ROBERT GEORGE YOUNG

MILTON/CANONSBURG, PA - Robert Young, 81, of Milton, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Nov. 12, 2001. He died at home with his beloved wife by his side.

Robert was born in Bridgeville, Pa. on Oct. 23, 1920, the son of the late John and Mary Kriegar Young.

He attended Cecil High School in Cecil, Pa., and served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. From 1953 until 1967 he was employed by Perrini Corp. of Farmingham, Mass. In 1960 he was commended for his drilling and blasting work at Cornell University's Research Library Building. He retired from Collier Stone in Carnegie, Pa. in 1985.

Bob was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener and he marched to a "different drummer." He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his wonderful stories. Especially the one where he blew Rt. 7 off the map, at Chimney Corners, during the construction of I-89 in 1963.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was a 4-H dad and spent countless days at horse shows and sheep shows with his family. For many years, he and his wife raised Registered Romney Sheep under the name of Plum Run Romneys.

In 1965 he married the former Sally Desranleau Lombard in Milton. In 1967, they moved to Canonsburg, Pa. there they resided on the family farm until 1995 when his illness prompted their move back to Vermont.

Bob leaves his wife Sally of 36 years of Milton; two sons, Alton Lombard of Fairfield, and Andre Lombard of Aliquippa, Pa; two daughter, Maria Gifford and her husband John of Milton, and Sonia Morgan and her husband Albert of Columbus, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Kari and Monica Morgan, Joel, Forreste, Victoria, Rachel, Michaela, and Oliver Lombard; a brother, Elmer Young and his wife Dolores of Canonsburg, Pa.

He was predeceased by his brothers William, Frank, and Arthur and his sisters, Minnie Maurer, Clara Higgens, and Annie Young.

He also leaves several nieces and nephews and two special sisters-in-law, Katherine Russell "his second best girl" and Jacqueline Kendrew, "his cookie lady".

The family would like to thank Dr. James Bergmann and Hospice for their wonderful care and support that made it possible for Bob to spend his last days at home.

There will be no visitation hours or funeral service, and burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Contributions in Bob's memory may be made to either Milton Rescue, P.O. Box 113, Milton, Vt. 05468, or to the Alzheimers Association, Vt. Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, Vt. 05601

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home, Milton.

IMELDA M. OVITT

WEST ENOSBURG - Imelda M. "Bridget" Ovitt, age 80, wife of Earl Ovitt, died Monday morning Nov. 12, 2001 at VerDelle Village ECF in St. Albans.

She was born June 2, 1921 in Falls River, Mass., daughter of the late Adelard and Blanche (Gagne) Metayer.

She lived in West Enosburg on the Ovitt Farm for the past 54 years. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Tyler Branch Grange of West Enosburg. She was a 4-H and Brownie Leader and along with her husband participated in the St. Albans Farmers Market. She enjoyed feeding and watching birds and most of all she loved her family.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years Earl Ovitt; three children and their spouses; Lynda and Mel Peck, Larry and Joanne Ovitt, and Earleen and Peter Bosley all of West Enosburg; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister and her husband, Theresa and Luther Stowe of Winooski; one brother and his wife, Raymond "Dutch" and Gloria Metayor of Lake Wales, Fla.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Rita Dalley and Lucianne Metayer, one brother, Normand "Frank" Metayer.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

SSG ROBERT ROGER JOHNSTON

SWANTON - SSG Robert Roger Johnston, (retired), 42, died unexpectedly late Saturday evening, Nov. 10, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born in St. Albans, Feb. 24, 1959, the son of Jerry and Edna (Mott) Johnston. He attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School.

SSG Johnston retired on June 30, 1997, following an 18-year career with the United States Regular Army. He had served overseas in Germany, Korea and Holland as well as at several military bases in the United States and was a veteran of Operation Desert Storm.

He will always be remembered for his love of truck driving, and at the time of his death was employed by Foster Inc.

