DUMMERSTON — Robert H. Fitts, 79, died Aug. 27, 2002, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Leontina Calabro

NORTH BENNINGTON — Leontina Calabro, 77, died Aug. 26, 2002, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Dennis D. O’Neill

BENNINGTON — Dennis D. O’Neill, 86, died Aug. 27, 2002, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Hazel B. Pearson

NEWPORT — Hazel Brooks Pearson, 100, formerly of West Brattleboro, died Aug. 26, 2002, at Bel-Aire Quality Care in Newport following a period of declining health.

She was born June 5, 1902, in Townshend, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Supry) Brooks.

She graduated from Newport (N.H.) High School.

She married Robert Pearson on Sept. 15, 1921, in Brattleboro. He died in 1968.

Mrs. Pearson was employed as a nurse’s aide at the Brattleboro Retreat for 30 years, retiring in 1962.

She was a former member of the Grange and attended the Center Congregational Church in Dummerston.

She enjoyed flower gardening and knitting, and for many years made stockings and mittens for area children during the Christmas holiday season.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Clark of Newport; a brother, retired Col. Roy Brooks of Newfane; five grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 14 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Charlena Kneeland; a granddaughter and great-granddaughter; two brothers, Arthur Brooks and Mortimer Brooks; and two sisters, Bertha Patten and Ruth Wiggins.

The graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. in Woodlawn cemetery in Newfane with the Rev. William Warriner, pastor of Center Congregational Church in Dummerston, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grave Cottage Hospital, P.O. Box 216, Townshend, 05353, Attn: Mr. Al LaRochette.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Richard M. Cunningham

MECO, N.Y. — Richard M. Cunningham, 87, died Aug. 25, 2002, at the home of his daughter after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 28, 1914, in Dorset, Vt., the son of John and Florence (Kelly) Cunningham.

He graduated from Burr Burton Seminary in Manchester, Vt.

He married Rose Billow on July 24, 1936. She died in 1994.

Mr. Cunningham was employed by the Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. for 40 years, retiring as line supervisor in 1974.

He was a veteran of World War II having served with the 570 Signal Company attached to the 70th Infantry Division. He received a commendation for exceptionally meritorious service in action in the vicinity of St. Jean Rohrback, France.

He was a member of the Johnstown Moose, the Concordia Club and the Knights of Columbus in Gloversville.

Survivors include two daughters, Agnes Otruba of Johnstown and Helen Merrill of Winthrop, Maine; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, John Cunningham; two brothers, John Burton Jr. and Edward Cunningham; and two sisters, Dorothy Farrell and Nora Gilbert.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc. in Gloversville with Bishop Norman F. Strauss, rector of Trinity Anglican Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain Valley Hospice, 73 N. Main St., Gloversville, 12078.

Arrangements are under the direction of the John. W. Finocan Funeral Home.

Patricia A. Racine Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Patricia A. Racine, who died Aug. 23, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Vincent J. Coppola, CSC, associate pastor of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, officiating. Burial follow in White Chapel cemetery.

Assisting at the service for the hearing impaired was Cindy Watson.

Bearers were Ken Bleau, Daniel Prouty, Neil Metcalf, Ken Bleau Jr., Steven Pratt and Earl Bump.

A reception for friends and family was held at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Lucie and Daniel Prouty following the committal service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Stella A. Guess

CLARENDON — Stella A. Guess, 51, a former resident of Rutland, died Sept. 3, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 27, 1950, in Rutland, the daughter of Raymond and Stella (Czachor) Daley.

She graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1969.

Ms. Guess was employed at Price Chopper in Rutland for many years.

She was a member of Christ the King Church.

