Earle Cowing

SAXTONS RIVER - Earle Cowing, 79, of Bellows Falls, died Aug. 20, 2000, at Sarah's Garden at Sunny Knoll in Franklin, N.H., after a brief battle with kidney cancer.

He was born Dec. 10, 1921, in South Royalton, son of Raynold J. and Helen (Thayer) Cowing.

He graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1939.

Mr. Cowing married Theresa Joslyn Cowing.

Mr. Cowing worked in the family Riverside Dairy and family business of Maplecraft Manufacturing Co. in Westminster, retiring as shop manager from Cooperman Fife and Drum at Cowing's Mill in 1998.

He was a member of the Fall Mountain Grange, the Saxtons River Valley Pomona Grange and the Vermont State Grange for a total of 50 years.

His hobbies included candlepin bowler, horseshoes and skiing.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Cowing of Wentworth, N.H., and Dennis Cowing of Broken Arrow, Okla.; a brother, Irwin Cowing of Fairfield, Ohio; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nephews and a niece.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, who died in 1993.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the United Church in Bellows Falls by the Rev. Kaye Hult. Burial will follow in the Westminster Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Fenton and Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the National Alzheimer's Foundation Vermont Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, 05601.

Richard R. Seymour

PERU - Richard Robert Seymour, 74, died Aug. 21, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Sept. 1, 1925, in Glen Cove, N.Y., son of Ernest J. and Euphemia (Finlayson) Seymour.

He graduated from Glen Cove High School.

Mr. Seymour married Eileen Mach on March 3, 1951, in Glen Cove. He moved to Peru in 1967.

He worked for Bromley Mountain Ski Area for 32 years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a navigator on a B-17 stationed in England during World War II.

Mr. Seymour was a lifetime member of the Peru Volunteer Fire Department, where he was chief for several years. He was also a member of the Glen Cove Fire Department and was a captain of the Hook and Ladder Company.

He was a deacon for the Peru Congregational Church and the Windham Congregational Church and held the position of tax collector for Peru.

His hobbies included golfing and was a member of the Manchester Country Club.

Survivors include his wife of Peru; two daughters, Jeanne Hanson of Charlestown, N.H., and Debra Torabi of Lexington, Ky.; five grandsons; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Peru Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Peru Village Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Friday from noon to 12:45 p.m.

A reception will be held after the service at the Peru Town Center.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Springfield Humane Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams-Gendron Funeral Home in Cheater.

Gordon R. Cochran

BRATTLEBORO - Gordon R. Cochran, 40, died Aug. 17, 2000, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Feb. 28, 1960 in Lebanon, son of Robert H. and Mary (Mosher) Cochran.

He attended Black River High School in Ludlow.

Mr. Cochran worked at various jobs around southern Vermont, one being at the Daken Woolen Mill in Ludlow until he became disabled in 1994.

His hobbies included fishing.

Survivors include two daughters Christy and Colleen of Springfield; three brothers, Harold Cochran of Springfield and Thomas Cochran of Windsor; a sister, Peggy Willis of Sharon; several nieces and nephews; two great-nieces; an aunt; and an uncle.

A graveside service will be held today at 10 a.m. in the Hartland Village Cemetery in Hartland.

Contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, 03756.

Leonard G. Stewart

SPRINGFIELD - Leonard Guy Stewart, 91, died Aug. 22, 2000, at his home in North Springfield.

He was born Aug. 23, 1908, in Amsden, son of Guy and Ethel (Sumner) Stewart.

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1927.

Mr. Stewart married Dorothea (Wyman) Stewart on Oct. 24, 1936.

He worked for Jones and Lamson in Springfield before retiring from Fellows Gear Shaper in North Springfield.

He was a member of the Congregational Church in Springfield and sang in the choir for more than 40 years. He was also a past member of the Springfield Community Chorus, the Yankee Male Chorus and the Mendelssohn Club.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting, gardening and bowling.

