Virginia R. Adriance

MANCHESTER — Virginia Rita Adriance, 74, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born July 21, 1928, in Manchester, the daughter of Ralph and Edna (Demars) Fleming.

She graduated from Burr & Burton Seminary in 1946.

She worked for Kmart and the Sheraton hotel chain for many years in the Albany/Schenectady, N.Y., area.

She enjoyed crafts, ceramics, knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include a sister, Katherine Sendra of Wells; two brothers, Richard Fleming of Dorset and Thomas Fleming of Bethany, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three sisters, Edith Hanlon, Elizabeth Nichols and Genevieve Fleming; and by three brothers, Ralph Fleming, Donald Fleming and Reid Fleming.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester with the Rev. Justin Baker, pastor of the Conversion of Saint Paul’s Church in Manchester, officiating. Burial will follow in Dellwood cemetery in Manchester Village.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center, in care of Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, 05255.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.

Katharine Payne Moseley

GRAFTON — Katharine Payne Moseley of Grafton, Vermont died peacefully in Bay Front Hospital on September 29, 2002, in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her zest for life, intrepid spirit and deep affection for friends and family remained with her to the end.

The daughter of Thomas Jones and Grace Goldsborough Payne, Katharine was born on May 28, 1906, in Kansas City, Missouri. She grew up in Evanston, Illinois, attending the Roycemore School where she studied art. In 1927 she married George Van Horn Moseley Jr., her husband of 31 years, and began a life of travel and adventure as an Army wife. They bought the Wadleigh farm in Grafton in 1933, and were stationed in China in 1934-38 and Japan in 1953-54, where Kay developed both her painting and her lifelong interest in gardening and Asian art. During all these years her real home was always her farmhouse in Grafton, where her talents for decorating, painting, cooking and gardening, gradually assumed legendary proportions. Her paintings of Spain, China, Japan, Mexico and Vermont were often shown at the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Chester Art Guild.

Kay left two surviving children, Henry Goldsborough Moseley of Grafton, Vermont and Katharine Moseley of Washington, D.C. Her second son, George Van Horn Moseley III, died in an accident in Maryland in 1975. Katharine will be remembered in the years to come for her passionate love of life and the arts, travel and good company. None who have tasted it will forget her marvelous cooking, hospitality and lively conversation, nor her appreciation for all the beauty that life can offer. She continued to enjoy a full life until her last few weeks.

She will be fondly remembered by her many friends, her children, her seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. Katharine will be put to rest in Cobb cemetery, Grafton, Vermont at 10 a.m., October the 14. A reception will be held at Katharine’s home following the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make gifts to National and Vermont Public Radio.

Charlotte S. Abel

TOWNSHEND — Charlotte Smith Abel, 80, died Sept. 27, 2002, at her home.

She was born March 26, 1922, in West Haven, Conn., the daughter of Dr. George and Abbie (Adams) Smith.

She spent her early years in West Haven and Crowell, Nova Scotia, graduating from West Haven High School and the Rhode Island School of Design.

She married Robert Abel on July 1, 1950.

Mrs. Abel worked with her husband for the Fresh Air Fund for many years, American Red Cross, United Way and Winter Carnival. In 1968 she and her husband started the Bald Mountain Campground, which they operated until their retirement in 1991.

She was active in the Cub Scouts, American Red Cross blood drive, Townshend School Club and School Board.

Survivors include her brother, Dr. Bryce Smith of Orland, Maine; children and stepchildren, Abigail Abel of Townshend, Jonathan Abel of East Dover, Martha Sirjane of Shrewsbury, Robert Abel of Redding, Conn., Lauramarie Reichow of York, Pa., and Gretchen Perschino of Danbury, Conn.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; four nephews; and her caregiver, Karla Hickin of Townshend.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1995; a brother, Dr. Allen Smith; and a sister, Miriam Smith.

There will be no funeral service. A private burial will take place at the Abel Family cemetery in Townshend.

Friends are invited to come to her home on Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brattleboro Christmas Stocking or the Windham County Humane Society.

George C. Rose Jr.

BARRE — George C. Rose Jr., 76, died Sept. 27, 2002, at Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre.

