Constance B. Sweda

BENNINGTON — Constance B. (Cumm) “Connie” Sweda, 64, of Bennington died April 14, 2002, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington as a result of cancer.

Mrs. Sweda was born Aug. 22, 1937, in Elizabethtown, N.Y., the daughter of Henry Ira and Grace (Shappy) Cumm.

She attended schools in New York state and was married to Robert Sweda on June 11, 1983. Mr. Sweda died previously.

Mrs. Sweda worked as a certified nursing assistant at Albany County Nursing Home. Prior to her retirement she was honored as a nominee for Aide of the Year.

She loved country music, dancing, and summer cookouts.

Mrs. Sweda is survived by two sons, Edwin H. Provost, Jr. of Bennington and Scott J. Provost of Hilo, Hawaii; two sisters, Rhoda A. Ormsby of Waterville, Maine, and Eleanor R. Gumlaw of Green Island, N.Y.; and a brother, Terry H. Cumm of Keeseville, N.Y.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington, with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bennington, officiating.

Friends may call on Thursday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Committal services and burial be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Memorial cemetery in Willsboro, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Connie Sweda Memorial Fund, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

May S. Churchill

WINDSOR — May S. Churchill, 83, died April 14, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born Sept. 4, 1918, in East Charleston, the daughter of Bion and Edith (Hudson) Stevens.

She received her schooling in Charleston schools. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Lyndon State College and a master’s degree from Eastern Connecticut College.

She began her teaching career in a one-room school in rural Vermont, and retired from the profession 40 years later in Montville, Conn. Following her retirement in 1979, she moved to Windsor. She remained active and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe.

She enjoyed quilting and reading, as well as practicing and playing the recorder with The Bugbee Recorders in White River Junction. She enjoyed skiing and snowshoeing in the winter, and hiking, golfing, swimming, and kayaking during the summer. She was also a member of a number of organizations including Heart of the Land Quilting Guild, The 251 Club of Vermont and the Windsor Country Club.

She volunteered at Mount Ascutney Hospital, the American Red Cross, Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports and Windsor Public Library.

Survivors include a son, Steven Cahill of Cornish, N.H.; a daughter, Gerry Ann Cahill of Barton; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two husbands, John W. Cahill and Leland Churchill.

Friends may call at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Old South Congregational Church in Windsor, with the Rev. Amanda Lape-Freeberg, pastor, officiating.

Burial will be held on July 6 in the East Charleston cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Windsor Public Library, 43 State St., Windsor, 05089, or to the charity of one’s choice.

David B. Wallace Sr.

WALPOLE, N.H. — David B. Wallace Sr., 85, died April 14, 2002 at Genesis Elder Care in Lebanon.

He was born March 16, 1917, the son of John and Elizabeth (Mosley) Wallace.

He was a graduate of Kermit High School in Texas.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in Germany, Africa and Italy, and was part of 85 bombing missions on a B-17 bomber.

He married Carolyn Marcy on Feb. 27, 1944.

He worked for Northeastern Culvert and retired in 1976 as plant manager.

Survivors include two sons, David Wallace Jr. of Lebanon and Stephen Wallace of Worcester, Mass.; a brother, Robert Wallace of Texas; two sisters, Ruby Burgess of Florida and Irene Zampell of Georgia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Walpole cemetery, with the Rev. Shawn Therian officiating.

The Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, Vt., is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Philip R. Hughes

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Philip R. Hughes, 66, died April 14, 2002, at the Springfield Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 9, 1935, in Colebrook, N.H., the son of Richard and Carolyn (Alls) Hughes.

He attended schools in Colebrook, and graduated from Colebrook Academy. He attended the University of New Hampshire, and later graduated from the New England College of Optometry in Boston in 1958.

He married Jeannine Dumont on Sept. 2, 1957, in Colebrook.

He later served in the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1964, stationed in Chinon, France, for several years, and later at Fort Mead, Md.

He and his wife had resided since 1964 in Springfield, where he operated his own optometry practice for many years, retiring in 1999.

