Maria C. Stevens Rites

LUDLOW — The funeral Mass for Maria C. Stevens, 83, who died Jan. 31, 2002, was held Monday at the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow with the Rev. George Paulin, pastor, officiating.

Organist was Betty Severin and soloist was Don Hofer.

Bearers were Mark Thurston, George Stevens, Jonathan Stevens and William Guillow.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Alice Austin

WHITEHALL, N.Y. — Alice Austin, 91, a former resident of Sager’s Nursing Home in Fair Haven, Vt., died Feb. 3, 2002, at Indian River Rehabilitation and Health Center in Granville.

She was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Whitehall, the daughter of Francis and Maude (Kana) Rivette.

She had been employed as a cashier at the Grand Union and Chase’s Market in Whitehall.

Mrs. Austin enjoyed cooking, baking and crocheting.

Survivors include four daughters, Marion Ames of Whitehall and Dunedin, Fla., Marge Lance of Lake Elsinore, Calif., Kathleen Blanchard and Connie Trevellyan, both of Whitehall; two sons, Michael Mahar of New Platz and John Austin of Whitehall; a brother, Wilbur Rivette of Whitehall; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Edward Mahar in 1944; her second husband, Frank Austin in 1981; two brothers, Walter Rivette and Clarence Rivette; two sisters, Justina McCabe and Agnes Rivette; and a grandson.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Hope Church in Whitehall with the Rev. William A. Gorman, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Cambridge.

Family and friends are invited to the home of Connie and Al Trevellyan, 7 Boardman St., Whitehall, for a time of fellowship and refreshments following the funeral Mass.

Friends may call Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Jillson Funeral Home in Whitehall.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Skenesborough EMS, P.O. Box 333, Whitehall, 12887, the Skenesborough First Responders, P.O. Box 338, Whitehall, 12887, or the Slate Valley Continuous Care Center, Fair Haven, Vt., 05743.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Jillson Funeral Home.

Charles W. Pierce

MIDDLEBURY — Charles W. Pierce, 79, died Feb. 3, 2002, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born July 4, 1922, in Middlebury, the son of Fred and Carrie (Everts) Pierce.

He attended local schools and Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts. He received his bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College and his master’s degree from Middlebury’s Bread Loaf School of English, and studied at Princeton University and Stratford-on-Avon, England.

He married Elizabeth Goe on June 27, 1953, in Bergenfield, N.J.

Mr. Pierce began his teaching career in Bergenfield, and served as chairman of the English departments in Sparta, N.J., and Ocean City, N.J. He retired in 1981 after 33 years of teaching. He was also a published author, writing “Samantha’s Masquerade” for teens.

Mr. Pierce served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He enjoyed reading, golfing and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Maj. Susan Hay of Newport News, Va.; a son, Robert Pierce II of East Hartford, Conn.; and a cousin.

He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Pierce.

There will be no calling hours.

A private graveside memorial service with military honors will be held at a later date in Prospect Cemetery in East Middlebury.

Gertrude E. Proctor

Gertrude Ellsworth Proctor died Tuesday, February 5, 2002, at Roncalli Health Center in Rutland. She was born April 18, 1905, daughter of Jesse (McInnis) Kilgallen and Martin Kilgallen in Barton, Vermont.

After graduating from Barton Academy in 1925, she entered the University of Vermont, where she planned to major in English and specialize in English Literature. In 1927, in order to help finance her university education, she accepted a teaching position at the Wright School in West Glover, returning to the university in 1928, graduating in 1930 with a B.S. degree in education with a major in English. She received her master of arts in English degree in 1947 from St. Michael’s College.

Mrs. Proctor began her teaching career at Underhill High School, Underhill, Vt., in the fall of 1930. She remained at UHS until 1947, serving as principal from 1944-1947.

In the fall of 1947 Mrs. Proctor accepted a teaching position at Rockland High School, Rockland, Mass., serving as senior English instructor from 1947-1970 and as English department head from 1949-1970. While at RHS she formed the Pentelic Chapter of the National Honor Society in 1956. She also supervised the Ellen Conway Spellman Scholarship Oratorical Contest, the American Legion Oratorical Contest, served as chairman of the English Committee for Curriculum Development and chairman of Committee for the Development and Preparation of Curriculum Guides.

Mrs. Proctor was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and traveled and studied in England in the summer of 1964 and attended lectures at Oxford University and the University of London.

In 1966 she supervised a group of students from RHS traveling to England and studying English Literature at the University of London. The students then went on to the University of Caen in Normandy, France. She also made study tours to Italy, Scotland and Ireland, as well as summer studies at Harvard University.

