Howard E. Woodin, Jr.
Middlebury, Vermont
Howard Eugene Woodin, Jr., died October 31, 1999. He was born July 2, 1924 in Schenectady, New York, the son of Howard E. Woodin, Sr. and Florence (Hayner) Woodin.
After graduation from Nott Terrace High school he attended Union College where his undergraduate years were interrupted by the Second World War. In 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe in the 99th Infantry, 394th Regiment, K Company. He held the rank of Sergeant at the Remagen Bridgehead and the Battle of the Bulge, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Howard graduated from Union College in 1948 as part of the Class of 1946. He continued in the graduate program at Union and as an Instructor in Biology in 1951.
In 1949 he married Beverly Alice Huber of Scotia, New York. The couple lived in West Lafayette, Indiana until Howard received his Ph.D. in Ecology from Purdue University in 1953. His field research was performed in Colorado and New Mexico where he and Beverly spent summers researching an interspecific association between the Juniper and Pinion Pine that formed the basis for an article eventually published in the journal Ecology. Howard became an Instructor of Biology at Middlebury College in 1953 and was promoted to full Professor of Biology in 1967.
Howard had a love of the out-of-doors and the natural world which filled his life. His career at Middlebury encompassed 32 years of teaching and research filled with enthusiasm and a remarkable personal energy. Never one to wait for things to happen, Howard got them done.
In 1956 he designed the greenhouse attached to the Warner Science Building and raised the capital for its construction. The greenhouse was built with the help of half the entire faculty and one-third the student body. That same year, Howard established the first Biological Radio-Isotope Laboratory at the college under an Atomic Energy Commission Grant. In 1957, he placed a permanent transect at the timberline of mount Marcy in the Adirondacks, so that future effects of climactic change, including acid rain, could be studied. In summers of 1953 through 1956 he worked as research biologist for the Vermont State Fish & Game Service. In 1961, he designed two nature reserves for the Town of Middlebury, the Battell Woods Nature Trail and the Means Woods Nature Reserve. He served as Trustee of the Means Woods for over 30 years and later published a Field Guide to that trail. In 1965, five years before the first Earth Day, he and fellow Professor Rowland Illick developed the Environmental Studies Program, a unique interdisciplinary major which became the model for similar programs at undergraduate institutions across the country. Many student theses from this program were undertaken at the High Pond Nature Preserve, which was developed by Howard that same year, and they reflect the inspiration and guidance of a beloved teacher.
In 1966 Howard was appointed a Director of the Vermont Wildland Foundation. In 1966 also, he took a sabbatical year in Florida at Miami University and its Marine Institute, participating in research aboard the research vessel Pillsbury. From 1967 until 1985 Howard served as coordinator and then director of the Environmental Studies Program and, in 1970, he took on the Old Dominion Chair in Biology.
At Middlebury College, he arranged and led four winter term courses to study the tropical ecologies of Belize and Guatemala. In 1981 he became one of 25 Senior Ecologists certified by the Ecological Society of America. Upon his retirement from the College in 1985 he compiled a complete record of the first 20 years of the High Pond Nature Reserve, providing a concrete record of a remarkable scientific and teaching career.
Howard served for 20 years as a Director of the Middlebury Savings and Loan Association and was also an Associate Director of the Vermont Federal Bank.
In 1985 Howard celebrated 50 years in Scouting. An Eagle Scout himself, he was especially proud that each of his sons also attained that highest Scout rank. Howard led scouting expeditions to Canada and New Mexico, served as camp director at Camp Sunrise in Orwell, Vermont for several summers, and directed many district camporees. He served on the district Executive Advisory Committee and was presented with the Silver Beaver Award.
Howard loved playing the banjo, listening to Celtic music and bagpipes, gardening and cooking. During retirement he spent many hours researching genealogy, collaborating with distant cousins on a novelette of the Woodin family entitled, "New Land for Timothy."
He leaves Beverly, his wife of 50 years, his son David Eugene Woodin who resides with his wife Margo P. Byron in Cairo, New York, grandson Jonathan, his son Christopher Lee Woodin who resides with his wife Jennifer (Campbell) Woodin in Hamilton, Massachusetts, grandson Douglas, and several cousins.
