Helen F. Willard Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The memorial service for Helen F. Willard, 89, who died Dec. 30, 2001, was held Friday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield with the Rev. William Nelson, pastor of the First Congregational Church in Springfield, officiating. Burial followed in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Maggie Morgan-Wright

BRISTOL — Maggie Morgan-Wright, 71, died Jan. 2, 2002, from complications related to congestive heart failure and sarcoidosis.

She was born Sept. 4, 1930, in Frankville, Ala., the daughter of Amos and Sadie (Elliott) Bumpers.

She received her education at Alabama State University, studied at Pepperdine University and received her master’s degree from the University of San Francisco. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and active in Zeta Phi Beta Maggies.

She was an educator in communities in the Compton Unified school district and Chicago for more than 30 years. She owned two nursery schools, worked with the foster children program and fostered children herself.

Her work with the Middlebury College PALANA Center founded several programs, including the now established PALANA Kids Program, which brought students at the college into contact with children in the community.

She was the proprietor of Morgan’s restaurant and the Wright One Boutique.

She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Carson, Calif., and the Assembly of God Christian Center in Vergennes.

Survivors include a brother, Mac Bumpers; two daughters, Shirley Babbitt and Benita Gill; five grandchildren; and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Morgan in 1977.

The funeral service will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Assembly of God Christian Center in Vergennes, and a memorial at Mead Chapel in Middlebury College at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

Friends may call Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.

Contributions may be made to the Assembly of God Christian Center, 1759 Route 7, Vergennes, 05491.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.

Jerald W. Kehoe

Jerald William Kehoe, 82, of Rutland died Jan. 4, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 19, 1919, in Rutland, the son of James and Grace (Bowen) Kehoe Sr.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1938.

Mr. Kehoe married Stephanie Bruce on July 17, 1943, in West Rutland.

He was employed at the First National Store as a meat cutter for 20 years. Later, he and his wife owned and operated Kehoe’s Market in Rutland for 14 years.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648 in Rutland.

Survivors include his wife of Rutland; two daughters, Cheryl Casey of Needham, Mass., and Patricia Barbash of East Wallingford; three sons, Michael Kehoe of Lancaster, Calif., Thomas Kehoe of Valrico, Fla., and Terrence Kehoe of Lafayette, Colo.; two sisters, Susie Cheney and Charlotte LeBlanc, both of Rutland; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five brothers, Ralph Kehoe, Donald Kehoe, Edward Kehoe, James Kehoe and Robert Kehoe.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tossing Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702, or Interage Adult Day Care Program, 6 Court St., Rutland, 05701.

Frederick E. Bitting

FAIR HAVEN — Frederick Edmund Bitting, age 91, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 3, 2002, at Misty Heather Morn Community Care Center in Hydeville.

Mr. Bitting was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on January 30, 1910. He was the son of Ralph and Lelia Mae (Stiteler) Bitting. He received his early education in Philadelphia and New Haven, Conn., schools and was graduated from Cheltenham High School in Elkins Park, Pa., class of 1929. He later graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelor of naval science degree in August 1949. He had served as a private first class in the 103rd Calvary of the Pennsylvania National Guard from July 1928 until July 1929. He enlisted in the United States Navy in August 1929 and served for 33 years, retiring in November 1962 from the Pentagon with the rank of commander. Among his numerous decorations is the Bronze Star Medal, awarded while serving as captain of the U.S.S. Red Start, for his leadership efforts during the rescue of Navy personnel from the U.S.S. Minivet, which was sunk while in Japanese waters. Following his retirement from the Navy, he was employed by Howard University in Washington, D.C., as a plant engineer in charge of operations and maintenance. He retired from the university in February 1978. He and his wife retired to Fair Haven in September 1979. He was a member of the Fair Haven United Methodist Church, the Fair Haven Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the Vermont Chapter of Naval Retired Officer’s Association. He had served on the board of directors of Common Cause, Fair Haven Senior Citizens, Fair Haven Regional Development Corporation and Rutland West Neighborhood of Housing Services. He had served the town of Fair Haven as town auditor and as a member of the Town Board of Adjustment.

Surviving is his wife, Dortha M. (Perry) Bitting of Fair Haven, whom he married in Boston on Oct. 21, 1941; one son, Frederick E. Bitting Jr. of Law Union, N.M.; three daughters, Sharon Lee Pickard of Gainesville, Fla., Sandra L. Wilson of Claremont, N.H., and Stephanie L. Bill of Philomont, Va.; and a brother, R. Donald Bitting and his wife, Ida, of Lansdale, Pa. A grandson, Benjamin N. Bitting; and three granddaughters, Cheno Wilson, Briana, Bill and Baby Bitting also survive, as well as a great-granddaughter, Hannah Marie Pecello. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A sister, Mercedes Bitting, predeceased him.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven. The Rev. Ashley Meade will officiate. Entombment will follow the service at St. Mary’s Cemetery receiving vault. A graveside committal service and burial with full military honors will take place at a later date in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Friends may call at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven on Friday, Jan. 11, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to the Fair Haven Concern, Washington Street, Fair Haven, Vt., 05733, or the Fair Haven United Methodist Church or to a charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Elma K. Syria

MOUNT HOLLY — Elma K. Syria, 89, died January 5, 2002, at her home after a long illness. She had numerous health problems but had a lot of “si su” to the end.

Elma was born in Andover, Vt., on April 8, 1912, to David and Alina (Untinen) Kangas. Elma was a 1931 Chester High School graduate. This June, her graduating class was the oldest to take place in the Alumni Parade in Chester. Elma and her classmates rode in an antique car and carried the checkered flag.

Elma and Wayne were married on the 4th of July “so we could always have the day off to go on a honeymoon.” They were married 56 years before Wayne passed away.

