, N.J., son of Frances Tener Brown Muir and William Thayer Brown Jr. He was also a great-nephew of baseball legend Albert G. Spalding, and of John Kinley Tener, who served simultaneously as Pennsylvania’s governor and president of the National Baseball League during the 1920s.

Mr. Brown was educated at the Fessenden School in Massachusetts, the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut and Yale University.

After the outbreak of World War II and his freshman year at Yale, Mr. Brown served with the American Field Service, driving ambulances for the British Eighth Army in Lebanon, North Africa and Italy. He returned home and joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1944, and resumed his studies at Yale following the war, graduating in 1947.

He was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, and briefly, as a stockbroker. He became director of personnel at Children’s Hospital in Boston, and later did public relations for Outward Bound.

Mr. Brown was an accomplished skier, tennis player, golfer and yachtsman. He crewed on many Newport to Bermuda races and on the inaugural Trans-Pacific race to Hawaii. He cruised for many years aboard his own boats along the New England coast and belonged to several yacht clubs, including the Beverly YC in Marion, Mass., and the Wadawanuck Club in Stonington.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Blomquist Brown of Walpole, N.H.; three children by his first marriage, Frances Brown Holmes and William T. Brown, both of Farmington, Conn., and Alexander B. Brown of Santa Fe, N.M.; a stepdaughter, Sydner Masters Durieux of New York City, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at Sage Chapel on the campus of the Northfield-Mt. Hermon School in Northfield, Mass.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Class of 1941, Hotchkiss School, Lakeville, Conn.

Cynthia P. Gregory

GRAFTON — Cynthia P. Gregory, 93, died April 12, 2001, at the McGirr Nursing Home in Bellows Falls.

She was born Jan. 6, 1908, in Grafton, daughter of Francis and Agnes (Fairbanks) Palmer.

She graduated from Chester High School.

She married Raymond Gregory on Nov. 23, 1940. He died in 1994.

Mrs. Gregory worked with her father in the Palmer Store of Grafton for several years.

She was a life member of the Historical Society of Grafton and gave many additions to the collections of the Society.

Survivors include two sons, Raymond Gregory Jr. and John Gregory, both of Grafton; and two grandsons.

The graveside service will be held at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Caroline H. Derouin

HARTLAND — Caroline Harlow Derouin, 54, died April 11, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born April 15, 1947, in Middleboro, Mass., daughter of George N. and Alice (Cole) Harlow.

She graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

She worked at the St. Mary’s Seminary Library in Houston, Texas for many years. She moved back to New England in 2000 and worked for the King Arthur Flour Co. in Norwich. Most recently she worked for the Sherman Art Library at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Derouin of Houston, Texas; a daughter, Laura Harlow Derouin of Houston, Texas; a son, Benjamin Harlow Derouin of Hartland; two sisters, Evelyn Breck Morgen of East Haddam, Conn., and Nancy Harlow Pejouhy of Woodstock; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.

The liturgy service will be held Monday at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock with the Rev. William P. Gallagher, pastor, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock, 05091.

Kelley Marshall

BRIDPORT — Kelley Marshall, 43, died April 12, 2001, at Porter Hospital after a battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 26, 1958, in Middlebury, son of Barbara (Hartke) and George Marshall Jr.

He was employed as an engine mechanic working on motorcycles and boats.

Survivors include his mother of Bridport; two daughters, Juniper Marshall of Cuttingsville and Samone Marshall of Owenton, Ky.

He was predeceased by his father.

The memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service.
