Helen Elizabeth Hawthorne

BARRE CITY - Helen E. Hawthorne, 86, of 1 King Street, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2001, at Central Vermont Medical Center, in Berlin, Vt.

She was born in Troy, N.Y., on June 17, 1914, the daughter of George Henry and Catherine (Conway) Simmons.

She was married on November 29, 1947, to Jay Waterman Hawthorne in Troy, N.Y. They celebrated 53 years of marriage.

She was a communicant of St. Monica's Roman Catholic Church in Barre, Vt.

She graduated from Catholic Central High School in Troy, N.Y., in 1930.

She was employed as a secretary for Prudential Insurance in Troy, N.Y. During World War II she worked in the surgeon general's office of the Pentagon. Following her marriage, she worked with her husband as a bookkeeper/secretary of their business "Springfield Printing Corp." and then his appraisal business, "Archibald-Hawthorne."

A community minded individual, she was involved in many organizations. When she lived in Springfield, Vt., she was a member and past regent of Court St. Anne Catholic Daughters of America; member and past president of the Altrurian Club; Springfield Hospital Auxiliary and Religious Education of St. Mary's Parish.

After moving to Barre, Vt., in October of 1973, she was a member and past director/treasurer of Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, an active member of St. Monica Catholic Daughters and Church Women United.

She is survived by her husband, Jay W. Hawthorne; her daughters, Catherine G. Hawthorne of Machias, Maine; Mary Helen Hawthorne of Springfield, Vt., and Dorothy H. Halpern, wife of Howard Halpern of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Sally J. (Murchie) Hawthorne of Charlestown, N.H.; six grandchildren, Gregory Halpern of Providence, R.I.; Keith Halpern of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; Ellen Wheeler of Barre, Vt.; Amy Hawthorne of Waltham, Mass.; Aaron Hawthorne of Charlestown, N.H.; and Carrie Childers of Machias, Maine; a great-daughter, Jacqueline of Barre, Vt.; two sisters, Eleanor Purcell of Troy, N.Y.; and Joan Marjorie Gallauresi of Solvay, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Simmons of Watervliet, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Charles Jay Hawthorne; a sister, Dorothy F. Simmons; and a brother, George H. Simmons Jr.

There are no calling hours.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Monica's Church in Barre, Vt., on Tuesday, May 8, at 10 a.m. A graveside service will be held, later that day, at 3 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery, River Road, Springfield, Vt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Helen's memory, may be made to St. Monica's Parish, 79 Summer St., Barre, Vt., 05641, or to Central Vermont Home Health & Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vt., 05641.

The Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, is in charge of the arrangements.

Katharine L. Kuhn

RANDOLPH - Katharine L. Kuhn, 65, died May 7, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Lester Butterfield

MIDDLEBURY - The graveside committal service and burial with military honors for Lester "Buddy" Butterfield, who died Jan. 30, 2001, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery in Middlebury with the Rev. John McDermott, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Francis P. Martin

MIDDLEBURY - The graveside committal service and burial with military honors for Francis P. "Hank" Martin, who died Feb. 27, 2001, will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in West Salisbury Cemetery with the Rev. John McDermott, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Kenneth T. Downey

ORWELL - The graveside committal service and burial for Kenneth Thomas Downey, 77, who died March 10, 2001, will be held Thursday, May 17, in Mount Hope Cemetery in Ticonderoga, N.Y. Members of Independence Masonic Lodge 10 will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Florence Martin

CORNWALL - The graveside committal service and burial for Florence Martin, who died Jan. 30, 2001, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Cornwall with the Rev. Richard Neal, pastor of the Middlebury United Methodist Church, officiating. Guests are encouraged to meet at the cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Robert C. Wilbur Rites

WHITING - The private funeral service for Robert Charles Wilbur, 86, who died May 4, 2001, was held Monday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Albert "Skip" Baltz, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating.

The family and friends gathered at Mountain View Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. in Orwell for the committal service and burial following the service. Members of Independence Masonic Lodge 10 in Orwell conducted the Masonic service.

Pallbearers were Bobby Quesnel and Eric Leno, both of Whiting, Jesse Wilbur and Brent Wilbur, both of Sudbury, Robbie Leno of Orwell and Justin Ladabouche of Pittsford, all grandchildren.