Survivors include his wife of North Springfield; two daughters, Anne Stewart of North Springfield and Beth Cijka of Rutland; a son, James Stewart of North Springfield; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Pine Grove Cemetery in North Springfield. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church, 77 Main St., in Springfield.

A reception will follow immediately in the church vestry.

Contributions may be made to the Springfield Visiting Nurses, 366 River St., or the Congregational Church Memorial Fund for the church's music program.

Stephen E. Darling

WINDSOR - Stephen E. Darling, 83, died Aug.20, 2000, at the Dartmouth - Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born May 17, 1917, in St. Albans, son of Walter and Mary Ellen (Tibbetts) Darling.

Mr. Darling graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy.

He married Catherine Wilkinson, who was a member of Britain's Royal Air Force, on Sept. 5, 1945 in England.

Mr. Darling served in the U.S. Army during World War II in England and took part in the D - Day invasion of France.

Mr. Darling was a member of the Volunteer Fire Dept. where he was the oldest active volunteer fire fighter in the state of Vermont.

He enjoyed anything having to do with trains.

Survivors include his wife of Windsor; three sons, James W. Darling of West Lebanon, N.H., Roger W. Darling of Marlboro, Mass. and Jeffrey Darling of Woodstock; a sister, Rosaline Farmer of Blue Ridge Summit, Penn.; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Clyde Darling of Hingham, Mass.

There will be a private memorial service at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Fort 4 in Charlestown, N.H., 03603.

Elsie A. Sexton

LONDONDERRY - Elsie Ray Alexander Sexton, infant, died Aug. 20, 2000, shortly after birth at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

She is survived by her parents, Dave Sexton and Nicole Alexander of Londonderry; and her grandparents, George and Roseanne Sexton of Chester and Barbara Alexander of Londonderry.

Their will be a private graveside service in the Riverside Cemetery in Londonderry.

Memorial contributions may be made to Floodbrook School Athletic Department. Checks may be made out to FBAA, in care of Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, 05255.

Mary Moller

DORSET - Mary (Jane) Moller, 81, a seasonal resident of Dorset and the island of Saint Croix, died Aug. 21, 2000 in Rockville, Md.

She was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., daughter of Francis and Mary (Judge) Melan.

She attended Wilkes-Barre schools and graduated from the Mary Mount University in Tarry Town, Conn.

She married John V. Moller in 1942.

Survivors include a son, John Moller of Potomac, Md; and two grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in May.

A memorial service will take place at a later date in Maryland. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Dorset after a private committal service by the Rev. Julien LaFlamme, pastor of Saint Paul's Church.

Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, 05255.

Alger D. Beal rites

BENNINGTON - A service to celebrate the life of Alger D. Beal, 74, who died June 27, 2000, in Bennington, will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Old Bennington.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Logan R. Dickie Jr.

MANCHESTER - Logan R. Dickie Jr., 84, formerly of Newbury, died Aug. 22, 2000, at the Centers for Health and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

He was born in Reading, Mass., son of Logan and Marion (Benedict) Dickie.

He graduated from Reading High School and the University of New Hampshire.

He married Kathleen Robinson on September 1954. She died in 1984. Mr. Logan married Phyllis Benedict in January 1985 in Manchester.

Mr. Logan worked as a dairy farmer for 55 years.

His hobbies included building and woodworking.

Survivors in addition to his wife include six daughters, Valerie Longley of West Newbury, Melanie Bowen of Quechee, Bridget Bowen of Clarendon, Amanda Beaulieu of Newberry, Hannah Maly of Greatfalls, Mont., and Heather Johnston of Lakeworth, Fla.; a son, Richard Bowen of Quechee; two stepdaughters, Lynda Beattie Lemieux and Pamela Beattie Webb; three stepsons, Kevin Beattie, Ivan Beattie and Eric Beattie; a brother, Newton B. Dickie of Walworth, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and a nephew and niece.

The funeral will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Newbury. A graveside service will follow in the Oxbow Cemetery in Newbury by the Rev. Joseph Ranaldi.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a memorial service starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester. The Rev. John Mitchell, pastor of the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester will officiate.
