William J. Lourie

WEST RUPERT — William “Bill” J. Lourie, 76, died Jan. 31, 2002, at Centers for Living and Rehab-ili-tation in Bennington.

He was born Dec. 29, 1925, in West Rupert, the son of Willard and Mary (Wilson) Lourie.

He was a lifelong dairy farmer on Winoka Farm in West Rupert. He enjoyed raising and training standard-breds with his brothers, and watching them race at the harness track.

Mr. Lourie had been a lister for the town of Rupert as well as an ap-praiser for the state for many years.

He was a longtime member of the Rupert Fire Company. He had been a member and trustee for many years at the Congregational Church and the Merck Forest and Farmland Foundation, both in Rupert. He was also a member of the Morning Flower Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons and the U.S. Trotting Association.

He enjoyed hunting, bowling, baseball and softball.

Survivors include his mother of West Rupert; his wife, Ellen (Gould) Lourie of West Rupert, whom he married on May 28, 1949, in Salem; a daughter, Wanda Putnam Al-mosnino of West Rupert; a sister, Marion Sheldon of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; two brothers, Thomas Lourie and Stanley Lourie of West Rupert; two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters and a step great-grandson; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, J. Wilson Lourie.

The memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Con-gre-gational Church in Rupert with the Rev. Tim Forester, pastor, officiating. The family will greet friends at 1:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will take place at a later date in Rupert Cem-etery.

A reception will be held downstairs in the church following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Congregational Church in Rupert, in care of Deborah Mc-Keighan, P.O. Box 686, Salem, N.Y., 12865.

Arrangements are under the direction of the McClellan Funeral Service in Salem, N.Y.

Jane F. Harrington

BENNINGTON — Jane Fillmore Harrington, 67, longtime resident of Buskirk, N.Y., died Jan. 31, 2002, at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington.

She was born Nov. 9, 1934, in White Creek, N.Y., the daughter of Mar-shall and Jennie (Allen) Fill-more.

She graduated from the former Hoosick Falls High School in New York.

She was employed at Stanley Tool in Shaftsbury for 32 years until the time of her retirement.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Hale of North Bennington; a son, Joseph Carknard of Daleville, Ala.; six grandchildren; a sister, Louise Ogert of Bennington; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased a sister, Anne Cahill; and her companion, George Hunt.

The memorial service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington. Burial will take place in Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, N.Y., at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Neuroscience De-partment at Albany Medical Center, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Edwin E. Amsden Rites

CHESTER — The funeral service for Edwin E. Amsden, 82, who died Jan. 27, 2002, was held Thursday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home in Chester with the Rev. Earl Bishop officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Simonsville.

A reception was held at the American Legion Post 67 in Chester after the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home.

Maria C. Stevens

LUDLOW — Maria “Mary” C. Stevens, 83, died Jan. 31, 2002, at Cedar Hill Health Care Center in Windsor.

She was born Sept. 26, 1918, in Tufo di Minturno, Latina, Italy, the daughter of Pasquale and Maria Grazzia (Mazzucco) Ciufo.

She received her education in Italy, and came to the United States in 1935. She became a citizen in 1944.

She married Albert Stevens on Feb. 14, 1942, in Ludlow.

Mrs. Stevens worked as a spooler for Gay Brothers Woolen Mill and Mack Moulding, both in Cavendish. She also worked at Fox Run and on Okemo Mountain, both in Ludlow.

She was a member of the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow.

She enjoyed cooking, walking and working in her flower garden.

Survivors include a son, George Stevens of Chester; two daughters, Linda Bennett of Cavendish and Sandra Guillow of Oakdale, Conn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jennie Templin of Montebello, Calif., and Louise Hack of Jacksonville, N.C.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1989; a sister, Lena Ciufo in 1942; and three brothers, Angelo Ciufo in 1963, John Ciufo in 1990 and Silvio Ciufo in 1996.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow with the Rev. George Paulin, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Pleasant View Cemetery in Ludlow.

Calling hours will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Hill Health Care Cen-ter, Cedar Hill Drive, Windsor, 05089.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Gladys Bishop rites

RUTLAND — Memorial services for Gladys Savage Bishop, 103, who died Jan. 28, 2002, were held Saturday at the Trinity Episcopal Church. The Rev. Christopher A. Powell, rector, officiated.

Betty A. Clark was organist.

Earle J. Bishop, a son, wrote words of remembrance, which were read by EJay Bishop, grandson.

Members of the West Rutland American Legion Post 87 Auxilliary were honorary bearers.

Rose Cioffi rites

RUTLAND — A funeral Mass for Rose J. Cioffi, 94, who died Jan. 31, 2002, was held Saturday at the St. Peter Church. The Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, officiated.

