Chewn Jotikasthira

SHAFTSBURY — Chewn Jotikasthira, 83, a resident of Eleanor’s Way, died Jan. 10, 2002, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation.

He was born March 29, 1918, in London, England, the son of Chewn and Lilian (Palmer) Jotikasthira.

He was educated in England.

He worked in customs and excise in the War Department from 1946 to 1953. He then was employed by Caltex Oil as a district accountant and public relations officer, and later by the United Presbyterian Church as a budget accountant and Central Intelligence Agency - Overseas. Mr. Jotikasthira had also worked in Bangkok as a special correspondent for World-Wide Information Services Inc. After 1959, he did market research for the Newspaper Enterprise Association (The World Almanac) in the United States.

While residing in Shaftsbury, Mr. Jotikasthira had served as chief of security at Union Carbide in Bennington. He also served as emergency management director and was on the Zoning Board.

He was a member of the British War Veterans of America Inc., and in association with the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Jotikasthira served in the British Regular Army, where he attained the rank of warrant officer. He participated in campaigns in France, Italy, North Africa, Sicily and the North and South Atlantic as well as many other tours.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia (Hill) Jotikasthira of Shaftsbury; a daughter, Ann Novicki of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; a great-niece; and many relatives in Bangkok, including two brothers.

The graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery with the Rev. John Foster, chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Anna M. Lampman

POWNAL — Anna Marie Lampman, 70, died Jan. 10, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

She was born Jan. 21, 1931, in North Adams, Mass., the daughter of Harmon and Mary (Malcolm) O’Dell.

She received her education in local schools and graduated from high school in 1949.

She married Walter Lampman Jr. on June 9, 1952, in Pownal. He died in 1986.

Mrs. Lampman was an avid gardener who enjoyed making her property a showplace with flowers.

Survivors include four sons, Scott Lampman, Alan Lampman and Jan Lampman, all of Pownal, and Dale Lampman of Shaftsbury; a sister, Joan Pettibone of Pownal; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Pownal Community Church with the Rev. Eugene Kemp and the Rev. Isabelle King officiating. Interment will follow in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pownal Community Church, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Michael K. Hawks

BENNINGTON — Michael K. Hawks, 87, wife of the late Breard Hawks, died Jan. 10, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Carl M. Butterfield

SPRINGFIELD — Carl M. Butterfield, 48, died Jan. 9, 2002, at his home.

He was born April 6, 1953, in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, the son of Alan and Natalie (Slagter) Butterfield.

He grew up in Jamaica, Haiti and Vermont, and graduated from Springfield High School. Later, he received an undergraduate degree from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y., and the University of Vermont. He received a medical doctor degree at the University of Haiti, and a doctorate in health psychology counseling at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Mr. Butterfield was employed as a mental health counselor and a clinical surgical assistant in Gainesville. He then was employed as a teacher at Riverside Junior High School in Springfield and Bellows Falls Union High School.

Survivors include his parents of Springfield; a daughter, Alexandra Butterfield, and her mother, Patricia Butterfield, both of Gainesville; his fiancée, Mary McGeehee of Gainesville; a sister, Loretta Miner; a brother, John Butterfield of Williston; and a niece and nephew.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. Burial will take place in Grout Cemetery in Perkinsville at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Springfield Humane Society, P.O. Box 398, Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Shirley L. Sheehan Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral Mass for Shirley L. Sheehan, 69, who died Jan. 6, 2002, was celebrated Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Raymond Fournier of St. Joseph’s Church in Chester and the Rev. Gil Genest of Lebanon, N.H., co-officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Organist was Rafal Nowak, who accompanied the Rejoice Choir. Cantor was Stan Smith.

Reader was Kevin Sheehan, her son.

Personal reflections were offered by Karen Sheehan, a daughter.

The eulogy was given by the Rev. Richard Cederholm, pastor of the North Springfield Baptist Church.

Bearers were Kelly Sheehan, Bethany Cass, Justin Cass and Andrew Stern, all of Springfield, Amanda Rollins and Rob Rollins, both of Raleigh, N.C.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Masami Kono Rites

BRATTLEBORO — The memorial service for Masami “Sam” Kono, 65, who died Jan. 4, 2002, was held Wednesday at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Thomas Brown, rector, and the Rev. Peter Denny co-officiating.

Organist was Susan Klein. Special music was played by Mr. Kono’s sons, Benjamin Kono on the flute accompanied by Simon Kono on guitar.

Scriptural readings were offered by the Rev. Brown.

A special tribute was offered by the Rev. Denny.

The eulogy was given by Paul Berch.

A personal tribute and words of remembrance were offered by John Pyatak.

Personal memories were offered by his son, Yucan.

