Edward E. Landon Jr.

Edward E. “Bud” Landon Jr., 81, of Rutland died Friday afternoon at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Danby Jan. 6, 1920, the son of Edward and Mary (Ladd-Millard) Landon Sr.

He was a graduate of Burr & Burton Seminary, class of 1936.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.

Mr. Landon was married July 30, 1949, to Harriet Bowen Landon.

He was employed by E.C. Crosby and Sons Store in Danby and later was production control manager at Vermont Marble Co. for 23 years, retiring several years ago. He also was employed at Cortina Inn of Mendon.

Mr. Landon was a member of VFW Post #648 and American Legion Post #31. He was Past Master of the Hiram Lodge of Danby. He was Past Patron of the Eastern Star Catherine Chapter. He currently was a member of the Center Lodge #34, Gilman Chapter.

He enjoyed camping and hunting and was active with the Boy Scouts.

Surviving are his wife, Harriet Bowen Landon of Rutland; one son, Edward P. “Ted” Landon and his wife, Linda Mattison Landon of Rutland; one sister, Kathryn Butler of Rutland; three grandchildren, Kristie Laferriere and her husband, John, of Rutland; Edward S. Landon of Rutland, and Charles D. Verhoye II and his wife, Lani of New York City; five great-grandchildren, Brandson and Skylar Laferriere of Rutland, and Jelani, J. Jay and Gabrielle Verhoye of New York City.

He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn Landon; a brother, Cecil Landon; and a sister, Helen Connors.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Cass Gilbert.

Burial will follow in Scottsville Cemetery in Danby.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held by Masons of Center Lodge #34 Monday evening at 7 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, Vt. 05701.

Joseph Michael Blair

EAST POULTNEY — Mr. Joseph Michael “Joe Mike” Blair, 28, a lifelong resident of East Poultney, died suddenly Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Poultney, Vt.

Joe Mike was born Oct. 15, 1972, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Francis K. and Pauline (Smith) Blair Jr. He was a graduate of Poultney High School with the Class of 1991 and has been employed as an equipment operator and maintenance man with various construction companies, including the John Russell Construction Co., Vermont Mechanical Construction Co., M & M Construction Co., and, most recently, the T. Buck Construction Co.

Joe Mike was a member of St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church of Poultney, a former member of the Poultney Valley Snowdevils and the Tuesday and Thursday night bowling leagues at Fairwood Lanes in Fair Haven. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by his parents, Francis “Joe” and Pauline Blair of East Poultney, Vt., his companion, Mary Ann Gloss of East Poultney, Vt.; his sister, Jill Miller, and her husband, John, of Fair Haven, Vt.; his niece, Sarah Miller of Fair Haven, Vt., his maternal grandparents, Mr. Romaine “Jud” and Dorothy Smith of Hampton, N.Y.; his cousin, James “Art” Blair of Middletown Springs, Vt.; and also by several aunts, uncles and cousins; his dog, “Mason,” and his two cats, “Patches” and “Buddy.”

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Francis “Frank” and Kay Blair; his uncle, James Blair; and his cousin, Alison Blair.

There will be no visiting hours.

A Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Poultney, Vt. The Rev. Adam Krempa will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Poultney Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Joe Mike may be given to the Vermont State Police Canine Association through the office of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home at P.O. Box 181, Poultney, Vermont 05764.

Floyd C. Sumner

FLORENCE — Floyd C. Sumner, 81, died April 15, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a long illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Ulysses B. Adams Rites

CLARENDON — The memorial service for Ulysses Balch Adams, 69, of Clarendon, who died April 11, 2001, was held Saturday at the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Moston, pastor of the Clarendon “Old Brick” Church, officiated. Burial followed in the East Clarendon Cemetery.

Military honors were provided by American Legion Post 31, with the flag presentation by James Burke and Paul Poljacik.

Donations may be made to the Wallingford Rotary Club, in care of The Paul Harris Rotary Building, Wallingford, 05773, or to a favorite charity.

Joseph N. Gross

Joseph N. Gross, 89, a former resident of Reading, Pa., died Saturday at his daughter’s home in Killington.

He was born in Reading on Sept 19, 1911, the son of Nicholas and Regina (Harter) Gross.

He was in vaudeville from 1929 to 1937 as a member of the Four Casting Pearls and performed in the U.S. and Europe, including a performance for the Queen of England.