SSG Johnston leaves a son, Robert "RJ" Johnston and a daughter, Melissa "Missa Ann" Johnston both of Highgate. He also leaves his mother, Edna Johnston of Swanton; his father Jerry Johnston and his companion Veronica of Highgate; three brothers, Kevin Johnston and his wife Diane of West Swanton; Steven Johnston and his wife Holly of West Swanton and Ronald and his wife, Shelley of Highgate. Also surviving are his aunts and uncles, David "Skookie" and Tina Mott, Robert and Ann Mott and George Mott all of Swanton, his former wife Connie Marlette of Minnesota, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his step dad, Joseph Loyer on June 7, 2000.

Funeral Services with Full Military Honors will be held Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at 1 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Donavee Copenhaver, pastor of the Missisquoi River Charge of the United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will take place later in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in SSG Johnston's memory may be made to Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488.

PHYLLIS GIRARD BISHOP

ST. ALBANS - Phyllis G. Bishop, 77, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 10, 2001, at Northwestern Medical Center following a lengthy illness. She was born in Fairfield, June 22, 1924, daughter of the late A. Wilfred and Marguerite (Curtis) Girard of Fairfield.

On Aug. 20, 1949, she married Norman Ashley Bishop, Sr., in Fairfield. Norman survives her.

Phyllis was a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church in St. Albans and St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Eden, Vt. She was employed for 15 years by Vermont Gas Systems, retiring in 1986. She graduated from Mt. St. Mary's.

In addition to her husband, Norman, she is survived by her son, Norman Ashley Bishop, Jr., of Naperville, Ill., and his wife, Eva, and their daughters, Alexis, Sheila and Julie Lynn and son Andrew; her son, Christopher D. Bishop of South Burlington and his wife, Janet and their children, Michael, JoAnna, William and Caitlyn; her daughter, Kathy Bishop Lindsay of Atlanta and her husband, Jack.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Mary A. Bishop, Dec. 13, 2000. She also leaves a son-in-law, William Scott Dazey of Centennial, Colo. and his and Mary's daughter, Lauren. She is also survived by her brother, Sedrick Abell of Franklin; her sister and husband, Elizabeth "Becky" and Charles Reed of Swanton; brothers, James Girard and his friend, Bea Cheney of St. Albans, and Lawrence Girard and his wife, Carol of Essex Jct.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, A. Wilfred Girard, Jr., of San Francisco.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the family lot in Berlin Corners Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Eden, Vt. 05652. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

FRANCIS "JACK" DODD

BERKSHIRE - Francis "Jack" Dodd, age 80, died Sunday morning Nov. 11, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born Feb. 25, 1921 in Mystic, P.Q. Canada, the son of the late Cyril Arthur and Ethel Ruth (McMillan) Dodd.

Jack was a resident of Berkshire for the past 51 years. When Jack was 25 he had a farm accident which resulted in losing his right arm and fingers on his left hand. While being treated in the hospital he met his future wife Velma Ploof, they were married June 27, 1950. Following his accident he was employed at McGovern's Grain Store in East Fairfield, H.B. Jones Store in Enosburg Falls. While working in Enosburg, he bought his in-laws farm and continued to operate it until retiring in 1995. Jack never let his disability slow him down, he was able to fix and collect antique tractors and raise horses. His love of horses came from his father who worked with horses in England. He was always willing to help his neighbors and always had a place for area youth to work and live. Jack became a U.S. Citizen on Nov. 20, 1956, at the age of 35.

Jack will be remembered by all as a kind hearted, honest and caring gentleman. He is survived by two brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Avis Dodd of Fairfield, and Russell and Eleanor Dodd of Sheldon; one sister and her husband, Irene and Burt Strong of Craftsbury; several nieces and nephews; his special friend, Paula Lesmerises of Berkshire and her son, Michael Lesmerises of Liverpool, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Velma Dodd, and a brother, Eric Dodd.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will follow in the Missisquoi Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

LEO S. JETTIE, JR.

