Emma J. Nurge

BENNINGTON - Emma Josephine Nurge, 84, died July 27, 2001, at Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y., as a result of injuries she had sustained in an automobile accident earlier in the week.

She was born in Oct. 2, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Louise (Keinzle) Jelnek.

She received her education in Brooklyn.

Mrs. Nurge and her husband had owned and operated a television repair service in Baldwin, N.Y., for many years. They moved to Arlington in 1964 where they owned and operated the Valhala Motel on Route 7A.

She had been a grey lady at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington for seven years, and was a member of First Congregational Church of Bennington.

She enjoyed crafts and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen Christiansen of Sandgate; a stepdaughter, Lillian Blaikie of Franklin, N.H.; a brother, Joseph Jelnek of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Martin Hertlein in 1971; and her second husband, Edwin Nurge in 1993, whom she married in 1975; and a daughter, Emma Hertlein.

The graveside funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Sandgate Cemetery with the Rev. Scott Barton and the Rev. John Eusden officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Diabetes Association, Vermont Division of the Heart Association or Bennington Home Health Agency through the Arlington Chapel of Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, 05250.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Arlington Chapel of Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Charles C. Gates

POWNAL - Charles Casper Gates, 83, died July 29, 2001, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 6, 1917, in North Hoosick, N.Y., the son of Charles E. and Susan (Peters) Gates.

He received his education in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.

Mr. Gates married Lillian McIntire on May 10, 1941.

He had been employed at the Watervliet Arsenal during his earlier years, and later by General Cable Co. as an extruder operator for many years.

Mr. Gates served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had been a member of Civilian Conservation Corps, was a member of American Legion Post 13 of Bennington, Pownal Center Senior Citizens where he was past president and currently vice president and trustee, and Al Bain Fan Club.

He was an avid guitarist and had played with several bluegrass bands over the years. He enjoyed sports, was a softball pitcher in the summer leagues and had played for the Bennington Generals. He also enjoyed bingo, bowling and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Randall H. Gates of Pownal; four daughters, Kathleen Stevens of Bennington, Susan Russell of Phoenix, Ariz., Janice Bushee of Pownal and Melinda Onorato of Williamstown, Mass.; a brother, Christopher Gates of Pownal; and two sisters, Elsie Gates of Williamstown, Mass., and Edna Richardson of Hancock, Mass.; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by a son, Herbert C. Gates; a brother, Alfred Gates; and a sister, Hazel Haralambous.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington. Burial will follow in Towslee Cemetery in Pownal.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Members of American Legion Post 13 of Bennington are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. to conduct services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center, through Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Avery H. Thresher

BRAINTREE - The committal service for Avery H. Thresher, 78, who died March 5, 2001, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Lower Branch Cemetery, Route 12A, in Braintree with the Rev. Kathy Eddy officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Glenn E. Durfee Sr. Rites

BRIDPORT - The memorial service for Glenn "Durf" E. Durfee Sr., 80, who died July 25, 2001, was held Monday at Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury with the Rev. Peter O'Leary, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be private at a later date.

Arrangements were under the direction of Sanderson Funeral Service.

Lillian C. Knipes

Lillian C. Knipes, 74, of Rutland, died July 25, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 22, 1926, in Brandon, daughter of Walter and Ruth (Gove) Stone.

She married Julius H. Knipes who died in 1991.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Robert Stone, Ernest Stone and Leon Stone.

The graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in East Clarendon Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Moston officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Erwin R. Dunshee

PROCTOR - Erwin R. Dunshee, 80, died July 31, 2001, upon arrival at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Ruth M. Lavallee

MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS - Ruth Mary Lavallee, 80, died July 31, 2001, at Sagers Nursing Home in Fair Haven after a long illness.

The funeral Mass is pending for Saturday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Middletown Springs.

Arrangements are under the direction of Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Elizabeth J. Laramie

FAIR HAVEN - Elizabeth Jane (Mulroy) Laramie, 74, died July 30, 2001, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born July 20, 1927, in Middlebury, daughter of Alfred and Madolyn (Goulette) Mulroy.

She graduated from Windsor High School in 1945 and Carney Hospital School of Nursing in South Boston, Mass., in 1948 as a registered nurse.

She married Bernard Laramie in 1956. He died in 1990.

Mrs. Laramie was employed as the school nurse for the Fair Haven School District from 1967 until her retirement in 1981.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and a longtime member of Fair Haven Historical Society.

Survivors include her mother of Fair Haven; two daughters, Michelle Charron of Shelburne and Danielle Roberts of Fair Haven; a son, Peter Laramie of Fair Haven; seven grandchildren; and several aunts, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Laramie in 1969.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven with the Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St., Fair Haven.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell St., South Burlington, 05403-9987.

Arrangements are under the direction of Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Bonnie K. Forlenza

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - Bonnie K. Forlenza, 58, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Zephyrhills, Florida.

She is survived by her loving mother, Helen Richards of Zephyrhills, Fla.; a daughter, Dawn and granddaughter, Sydney of Lakeland, Fla.; also, by a granddaughter, Toni Lynn and great-grandson, Tyler of Wells, Maine; her two sisters, Barbara Holmes of Binghamton, New York and Janet Parker of Middletown Springs, Vt.; her brother, Phil of Colorado; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Frank and her father, Donald Richards.

Private funeral services will be conducted at the convenience of her family.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home of Poultney, Vt.

Paul J. Campbell

FAIR HAVEN - The graveside memorial service for Paul Joseph Campbell, 83, a resident of Tallahassee, Fla., and a summer resident of Fair Haven, who died July 24, 2001, will be conducted on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.

The American Legion Post 49 of Fair Haven will provide military honors.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Legion Post 49 Building Fund, 35 Main St., Fair Haven, 05743.

Arrangements are under the direction of Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Corine E. Strom rites

PROCTOR - The funeral Mass for Corine Eva Strom, 94, who died July 28, 2001, was held Monday at St. Dominic's Church with the Rev. Joseph N. Pray officiating. He was assisted by minister of the altar, Leo Pomainville. Burial followed in St. Dominic's Cemetery.

Organist was Angela Lundrigan and vocalist was Theresa Bartlett.

Arrangements were under the direction of Aldous Funeral Home.

Deborah Tartalsky

Deborah Tartalsky, believed to be the oldest resident of Leicester, Vt., died Monday, July 30, 2001, at the age of 100 at her home on Lake Dunmore after a long and fruitful life.

She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel.

Survivors include her daughter, Lea Sneider of New York City and Lake Dunmore; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeremiah and Nonnie Tarr of Rutland; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Mt. Moriah Cemetery in New Jersey.

There will be no calling hours.

Donations in Debbie's memory, may be made to the Rutland Regional Medical Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland, Vt., 05701.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith C. Stock

BRISTOL - Edith Clark Stock, 85, died July 30, 2001, at her home.

She was born March 19, 1916, in Lincoln, daughter of Charles E. and Blanch (Lathrop) Clark.

She opened her home for other people in and around the Bristol area for more than 55 years.

Survivors include a nephew, Lyle Webb Sr. of Salisbury; a niece, Alice Clark of Lincoln; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

The service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Maple Cemetery in Lincoln.

There will be no calling hours.

Contributions may be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice, Middlebury, 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.