The family received friends at "The Wilbur Farm" in Whiting for a time of fellowship and reflection following the committal service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Howard B. Willard

Howard B. “Howie” Willard, 88, of Rutland died May 15, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

He was born April 12, 1913, in West Rutland, son of Jacob and Sadie Wolinsky.

He graduated from West Rutland High School and attended the University of Vermont.

Mr. Willard married Sylvia Shapiro on Aug. 20, 1945. They made their home in both New York City and Brandon.

He worked for Avon Books in New York City, which was owned by his uncle. He later opened Howie’s Music Store in Rutland and operated Shapiro’s Department Store, Jane’s Dress Shop and The Bargain Center in Brandon for 30 years. Mr. Willard and his wife also operated The Hub in Manchester for many years. After selling his store in Brandon, Mr. Willard worked in public relations at the Brandon Inn, and for the past 15 years, he had served as credit manager and in advertising at Mintzer Brothers Home Center in Rutland.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and served in World War II.

Mr. Willard was a member of the Brandon Rotary Club and the Rutland Jewish Center and also performed with Actors’ Repertory of Rutland. He played both violin and bass with local orchestras.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed music, theater and gardening.

Survivors include his wife; a brother; a sister; and two nephews and a niece.

He was predeceased by a brother.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Rutland Jewish Center, 96 Grove St., Rutland. Burial will follow in the Rutland Jewish Center Cemetery in East Clarendon.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Jewish Center.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.

Lloyd Infant

Isaiah J. Lloyd, son of Christian J. and Sara Joy (Hayes) Lloyd of Rutland, died May 14, 2001, at his residence.

Survivors include his parents of Rutland; maternal grandparents, Louis and Patricia (Daniels) Kunz of Greenville, S.C.; paternal grandmother, Deborah Hayes of Rutland; and great-grandparents, Edward and Alice (Mann) Sweet.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Alan K. Hayes.

The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Bible Church, Grove Street, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Stanley J. Poploski Sr.

WEST RUTLAND — Stanley J. “Poppy” Poploski Sr., 78, died May 14, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in White River Junction.

He was born May 29, 1922, son of Julius S. and Anna (Polit) Poploski.

He graduated from West Rutland High School.

Mr. Poploski was employed by Howe Richardson Scale Co. for 38 years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland, American Legion Post 87 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a former member of the Moose Club.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Moody) Poploski; a brother, Henry J. Poplaski of West Rutland; a sister, Jean Gabriel of Trumbull, Conn.; two grandsons and a great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Stanley J. Poploski Jr. in 1984; and a sister, Sophie Kaldy in February 2001.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.

Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05446.

Bertram G. Andrews

PITTSFIELD — Bertram “Muggs” Guerden Andrews, 77, husband of Margaret Carter Andrews, died May 15, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Funeral services are pending with the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 N. Main St., Rutland.

Catherine A. Mondella

The graveside service for Catherine A. (Jakubiak) Mondella, 86, of Rutland, who died Feb. 15, 2001, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Peter J. Oscielowski

WEST RUTLAND — The graveside service for Peter J. Oscielowski, 79, who died Feb. 8, 2001, will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home.

Sophie H. Kaldy

WEST RUTLAND — The graveside service for Sophie H. Kaldy, 85, who died Feb. 11, 2001, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in West Rutland with the Rev. Frank S. Warzocha, pastor, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Patricia R. Harte

WEST RUTLAND — The graveside service for Patricia (Jordan) Harte, 59, who died April 20, 2001, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Raphael’s Cemetery in Poultney with the Rev. Adam Krempa, pastor, officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Margaret Howley

WALLINGFORD — The funeral service for Margaret Howley, 88, who died May 14, 2001, will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 6, 1912, in Rutland, daughter of William B. and Mabel (Gomez) Howley.

She graduated from Wallingford High School in 1930.

Ms. Howley was treasurer of the Wallingford Fire District for many years. Prior to her retirement in 1976, she had been employed for Central Vermont Public Service Corp. as an office secretary for 32 years.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and charter member of St. Patrick’s Rosary Altar Society.

Survivors include a cousin, Alice Buckland of Rutland; and several other cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wallingford Rescue, P.O. Box 246, Wallingford, 05773.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.
