Mildred C. Buzzell

BENNINGTON - Mildred C. Buzzell, 90, died June 17, 2001, at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation following a long illness.

She was born in Poestenkill, N.Y., June 22, 1910, the daughter of Lesley and Clara (Effland) King. She received her education in West Sand Lake, N.Y., and at Troy High School.

She married Wesley E. Buzzell on Aug. 24, 1929, at the Poestenkill Lutheran Church. Mr. Buzzell died in 1983.

Mr. and Mrs. Buzzell moved from Poestenkill to Bennington after their marriage. Mrs. Buzzell, with her husband, traveled in New England before World War II, repairing buildings for farms held by the Federal Land Bank in Springfield, Mass. During the war, while her husband was in the service, she was employed at Union Carbide Corp. Later she was associated with her husband in the family contracting business for 27 years.

Mrs. Buzzell was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, where she was a former member of the board of administrators. She was president of Circle 4 at the church for many years.

She enjoyed flowers and vegetable gardening.

Survivors include a brother, Raymond King of West Sand Lake, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

Mrs. Buzzell was predeceased by a sister, Gladys Carner.

The funeral will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Bennington on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. George D. Eberly, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Donations may be made to either the First United Methodist Church of Bennington or the Bennington Rescue Squad through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Valeria A. Novak

SPRINGFIELD - Valeria A. Novak, 80, formerly of Dewey Street, died Friday morning at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington following a brief illness.

She was born in Springfield on Dec. 18, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Amelia (Gintof) Hryckiewicz. She attended Springfield public schools, graduated from Springfield High School in 1938 and later attended the Washington School for Secretaries in New York City.

She returned to Springfield, where she was employed by the Bryant Grinder Corp. and later at Britts Department Store and the Springfield Local Telephone Company.

In 1947 she married Raymond Novak of Ludlow. He predeceased her in 1994.

Mrs. Novak had just recently moved to the Terraces Retirement Community in Shelburne, Vt.

Survivors include a son, Justin, daughter-in-law Deborah, grandson, Justin, and granddaughter, Kristine, all of Essex Junction; two brothers, Edward Hryckiewicz of Bradenton, Fla., and Henry Hryckiewicz of Springfield; and by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church in Springfield with the Rev. Douglas Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Father Hawkins will conduct a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Intensive Care Unit at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center, 111 Colchester Ave., Burlington, 05401.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Roland H. Chandronnait

SPRINGFIELD - Roland H. Chandronnait, 70, died June 15, 2001, at his home.

He was born July 31, 1930, in Franklin, N.H., the son of Alfred and Juliette (Rivard) Chandronnait. He attended schools in Laconia, N.H., and made his home there for most of his life.

He was employed as a machinist for the Scott and Williams Co. in Laconia for many years.

For the past six years, he had made his home in Springfield, where he was a member of the Springfield Senior Center.

He enjoyed shooting pool, cribbage and shuffleboard.

Survivors include a son, David R. Chandronnait of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Alfred Chandronnait of Hudson, N.H.; a grandson; a niece and a nephew, and his companion of many years, Evelyn Cleveland of Springfield.

A graveside committal service will take place in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Laconia at a later date.

There will be no visiting hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Senior Center, 139 Main St., Springfield, 05156.

The Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Willard C. Norman

WOODSTOCK - Willard C. Norman, 90, died June 16, 2001, at his home in Woodstock.

He was born March 23, 1911, in Wyckoff, N.J., son of Willard Lee Norman and Lenora (Margarum) Norman.

Mr. Norman was educated in Wyckoff and moved to Sudbury, Mass., where he was a plant manager for the Phillips Petroleum Co. for many years.

He married Jane Way on June 17, 1944. In the 1950s, they moved to Vermont, where Mr. Norman was a salesman for the Calloric Stove Co. for a few years. He was a night dispatch manager for the P&C Grocery Center in White River Junction, retiring in 1976.

He enjoyed skiing, horseback riding and motorboating.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Way Norman of Woodstock; a brother, Noah Norman of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Thelma M. Jacques of Wyckoff, N.J., and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock. Jan Chilek, pastor of the Bridgewater Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Woodstock.

There will be no calling hours.

Donations may be made to the Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society, Cox Road, Woodstock, 05091.

The Cabot Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Anne F. Howe

POMFRET - Anne Fisk "Petie" Howe, 79, died June 15, 2001 in Pomfret.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Ida L. Cilley

CLAREMONT, N.H. - Ida Lula Cilley died June 15, 2001.

She was born in North Sherburne, Vt., Aug. 23, 1915, daughter of James A. and Maude (Shippey) Hall.

She lived in Charlestown for more than 50 years and later in Newport.

She worked for many years at Keil Lock Co. in Charlestown. Her last job before retirement was as a nutritionist at the Sullivan County Nursing Home in Unity.

She was active in the Women of the Moose and at one time was senior regent of the Claremont organization. She was an active member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Claremont.

Survivors include two sons, Steven Walter of Milford, Del., and David Maurice of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Janice Nacel of Plymouth; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Maurice, and a son, Arthur.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. David B. McIlhiney, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery in Charlestown.

There are no calling hours.

The Stringer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Noel E. Despart Jr.

WEST WINDSOR - Noel E. Despart Jr., 68, died June 15, 2001, at Mount Ascutney Hospital & Health Center in Windsor.

He was born Dec. 25, 1932, in Windsor, the son of Noel E. and Annetta (Shedd) Despart Sr.

He attended schools in Windsor and East Hampton, Mass.

He was employed as a carpenter in the Windsor area most of his life. He was self-employed for 10 years.