He was born in Bennington, the son of George and Lena (Lillibridge) Rose Sr.

He was educated in the Bennington schools.

Mr. Rose worked at the Bennington Brush Co. for several years.

Survivors include two nephews, Randall Rose of Albany, N.Y., and Bryant Vallie of Ballston Spa, N.Y.

He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Vallie.

The graveside service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in Park Lawn cemetery in Bennington with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Estelle Lowrey

FARMINGTON, Conn. — Estelle Lowrey, 94, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Village Gate of Farmington.

She was born Dec. 22, 1907, in Bristol, the daughter of Albert and Cherrie (Ward) Wilson.

She graduated from Wheaton College in Massachusetts, and studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio.

She married Dr. Frank M. Jerman of Nebraska. He died in 1977. She later married Judge Wilbur Lowrey in 1985. He died in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Albert Jerman of Arlington, Vt.; a daughter, Marjorie Bratcher of Burlington; a granddaughter and grandson.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Charity Jerman.

Mrs. Lowrey was a volunteer with the Bristol Hospital Auxiliary, the Girls Club, DAR, community concerts, Euterpe & Beta Reading Clubs and the Bristol Garden Club. She was the founder of the Bristol Music Club, and a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church in Bristol.

She enjoyed music, needlework, reading, transcribing Braille and traveling.

A private burial was held in West cemetery in Bristol. The memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Bristol.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Book Remembrance Fund of the First Congregational Church of Bristol, 31 Maple St., Bristol, 06010, or the Bristol Family Center for Boys and Girls, 47 Upson St., Briston, 06010.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Funk Funeral Home in Bristol.

Robert Wayne Giard

BRIDPORT — Robert Wayne Giard, 79, passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 2, 2002, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Bridport on January 24, 1923, the son of Victor and Marguerite (Nadeau) Giard. Robert was a lifelong resident of Bridport. He graduated from Middlebury High School in 1942 and served with the United States Army. On October 25, 1952, he married Hila Huestis. He was a lifelong dairy farmer until his retirement in 1977. He afterwards worked for Monument Farms Dairy in Weybridge for 20 years until his health forced him to retire. Outside of his farming Robert enjoyed hunting and he loved mowing his lawn and watching TV.

Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Hila Giard of Bridport; one son, Wayne and his wife Kelly Giard of Brandon; one daughter, Lori-Anne Kimball of Williston; six grandchildren, Heather Marvel and her husband Randy of Louisville, Ky., Shawn Dufresne and his companion Shannon Jameson of Bridport, Fred Dufresne and his companion Jean Bull of Addison, Jason and Joel Kimball of Williston, Stephanie Giard of Brandon; three great-grandchildren, Megan Bougor of Middlebury, Orion Ladd of Louisville, Ky., and Hunter Barrows of Bridport; two aunts, Vivian Jackson and Violet Nadeau of Bridport. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by a daughter, Susan Dufresne in 1998; and three brothers, Walter, Wallace and Arthur Giard.

The Funeral Service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury. Graveside committal services and burial will follow in Bridport Central cemetery. A reception will follow in the Bridport Church Vestry. Calling Hours will be held on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Home, Middlebury.

Victoria Upjohn Gauntlett Buffum

SHELBURNE — Victoria Upjohn Gauntlett Buffum died October 1, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care after a long illness.

She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on July 27, 1944, the daughter of Jack C. Gauntlett and Barbara (DeLano) Gauntlett.

She attended the Leelanau School in Leelanau, Michigan and Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. In 1965 she married John Buffum and they lived briefly in Germany and returned to make their permanent home in Vermont. Together they won twenty-five professional rally car race championships. She retired from car racing to be a full-time mother to her daughter, Courtney. Later she, as a small business owner, purchased the Cheese Outlet, which she helped to transform into Burlington’s Fresh Market.

Over the years, Victoria was an active community member and served as a Board member and on several committees of Trinity College of Vermont, the Flynn Theater, the Vermont Folklife Center and the Shelburne Museum. In addition to her generous philanthropic support, was her passion for the mission of the organizations she chose to serve. The life long influence of her grandmother, Dorothy Dalton was Vicki’s inspiration behind her commitment to the community and helping individuals in need.