Although Elma only worked outside of the home a very short period of time, she took care of her in-laws, parents and was a very hard worker. She loved picking wild blueberries that grew on her property, canning or freezing them and giving many away. Her cookie jars were always full of homemade cookies and she welcomed drop in company anytime.

Elma is survived by her daughter, Elena S. Tobin of Fair Haven; her son, Gene W. Syria of Mount Holly and his wife, Lynn; three grandchildren, Elisa Tobin Kearney of Rutland, Laura Syria of New Hampshire, Jake Syria of Mount Holly; and her great-grandchild, Ean Kearney of Rutland. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, a neighbor and close friend, Betty Merlin, and other close friends.

Elma was predeceased by her husband, Wayne on January 31, 1990; her sister, Elina K. Whittendale; brothers, A. Walter Kangas, Eugene “Pat” Kangas; and nieces, Eileen Whittendale and Eleanor Kangas Barber.

There will be no calling hours. There will be a graveside service in the spring.

In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Holly Boy Scout Troop 17, in care of John Perry Jr., P.O. Box 133, Belmont, Vt., 05730, or to the Finnish Society of which Elma was a member. Finnish Society, in care of Bertha Kopenen, 1184 Route 100 North, Ludlow, Vt., 05149.

Mary C. Markvart

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — Mary C. Markvart, 90, died Dec. 31, 2001, at Halifax Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 12, 1911, in Poultney, Vt., the daughter of Dr. O. Flint and Julia (Porter) Clough.

Ms. Markvart went to Swarthmore College and the University of Vermont for her undergraduate studies. She received her master’s degree in social work from St. Louis University, where she also participated in a doctoral study in human relations. She also studied at the New York School of Social Work and the universities of Vienna, Berlin and Freiburg.

Ms. Markvart taught at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio as well as St. Louis University in St. Louis, and also guest-lectured at the Far Eastern University in Manila and the University of Malaya in present day Malaysia. She did clinical social work, teaching and consultation at Robert Koch Hospital in Koch, Mo., USA and USAF hospitals and the American Red Cross headquarters in Charlottesville, Va., the Jewish Family Service Agency in St. Louis and the Suffolk County Department of Public Welfare in Long Island, N.Y. She also worked at the Halifax Hospital Medical Center where the Volusia Unit of the National Association of Social Workers awarded her the 1985 Social Worker of the Year.

She was a member of the Phi Beta Phi Alumni Association.

She was a world traveler and interested in her family’s genealogy.

Survivors include a niece and nephew; six great-nieces and great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces.

The graveside service will take place in Poultney at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Louis University School of Social Work.

Stanley J. Luncz Rites

The funeral Mass for Stanley J. Luncz Sr., 86, of Rutland, who died Jan. 4, 2002, was held Monday at Christ the King Church with the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison of Christ the King Church and Monsignor Frank S. Warzocha, pastor of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland, officiating. A private burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Organist was Alan Walker and vocalist was Olivia Gawet.

Bearers were Robert Weinreber, David Maciejewski, Henry Maciejewski, Henry Nieber, Harold Burgess and Thomas Lacz.

A Christian prayer service was held Sunday at the Aldous Funeral Home by the Rev. Mattison.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Church, 66 S. Main St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Joshua M. Christie Rites

The funeral Mass for Joshua Mark Christie, 25, who died Jan. 1, 2002, was held Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The Rev. James J. McShane, pastor, and the Rev. Richard Tinney, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven, officiated.

Organist was Richard Brown and vocalists were Lori Routhier and Ed Murphy. Bagpiper was Bruce Lee.

Readers were Sarah Christie, his sister, Tom Boyce, an uncle, and Korey and Meghan Beach, cousins.

Reflections were shared by aunts, Shauna Corley and Sheila Fraser and uncle Bob Adams and Peter Quinlan.

A Christian prayer service was held Sunday at the Aldous Funeral Home by the Rev. McShane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Joshua M. Christie Scholarship Fund, in care of Nicki Carmolli at Salomon Smith Barney, P.O. Box 40, Rutland, 05702.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Charles A. Reardon Rites

The funeral Mass for Charles A. Reardon, 74, of Rutland, who died Jan. 4, 2002, was held Monday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiating. A private burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Karen Burgess.

Readers were Kathleen Bove and Erica Bove.

Bearers were Tom Navin, Rick Fielder, Jim Reardon and Tim Reardon, all of Rutland, Mark Reardon of Clarendon Springs and Dr. Ernest Bove of Rutland Town.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Russell L. Strong Rites

BENSON — The funeral service for Russell Ladd Strong, 86, who died Jan. 4, 2002, was held Monday at the Durfee Funeral Home with the Rev. Sharon Ladd officiating. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fair Haven.

Bearers were grandsons, Steve Strode, Brian Strong, Kurt Strong, Rusty Strong, Isaac Strong, John Strong and William Strong.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Frederick W. Richardson

SPRINGFIELD — Frederick W. Richardson, 77, died suddenly Jan. 7, 2002, at Springfield Hospital.

He was born June 8, 1924, in Springfield, the son of Clarence and Marion (Smith) Richardson.

He attended schools in Springfield and later graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Richardson worked for Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. for 45 years, instituting the first computers and working as a computer programmer, retiring in 1986.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during World War II.

He wrote and published two books on the history of Springfield, and was past president and current treasurer of the Springfield Arts and Historical Society. He was a member of the First Congregational Church.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Beverly (Beyer) Richardson; three daughters, Carol of Hinsdale, N.H., Sherry of Springfield and Nancy Hamilton of Brownsville; and a grandson.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Springfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church or the Springfield Arts and Historical Society.