FAIRFIELD - Leo S. Jettie, Jr., age 60, husband of Barbara A. (Gadd) Jettie, died Friday evening, Nov. 9, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

He was born Jan. 17, 1941 in St. Albans, the son of the late Leo S. Jettie and Evelyn (DeCelle) Jettie.

Leo lived in Conn. with his first wife Helen (Raymond) Jettie who predeceased him in 1968. While in Connecticut, he was employed at Atlantic Saw Mfg. in addition to having three other side jobs. Prior to returning to Fairfield, he was remarried to Barbara. He then was employed at A.C. Vaillancourt in West Enosburg. While working full time he worked nights and weekends building his own home.

He then worked for A. Bonneau Machinery until he became disabled in 1986. In 1979, he moved back to the family farm where he enjoyed his grandchildren, horses, cows, welder, riding his four-wheeler, and spending many hours visiting with his family and friends. Leo loved to create and build things from his imagination using scrap and also built his own barn.

Beside his wife of 32 years, he is survived by four children, Pam Jettie of Fairfield, David and Karen Westberg of Victor, MT., Randy Jettie of St. Albans, and his very special friend, Karenna McLean, and Jim and Angela Jettie of Fairfield; four grandchildren, Hannah and Tina Westberg of Victor, MT., George Lafountain and Jaime Jettie both of Fairfield; a special niece, Kelly O'Brien of Fairfield; three brothers, Edeas Jettie of Fairfield, Fred Jettie of Sheldon, and Raymond Jettie of Swanton; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his first wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn "Stella" O'Brien.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Oren Lane officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheldon Village Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

FLOYD E. HANDY

ST. ALBANS - Floyd E. Handy, age 75, died Thursday evening, Nov. 8, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care, with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born in Winooski, Sept. 25, 1926, son of the late Joseph and Jennie (Hendy) Handy. Floyd was a first generation American of Lebanese descent. He attended Cathedral High School and St. Michael's College and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.

An avid flyer, he held a pilot's license before a driver's license.

He began his automotive career in 1953, when he and his brother, Lawrence, established a John Deere and International Harvester dealership in St. Albans, in addition to the pursuit of other business endeavors.

Involved in many civic and community affairs, Floyd served as a director of the Peoples Trust Company, former chairman of the Kerbs Memorial Hospital Founders Board, past president of the Swanton Chamber of Commerce, member of the Franklin County Flyers Association and member of the Franklin County Human Relations Board.

In addition, Floyd was instrumental in the creation of the Franklin-Grand Isle Regional Planning and Development Corp., and he played a key role in the creation of the Franklin County Airport.

In political and education affairs, Floyd served as the mayor of St. Albans City, a State of Vermont Tax Appraiser, chairman of the Franklin County Democratic Committee, Vermont State Aeronautics Board member, chairman of the Swanton School Board, member of Northwest District School Board, and two-term member of the Vermont State House of Representatives from St. Albans City.

Although Floyd greatly enjoyed serving his community in various capacities, his time spent as mayor of St. Albans was his greatest pride.

His survivors include his special companion, Beverly Connors; his three children Karen and her husband Daniel Luneau, Jacalynn and her husband Michael Blouin, Daniel Handy and his financée Lisa Cadieux; seven grandchildren, Joseph Luneau, Peter Luneau, Adam Luneau, Nicholas Handy, Kiley Blouin, Laurie Blouin and Jill Blouin; his brother, Lawrence and his wife Lorraine Handy; several nieces and nephews; Beverly's children, Susan and her husband John Burroughs, Steven and his wife Gail Connors, Nancy and her husband Mark Leuty; and his former wife, Claire Handy.

Besides his parents, Joseph and Jennie Handy, he was predeceased by his son, Stephen Handy, his sister Cecile, brothers Raymond and Elias and brother-in-law George Handy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Interment will be in the Handy family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery in Swanton. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials to the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., South Burlington, Vt., 05403. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
