Charles E. Paige

LUDLOW — Charles E. Paige, 71, died Jan. 6, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington.

He was born Sept. 16, 1930, in Claremont, N.H., the son of George and Gladys (Carter) Paige.

He graduated from Black River High School in Ludlow in 1948. He attended the University of Vermont for three years before entering the U.S. Navy, serving in England during World War II. After his discharge, he returned home and completed his fourth year at UVM, earning a teaching degree.

Mr. Paige was a teacher at Black River High School for a time and then moved to Milwaukee, Wis., where continued to teach for a while. He then worked for Hanson Glove Factory in Milwaukee, retiring after 25 years of service.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include a brother, John Paige of Ludlow; two sisters, Gladys Strong of Ludlow and Muriel Porter of Colchester; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by five sisters, Rachel Phelan, Amelia Hoskings, Phyllis Horan, Elaine Keezer and Pauline Pullinen.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow. Burial will take place at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Fletcher Memorial Library, Capital Improvement Fund, in care of Milton Moore, Factory Point Bank, P.O. Box 30, Ludlow, 05149.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Ludlow.

Shirley L. Sheehan

SPRINGFIELD — Shirley Louise Sheehan, 69, died Sunday evening, January 6, 2002, at her home on Southridge Street. She was born February 25, 1932, in Springfield, the daughter of Harold and Lora (Pope) Barrows of Perkinsville.

She graduated from Springfield High School in the class of 1951, and on April 9, 1954, she married Glendon “Ginny” Sheehan at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield. She spent her years as a housewife and mother, working a Bryant Grinder, Brookwood, and for many years at the Family Center Boutique on Main Street. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church since 1954. She also belonged to the Court of St. Anne Catholic Daughters, Women of the Moose and the Springfield Bowling Association for many years.

She is survived by five children, a daughter, Kathleen (Kathi) Stern and her husband, Neil of Springfield and their children, Suzanne of Astoria, N.Y., Amanda of Raleigh, N.C. and Andrew of Springfield; a son, Keith Sheehan of Springfield and his daughter, Kelly of Providence, R.I.; a daughter, Karen Sheehan of Lebanon, N.H.; a daughter, Karleen Cass and her husband, Michael and their children, Bethany and Justin, all of Springfield; a son, Kevin Sheehan and his wife, Heather and their children, Nathaniel and Alyson, all of Milton, Vt.; three brothers, Warren “Skip” Barrows of Bushnell, Fla., Wendell “Boob” Barrows of North Springfield and Harold “Junior” Barrows Jr. of Perkinsville; two sisters, Bessie Childs of Walden, N.Y., and Jacqueline Schoonmaker of Newburgh, N.Y.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ginny, in 1990; her grandson, John Sheehan, in 1994; and by sisters, Doris Wood and Rachel Childs.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Raymond Fournier, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church of Chester, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Visiting hours will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ostomy Support Group at Springfield Hospital, 25 Ridgewood Road, Springfield, Vt., 05156. The family is grateful for their wonderful support over the last 10 years.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Elizabeth L. Saunders

SPRINGFIELD — Elizabeth L. Saunders, 65, died Jan. 6, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Center in Burlington after a brief illness.

She was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Salem, Mass., the daughter of Albert and Bessie (Ball) Dube.

She attended schools in Beverly, Mass., and later moved to Springfield.

She has been employed by the Springfield school system working in the cafeteria of the high school for many years and most recently at Union Street School.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Court of St. Anne Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Emblem Club at the Bellows Falls Elks Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Lee Trefry of Manchester, N.H., Deanna Trefry of Springfield and Lynne Holman of San Diego, Calif.; four sons, Michael Trefry of Barnstead, N.H., Marc Trefry and Daren Trefry, both of Manchester, N.H., and Glenn Trefry of Springfield; four grandchildren; and three sisters, Sylvia, Ruth Ann and Jeanne.

She was predeceased by her former husband, Gerald Trefry, in 1972.

The graveside committal service will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to Union Street School, Union Street, Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Robert G. Morrissey

SHAFTSBURY — Robert Glynn Morrissey, 57, died Jan. 7, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

He was born July 25, 1944, in Bennington, the son of Glynn and Hazel (Hathaway) Morrissey.

He received his education in the Bennington schools and graduated from Bennington High School in 1962.

Mr. Morrissey married Christine Cross on Sept. 19, 1970, in Bennington.

He had been employed by the Vermont State Highway Department and later by the town of Bennington Highway Department for several years prior to his retirement due to ill health.

