Andrew C. Ryan Rites

BENSON — The funeral service for Andrew C. “Bear” Ryan, 21, who died Jan. 25, 2002, was held Monday at First Congregational Church, UCC, of Fair Haven with the Rev. Marshall Hudson-Knapp, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Family Cemetery in Benson.

Organist was Aileen Durkee. Guitarist and soloist was Steve Kyhill.

Words of remembrance were offered by family members and friends.

Bearers were Anthony Ryan, a brother, Bob DeRosia, Shawn Munger, Jacob Bowen, Adam Hahn and Chad Lequelt.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home of Fair Haven.

Louis A. Houle Rites

MOUNT HOLLY — The funeral service for Louis A. Houle, 83, who died Jan. 26, 2002, was held Monday at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Peter’s Church, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery.

Organist was Dale Keyser.

Reflections were spoken by Richard Dawley.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

John M. Zielonko

SPRINGFIELD — John M. Zielonko, 52, died Jan. 27, 2002, at his home.

He was born Feb. 12, 1949, in Springfield, the son of Victor and Ledia (Krasowski) Zielonko.

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1967.

He was employed at the Parks & Woolson Machine Co. in Springfield as a mechanical engineer and designer for more than 30 years.

Mr. Zielonko was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Springfield Elks Lodge, Springfield Moose Lodge and Polish American Club in Bellows Falls.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, shooting darts and pool and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Tamie (Stillwell) Zielonko of Springfield; a son, Jonathan Zielonko of Springfield; a daughter, Krystal Zielonko of Springfield; a sister, Pamela Matson of Surry, N.H.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Cynthia Hanson; and a brother, Robert Zielonko.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel. Members of the Springfield Elks Lodge will conduct their service at 7 p.m. at the Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Green Mountain Conservation Camp, P.O. Box 115, Hydeville, 05750.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Edwin E. Amsden

UPPER BARTONSVILLE — Edwin E. Amsden, 82, died January 27, 2002, surrounded by his family at his home in Upper Bartonsville.

Born on May 29, 1919, in Andover, Vt., to Elvin and Lillian (Rogers) Amsden.

He attended school in Simonsville and Chester High School.

He served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II.

He was employed by Amsden Lumber Co., Plumb Lumber Co. in Andover, Jones & Lamson Machine Co. in Springfield and both Magic Mountain in Londonderry and Stratton Mountain Ski Area.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10155 of Ludlow and American Legion Post 67 in Chester.

He kept and raised bees and owned the Hidden Valley Apiaries. He also raised peacocks and pheasants. He enjoyed hunting, was an avid cribbage player and was well known for his gardening.

He married Anita Anderson on September 5, 1956. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Candith Amsden of Cavendish and Penny and her husband, Rick Jenkins, of Springfield; a son, Thomas Amsden, and his two children, Orrin and Kate Amsden. Survivors also include three children from a previous marriage, Duane Amsden of Rockingham, Donita Benner of North Springfield and Ronald Amsden of Charlestown; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving are two sisters, Regina Murray of Wilder and Eileen Colburn of Londonderry. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Hodge and Norma Bailey; two brothers, Maynard and Laurence Amsden; and a son, Timothy Amsden in 1979.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester. Friends may call on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, from 7 to 9 p.m. Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester is in charge of arrangements.

Timothy S. Thompson

BENNINGTON — Timothy Shawn Thompson, 44, a former resident of Bennington and more recently of Redondo Beach, Calif., died Jan. 23, 2002, at USC Norris Cancer Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

He was born Dec. 12, 1957, in Bennington, the son of Timothy Thompson and Jane (Blanchard) Bleau.

He graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School. He also attended Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, N.Y.

Mr. Thompson had been employed at the Vermont Steak House, the Eldorado Club casino and Hollywood Park casino, both in California.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was an avid bicyclist.

Survivors include his mother, Jane Bleau of Bennington; a son, Mark Crawford of Bellflower, Calif.; his maternal grandmother, Grace Blanchard of Bennington; his caregiver, Brenda Hill of Downey, Calif.; two sisters, Tracy Thompson of Merritts Inlet, S.C., and Terry Young of Golden, Calif.; a brother, Ty Thompson of Hollywood, Fla.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The memorial service celebrating Mr. Thompson’s life will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of First Baptist Church in Bennington, officiating. A private committal service will be held in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or USC Norris Cancer Center, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Grace R. Cole

WESTMINSTER — Grace F. Cole, 71, died Jan. 25, 2002, at her home.

