SENATOR D. FRANCIS HOWRIGAN

FAIRFIELD -- D. Francis Howrigan, 84, beloved father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather has gone to be with the Lord and join his loving wife, Neva, and son, Billy. He passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001 at his home with his devoted family by his side. He was born in Fletcher, May 12, 1917, the son of the late William and Margaret (McCarthy) Howrigan. On June 17, 1941, he married Neva LaRocque at St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield. She predeceased him July 24, 1998.

Francis was a well known Fairfield dairy farmer and former State Senator, serving in the Senate from 1975 to 1994. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church. At age 20 he was elected selectman for the town of Fletcher, a position he held for three years. He then served as selectman for the town of Fairfield for 50 years. He held various other positions throughout the years, including Director of Northern Farms, Past Chairman of Franklin County Soil and Natural Resources Commission, Agway, Franklin County Farm Bureau, Vermont Dairy Council, Franklin County and Vermont Sugarmakers Associations, Northwest Regional Planning Commission, Vermont Milk Promotion Board, St. Albans Cooperative Creamery and The Democratic Party. He is the President of the Owl Club, and was the first recipient of the prestigious George D. Aiken "Agriculturist of the Year" award.

Francis is survived by his loving children; Michael D. and Judy Howrigan of Enosburg, Margaret and John Pelletier of Georgia, Jeanne Howrigan of St. Albans, Patricia and Marc Reynolds of St. Albans, Raymond J. and Mary Howrigan of Fairfield, Thomas A. and Sue Howrigan of Fairfield, Rita Magnan of Fairfax, Ellen Howrigan of Burlington, John D. Howrigan of Fairfield, Kate and Scott Baldwin of Burlington, and Joan and Jack Hungerford of St. Albans; his devoted grandchildren, Shannon Kane, Molly Swainbank, Michael Howrigan, Michele Paquin, John, Andy, and Moria Pelletier, Aaron, Brian, David and Sarah Reynolds, Liza, Nicole, Ryan, Sam, and Ben Howrigan, Matthew, Luke, Tyler, and Alex Howrigan, Hannah Decker, Justin Magnan, Bronwyn Decker, and Kurt Magnan, Abby and Ethan Baldwin, Seth, Will, Josh, and Derek Hungerford; his great-grandchildren, Samantha, Sabrina, Chelsea, and Whitney Kane, Caleb, Jenessa and Noah Swainbank, Connor and Brayden Howrigan, Austin Magnan, Sylas Decker, and Joshua Reynolds.

He also leaves three brothers, Robert and his wife, Virginia Howrigan, Dr. Thomas G. Howrigan, Harold and his wife, Anne Howrigan and all of Fairfield; five sisters, Mary and her husband, Bernard Connor of Fairfield, Rose and her husband, Emmett O'Connell of Burlington, Loretta and her husband, Henry Magnan of Fairfield, Kathleen Connor of Burlington, and Teresa and her husband, John Manahan of St. Albans and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Neva, and his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Francis William "Billy" Howrigan on March 2, 1991, and a brother, Sgt. Raymond Howrigan, USMC, killed in action during WWII at Iwo Jima.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at noon in St. Patrick's Church. Interment will follow in the family lot at St. Patrick's Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Francis Howrigan Fairfield Fund, c/o Aaron Reynolds, Peoples Trust Company, Kingman Street, St. Albans, Vermont 05478. Visitation will be on Friday from 1 to 8 P.M. at Francis' home, Vermont Route 36, Fairfield. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

PAUL T. (HONEY) SAVOY

MILTON -- Paul T. (Honey) Savoy, 77, died Monday Oct. 8, 2001 at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness.

Paul was born on March 24, 1924 in Burlington, the son of George and Lucia (Robar) Savoy.

On Jan. 1, 1947, he married the former Beverly Jean Ryan, the daughter of the late Tracy and Rena Ryan of Milton. Paul joined the U.S. Navy and served during WWII, Korea, and Vietnam, He retired in 1968, following 21 years of service. Paul was the manager of the Milton General Store for a number of years, and also worked for Acme Paint and Glass in Essex. A lifelong resident of Milton, Paul belonged to the American Legion Post #57, the VFW Post #07848 and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He is survived by his wife Beverly of Milton, by his children, Stephen and his wife Carrie of South Burlington, Craig and his wife Theresa of Milton, his daughters Lani Dulude and her husband Andrew of Colchester, and Lori Russell and her husband Randy of Westville, Ill., by 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his sisters Irene Trayah of Milton, and Catherine Dupee of Colchester, and by several nieces and nephews.

