Timothy A. Ryan Rites

The funeral Mass for Timothy A. Ryan, 49, of Rutland, who died Oct. 1, 2002, was celebrated Monday at Christ the King Church, with the Rev. Reid Mayo, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery.

Organist was Sister Pauline Gratton and vocalist was Cynthia Wierzbicki.

Bearers were Tom Yarsinske, Carl Yarsinske, Richard Walker, Hugh Spafford, John Schuerlein and Dustin Blanchard.

A prayer service was held Sunday afternoon at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland by the Rev. Mayo.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Thomas W. Harrison Rites

MENDON — The funeral Mass for Thomas W. “Scratch” Harrison, 46, who died Oct. 3, 2002, was celebrated Monday at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Proctor with the Rev. William Morgan, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Dominic’s Catholic cemetery in Proctor.

Organist was Margaret Curtis and soloist was Mary Jo Knapp.

Bearers were Edward Garrow, Patrick Conway, Albert Clarino, Ernest Goodrich, John Rizk and David Fitzgerald.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

E. Bethany Parquette

YARMOUTH, Maine — E. Bethany Parquette, 77, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at her home in Yarmouth.

She was born in Flint, Mich., on Aug. 6, 1925, the daughter of Russell H. and Georgia (Gabel) Schram.

She attended schools in Beloit, Wis., and graduated from Dowagiac (Mich.) Union High School and Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac.

She married Lewis Parquette in 1943 in South Bend, Ind. He died in 1981.

Mrs. Parquette worked as a secretary in Michigan and Maine. She and her husband ran a small dairy operation early on in their marriage and maintained an 80-acre farm until his death. She volunteered for the Salvation Army, Lee Memorial Hospital, Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center and Freeport Nursing Home.

She enjoyed gardening and traveling.

Mrs. Parquette lived most of her life near Dowagiac and also in Wallingford, Vt. She moved to Maine in 2000.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Nimtz of Wallingford and Sarah Wiley of Yarmouth; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, Leah Myrkle, and her son, Jon Travis.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Freeport on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. A graveside service and interment of ashes will be held Oct. 27 at the Keeler cemetery near Dowagiac, in conjunction with the North Wayne Mennonite Church in Dowagiac.

Contributions may be made to a local hospice society or the First Baptist Church of Freeport.

Ada C. Miller

RANDOLPH — Ada Cass Miller, 71, formerly of New Sewickley Township, Pa., died Oct. 5, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington after a brief illness.

She was born May 9, 1931, in Sewickley, Pa., the daughter of Earle and Beulah (Ball) Cass.

She graduated from New Castle (Pa.) High School in 1949 and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1954 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

She worked in the nursing field for many years, retiring in 1985.

Mrs. Miller was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph, Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of the Eastern Star and the Mayflower Society.

Survivors include her husband, Irvin Miller Jr. of Randolph; a daughter, Deborah Mischke of Defiance, Mo.; four sons, Irvin Miller III of Seagoville, Texas, William Miller of Aledo, Texas, Robert Miller of Hebron, Conn., and David Miller of Aliquippa, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.

The graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in Sylvania Hills cemetery and Memorial Park in Rochester, Pa. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Bethany United Church of Christ in Randolph.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 485, Williston, 05495, or the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05446.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Abner H. Kodess

WOODSTOCK — Abner H. Kodess died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at home surrounded by family and friends.

He was born March 8, 1914, in New York City to Samuel and Dora (Mandelstam) Kodess. After graduating from Cornell University in 1935 with a landscape architecture degree, he helped design the original rock garden at the Bronx Botanical Gardens. On June 21, 1938, he was married to Elizabeth Browne. He served in the Armed Forces from 1943 to 1946.

In 1947, Abby and Betty moved to Woodstock, Vt. He worked for the Soil Conservation Service as a Soil Scientist, mapping many acres throughout Vermont. Retiring in 1967, he spent the rest of his life pursuing his interests in photography, music, art and literature, and was an original member of Pentangle.

He will be remembered for his enthusiasm and wonder for life and belief in being a friend and support to all.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty; a brother, Steven Kodess and sister-in-law, May of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.; a niece and a nephew, five grandnieces; and his extended family, Polly, Brad, Emily and a beloved corgi, Joy Luck.

Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Norman Williams Public Library in Woodstock, Vt. A celebration of Abby’s life will follow at a later date.

Clifford C. Knisley

CHESTER — Clifford C. Knisley, 87, died Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.

William C. Lovell

SPRINGFIELD — William Charles Lovell, 81, died Oct. 6, 2002, after a long illness.

He was born June 16, 1921, the son of Guy and Annie Lovell.

He attended night school and earned his master carpenter’s certificate.

He worked for E.R. Wiggins for many years, and later for B.K. Barlow helping to build and repair many of the houses and other structures in Springfield and surrounding communities.

Mr. Lovell was a U.S. Army veteran serving during World War II. He volunteered for the paratroops, serving with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Division and seeing action in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Belgium.

He was known as “Grampa Bill” by the neighborhood children, and was always there to give a helping hand.

Survivors include his wife, Rosamond; a brother, Carl; three daughters, Ruth Corliss, Bonnie Harrington and Bea Merrill; three sons, Peter, Bob and Bill Jr.; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield.

There will be no calling hours.

Robert G. Cota

SPRINGFIELD — Robert G. Cota, 67, died Oct. 5, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 9, 1934, in Springfield, the son of Gordon and Emily (Craigue) Cota.

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1953.

He married Kathleen Lucius on April 6, 1957, in Springfield.

Mr. Cota worked at Idlenot Dairy as a truck driver for more than 40 years, and continued to work for the H.P. Hood Co. after it bought out Idlenot for several years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife of Springfield; a daughter, Barbara Cota of Warren; two sons, Gary Cota and Donald Cota, both of Springfield; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nancy Durand of Lebanon, N.H., and Mary Ellen Walker of North Carolina; a brother, Edgar Cota of North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

A family graveside service will be held Friday morning in Oakland cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Parks and Recreation Department, in care of Andy Bladyka, 139 Main St., Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Edward H. Rushford

SPRINGFIELD — Edward H. Rushford, 75, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Springfield Hospital after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Montgomery, the son of Moses and Josephine (Lumbra) Rushford.

He attended schools in Montgomery.

He married Freda Campbell on June 17, 1950, in Westminster.

Mr. Rushford worked at the Hill Top Farm in Simonsville for more than 25 years, and later for Wiggins Concrete Products in North Springfield as a truck driver for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and picking apples and blackberries.

Survivors include his wife of Gill Home in Ludlow; three daughters, Peggy Packer, Tammy Ferris and Rosalie Rushford, all of Springfield; a son, Kim Rushford of Chester; five grandchildren and one great-grandson; three brothers, Earl Rushford of Weathersfield, Carl Rushford of Johnson and Lawrence Rushford of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.

The graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Simonsville cemetery in Andover with the Rev. John Martens of Andover, officiating.

Calling hours will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Humane Society, P.O. Box 398, Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Andrew J. Soule Jr.

CHARLESTOWN, N.H. — Andrew Jackson Soule Jr., 82, died Oct. 6, 2002, at Springfield (Vt.) Hospital.

He was born May 17, 1920, in Sheldon, Vt., the son of Andrew and Teresa (Riley) Soule.

He graduated from Enosburg Falls High School and attended Norwich University, both in Vermont, and received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Vermont.

He married Virginia Hamel on June 14, 1952. She died in April 2002.

Mr. Soule had a long career as an English teacher, starting at Vergennes (Vt.) High School, then at Stevens High School in Claremont, Columbia High School in South Orange, N.J., Topsfield High School in Topsfield, Mass., Educational Services Inc. in Watertown, Mass., Danvers Junior and Senior High Schools in Danvers, Mass., Ayer Junior and Senior High Schools in Ayer, Mass., and Springfield Junior and Senior High Schools in Springfield, Vt., from 1966 until his retirement in 1983. After his retirement he worked at Mortenson Real Estate Agency in Charlestown.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army-Air Force.

He was a member of the Vermont Retired Teachers Association.

Survivors include three brothers, Horace Soule of Sheldon, Vt., twin brother, Arthur Soule of Montgomery Center, Vt., and Max Soule of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; a sister, Harriet Armstrong of St. Albans, Vt.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Ruth Benoit and Laura Crane.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Charlestown Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 369, Charleston, 03603.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Stringer Funeral Home and Crematorium in Claremont.