Mr. Gross was employed by Motor Freight Express and was a member of the Teamsters, retiring in 1976.

Survivors include a longtime friend and companion, Annabelle Hoff of Reading; a daughter, Dianne DeSimone of Killington, and a brother, Thomas Gross of Wyomissing, Pa.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary, in 1968 and by a son, Michael, in 1995.

There are no services scheduled at this time. Burial will be at Gethsemane Cemetery at a later date.

Contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Cynthia A. Gastwirth

LOS ANGELES — Cynthia Ann (Homer) Gastwirth, 55, died at California Hospital Medical Center on April 11, 2001, after a long illness.

Mrs. Gastwirth was born in New London, Conn., Nov. 20, 1945, the daughter Peter and Margaret Homer.

She was raised and educated in Groton, Conn. She was a graduate of Fitch Senior High School in Groton.

She had been living in the Los Angeles area for the last 20 years.

Mrs. Gastwirth is survived by her sister, Ellen Heyniger of Chester, Vt.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

The Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester are in charge of arrangements.

Glenn R. Lawrence

WINDHAM — Glenn R. Lawrence, 74, of Windham, died at Mount Ascutney Hospital April 14, 2001.

A full obituary will appear in a later edition of the Rutland Herald.

The Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester are in charge of arraignments.

Lois K. Riley

CLAREMONT, N.H. — Lois Kelley Riley, 75, died April 13, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital & Health Center’s Extended Care Facility in Windsor, Vt.

She was born April 11, 1926, in Windsor, the daughter of Vern and Katherine (Ashley) Barton.

She attended school in Windsor.

She married Kenneth Kelley; he died in 1968. She married Charles Edward Riley in 1971; he died in 1980.

Mrs. Riley was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont before moving to California in 1981. She returned to Claremont in 1987.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas G. Kelley of Essex Junction, Vt., and Dale K. Kelley of New Hampshire; a sister, Marvis Haurilick of Windsor, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Plain Cemetery in Plainfield.

The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor is in charge of arrangements.

Marie T. Gendron

BENNINGTON — Marie T. Gendron, 96, died April 14, 2001, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a long illness.

She was born in Arma, Quebec, July 15, 1904, the daughter of Ovide and Amanda Turgeon. She received her education in Arma.

She married Paul Gendron April 1, 1929. He died in 1993.

In earlier years, she was employed at the E.Z. Mill and the Allen A. Manufacturing Co.

She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington and a member of St. Anne’s Society.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing and making braided rugs.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Ann Harrington Lauzon of Bennington; two grandsons, Gary and Tim Harrington of Bennington; four great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Mary Louise Turgeon, Rosa LaCasse and Yvonne Gladue; a brother, Louis Turgeon; and two half-brothers, Joseph Boivin and Gaudius Boivin.

The funeral will begin at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with a funeral Mass. The burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Donations may be made to the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation Activities Fund or a favorite charity through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Hiram E. Brownell Sr.

MANCHESTER CENTER — Hiram E. Brownell Sr., 74, a former resident of Pownal and more recently of Manchester Center, died April 15, 2001, following a long illness.

The Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington is in charge of arrangements.

Adelbert E. Woodard

BENNINGTON — Adelbert E. Woodard, 77, died April 15, 2001, at the Vermont Veterans Home.

The Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur T. Prime

BRISTOL — Arthur T. Prime, 68, died at his home in Bristol Saturday, April 14, 2001.

He was born Jan. 31, 1933, in Bristol, the son of Arthur C. and Alice E. (Shepard) Prime.

He was a member of the Bristol Federated Church.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He married Barbara Estus Jan. 31, 1964.

Mr. Prime served as an area policeman for many years.

He taught hunter safety for many years.

He was a member of Bristol Masonic Libanus Lodge 47, F & AM and Libanus Eastern Star Libanus Charter 47. He was a member of Bristol American Legion Post 19.

Survivors include his wife of Bristol; two sons, Matthew and Daniel Prime, both of Bristol; two brothers, Dean Prime of New Haven and Weldon Prime of Vergennes; three sisters, Jeanie Prime of Connecticut, Anna Palmer of Hinesburg and Charlene Peryea of Bristol, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Bristol Masonic Lodge on North Street. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bristol.

Friends may call at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m.

Donations may be made to the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, Box 754, Middlebury, 05753.