Paul's family would like to thank the VNA of Colchester, the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, and the wonderful aides and nurses who took such great care of Paul during his long illness, especially Cheryl Papazoni, Danielle Recine, and Jodi Landry.

A funeral service will be held Sat. Oct. 13, 2001 at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, with burial following in the Milton Village Cemetery.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Savoy's memory may be made to either the Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, 05446, the Milton Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 324, Johnson, 05468; the Lamoille Ambulance, P.O. Box 342, Johnson, 05656; or to the American Parkinsons Disease Assoc., Vt. APDA Chapter, P.O. Box 788, Milton, Vt. 05468.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, Oct. 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Rt. 7, So. in Milton.

MAVIS BASHAW JANES

RICHFORD - Mavis Bashaw Janes, beloved wife, mother, sister and grandmother, died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at her home.

Mavis was born in Richford, March 3, 1927, the daughter of the late H. Norris & Mary (Sears) Bashaw. She graduated from Richford High School in 1945 and the St. Albans Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 (where she was enrolled in the Army Cadet nursing program). Part of her training took her to Boston City Hospital for several months.

In 1949 she married M. Hayden Janes, also of Richford. They celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary this past June 22nd.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richford, where she had served as a Deaconess and Sunday School teacher. She was a member and Past Worthy Grand Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Missisquoi Chapter # 51.

For many years she was involved as a board member of the Franklin County Home Health Agency and the Richford Health Center, and helped coordinate nurses for Red Cross blood drawings in Richford.

Mom was a member ofthe Richford Mothers Club, Girl Scout leader and driver for the RHS girls' softball team.

Mom's legacy lives on in her unconditional love for her family and friends. We shall remember and cherish her unaccountable loving deeds including the sweaters, afghans, mittens and embroidered work she made and shared with us.

In addition to her husband, Mavis's family includes her three daughters and their husbands, Susan Janes Hartman and Randy of Richford, Connie Janes Beyor and Avery of Highgate, and Heather Fodge and John of Jericho. She will always be loved and remembered by her grandchildren: Carrie Osborne, Avery Beyor Jr., Kathryn Osbome, Matthew H.J. Beyor, Corynn Fodge, Peter Fodge, Emily Hartman, David and Dawn Beyor; a great granddaughter, Autumn; two brothers and their wives, Carroll and Audrey Bashaw of Orange City, Fla, and Aubrey and Marie Bashaw of East Windsor, Conn; one sister, Janet Faye Edwards of Enfield, Conn; a brother-in-law, Charles Quentin Janes of Boston, Mass.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 at the Richford First Baptist Church with Rev. David Beal officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Spears Funeral Home at 140 Main St. in Richford.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602 or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-4688.

HAYDEN LOUIS ERNO

SWANTON -- Hayden L. Erno, 79, a longtime resident of 102 Grand Ave. in Swanton Village, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon, Oct. 5, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St . Albans.

Hayden was born in Samsonville (Enosburg), April 12, 1922, the son of the late Louis and Myrtle (Pelkey) Erno. He graduated from Bellows Free Academy St. Albans and on April 14, 1945 married the former Ginger Fadden who survives him.

He worked as a rural mail carrier for the United States Postal Service retiring after nearly 40 years of service. In earlier years he worked for the United Customs Service, Vermont Loan Company, Hungerford and Sons and the former Smith Funeral Home.

As an active resident of the Swanton community he served as a longtime member of the Swanton Village Fire Department and volunteered several years on the Swanton Summer Festival Committee including acting as festival parade chairman. Hayden was a devoted parishioner of the Memorial United Methodist Church where he belonged to the Men's Club, sang in the church choir and was a former member of the Board of Trustees. He faithfully served his country in the United States Army during WWII and was a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post One of St. Albans.

He will always be remembered for his role in playing Santa Claus during many Christmas seasons throughout the Swanton and St. Albans areas.

In addition to his wife, Ginger, of Swanton, Hayden leaves his daughter, Pam Smith and her husband Tom of Lake Ridge, Virginia and a son, Kim Erno of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Melissa and Molly Smith of Boston and Kathryn and Michael Erno of Washington, D.C.

A sister Florence Cote predeceased him in 1978.

Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Tuesday evening, Oct. 9, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the Memorial United Methodist Church, Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Donavee Copenhaver and The Reverend Robert Hullstrung will co-officiate. A reception to greet family and friends will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. Interment will take place at the convenience of the family. Gifts in Hayden's memory may be made to, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. KATHLEEN WINONA YOUNG

MILTON -- Kathleen Winona Young, 83 died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness, surrounded by her loving family.

