RUTH (NANA P.) PATTEE

ENOSBURG FALLS - Ruth (Nana P.) Pattee, age 88, died Thursday morning, Nov. 23, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born in Sheldon, Aug. 31, 1913, the daughter of the late Charles and Jessie (Casavant) LaMonda.

Ruth had been employed at sewing factories in Swanton, St. Albans and Newport and was then employed at IBM for 13 years retiring in 1978. She had been a resident of Enosburg most of her life and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.

She is survived by a son, Charles Pattee and his wife, Rachel of West Enosburg; three daughters, Patricia Carpenter and her husband, Charles of Montgomery, Marilyn Marshall of Enosburg, and Carolyn Stetson and her husband Lloyd of Enosburg.

She is also survived by a sister-in-law Thelma Pattee of Littleton, Mass.; 12 grandchildren and their spouses, Cathie and Steve Paradee, Michael and Linda Carpenter, Shari and Scott Joyal, Beverly and Tim Mayotte, Bobby and Cindy Barnes, Judy Babcock, William and Crystal Barnes, Darlene and James Hull, Duane and Molly Stetson, Dana and Jennifer Stetson, Thomas and Renee Pattee and Terri and Keith Deuso; 22 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth was predeceased by a brother, Wilfred LaMonda, a sister, Doris Loukes, and a granddaughter Kari Carpenter.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Ave. in Ensoburgh, Friday evening from 7 to 9.

MAURICE "PETE" MENARD

ROUSES POINT, N.Y. - Maurice "Pete" Menard, 71, of Rouses Point, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

Her was born July 14, 1930, in Sheldon, Vt., the son of Albert and Ida (Jutras) Menard. He was an avid sportsman and gardener.

He is predeceased by his parents and one son, Mark Menard.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara (West) Menard; seven sons and five daughters in law, Donald and Vanka Menard of Franklin, Vt., Robert and Sandy Menard of Coopersville, John and Susan Menard of Alburg, Vt., David and Maureen Menard of Cato, N.Y., Jimmy Menard of Coopersville, Bradley and Gretchen Menard of Corinth, Texas, and Peter Menard of Rouses Point; six daughters and sons in law, Betty and Nelson Laduc of Champlain, Donna and Thomas Gooley of Champlain, Debbie and Brian Hilliker of Swanton, Vt., Jean and Mark Lappacher of New York, Joan and Michael Lothian of Franklin, Vt., Judy and Steve Danyo of Franklin, Vt.; three brothers, Daniel Menard, Gerald Menard, Furman Menard; Marion Lussier, Hilda Demar, Hortense Vanslette, Ruth Brosseau, Lucille Kinnerson, and Anita Paradee. Pete is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Clark Funeral Home in Rouses Point. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. from St. Joseph Church in Coopersville.

MARILYN J. HALL

PHILLISPBURG, N.J./ ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Marilyn J. Hall, age 66, died Tuesday morning, Nov. 20, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, N.J. She was born in St. Albans, Aug. 31, 1925, daughter of the late Arnold and Irene (Thibault) Lewis. She was employed by the Union Hotel in Flemington.

Her survivors include her four children, Robert E. Hall, Jr., of Northampton, Pa., Robyn Storm of Easton, Pa., Les Hall of Mt. Bethel, Pa., Betsy Pogorzelski of Phillipsburg, Pa.; brothers and sisters Wanda Guyette of St. Albans, Barbara Soucy of Manchester, N.H., Jean Hayden of St. Albans, James Lewis of St. Albans, Joan Vecchio of Marshalls Creek, Pa., Jim Suozzo of Martins Creek, Pa.; 12 grandchildren one great-granddaughter; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Shirley Fregeau, Carol Thornton, and Dorothy Fregeau, and her brother Arnold Lewis, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:45 a.m. in St. Philip & St. James Roman Catholic Church. Friends may call at the Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Hackman St., in Phillipsburg, from 7 to 9 Friday. Interment will be in the St. Philip & St. James Cemetery.