She was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Ludlow, the daughter of Roy and Rosa (Anthony) Furman.

She graduated from Black River Academy in Ludlow.

Mrs. Cole worked in the apple orchards in Maine and as a waitress and hostess at Fox Run in Ludlow. She also worked at Gill Home in Ludlow as a cook, operated a Davy Jones Fish Locker in Ludlow with her husband and was a machinist in Lebanon, N.H.

She enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and raising English bulldogs.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Cole of Belize and David Cole of Barnard; a daughter, Kelly Baker of Putney; a brother, Warren Furman of Rutland; three sisters, Cora Sumner, with whom she made her home in Westminster, Lula Rathburn of Farmington, Maine, and Hazel Gorsky of Springfield; eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

She was predeceased by her husband in 2000; a great-grandson; three sisters, Ruth Belisle, Pearl Picard and Helen Furman; and two brothers, Alden Furman and Lee Furman.

The funeral service will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Olga G. Davis

CHARLESTOWN, N.H. — Olga G. Davis, 68, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Wallingford, Vt., the daughter of Felix and Rose (Fredrick) Balestra.

She received her education in Westminster, Vt., and graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1951.

Mrs. Davis worked as a dispatcher for the Charlestown Police Department for 22 years, and then went to work part-time in the Charlestown Town Clerk’s Office.

Survivors include two sons, Michael and Peter Davis, both of Charlestown; a daughter, Susan Glimenakis of Keene; two granddaughters; four sisters, Lucretia McBride of New York, Lucia and Giacomena Balestra of East Clarendon, Vt., and Rose Blanchard of Wallingford; a cousin; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph Balestra, Carl Balestra, Eugene Balestra and Levi Balestra.

A private committal service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to David’s House, P.O. Box 660, Lebanon, N.H., 03766.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Stringer Charlestown Memorial Chapel.

Theresa L. Cook

NORTH BENNINGTON — Theresa L. Cook, 90, died Jan. 27, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

She was born April 30, 1911, in North Bennington, the daughter of Charles and Minnie Bell (Thomas) Sweet.

She received her education in Bennington.

She married Edward Cook on Oct. 31, 1924, in Cambridge, N.Y. He died in 1972.

Mrs. Cook had been employed at the former EZ Mill and Prospect Nursing Home.

She was a member of Harvest Christian Ministries in Bennington, and enjoyed writing religious poems.

Survivors include four daughters, Ruth Brownell of North Bennington, Isabelle Moon of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., June LeBarron of Pittsfield, Mass., and Ida Eggsware of Bennington; a son, Forrest Cook of Greenwich, N.Y.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Betty Cook; and three sons, Robert Cook, James Cook and Charles Cook.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Lebert, pastor of Harvest Christian Ministries, officiating. Burial will take place in Hinsdillville Cemetery in North Bennington.

Friends may call Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Green Meadows Church in White Creek, N.Y., through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Carl A. Pratt Jr.

SOUTH EGREMONT, Mass. — Carl A. Pratt Jr., 81, died Jan. 13, 2002, at Fairview Hospital.

He was born July 13, 1920, in Shrewsbury, Vt., the son of Carl Sr. and Mary (Townsend) Pratt.

He graduated from Black River Academy in Ludlow, Vt., in 1938. He also attended the University of Vermont.

He married Mary Thomas on Sept. 3, 1942, in Rutland, Vt.

Mr. Pratt was employed by Bryant Chucking Grinder Co. in Springfield, Vt., as a machinist for 42 years, and retired in 1982 as a salesman.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving in the Easy Company 106th infantry division of the 423rd regiment.

He was a member of the James A. Modolo Veterans of Foreign Wars 8348.

Mr. Pratt and his wife started a senior bowling league at the Cove Bowling Lanes in Great Barrington.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Carl Pratt III of South Lyon, Mich., and Brian Pratt of West Stockbridge; a daughter, Mary Ferguson of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Jane Fitzpatrick of Stockbridge and Mary Ann Snyder of Largo, Fla., and Stockbridge; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Zoa Campetti, in 1996.

The funeral service was held Jan. 16, at South Egremont Congregational Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Egremont Congregational Church or South Egremont Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, Mass., 01230.

Mary G. Prescott

HANOVER, N.H. — The memorial service for Mary Gillett Prescott, 89, formerly of Woodstock, Vt., who died Jan. 27, 2002, will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock, Vt.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock, Vt.
