Luciejane M. Curtis

HANCOCK — Luciejane M. Curtis, 61, died April 19, 2001, at her home.

She was born Aug. 17, 1939, in New Haven, Conn., daughter of Howard and Winifred (Dowd) Carden. She moved to Rochester from Connecticut in 1944 and settled in Hancock in 1946.

She married Leland A. Curtis on June 29, 1957, in Hancock.

She received a plaque from Gov. Richard Snelling for 20 years of dedicated service as coordinator of the Hancock Greenup Day from 1970 to 1990. She was a Vermont delegate to the Republican National Convention in Dallas in 1984 and was Addison County Republican Committee chairperson for many years. Mrs. Curtis had also served as chairperson of the Hancock Bicentennial Committee, was a 4H Club leader, and taught religious classes for many years. She served on the Hancock Planning Commission and was a member of the board of directors of Stagecoach. She was a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society and drove children to Head Start for many years. Mrs. Curtis was also a member of the Olive Branch Society, Moss Glen Grange, and St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Daughters.

She enjoyed entertaining and flower gardening.

Survivors include her husband of Hancock; two sons, Frank Curtis of Hancock and Charles Curtis of Spokane, Wash.; a daughter, Deborah Ann Estabrook of Braintree; two sisters, Winona Walker of Hancock and Rebecca Soutiere of Jeffersonville; two brothers, Howard Carden Jr. and Joseph Carden Sr., both of Hancock; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Roxanne Curtis Bowen.

The funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Rochester with the Rev. John Whalen officiating. Burial will be in Hancock Village Cemetery at a later date.

Calling hours will be held Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home, where the Catholic Daughters will offer a prayer service at 7:45 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Rescue Squad, Rochester, 05767.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Monique Amyot Sharp

Monique Amyot Sharp died April 17, 2001, peacefully at her home in Sante Fe with courage and grace following a brief illness. Much loved soulmate and best friend to her husband, John A.V. Sharp. Loving mother of Natalie Janson (Gary Janson), Eric Pothier (Katie Sloan) and Derek Sharp. Adoring Nana to Ryan and Isabel Janson, Madeleine and Nicholas Pothier. Daughter of the late Paule Desrochers Walkden and Jean Louis Amyot. Dearest daughter-in-law of Frances R. Dodds. Sister-in-law of Tony Newman and Cynthia and Frank Wilkinson. A memorial service in celebration of Monique’s life will be held at The Collins Clarke Chapel, 5610 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal, Quebec, on Friday, April 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated to The Hospice Center, 1400 Chama Street, Sante Fe, New Mexico, 87505.

William J. Lacey rites

MIDDLEBURY — A Mass of Christian Burial for Will iam J. Lacey, who died April 17, 2001, was held Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. John McDermott, pastor, as celebrant.

Organist was Kevin Parizo.

Pallbearers were Yogi Lussier, Stanley Counter, William Highter, Leo Lacey, Larry Lacey Jr. and Jon Pominville.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Lawrence A. Grupe

DAVENPORT, Fla. — Lawrence Arthur “Larry” Grupe, 54, died April 21, 2001, at home after a battle with brain cancer.

He was born Oct. 5, 1946, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Henry and Margaret (Egan) Grupe.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1965.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965 to 1969, attaining the rank of sergeant.

Mr. Grupe was a member of Christ the King Church and served as an altar boy.

He married Joan M. Clark on Jan. 3, 1971. They lived in Rutland until moving to Florida in 1993.

Mr. Grupe and his wife opened and operated the Talk of the Town Beauty Salon for 10 years. He was employed by Moore Business Forms in Rutland for 27 years. Since 1993, he had worked in transportation for Walt Disney World and was the chief steward for the Teamsters.

He is survived by his wife of Davenport; his parents of Clarendon, Vt.; a sister, Patricia Guyette of Rutland Town; three brothers, Robert Grupe of Clarendon, William Grupe of Lafayette, Ind., and Donald Grupe of Fort Myers, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at the Polo Park Community Center in Davenport at the convenience of the family. A memorial service in Vermont will take place in mid-May. Burial will be in East Clarendon Cemetery.

Alice J. Gates

WELLS — Alice J. Gates, 92, a resident of Wells and a former longtime resident of Bennington, died April 21, 2001, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington following a short illness.

She was born in East Dorset July 17, 1908, the daughter of Ward and RoseBelle (Sears) Becker.

She received her education in the Wells and North Bennington schools.

She married Winnie E. Gates in 1925 at the North Bennington Congregational Church. Mr. Gates died in 1965.

Mrs. Gates was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington and was active in the Wells United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Green Mountain Seniors in Wells.

She was an avid card player and a social member of the Wells Chapter of the Modern Woodmen of America. She enjoyed crafts and crocheting afghans.