Helen Davidson was vocalist. John Riddle was organist. James Davidson was reader.

Alfred Flory, Al Michael Cioffi, Joseph Tilden and James Davidson were ministers of the altar.

Christopher Dunbar, Mark Cioffi, Louis Belfore, Steve Canney, Jay Sabataso and Randy Chadburn were bearers.

Frank Tyminski rites

WEST RUTLAND — Funeral services for Frank A. Tyminski, 66, a West Rutland selectman who died Jan. 30, 2002, were held Saturday at St. Bridget’s Church in West Rutland. The Rev. James McShane, pastor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Rutland, officiated. Burial will be at a later date at St. Bridget’s Cemetery.

John A. Clark was minister of the altar. Nancy Manning was reader. Angela Lundrigan was organist. Theresa Bartlett was vocalist.

Joseph Cichon, George Chamberland, Chuck Davis and Daniel Tyminski, all nephews, and Joseph Pomykala, Jay Pomykala and Christopher Somers were bearers.

West Rutland American Legion Post #87 members provided military services. Commander Joseph Serrani and past commander Wally Pratt were flag folders. Mr. Pratt made the presentation to the family.

Shirley A. Lane

HYDEVILLE — Shirley Ann Derouchie Lane, 62, died Feb. 4, 2002, at her daughter’s home in Hydeville.

She was born Oct. 18, 1939, in New Haven, the daughter of Marshall and Hazel (Cole) Dumas.

She married Charles Derouchie of Moose Creek, Ontario, on Dec. 7, 1957. He died in 1971. She later married Ret. Maj. George Lane Jr. of West Rutland on June 5, 1976. He died in 1977.

Mrs. Lane was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and had served as past state and department president. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. She was also a member of the board of the Salvation Army and served as secretary for the VFW Loyalty Day Parade for five years.

She enjoyed bingo.

Survivors include two daughters, Susan Peltier of Hydeville and Shirley Principe of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; three sons, Delphis Derouchie of Nassau, Minn., Charles Derouchie and Billy Derouchie, both of Fair Haven; a sister, Esther Hier of Fair Haven; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Wesley Dumas and Frank Dumas.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Greenwich, N.Y.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Community Cancer Center at Rutland Regional Medical Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home.

Charles L. Castle

Charles Leon Castle, 81, of Rutland died February 2, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Rutland, July 23, 1920, the son of William and Elizabeth (Genette) Castle.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1938 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in August 1942. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a carpenter’s mate first class.

He married Beverly Wilson on August 23, 1943.

Mr. Castle was employed by Howe Richardson Scale Co. as a master pattern maker and later as a security officer. He then went to work as a security officer for Rutland Regional Medical Center for 10 years, retiring in 1997.

He enjoyed music and was an accomplished clarinet player. He and a small group of musician friends entertained residents at local nursing homes for many years.

Mr. Castle was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting as a member of the Belgo Camp in Castleton. He also loved deep sea and fresh water fishing. He enjoyed the Boston Red Sox.

Mr. Castle was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Club and the American Legion Post 31.

He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Christ the King Church and was co-chairman of the Bishop’s Fund Campaign for many years.

Survivors include his son, Charles W. Castle of Barre, Vt., his wife Lisa and their daughters, Larissa and Lisabeth; four daughters, Barbara Castle Hanson of Rutland, her husband Howard and their son, William Patrick McGrath; Ruthmary Castle Gembarowski of Satellite Beach, Florida, and her husband Jerry and sons, Charles and Christopher; Anne Marie Castle Piggott of Hebron, Conn., her husband Terry and sons, Justin Michael and Daniel Matthew; Jean Elizabeth Castle McLaughlin of Dumont, New Jersey, her husband Richard, daughter Amanda DiLullo, son James DiLullo, son Ricky McLaughlin and daughter Charlotte McLaughlin. Grandson Charles Gembarowski and wife Melissa’s son, Charles Joseph, will be born in March and will be the first of “Grampa Charlie’s” great-grandchildren. Survivors also include seven nephews and their families.

He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly, in 1986; two brothers, Arthur Castle and William Castle; four sisters, Helen Pauli, May LaValley, Mildred Randall and Kay Hebert.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Church. Private burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging, Eastridge Professional Bldg., Unit 2B, 1085 Route 4 East, Rutland, Vt., 05701.

Catherine M. Jackson

WALLINGFORD — The funeral service for Catherine Marie Jackson, 63, who died Feb. 3, 2002, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. Burial will take place at a later date in Green Hill Cemetery.

Omitted from the obituary was a brother, Joseph Faignant of Hamden, Conn., who survives her.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720.