He was a longtime member of the Springfield Lions Club and a member and past president of the Springfield Booster Club. He was a member and past president of the New England Council of Optometry, and was also a member of the National Council of Optometry. He was an avid Springfield school sports fan, and was an active volunteer for the school’s sports programs, through the Parks & Recreation Department.

Dr. Hughes enjoyed golfing, skiing, hiking and traveling.

Survivors include his wife of Springfield; three sons, Richmond Hughes of Springfield, Mark Hughes of Underhill and Stephen Hughes of Lakewood, Colo.; a daughter, Lisa Putnam of Littleton, Colo.; his father of Ludlow; a brother, Howard Hughes of Gray, Maine; a sister, Nancy Field of Glens Falls, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at noon at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield, with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Booster Club, PO Box 666, Springfield, 05156, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Green Mountain Chapter, PO Box 1139, Montpelier, 05601.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Dennis G. Ameden

WESTON — Dennis Guy Ameden, 81, died April 14, 2002, at his home.

He was born in Jamaica on April 10, 1921, the son of Wesley I. and Hazel B. Ameden.

He was a craftsman of wood and stone, learning at an early age from his father. His craftsmanship can be seen in many area homes.

He came from a large family, with six brothers and two sisters.

He married Barbara J. Foster on March 18, 1944, in Weston. They built their Weston home and lived there for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife of Weston; two sons, Dale Ameden of Jamaica and Bradford F. Ameden of Weston; three daughters, Bonnie J. Preedom of Weston, Denise C. Reed of Claremont, N.H., and Donna Sue Hain of Williston; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A private service will be held for the immediate family.

The Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes of Chester are in charge of the arrangements.

Ilze E. Vitols

WOODSTOCK — Ilze E. Vitols, 93, died April 14, 2002, at the Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.

She was born Aug. 14, 1908, in Latvia, the daughter of Janis and Ilze Brencis.

She married Karlis Vitols on April 21, 1930, and moved to Rutland from Germany in 1951. Mr. Vitols died in 1955. Mrs. Vitols had resided in Woodstock with her son and his family since 1994.

She is survived by her son, Imants Vitols of Woodstock; and four grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 5 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church in Woodstock. The Rev. Christina Brannock-Wanter will officiate.

Burial will be at a later date in the Evergreen cemetery in Rutland.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ottauquechee Health Foundation, 32 Pleasant St., Woodstock, 05091.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home, 1 Rose Hill, Woodstock.

Sarah A. Crandell

PLYMOUTH — Sarah A. “Sally” Crandell, 58, died April 15, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Dr. Henry Dantzig

EAST RANDOLPH — Dr. Henry Dantzig, 85, of East Randolph died April 14, 2002, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.

Arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Larry Bohen Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Larry Bohen, who died April 8, 2002, was held Monday at the Davis Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiated. Cremation will follow at Valley Crematory in White River Junction.

A burial service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s cemetery in Springfield with full military honors.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Florence R. McCormick

POULTNEY — Florence R. McCormick, 81, died April 9, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 24, 1920, in Rutland, the daughter of Mathew and Rhoda (Langley) Ryan.

Mrs. McCormick was the postmaster in East Poultney for 32 years, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Catherine 200, the Retired Teachers Association of Rutland County, the Poultney Rescue Squad Auxiliary, the National League of Postmasters, RSVP of Poultney, the Poultney Valley Snowmobile Devils and was a volunteer for the Poultney Thrift Shop.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Holden of Rutland and Nan McCormick of East Poultney; a brother, Charles Ryan of Comfort, Texas; four sisters, Kathleen Pellegrino of Castleton, Helena Branchaud of Rutland, Mary Spenard of Stamford, Conn., and Marjorie Casagrande of Ridgefield, Conn.; and two granddaughters.

She was predeceased by her husband, F. Paul McCormick in 1977; by two brothers, Matthew and Leo Ryan; and a sister, Johanna Ward.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven. The committal service will take place at a later date in St. Bridget’s cemetery in West Rutland.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Poultney Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 76, Poultney, 05764.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.