Kathleen was born in Hardwick on April 30, 1918, the daughter of Barney and Lena (Rabideau) Hale. Her childhood memories were shared with five sisters on beautiful Vermont farms. She shared 37 years of marriage with Donald Frederick Young, who predeceased her in 1974.

Mrs. Young is survived by her children, Jacqueline Bilodeau of Milton and Wayne Young and his wife, Marion, of Highgate. She is also survived by her grandchildren Mark and Denise Young, Steve and Candie Young, Gary and Sharon Young, Kassie and Robert Lamphere, Dawn and Pat Francis, Keely and Ernie Stanhope, Kelly and David Gruver, and by 15 great-grandchildren, by her sisters Ruth Rice of Milford, Conn., and Bette Barronton of Atlanta, Ga., three brothers-in-law, Douglas Young, Sonny Young, and Willie Young, and three sisters-in-law, Kathleen spears, Shirley Young, and Margaret Bero. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by identical twin sons in infancy, her son-in-law Rene Bilodeau in 1995, and her sisters Idress Benjamin, Doris Bourgeois, and Helen Bellingeri.

She was the ultimate success as a domestic engineer. The scents of her canning, homemade pies and big family meals will never be forgotten. She dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Her love of music filled her home as she raised her children, her talents for dance were lovingly taught to all her grandchildren as they stood atop her feet to feel the steps that she took.

She was the center of all her families successes and trials, her advice and caring ways will be missed by all who loved her as "Ma."

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon. Memorial donations in Kathleen's memory may be made to Milton Rescue, P.O. box 15, Milton, Vt. 05468

Friends may call on the family on Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Rt. 7 S. in Milton.

H. JEAN JACKSON

ST ALBANS -- Mrs. H. Jean Jackson, age 75, died early Friday morning, Oct. 5, 2001 in the Birchwood Terrace Health Care in Burlington.

She was born in Lima, Peru, Nov. 30, 1925, daughter of the late Henry and Maud (Rhode) Christiansen. She came to the United States at the age of 20 and settled in the Seattle, Wash. area. She was employed as a sales representative and book purchaser in book stores, both in Washington and later in San Francisco, Calif. She retired in 1979 and moved to the St. Albans area.

After moving here, she became very active with the Foster Grandparents Program in the St. Albans Town School.

She was married to William Preston Jackson who died in 1979. Her survivors include her sister, Helen DeCora of South Alburg and Palm Beach, Fla.; two nephews, Henry and his wife, Anne DeCora, of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Etienne DeCora of Lexahatchee, Fla.; three great-nieces and nephews Derek, Justine and Gregory DeCora.

Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister Ruth Christiansen Vail.

The family wishes to thank the Birchwood Terrace Medical Team and Dr. Frank Landry for their understanding and guidance.

There will be no public services, at her request. private requests are being entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ANDRE D. JARVIS

ST. ALBANS -- Andre D. "Andy" Jarvis, age 70, died Monday evening, Oct. 1, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care following a brief illness.

He was born in St. Albans Aug. 14, 1931, son of the late Walter and Delia (Remillard) Jarvis. Andy served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Harriet Pilbin on June 18, 1955. He was employed at Guay's Market and, for a short time, a Dowlings, and for the past several years was employed as a store clerk for Blouin's I.G.A. Store in St. Albans.

Andy was a communicant of Holy Angels Church and a very frequent and devoted visitor to St. Anne's Shrine, in Isle La Motte. He enjoyed puttering and tinkering with cars and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of over 46 years, Harriet Jarvis; a son Dan and his wife Mary Jarvis; a daughter Caroline and her husband Bruce Goodbred all of St. Albans; four grandchildren, Sean Jarvis, Caitlin Jarvis, Even Goodbred and Amanda Goodbred; four sisters, Cecilla and her husband Howard Brouillette of St. Albans, Beatrice Godin of Chicopee, Mass., Germaine and her husband Ubald Bourbeau of New Milford, Conn., sister Agnes Lanier, with the Sisters of Holy Cross in Manchester, N.H.; a sister-in-law Theresa Zalor of West Springfield, Mass., several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers, Albert, John, Alfred, and Walter Jarvis, and a sister, Sister Regina Rocheleau.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Interment will be in the Jarvis family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Masses or memorials to the American Cancer Society, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque funeral Home.