He had been a member of the Bennington Rural Fire Department for 40 years, serving as the department chief from 1979 to 1982, and had served as department president and member of the Prudential Committee for the rural fire district. After his illness, Mr. Morrissey continued to serve the department as dispatcher until his death. He had also been deputy coordinator of the Bennington County Mutual Aid System.

Mr. Morrissey had also been a coach, umpire and groundskeeper for the Bennington Little League. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowplowing.

Survivors include his wife of Shaftsbury; a daughter, Tammy Audette of Burlington; two sons, John Morrissey and Ryan Morrissey, both of Bennington; four grandchildren; a brother, James Morrissey of Bennington; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Penny Rich Smith, pastor of the North Bennington Congregational Church, officiating. Burial will take place in White Chapel Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Bennington Rural Fire Department, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

All members of the Bennington Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home Wednesday at 7 p.m. to pay their respects to the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Mark R. Barry

WHITINSVILLE, Mass. — Mark R. Barry, 20, of Bennington, Vt., died Jan. 7, 2002, at his home.

He was born Sept. 5, 1981, in Milford, the son of Mark Barry of Whitinsville and Debra (Albin) Shea of Manchester Center, Vt.

He had attended Uxbridge High School and was currently working towards his high school equivalency diploma in Bennington.

Mr. Barry was employed as a preparation cook at the former Andimos Restaurant in Uxbridge for a year prior to moving to Bennington last year.

Survivors include his parents; a brother, Clint Rossi of East Dorset, Vt.; two sisters, Tiffany Plaggmier and Marissa Shea, both of Manchester Center, Vt.; maternal grandparents, Donald and Amy (Lapham) Albin of Manchester Center, Vt.; paternal grandparents, Raymond and Lorraine (Kaczowka) Barry of Uxbridge; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Mr. Barry was an avid skateboarder and artist.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the Buma Funeral Home in Whitinsville, followed by a Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Good Shepherd Church in Linwood. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Uxbridge.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Buma Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Boarders and Supporters of the Auburn Skatepark, 44 Richard St., Auburn, Mass., 01501.

Mildred E. Tefft

CHESTER — The memorial service for Mildred E. Tefft, 96, who died Dec. 12, 2001, will be held at the First Congregational Church in Springfield at a later date.

She was survived by a sister, Margaret E. Warner Landon of Londonderry.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Robert J. Buckley Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Robert J. Buckley, who died Jan. 1, 2002, was held Saturday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, CSC, associate pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray.

Scriptural readings were offered by Clare Yukevich, a daughter, and Mark Buckley, a son. The responsorial psalm was offered by John Buckley, a son.

The Eulogy was given by Mr. Buckley’s son, Paul.

Full military honors were provided. Taps were sounded by Mr. Buckley’s granddaughter, Polly Yukevich. The flag was presented to Mr. Buckley’s wife, Polly.

Bearers were sons, Peter, John, Brian, Mark Chris and Paul Buckley.

A reception was held at the Mount Anthony Country Club following the service.

Arrangement were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.

Ella R. Kennedy Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Ella R. Kennedy, who died Jan. 1, 2002, was held Monday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Poems were read by Christie Garlan, a granddaughter, and Danielle Manglass, a great-granddaughter.

Bearers were Alex Manglass, Nicholas Garlan, Jeff Morin and Leonard Morin.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Dean T. Mertrude Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Dean Thomas Mertrude, who died Jan. 2, 2002, was held Monday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Robert W. Lozinski, CSC, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Organist was Randall Krum and soloist was Monica Murray. Guitarist was Thomas Brown.

Scriptural readings were offered by William Dailey III and Alexander Mahar.

The eulogies were given by Duncan Turner and William Dailey III.

The American Legion Post 13 provided military honors. Joseph Krawczyk and Donald Tetreault presented the flag to Mr. Mertrude’s former wife, Diana Mertrude. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.

Bearers were Duncan Turner, Robert Barnhardt, Brian Lent, Dennis Galusha, Harold Stanley and Thomas Ryan.

The wake service was offered Sunday by the Rev. Lozinski. Members of the Bennington Elks Lodge 567 and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1861 also conducted their services at the funeral home. Employees and office personnel of William E. Dailey Inc. in Shaftsbury attended the calling hours and funeral Mass.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Anita St. Peter Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Anita St. Peter, who died Jan. 3, 2002, was held Monday at All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, chaplain, officiating. Burial followed in White Chapel Cemetery.

Organist was Louise Gauthier and soloist was Monica Murray.

Scriptural readings were offered by a nephew, Matthew St. Peter.

Bearers were Dennis Bisson, Louis Bisson , Roy Beardsley, Ted Church, Gary Church and Nathan Church.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