Survivors include her mother of Rutland; her companion, Russell Hyjek of Clarendon; two sons, Eric Guess of Orlando, Fla., and Jason Leonard of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a brother, Mark Daley of Rutland; three sisters, Bonnie Stevens of Pittsford, Patricia Daley of Rutland and Karen Edmunds of Pawlet; nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father in 1999.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association-Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05701, or Rutland County Humane Society, Stevens Road, Pittsford, 05763.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Robert Lewis

BRANDON — Robert Lewis, 42, formerly of Springfield, died Sept. 4, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Danby.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Gladys E. Matheson Stocker

The memorial service for Gladys E. Matheson Stocker, 89, of Rutland, who died Aug. 29, 2002, will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, P.O. Box 97296, Department 1800, Washington, D.C., 20077-7660.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Michael Graziano

WELLS — The graveside service for Michael Graziano, who died Aug. 25, 2002, will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the Wells Village cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Zelker officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9257, 4 Fairfield Drive, Patterson, N.Y., 12563, as a scholarship in Mr. Graziano’s memory.

Carmen M. Chmiel Rites

The funeral Mass for Carmen M. Chmiel, 87, of Rutland, who died Sept. 2, 2002, was celebrated Wednesday at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. John Herbert, assistant pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Calvary cemetery.

Organist was John Riddle and vocalist was Helen Davidson.

Bearers were John Smiel Jr., Stephen Smiel, Michael DeBlois, Nick Kazakis, Harry Cummings and Forrest Adams.

A prayer service was offered Wednesday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Herbert.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Harry McCullough Rites

PROCTOR — The funeral service for Harry “Leslie” McCullough, 74, who died Aug. 30, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford with the Rev. Russ Gates, pastor of the Union Church of Proctor, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford.

American Legion Post 3 of Rutland provided military honors. James Burke presented the flag to Mr. McCullough’s wife, Lois.

Bearers were Timothy Barrett, Burton McCullough Jr., Daniel Dahlin, John Tower, Frank Grochot and Richard Davis.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Pauline H. Gallagher

SOUTH DORSET — Pauline H. Gallagher, age 70, a resident of South Dorset, died peacefully Tuesday evening, September 3, 2002, at her Kelleher Road Home surrounded by her family following an illness. She was born in Winhall, Vermont, the daughter of Herbert J. and Viola (Hoard) Hodgin. She grew up in Manchester and attended local schools.

She married Henry Gallagher in Saint Jerome Church in East Dorset. The Gallaghers moved to Milford, Conn., where they raised a loving family and remained for 35 years. Retirement brought them back to Vermont where they settled in South Dorset. Pauline or “Polly” as she was known was an independent hard working mother of three sons. She kept herself very busy with family and friends. She enjoyed tending to her flower gardens and feeding her birds, and loved to travel. Reading a good book and some social conversation over tea were favorite pastimes. She was a loving mother and grandmother and when family took sick she was always there to provide the special care they needed. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Mrs. Gallagher is survived by her three sons and their wives, Terrance and Teresa Gallagher of Shelton, Conn., Michael and Judy Gallagher of Prospect, Conn., and Richard and Renee Gallagher of Raleigh, N.C. Her sisters, Angie Allen Slade of South Londonderry, Beatrice Cole of Manchester, Maisie O’Leary of Dorset, Beryl Sprague of South Dorset and Faye Hodgin of Manchester. Also, five grandchildren, Payten, Ryan, Michael, Emma and Brigitte. Also, many nieces and nephews including great and great-great. She was predeceased by Husband Henry in 1997; her sisters, Margaret Lampson, Adelle Harris and Sylvia O’Dell; and her brothers, Johnny and Percy Hodgin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 11 a.m. at Saint Jerome’s Church in East Dorset, followed by a graveside service, where her cremated remains will be committed to the Earth in Saint Jerome’s cemetery. Father Justin Baker will officiate. Following the services, family and friends will gather for a time of fellowship and refreshment at the Manchester VFW.

There are to be no calling hours.

Catherine M. Cobb

SPRINGFIELD — Catherine M. Cobb, 96, died Sept. 4, 2002, at Cedar Hill Health Care Center in Windsor following a long illness.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
