BYRON "RED" BLANCHARD

ST. ALBANS, Vt./BRUNSWICK, Maine - Byron "Red" Blanchard, 89, a resident of St. Albans, Vt. since 1956, died Nov. 20, 2001 in Brunswick, Maine. He was born in Plymouth, Vt., April 3, 1912, the son of Edward and Edna (Moore) Blanchard and was a cousin of Calvin Coolidge. Mr. Blanchard was a Civil Engineer with the Vermont Highway Department for 35 years.

He graduated from Vermont Academy and the University of Alabama in 1935. He served with the Navy Sea Bees during World War II in the Pacific and was recalled to active duty in 1951-53 at the Navy's David Taylor Model Basin in Maryland. He was discharged as a Lt. Commander. He returned to work as a Resident Engineer until Jan. 1, 1957, when he was appointed to the position of District Engineer in the St. Albans Highway District No. 8. He retired in 1973. He belonged to the Vermont Society of Engineers and was a member of the First Congregational Church in St. Albans.

Survivors include his wife Eleanor (Gates) Blanchard of St. Albans; a son, Edward Blanchard of Bath, Maine; a daughter, Sarah Bing, of Salisbury, Maryland, two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Marks Blanchard, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at the Congregational Church in St. Albans on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 10 a.m. There will be no visiting hours. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

L. MILTON BROW

ALBURG - Mr. L. Milton Brow, 83, a lifelong resident of this community died late Sunday evening, Nov. 18, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born in Alburg, July 15, 1918, the son of the late Herman and Jennie (Turner) Brow. He attended school in Alburg and in June of 1948 was married to the former Thelma Gardner who predeceased him in January of 1971. On Oct. 3, 1971 he married the former Frances (Reilly) King who survives him.

For more than 30 years Milton operated Gardner's Store on Main Street in Alburg Village. In earlier years he had been employed by the Rutland Railroad.

Milton faithfully served his country in WWII in the United States Army as a member of the Aviation Engineers, served in the Azores, Puerto Rico, and Okinawa, receiving several commendations, medals and ribbons. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Morrisville as well as the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 in Alburg.

He was a devoted member of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Parish and was a member of the Third Degree Knights of Columbus, Council 2684 of Alburg.

In addition to his wife, Frances, of Alburg he leaves his daughter, Marcia Ladue and her husband Robert of Westerville, Ohio and their children, Megan Ashley Ladue and Patrick Lawrence Ladue. Also surviving are two stepchildren, George E. King and his wife Louise of St. Albans and their children, Robert and John King and Sally K. Nadeau and her husband Andre of Essex Junction and their children Matthew and Troy Nadeau, and Andrea Manning as well as five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Two sisters, Dorothy Harnois and Hazel Gardner, predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Alburg Village. The pastor, Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery. Calling hours will be private. Gifts in Milton's memory may be made to Alburg Rescue, in care of Terry Tatro, Alburg, Vermont 05440.

JANE M. TORBERT

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla./EAST FAIRFIELD - Mrs. Jane Margaret Brooks Torbert, age 83, died Monday Oct. 15, 2001, in New Port Richey, after a brief illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 4, 1918, daughter of the late John A. and Mary Juliane (Cavanagh) Brooks. Mrs. Torbert attended St. Clements are West Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in New Port Richey, Fla., a long time communicant of St. Catherine of Sienna Church in Allentown, Pa.

She is survived by her five children, Martin J. Torbert Jr., and his wife Patricia of Little Silver, N.J., Jane and her husband Karl Zurn of Burlington, Michael J. Torbert of Allentown, Pa., Timothy T. Torbert of St. Petersburg, Fla., Gregory J. Torbert of Burlington; grandchildren Shawn Torbert, Michael Torbert, Kelly Torbert, J. Brooks Zurn, Mary Dove Zurn, and her husband Gerald Herrera, Bridget McMahon Zurn; her sister Rita Brooks and her husband Carl Bach; her sister-in-law Joan Brooks all of Ocean gate, N.J.; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents and he husband Martin J. Torbert, Sr.; a grandson, Martin J. Torbert III; brothers John Brooks and Bartholomew Brooks; sister, Marie Brooks Gaynor Crooks; and an infant son.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in St. Anthony's Church in East Fairfield. Father Peter Williams will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Torbert family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fairfield.

CLARICE S. SCOTT

ST. JOHNSBURY - Mrs. Clarice S. Scott, of St. Johnsbury, died Monday morning, Nov. 19, 2001. She had been cared for at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center for the past three weeks.

She is survived by her son, Bruce A. Scott and wife Mary Jo of St. Albans; her daughter, Jan Adamec and husband Richard of New Buffalo, Mich.; four grandchildren, Christopher K. Scott of St. Albans, Tonya S. Eastman of Litteton, N.H., Gregory A. Scott of St. Albans, Brian J. Adamec of New Buffalo, Mich.

Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Sayles Funeral Home. The Rev. John Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Her family suggests memorial contributions could be directed to Caledonia Home Health, P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, Vt. 05819. Arrangements by Sayles Funeral Home, 525 Summer St., St. Johnsbury.

PATRICIA ARKINSON

ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Patricia H. Arkinson, age 92, passed away peacefully to join her husband, Emmett, Monday evening, Nov, 12, 2001, in Redstone Villa Nursing Home. She was born in St. Albans Aug. 28, 1909, daughter of the late James and Bridget (Ryan) Harvey. In Sept. of 1945 she married Robert Emmett Arkinson. He died Sept. 6, 1982.

For several years Pat was employed in the office of the St. Albans Grain Company. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary's Church.

Her survivors include her son James and his wife Charlotte Arkinson of St. Albans; her granddaughter Heather Arkinson of Raleigh, S.C. Besides her husband R. Emmett Arkinson, she was predeceased by her parents, her sister Geraldine Castonguay and her brother-in-law Arnold Castonguay.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Redstone Villa, who gave Pat such wonderful and loving care over the last year and a half, especially the two weeks prior to her death. The comfort and compassion given to Pat and her family was a true blessing.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 9:30 to 10:30, prior to the funeral Mass, Friday, morning. Interment will be in the Arkinson/Castonguay family lot in Holy Cross cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

HAROLD PROSPER RICH

SHOW LOW, Ariz. - Harold Prosper Rich, age 82, died at Navapache Regional Medical Center on Nov. 14, 2001.

Mr. Rich was born in St. Albans. He attended Bellows Free Academy. He served in the National Guard and then went into the Army. He served during WWII in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Guadalcanal, New Gunea from June 12, 1940 until Aug. 23, 1945.

He married Helen Patten on Sept. 28, 1946 in Swanton. They lived in St. Albans until 1964. They moved to Burlington in 1970, and then to Lighthouse Point, Fla. until 1992 when they moved to Flagstaff. They eventually moved to Show Low in 2000.

He retired as a machine operator in the plastics industry in 1985. He enjoyed reading, sports, and horses.

He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Show Low; his four daughters Bonnie Lou Krouskroup of Ormond Beach, Fla., Carol Gilmore of Tequesta, Fla, Peggy Joan Rich of White River Junction, and Marlene Green of Show Low. He is survived by 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled under the direction of Fletcher's Mortuary of 401 N. 4th Ave., Show Low, Ariz., 85901.

BEATRICE A. YOUNG

BAKERSFIELD - Mrs. Beatrice Agnes (Lawyer) Young, age 80, died early Sunday Morning, Nov. 18, 2001, in VerDelle Village, E.C.F. after a stay of a couple of weeks. She was born n Bakersfield June 1, 1921, daughter of the late Gordon and Bertha (Wagner) Lawyer. She was married to Hubert H. "Mike" Young. Mr. Young died March 27, 1982.

Beatrice and her husband operated dairy farms in Bakersfield and St. Albans Town, for several years. Later she was employed in chamber services for the Howard Johnson Motel in Burlington. She was a communicant of St. George's Church and a member of the Bakersfield Historical Society.

She is survived by her brothers Henry Young and Donald and his wife Pauline Young of Bakersfield; sister-in-law Alma Wells of Swanton; brothers-in-law Oscar Young of Westford and Roger Baker of Bakersfield; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents and her husband "Mike, " she was predeceased by her sister Bernice Churchill, Lillian Baker, sister-in-law Althema Lawyer, and brother-in-law Aubrey Churchill.

Graveside funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Maple Grove Cemetery. Father Peter Williams, pastor of St. Patrick's Church in Fairfield, St. Anthony's Church in East Fairfield, and the former St. George's Church in Bakersfield, will officiate. There will be no public calling hours. Those planning an expression sympathy are asked to consider the Vermont Association for the Blind, 37 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ARON J. SMART

ST. ALBANS - Aron J. Smart, age 24, died as the result of an auto accident Thursday evening, Nov., 15, 2001, on the Kellogg Road, in St. Albans.

Aron was born in St. Albans, Sept. 18, 1977, son the Gene Gordon Smart and the late Shirley (Church) Smart. He was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy and had been a stock clerk and delivery man for Dowling's Inc. for the past seven years.

His survivors include his father, Gordon and his companion Marie Bushey of Georgia; his sister Tina-Marie Smart of St. Albans; his brother Joseph and his wife Jennifer Smart of Enosburg; his maternal grandmother Jennie Church Marlow of St. Albans; a nephew Cody Smart; aunts and uncles Herbert and Linda Church, Daniel and Gladys Smart, Paul Valliancourt, Theresa and Philip Roy, Mildred and Sylvio Plourde; great aunts Hazel Jones and Priscilla Belanger; many cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Shirley Church Smart, Nov. 30, 1996.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in the Smart family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Autism Society, in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