BERNARD G. SHEPARD

ST. ALBANS - Mr. Bernard G. "Baldy" Shepard, age 78, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 21, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in St. Albans, Nov. 3, 1923, son of the late Carlton, Sr. and Mary (Flanagan) Shepard.

Bernard was a graduate of St. Mary's High School and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was in the 88th Infantry Division, "K" Company of the 349th Regiment in Africa and Italy. He was a sergeant and squad leader of his platoon of 11 men when they landed in Casablanca, Dec. 25, 1943. He served honorably and was discharged Nov. 4, 1945 from Grenier Field Separation Base in Grenier, N.H. He was decorated with the E.A.M.D. Theater Service Medal with two bronze stars, also with the W.W.II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.

He was a member of the American Legion, Green Mountain Post #1; Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert E. Glidden Post 758; and Disabled American Veterans.

He was a Terminal Train Master for the Central Vermont Railway, with over 44 years of service to the railroad. He was a former communicant of the Church of the Nativity during the 27 years his family lived in Swanton. they returned to St. Albans in 1999, where he was a communicant of St. Mary's Church.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and belonged to bowling leagues, but his favorite pastime was love of golf. He was a member of the Champlain Country Club for several years, and was an exceptional golfer.

He married Helen Callaghan, Jan. 7, 1946. Bernard was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Besides his wife, Helen of over 55 years, he is survived by his daughter, Carolyn, and her husband Roland Church of Swanton; his granddaughter Debra and her husband Brian McMahon; and three special great-grandchildren Shannon, Matthew and Hanna McMahon all of Highgate Springs; his sister Mabel and her husband Norman Lemnah of Maryland, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his son Stephen Michael Shepard and a brother Carlton Shepard, Jr.

Bernard's family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Paul Unger, his office staff, especially Donna Johnson, and all his personal caregivers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m., in St. Mary's Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Interment will be in the Shepard family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Church or the National Shrine of St. Jude, 205 West Monroe St., Chicago, Ill. 60606. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ESTHER W. NEWTON

ST. ALBANS/GEORGIA - Mrs. Esther Wheaton Newton, 82, went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001. She was born Sept. 6, 1919, in Oakland, Maine, the daughter of the late Reverend Clarence and Mabel (Wheldon) Wheaton. Her early childhood was spent in Maine. In 1929, her family moved to Montgomery, Vt. She attended Richford High School and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax, class of 1936. Esther attended the Burlington Business College and following graduation was employed by the Goss Company in St. Albans.

On Dec. 5, 1941, Esther married Stuart A. Newton in St. Albans. The couple lived with Stuart's parents until they purchased a farm in Georgia in 1944. They lived in both Georgia and St. Albans during their life together with their current residence being in St. Albans.

Esther had a great love for music and spent 23 years as the choir director and organist at the Georgia United Methodist Church. She also taught piano lessons for many years. Both Ester and Stuart enjoyed sharing their music in churches as well as in the community. Esther enjoyed music for her own interests, but she also saw music as a ministry and a way to share her faith. She loved to read and swim and enjoyed being a mother and homemaker.

She was a member of the Georgia Banner Grange, the Music Study Club of St. Albans, and the St. Albans Citizens Band. She was an active member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. Esther and Stuart enjoyed spending their winters in Palmetto, Fla., where they participated in many activities and churches.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 60 years, Stuart, of St. Albans, and three children including a daughter Dickey Stuckert of Palmetto, FL, a daughter Dot Bernat and her husband Joe of North Myrtle Beach SC; a son Reverend Samuel Newton and his wife Beverly of Lake Elmore, Vt., 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Sue Mossey in 1997, a grandson Steven Martinson in 1967, her two sisters Alma Burba in 1991, and Gladys "Mac" MacDonald in 1979.

Esther will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Throughout her long battle with cancer, her faith love, and the way God sustained her, were an inspiration to many. Her wise Godly counsel encouraged many of us in our faith. We are thankful that she is at rest in heaven with Jesus.