Survivors include two sons, Edward Gates of Bennington and George Gates of South Windsor, Conn.; three daughters, Joan E. Gates, with whom Mrs. Gates made her home in Wells, Barbara Bushee of Bennington and Eleanor Pulver of Wells; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral will be held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jane Knight, pastor of the Wells United Methodist Church, and the Rev. George Prouty, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington, officiating. Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the Organ Fund at the First United Methodist Church in Bennington or to the Wells United Methodist Church, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Charlotte F. Dumas Rites

NORTH POULTNEY — A funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in Poultney for Mrs. Charlotte Frances Dumas, 68, who died April 18, 2001. The Rev. Adam Krempa, parish priest, officiated. Burial will take place at a later date in the St. Stanislaus Kostka Cemetery in West Rutland.

Organist was Ruth Czar.

Bearers were Lenny Savage, Carl Ackley, Scott Swenor, Kenny Barber, Andie LaFayette and Louie Rousseau.

A wake service was conducted Friday evening by the Rev. Krempa at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Ned S. Calvi Rites

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral service for Ned Sarafino Calvi, 86, who died April 19, 2001, was held Sunday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest, officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Organist was Nancy Wetherby, accompanied by the church choir.

Soloist was Jacob Mashak.

Bearers, all grandsons, were Ryan Mahar, Benjamin Calvi, Calvin Willard, Gabriel Calvi and Seth Willard.

Honor guard members were from the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Assembly 2539 of Fair Haven.

The Durfee Funeral Home of Fair Haven was in charge of arrangements.

Julia E. Bonilla

HUBBARDTON — Julia E. “Judy” (Pike) Bonilla, 74, died April 21, 2001, at Sager Nursing Home in Fair Haven.

She was born in Whitingham Oct. 7, 1926.

She was a house cleaner for many years. She volunteered at Rutland Hospital.

Survivors include her care providers, Margaret and David Wilton of Hubbardton, with whom Mrs. Bonilla has lived for many years; a daughter, Catherine Bonilla of Pittsfield, Mass.; two stepsons, James Bonilla of Rutland and Michael Bonilla of Barre, and several grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Bonilla, in 1978, and by a twin brother, Carl J. Pike, in 1965.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Clifford Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon.

Friends may call at the Clifford Funeral Home Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sager Nursing Home, 28 Prospect St., Fair Haven, 05743.

Patricia R. Harte

WEST RUTLAND — Patricia R. Harte, 59, of West Rutland died April 20, 2001, upon arrival at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Hartford, Conn., Sept. 8, 1941, the daughter of James and Helen (Pritchard) Jordan.

She was a graduate of Poultney High School and, in 1961, the Rutland Hospital School of X-Ray Technicians.

She married to Michael P. Harte on Sept. 5, 1970.

Mrs. Harte was employed as an x-ray technician, and by Moore Business Forms and General Electric Co.

She was a member of St. Bridget’s Church.

She enjoyed reading.

Survivors include her husband, Michael P. Harte of West Rutland; three daughters, Melissa H. Twoney of Bedford, N.H., Christine Harte of Rutland and Karen Harte of West Rutland; a son, Rourke Harte of West Rutland; a sister, Cathleen Camara of Rutland; and a brother, James Jordan of Poultney; two grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at St. Bridget’s Church in West Rutland. The Rev. John Herbert, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Raphael’s Cemetery in Poultney.

There are no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05446.

The Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland is in charge of arrangements.

Paul L. Hard

FLORENCE — Paul L. Hard, 66, died April 22, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Cheryl L. Hackett

Cheryl L. Hackett, 36, died April 20, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born April 4, 1965, in Rutland, the daughter of Robert and Mary Jane (Pomainville) Burgess.

She was a former resident of Granville, N.Y.

Survivors include her mother and father of Proctor; a son, Michael Miner of Castleton; two daughters, Amy Miner of Castleton and Ashley Hackett of Granville; a sister, Ann Emery of Ludlow; a brother, Kevin Forrest of Rutland, and her grandmother, Rita Colburn of Dixfield, Maine.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Proctor.

Donations may be made to the Memorial Program of the Vermont Kidney Association, P.O. Box 244, Burlington, 05402-0244.

Alice B. Foster

HARTLAND — Alice B. Foster, 97, passed away Friday evening at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor, Vt.

She was born April 19, 1904, in Hartland, Vt., the daughter of J. Glenn and Marion (Stevens) Britton. She lived in Hartland all of her life.

She graduated from Windsor High School in 1923 as valedictorian of the class.

She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper at the Windsor County National Bank for 10 years.

In 1930, she married Wright C. Foster of Jericho, Vt. He carried on the family farm. They also represented five insurance companies from Montpelier at Foster’s Insurance Co. in Hartland for 32 years. They also owned the Hartland General Store for seven years.

Mr. Foster died in 1976.

Mrs. Foster was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Hartland, where she taught Sunday School and served as president of the Ladies Society for a short time. She also served as secretary of the former Windsor Women’s Club and was also a member of the Hartland Women’s Club.

She enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting.

She is survived by a daughter, Louise M. James of Hartland; one granddaughter; four grandsons; nine great-granddaughters, four great-grandsons; and one great-great-grandson.

Funeral services will be held at a later date, to be announced in Hartland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hartland Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 403, or the Hartland Fire Station, Hartland, Vt. 05408.

The Knight Funeral Home in Windsor, Vt., is in charge of arrangements.