Mrs. Proctor was elected to Delta Kappa Gamma Society (International Society for Women Educators) in 1964 and elected as one of the Outstanding Educators of America in 1970.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Raymond Ellsworth in 1974 and by her second husband, Eben Proctor in 1995. She is survived by her brother, Leo Kilgallen and his wife, Kathleen, a niece, Jane Ann Curran and her children and grandchildren and a nephew, Martin Kilgallen and his wife, Jane, and their children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home. Visiting hours are prior to the celebration of the Mass between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Blue Hills Cemetery in Braintree, Mass.

Gloria G. Gauthier

SOUTH WALLINGFORD — Gloria G. Gauthier, 60, died Feb. 5, 2002, at her residence.

She was born Aug. 4, 1941, in San Diego, the daughter of Russell and Esther (Wesloe) Stover.

She was employed by the Marriott’s Big Boy Restaurant for 17 years in California, and after moving to Vermont, she and her husband operated Charlie’s General Store and Charlie’s Cleaning Angels in South Wallingford.

Mrs. Gauthier was a member of the El Toro Lake Forrest Lioness Club and Laguna Hill Lutheran Church while living in Orange County, Calif. She was also a member of the South Wallingford Congregational Church, Wallingford Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Maple Valley Grange in South Wallingford.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie Gauthier, whom she married on June 6, 1985; a daughter, Tamara Kreisler of Rutland; a son, R. Timothy Reynolds of Rutland; two stepdaughters, Sharon Redfern of Merrimac, N.H., and Diane Gauthier of Honolulu; two brothers, Ronald Rose of Fountain Valley Beach, Calif., and William Rose of Orange, Calif.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the South Wallingford Congregational Church. Burial will take place at a later date in Green Hill Cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to South Wallingford Congregational Church, in care of the Rev. Lawrence Switzer, 155 Dorr Drive #4, Rutland, 05701, or American Cancer Society, Vermont Division Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, 05602.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Catherine M. Jackson Rites

WALLINGFORD — The funeral Mass for Catherine Marie Jackson, 63, who died Feb. 3, 2002, was celebrated Tuesday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor, as celebrant.

Organist was James Cassarino and vocalist was Karen Burgess.

Bearers were Edward Loso, Thomas Jackson, Albert Jackson, Joshua Jackson, Keith Bagley and Michael Bagley Sr.

A Christian prayer service was held Monday afternoon at the Aldous Funeral Home by the Rev. Houle, and a fraternal service was held Monday evening at the funeral home by American Legion Post 31 Ladies Auxiliary with President Claire Dunshee and Chaplain Chris Howard presiding.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Brendan S. Mulcahy Rites

BRANDON — The funeral Mass for Brendan Sean Mulcahy, 36, who died Jan. 29, 2002, was celebrated Tuesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon with the Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor, as celebrant. Deacon Gary Griffin assisted. A private burial followed in Pine Hill Cemetery.

Organist was Stu James and soloist was Ed Murphy.

The vigil service was held Monday evening at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home with Deacon Gary Griffin presiding.

The family received friends in the church parish hall for a time of fellowship and reflection following the Mass.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Ivan M. McGranaghan

EAST CHARLESTON — Ivan M. McGranaghan, 74, died Feb. 3, 2002, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, N.H.

He was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Corinth, the son of Joseph and Florence (Parker) Donahue.

He attended school in Corinth and Montpelier, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at age 16 until they discovered his age.

He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served with the Seabees in the Pacific Theater.

He married Norma Waring on Dec. 31, 1996, in Lyndon.

Mr. McGranaghan worked at St. Johnsbury Trucking in Barre for 13 years and later for several trucking companies including Ned Pettingill, DeCato Brothers and Rousse Trucking. He also operated his own truck for a time before going to work for Evan’s Motor Fuels, retiring in 1993. After retiring he continued to work part time for Evan’s.

He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2571 and the Seabees Island X-1 White River and a past member of American Legion Post 26, all in White River Junction.

Mr. McGranaghan enjoyed hunting, fishing and refinishing furniture. He also learned to fly and obtained his pilot’s license.

Survivors include his wife of East Charleston; two sons, Steve of Montpelier and Dana of Enfield, N.H.; two daughters, Lori Dunn of Quechee and Lisa Potwin of Woodstock; two stepdaughters, Meredith Gebhardt of Lyndonville and Terry Bolduc of West Canaan, N.H.; three stepsons, Erik Waring of Kirby, Jason Waring of Sheffield and John Dauphinais of Florida; a sister, Nona Flanders of White River Junction; a brother, Lee McGranaghan of East Bethany, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Joseph McGranaghan; and two brothers, Douglas and Clifton McGranaghan.

Friends may call Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date in Cutter Cemetery in Montpelier.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 485, Williston, 05495.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.
