Sister Mary Assumpta Clarino

Sister Mary Assumpta Clarino, 92, of the Sisters of Providence in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and formerly of Rutland, died Dec. 17, 2001, at the Mother House in Montreal.

She was the daughter of Roger and Maria (Gulloto) Clarino.

Survivors include her religious family; a sister, Mary Bove; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Salvatore, James, Edward and Charles; and three sisters, Rose, Lena and Catherine.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m.at the Mother House, followed by burial in the Repos St. Francois D’Assise Cemetery.

Friends may call at Thursday from 2 p.m. at the Mother House of the Sisters of Providence, 5655 Salaberry St., Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A prayer service will be held at 7:45 p.m.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Alfred Dallaire Funeral Home, (800) 263-3811.

Bernice M. Aher

FAIR HAVEN — Bernice Mildred Aher, 94, died Dec. 18, 2001, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Mildred C. Lancour Rites

The funeral Mass for Mildred C. Lancour, 75, of Rutland who died Dec. 16, 2001, was held Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Karen Burgess.

Bearers were Jim Traynor, Tony Hall, both of Rutland, Patrick Lancour of Colchester and Brian Hill of Grantham, N.H.

A prayer service was held Monday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Houle.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Rose V. Durfee Rites

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral Mass for Rose Vladyka Durfee, 82, who died Dec. 15, 2001, was celebrated Tuesday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Organist was Nancy Wetherby who accompanied the church choir.

Readers were Ann Marie Mahar, Laura Smith and Robert Durfee.

Bearers were grandsons, Timothy Alexander, John Alexander, Keith Alexander, Jeffrey Martin, Thomas Martin, Daniel Durfee and Christopher Durfee. Honorary bearers were granddaughters, Pamela Weaver, Karen Orlando, Kathy Lloyd, Lisa Croop, Jill Conine, Amy Zani, Ann Marie Mahar, Jessica LoPresto, Sarah Smith and Laura Smith.

In attendance were members of Court Isabella 173 Catholic Daughters of America.

A wake service was conducted Monday evening at the Durfee Funeral Home by the Rev. Tinney.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Frances J. Fanning

SHAFTSBURY — Frances Jeane Fanning, 82, died Dec. 17, 2001, at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center after a brief illness.

She was born Sept. 27, 1919, in Medford, Mass., the daughter of Harry and Flora (Abbott) Bonnell.

She received her education in Medford and graduated from Medford High School in 1939. At age 19 she won the Miss Twin Mountain beauty contest in Twin Mountain, N.H.

In earlier years Mrs. Fanning was employed as a waitress at Ken’s Steak House in Framingham, Mass., for 25 years, retiring in 1978. She later moved to Shaftsbury, where she operated a registered day-care center for several years, and most recently, she was employed at Paulins Variety store in Arlington.

She was a member of the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church, where she taught vacation Bible school, served as chairwoman of the Christmas bazaar and helped organize the annual chicken pie suppers. She was a sponsor of the Fresh Air program for children from New York City and a member of the Hill Country Cloggers.

In 1995 she was awarded a community service award by the local chapter of the National Organization for Women for her efforts in childcare and services for women.

She enjoyed crafts and quilting, especially babies’ quilts.

Survivors include four sons, Paul Monahan of Deland, Fla., Michael Monahan of Whitefield, N.H., Steve Monahan of New York City and Robert Fanning Jr. of Pownal; a daughter, Karen Ayers of West Rupert; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard Monahan; a great-grandson; her husbands, Anthony Monahan and Robert Fanning; six brothers, Floyd “Pat” Bonnell, Merlin Bonnell, Kenneth Bonnell, Duncan “Mack” Maclean, Everett Bonnell and Bertram Bonnell; and two sisters, Thelma Ruggles and Norma Thompson.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Shaftsbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Deborah Trolenberg, pastor, officiating.

Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the American Cancer Society, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Mary C. Morrissey

WOODSTOCK — Mary C. Morrissey, 69, died Dec. 17, 2001, at her home.

The memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 30, at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Chapel in Woodstock.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ava Gallery and Art Center Scholarship Fund, 11 Bank St., Lebanon, N.H., 03766.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Robert E. Peckham

NORTH BENNINGTON — Robert E. Peckham, 76, died Dec. 18, 2001, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Doris K. Kehoe

BENNINGTON — Doris K. Kehoe, 73, died Dec. 18, 2001, at her home after a brief illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Harold Fordham

CLAREMONT, N.H. — Harold Fordham, 70, died Dec. 14, 2001, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

He was born March 24, 1931, in Montpelier, Vt., the son of Orville and Alice (Legacy) Fordham.