Victoria is survived by her daughter, Courtney Elizabeth Buffum, the love and light of her life for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Gauntlett Maloney. She is survived by her brothers, Roger Gauntlett of St. Joseph, Michigan, Thomas Gauntlett of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and her sisters, Eleanor Gauntlett Wicks of Westport, Massachusetts and Suwanna Gauntlett of Berkeley, California; her aunt, Suzanne DeLano Parish; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Flynn, the Shelburne Museum, or the Vermont Folklife Center. There will be a private graveside service. On Monday, October 7, 2002, from 5 to 7 p.m. there will be a celebration of her life at the Brick House at Southern Acres of Shelburne Farms. Patrick P. Cram Rites

SHOREHAM — The funeral service for Patrick Parker Cram, 69, who died Sept. 29, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill cemetery.

Organist was Bonnie Miller Johnson.

American Legion Post 55 of Brandon provided military honors. Chaplain Reed presented the flag to Mr. Cram’s son, Doug.

Pallbearers were Gary Stone, Bernie Cram, Douglas Cram Jr., Pat Cram, Mahlon McCoy and Lennie Cram Jr.

The family received friends at the home of Ed and Sherry Cram in Salisbury for a time of fellowship and reflection following the committal service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Timothy A. Ryan

Timothy A. Ryan, 49, of Rutland, died Oct. 1, 2002, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Mass., after a brief illness.

He was born March 25, 1953, in Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., the son of Edward and Patricia (Lori-ot) Ryan.

He graduated from Beth Page High School in Beth Page, N.Y.

He married Susan Yarsinske on June 7, 1975, in Long Island, N.Y.

He worked as a quality assurance laboratory technician at OMYA.

He was a member of Christ the King Church, Italian Aid Society and Rutland Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed golfing and photography.

Survivors include his wife of Rutland; two daughters, Dori Ryan and Arielle Ryan, both of Rutland; a brother, Edward Ryan of Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y.; three sisters, Patricia Schuerlein of Beth Page, Roseanne Manke and Rose-mary Ryan, both of Hicksville, Long Island, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Community Cancer Center, in care of Rutland Regional Medical Center, Allen Street, Rutland, or the Leukemia Foundation.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Caroline Elizabeth Tedford) Chevalier

Caroline Elizabeth (Tedford) Chevalier, 88, died October 2, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a short illness. She was born in Saratoga Springs, New York on August 5, 1914, to Henry and Ida (Dague) Tedford.

Before moving to Vermont in 2000, she resided in Flor-ida and Mas-sachusetts.

Most recently she was a resident at Mountain View Center in Rutland, Vermont.

Caroline worked at various careers during her long life. She found her niche in working as a nurse’s aide in both Massa-chu-setts and Ver-mont. When she retired, Car-oline en-joyed traveling the East Coast. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially celebrations, and rides in the countryside. Her hobbies included cooking, reading, crocheting, playing bingo and watching the Lawrence Welk show. She loved being surrounded by photographs of her loved ones. She will be dearly remembered by those who cared for her.

Caroline was predeceased in March 1998 by her husband, Wilfred J. Chevalier Jr., and a daughter, Arlene Dorothy Stroup in June 1998. She is survived by three sons, Robert Charles, Bedford, Va., Wilfred Joseph III, Roanoke, Va., and Ray Tedford, Shrewsbury, Mass.; and five daughters, Joan Elizabeth Cleveland and Carolee Durkee, both of Athol, Mass., Winifred Evelyn Chevalier-Walker, Brandon, Vt., Linder Powell, Brooksville, Fla., and C-Anne Chevalier of N. Miami Beach, Fla. She is also survived by thirty grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours. A graveside prayer service and burial will take place on Saturday, October 5, at 10 a.m. at Tully cemetery in Massachusetts.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to RAVNA & Hospice, 7 Albert Cree Dr., Rutland, Vt., 05701, the activity fund at Mountain View Center, 9 Haywood Ave., Rutland, Vt., 05701, or to a favorite charity. u