He was a member of the West Windsor Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years.

Survivors include a son, Gregg A. Despart of West Windsor; a sister, Shirley Orr of Medford, Ore., nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family.

The Knight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen M. Houran

BENNINGTON - Helen Marie Houran, 67, died June 16, 2001, at her home.

She was born in North Bennington on Sept. 3, 1933, the daughter of Kenneth and Jennie Mae (Lane) Rice.

She received her education in local schools.

She was employed at Thompson Mills until it closed.

She married Edward "Bunny" Houran on June 20, 1953, in Bennington.

At age 52, she went back to school to earn her nursing aide certification at Bennington Convalescent Center, currently Bennington Health and Rehab. She left the convalescent center in 1985 and went to work at the Vermont Veterans Home until 1998. She then took a job at the Watson House in North Bennington until her retirement.

Mrs. Houran volunteered at the Harvest Christian Missionary Soup Kitchen in Bennington.

Mrs. Houran enjoyed crafts, gardening and flowers.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Edward J. Houran of Bennington and Daniel Houran of Jackson, N.Y.; four daughters, Annette Denio, Janette Lesser and Christine Mabee, all of Bennington, and Patricia Houran of Manhasset, N.Y.; two brothers; Richard Rice of North Bennington and Kenneth Rice Jr. Of Eagle Bridge, N.Y.; a sister, Dorothy Wilkie of North Bennington; 17 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the White Chapel Cemetery in Bennington with the Rev. Robert Lebert officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Harvest Christian Mission Soup Kitchen through the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Carl R. Blodgett

POWNAL - Carl Robert Blodgett, 76, of Pownal died at his residence on June 15, 2001.

He was born in Bennington March 8, 1925, the son of Carl E. and Alice (Grant) Blodgett.

He received his education in Bennington and graduated from Quaddy Radio School in Maine.

Mr. Blodgett was a World War II Navy veteran. During the war he took part in the D-Day invasion of Normandy and later in the occupation of Japan.

He married Doris King Dec. 20, 1952, in Brattleboro.

He was a supervisor at the Union Carbide Corp. in Bennington for 34 years until his retirement in 1988.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and carpentry.

Survivors include his wife of Pownal; a son, William J. Blodgett of Barre; two sisters, Jeanne Chapman of Bennington and Julianne Galipeau of Shaftsbury; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Blodgett was predeceased by a brother, William G. Blodgett, and by four stepchildren, Sandra Thompson, and Harold, Earl and James Williams.

The funeral service will be private.

Franklin Elliott Black

RUTLAND, Vt. - Franklin Elliott (Blackie) Black, US Marine Corps Veteran of WWII and devoted husband of Ruth L. Black, passed away shortly after midnight, Jun 8, 2001, at Rutland Regnl Med Ctr.

He was born in Winchester, MA Oct 1, 1924 to his parents Oliver Beach Park Black of Malden, MA and Gladys Marie (Goodwin) Black originally of Bay Verte, New Brunswick, Can. He was attending Medford High School, MA when the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into WWII. Joining the US Marine Corps, Dec 8, 1941, he saw action in the British Solomon Islands, South Pacific with the 3rd Marine Div, 3rd Bat, I Company. Wounded in action, Nov 18, 1943 on Bougainville Island, he received the Purple Heart and served most of the duration supporting Bond drives until his Honorable Discharge Apr 10, 1945. He completed high school at Huntington Preparatory Academy, Boston, MA, going on to study for a Bachelor's in Political Science, Masters and PhD of Education at Boston Univ.

He married the former Ruth (Rudy) Lavinia Dodge of Weare, NH, Dec 3, 1949, and after completing his Bachelor's degree they moved to Chester, VT, in 1950 as an insurance adjuster. After his son Gregory Park Black was born in 1954, he returned to school finishing his Masters degree and started teaching in Proctorsville, VT. He went on to teach at Thompson Academy, Boston, MA and became Principal of Enosburg Falls HS, VT in 1957. Blackie went on to be Principal of Yarmouth HS, ME (1965-67); Fair Haven Union HS, VT (1967-69); Sanborn Regional HS, Kingston, NH (1969-75); and Asst Superintendent of Schools, Farmington, NH (1975-77).

Blackie and Rudy retired back home to the Rutland, VT area in 1977 where they have been active supporting Vermont Veterans through the Marine Corps League and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He was a Commander of the Rutland DAV and Judge Advocate for the Dept of VT DAV. Blackie was an avid sailor, enjoyed skiing at Pico Peak, VT, summering at their cottage on Cascumpeque Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the College of Piping, Summerside, PEI, Can.

Blackie is survived by his adoring Wife, Ruth; his devoted son Lt Col Gregory (Black) Parke, USAF Ret, daughter-in-law, Sharon, and grandchildren Taryn, and Alex.

Blackie was cremated Jun 11, 2001 with half of his ashes to be on eternal summer vacation scattered over his beloved Cascumpeque Bay, PEI, Can. The remainder will be interred at a memorial service with full military honors at the VT Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Randolph, VT on Fri, July 20, 2001 at 10:00 am with a reception to follow at 2:00 pm at the DAV Home, 199 Woodstock Ave, Rutland, VT. Those desiring to make remarks at the service should contact his son: Greg at 802-786-5345 or parkegreg@aol.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be offered in memory of Blackie to the "Rutland DAV Chapter 7" with a notation for the "Van Replacement Fund" and sent to Jim Babinski, Adjutant, P.O. Box 567, Bomoseen, VT, 05732 or a donation to the Edson Det, Marine Corps League, P.O. Box 101, Rutland, VT 05701.