He had resided in Claremont most of his life.

He retired as a truck driver for Johnson & Dix, and had previously worked for O.H. Lewis and Coy Paper Co.

Mr. Fordham was a former member of the Foresters of America, American Legion Post 29 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 808.

Survivors include a daughter, Delores “Tootsie” Storer of Claremont; a son, Harold McPhee of Standardville, Va.; an adopted son, Steven; a sister, Lorraine Abbiati of Barre, Vt.; and three grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Stringer Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Harold J. Mortimer officiating. Burial will be in Cavendish Village Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont.

Floryan A. Lohutko Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral Mass for Floryan A. Lohutko, 80, who died Dec. 15, 2001, was celebrated Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Springfield.

Organist was Rafal Nowak, who accompanied the Rejoice Choir, and cantor was Stan Smith.

Bearers were Gary Lohutko and Eddy Lohutko, both of Springfield, Kurt Lohutko and Matthew Lohutko of St. Louis.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Irma McCoy Rites

MANCHESTER CENTER — The funeral service for Irma McCoy, 93, who died Nov. 29, 2001, was held Tuesday at the Brewster Funeral Service with the Rev. Julian LaFlamme, pastor of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, officiating. Burial followed in Greenmount Cemetery in Whitehall, N.Y.

Personal reflections and memories were offered by Martha Stevenson, a close friend.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.

Josephine Casale Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Josephine Casale, who died Dec. 13, 2001, was held Monday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Vincent J. Coppola, CSC, associate pastor, as celebrant. Burial followed on Tuesday in St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, N.Y., with the Rev. Ralph Guarracino offering the committal prayers.

Organist was Randall Krum and soloist was Monica Murray.

Bearers were Lewis Betit, Pinto Ghosh, Richard Jones, Michael LaFountain and Sam Restino.

Honorary bearers were members of Court St. Andrew, Catholic Daughters of America, Barbara Hurley, Rita McCann, Geraldine Sausville, Mary Morrissey and Evelyn Pallo.

A prayer service preceded the funeral Mass at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Members of Court St. Andrew conducted a service Sunday afternoon at the funeral home and the Rev. Coppola offered a wake service Sunday evening. In attendance were several members of various line dancing groups where Mrs. Casale was active.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Viva Belle C. Nelson

GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Viva Belle C. Nelson, 95, of Western Hills Retirement Village in Cincinnati died Dec. 14, 2001.

She was born Aug. 15, 1906, in Granville, the daughter of Owen and Ida (Aldous) Cadwallader.

She graduated from Granville High School in 1924 and earned a teaching certificate from the Granville Training Class of 1925. She later completed a bachelor of science degree at Castleton (Vt.) State College.

Her first teaching assignment was in Country School District 10 and later in the Granville public schools. She retired in 1969. She and her husband later moved to Cincinnati to be near their daughter and family.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Maslyn of Cincinnati; three grandsons; and a granddaughter.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Margaret Gellner and Ruth Shannon; and a brother, Chandler Cadwallader.

The funeral service was held in Cincinnati. Burial will be in the Mettowee Cemetery in Granville at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville.

William W. Hildreth

NASSAU BAY, Texas — William Wesley “Bill” Hildreth, Ph.D., 83, died Dec. 14, 2001.

He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Shoreham, Vt., the son of William and Lois (Wright) Hildreth.

He received his bachelor of science degree in geology from the University of New Hampshire, a master of science degree in meteorology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a doctorate in oceanography from Texas A&M University.

Mr. Hildreth married Flora “Peggy” Bassett of New Orleans on June 24, 1950. She died in November 2001.

He worked most of his life in the aerospace industry and loved studying the forces of nature.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II, forecasting weather at Point Barrow, Alaska.

Mr. Hildreth was a member of the Knights of Columbus and City Council of Nassau Bay.

Survivors include two daughters, Eleanor “Nan” Hildreth of Houston and Elizabeth “Buff” Hildreth, DVM, of Richmond.

The memorial Mass will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Nassau Bay.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Parks Conservation Association, 1300 19th St. Northwest, Suite 300, Washington, D.C., 20036, Attn: Membership Department.