Pallbearers were sons, Benjamin Kono, Simon Kono and Daniel (Yucan) Kono, and Jonathan Block, David Mason and Todd Morton.

A reception was held in the church’s undercroft hosted by friends of the family following the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

Louis G. Margiotti

VERGENNES — Louis G. Margiotti, 70, died Jan. 9, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

He was born in February 1931 in Rutland, the son of Frederick and Angelina (Fucci) Margiotti.

He was a member of American Legion Post 14 in Vergennes, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7823 in Middlebury and Addison County Eagles Club in Vergennes.

Mr. Margiotti enjoyed lawn sales, hunting, fishing and cards.

Survivors include his mother of Rutland; two daughters, Linda Allard of New Hampshire and Susan Margiotti of Burlington; two sons, Louis Margiotti Jr. of Virginia and David Margiotti of New Hampshire; a sister, Irene Reid of Rutland; his companion, Jan Bushee of Vergennes and her family; several grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was predeceased by a sister, Veronica Monty.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Vergennes.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

David C. Barton

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — David Calvin Barton, 87, died Jan. 6, 2002, at Mariner Health Care.

He was born in Amesbury, Mass., and had lived in St. Augustine since 1980, moving there from Rutland, Vt.

He graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1936.

Mr. Barton worked as a district supervisor for the State of Vermont Division of Forestry for 37 years.

In 1954 Mr. Barton was the subject of a Norman Rockwell portrait that appeared in the January edition of the Saturday Evening Post.

He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Eileen Barton of St. Augustine; a daughter, Janet Fabozzi of Niceville, Fla.; a son, David Barton of Pepperell, Mass.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Hunter officiating.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kotrady-Hudgins-Croyle Funeral Home in St. Augustine.

H. Paul McCormick

CHITTENDEN — H. Paul McCormick, 86, of Ashtaubla, Ohio, died Jan. 2, 2002, at the home of his daughter in Chittenden.

He was born April 29, 1915, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of John and Mary (Wilding) McCormick.

He worked at the Cooper Bessemer Diesel Engine Plant in Grove City, Pa., during World War II. He later established and operated an office equipment store. For a number of years, he owned and operated Ginny’s Gem and Beach Shop in Geneva-on-the-Lake. Prior to his retirement, he was a color specialist for Plasticolors in Ashtabula.

Mr. McCormick was a 32nd degree Mason. He was the founder of the Ashtabula Rock and Gem Club and a member of the Lake Shore Artists’ Association, Redbrook Boat Club, Sam Wharam Nature Club, the Ashtabula County Chapter of the National Campers’ and Hikers’ Association, and the Second Congregational United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir for more than 40 years.

He was a talented musician, artist, lapidarist, and an avid sailor and racing skipper. He enjoyed playing the electric organ, often entertaining in the nursing homes. He played his guitar with Maynard’s Old Time Fiddlers in Vermont during many foliage visits.

Survivors include a son, John McCormick of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Donna Martin of Chittenden, Patricia DeGeorge of Orlando, Fla., and Sara Rickard of Ashtabula; and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Virginia (Caldwell) McCormick in 1990; a brother, Ralph McCormick; and a sister, Alice Timmins.

The funeral service was held Monday at the Second Congregational United Church of Christ in Ashtabula, with the Rev. Glen Warner, pastor, officiating. Burial took place in Greendale Cemetery in Meadville, Pa.

Dorothy Brand Tanner

Dorothy Brand Tanner, age 90, died early Monday morning in her home at the Park Terrace assisted living home.

Dorothy was born March 7, 1911 in Passaic, NJ, the youngest of 10 children of Mary and Paul Brand. On June 23, 1932, she married Raymond William Tanner. Mr. And Mrs. Tanner lived in Rutherford and retired to Toms River, NJ. Dorothy survived her loving husband by 25 years and lived in Vermont for the past several years.

She lived life to its fullest, enjoying above all things, spending time with family and friends. Dorothy gave unconditionally from the heart to everyone she loved, both to family and friends. She was a shining example of love, honor, and charity.

Dorothy loved spending summers on the New Jersey shore with her family for many years. When her children married and raised families of their own she cherished every moment spent with her grand- and great-grandchildren. Travel, camping, card games and the attention she showered upon those around her, she said, always gave her the vitality and spirit of youth.

She leaves behind two sons, Raymond and Robert Tanner, two daughters-in-law, Bernice and Christina Tanner, six grandchildren, R. Lewis, Patricia, Robert, Timothy, Matthew and Aaron, four great grandchildren, Shawna and Cassandra McClure, Veronica Tanner, and Brooke Tanner, and her nephew and his wife Alfred and Jean Brandle. Dorothy also leaves behind many close and dear friends whom she considered family and will miss her as such.

A memorial Mass will be held at a later date.