Calling hours will be Friday, Nov. 23, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home in St. Albans. A memorial service will be held at the Georgia United Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001. Interment will follow at the Georgia Plain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, or the memorial funds of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Church St., St. Albans or Georgia United Methodist Church, Ethan Allen Highway, St. Albans.

LILLIAN R. CHAMBERLIN

SWANTON/ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Lillian R. Chamberlin, 92, a lifetime area residents, passed away early Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Redstone Villa Nursing Home. She was born in Enosburg on Jan. 9, 1909, the daughter of the late Merton and Lillian (Pooler) McGowan. On May 11, 1925 she married Edward W. Chamberlin who predeceased her in November of 1953.

Lillian was a Licensed Practical Nurse employed for over 25 years in the maternity ward at the former Kerbs Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Medical Center), retiring in 1978. She was a member of Memorial Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and a former member of the King's Daughters in Swanton and St. Albans.

Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Reynolds of Swanton and Marion Walton of Huntsville, Alabama and Appletree Bay in South Hero; eight grandchildren, Cynthia and Jake Doner, Jo Ann Reynolds, Mark Reynolds, Carol Lee Matthews, Gary and Nicole Reynolds, David and Carla Walton, Jay and Kathy Walton and Randy and Julie Walton; 17 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons-in-law; Leonard Reynolds and Robert Walton, and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at noon in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, St. Albans. Interment will be in the family lot at Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lillian Chamberlin Memorial Fund, NMC Family Birth Center, c/o Donna Rath, P.O. Box 1370, St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Friends may call on Friday from 6-9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

GLADYS MAUDE CAPSEY-LAROCHE

HIGHGATE CENTER - Gladys Maude Capsey-Laroche of Highgate Center passed away, peacefully with her loving family at her side on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at her son's home, Percy Capsey on Lamkin Street in Highgate Center, Vt.

Gladys was born on Dec. 10, 1916, in Pigeon Hill, Que. She was the daughter of the late Ted and Jen Perrott. On Nov. 14, 1936, she married Douglas Capsey.

For many years, Gladys and her husband, Douglas, ran a dairy farm and a vegetable stand. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton, and also loved to play cards.

She is survived by her four sons and their wives, Percy and Susan Capsey of Highgate Center, Stanley and Margaret Capsey of Swanton, Gary and Dianna Capsey of Franklin, and Henry and Tina Capsey of Highgate Center.

She leaves 13 grandchildren, Mark and Karen Capsey of Highgate Center, Tina Lovely of North Hero, James and Georgiann Capsey of Baltimore, Md., Lisa and Scott Baker of Highgate, Tamie and Albert Laroche of Highgate, Stan and Christa Capsey of Swanton, Ann Capsey of Swanton, Marie and Mark Henry of St. Petersburg, Fla., Patty Capsey of Clearwater, Fla., Kenneth and Tiffany Capsey of Franklin, Doug and Laura Capsey of Highgate Springs, Cynthia Capsey of Buffalo, N.Y., David Capsey of Highgate Center, and George Cline, Jr., of Swanton.

She leaves 17 great-grandchildren, Travis and Trevor Leroux, Colin Capsey, Carissa Rushlow, Ashley Sylvester, Robert Lovely, Jr., Kyle, Kody and Hunter Baker, Christine and Lance Henry, Michael Capsey, Riley Tessier, Emily Capsey, Elizabeth Greenia, Heidi and Melissa Danforth.

She is survived by a brother, Peter Perrott of Cowensville, Que., and a sister, Edna Derby of Southampton, Ont. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. She leaves a special niece Alice LeGros of Montreal, Que., and a special pet, Bonnie.

She was predeceased by her husband, Douglas, in 1985, and brothers Clarence and Bob and her sisters Margaret, Edith, Ethel, Rose, Jenny and Lucy.

In July, 1988, she married George Laroche and was predeceased by him on Nov. 14, 2000.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at 11 a.m. from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vet. Interment will follow in Mystic Cemetery in Mystic, Que. Gifts in Gladys' memory may be made to Franklin County Home Health, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.
