Helen S. Byrne

CASTLETON - Helen Sheldon Byrne, 82, died Oct. 27, 2002, at Mountain View Center Genesis ElderCare in Rutland after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 17, 1920, in West Rutland, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Ranney) Sheldon.

She was a member of the first class to graduate from Poultney High School in 1937.

She married Howard Byrne on Aug. 3, 1946. He died in 1961.

Mrs. Byrne was involved with the operation of her family farm for many years. She worked as a school bus driver for Kipphutt's Transportation from 1961 to 1981. She owned and operated Byrne's Home Decorating Service until her retirement in 1997.

She was a member of the Hydeville Baptist Church, Hydeville Workers group of the church, and the Dorcas Society of the United Baptist Church in Poultney. She was a member of the Poultney Valley Grange 533 for more than 50 years, Lake Champlain Pomona Grange, an associate member of the Center Grange of Hubbardton, the Vermont Grange and the National Grange. She was also a member of the Young at Heart Club of Poultney. She was a volunteer at the weekly bingo games at the Poultney Valley Grange.

Survivors include a sister, Shirley Kovaleski of Hoosick, N.Y.; a brother, George Sheldon of Bomoseen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Hughes in 2002; and two brothers, Leslie Sheldon and Edwin Sheldon, who both died in 1995.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Stephen R. Payne, pastor of the United Baptist Church of Poultney, officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.

Calling hours will be held today from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hydeville Baptist Church, through the office of the funeral home, P.O. Box 86, Fair Haven, 05743.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Frank Parisi Rites

The funeral Mass for Frank Parisi, 50, of Rutland, who died Oct. 23, 2002, was celebrated Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with the Rev. Richard Tinney officiating. Burial followed in St. Peter's cemetery in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Organist was Richard Brown and vocalist was Lori Routhier.

Bearers were Fran Southern, Joe McCarty, Joe McCarty Jr., Patrick McCarty, Roger Thorne, Bob Gratton, Mark Parisi and Jim Del Vecchio. Honorary bearers were members of the Vermont Funeral Directors Association, New York Funeral Directors Association and the Adirondack Funeral Directors Association.

A Christian prayer service was held Sunday afternoon at the Aldous Funeral Home by the Rev. Tinney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 257 South Union St., Burlington, 05401, or the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen St., Framingham, Mass., 01701-4688, or the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Memorial Processing Center, P.O. Box 31160, Hartford, Conn., 06150-1160.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Mary L. Corey Rites

WEST RUTLAND - The funeral Mass for Mary L. Corey, 81, who died Oct. 25, 2002, was celebrated Monday at St. Bridget's Church in West Rutland with the Rev. Robert Whalen, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Bridget's cemetery.

Organist was Angela Lundrigan and vocalist was Theresa Bartlett.

American Legion Post 87 of West Rutland provided military honors. Wally Pratt made the flag presentation.

Bearers were grandchildren, Devin Corey, Jared Williams, Alex Krone, Ryan Corey, Keil Corey and Lauren Williams. Honorary bearers were members of the Catholic Daughters of America.

A prayer service was held at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland by the Rev. Raymond D. Walsh.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Robert C. Wisell Sr. Rites

BRANDON - The funeral service for Robert C. Wisell Sr., 84, who died Oct. 24, 2002, was held Monday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Congregation Church in Brandon, officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham.

The family received friends at the home of his daughter Sarah McKeighan in Leicester following the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

William R. Driscoll

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - William R. Driscoll, 80, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Enfield, N.H., the son of William and Annie (Follansbee) Driscoll.

He worked as a farmer and carpenter.

He enjoyed woodworking and tinkering on electronic equipment.

Survivors include two nephews, Wendell Adams of White River Junction and Wayne Adams of Enfield, N.H.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet cemetery in White River Junction.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Mildred C. Ryan

BENNINGTON - Mildred C. Ryan, 92, died Oct. 26, 2002, at the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Hospital.

She was born in Bennington June 29, 1920, the daughter of Michael Joseph and Genevieve (Ward) Cronin. She was a graduate of Bennington High School.

She married Bernard F. Ryan April 30, 1946, in Bennington. He died in 1970.

Before her marriage, she worked for 17 years at the former County National Bank in Bennington.

For the past 18 months, Mrs. Ryan had been living with her daughter in Glens Falls.

She was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church and also of Court St. Andrew, Catholic Daughters of America. She had also been a member of the Altar Rosary Society of the church and the Bennington Senior Citizens Club and AARP.

She enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Hubinger; two grandsons; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews, grandnephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur F. Cronin Sr. and Thomas H. Cronin, and a sister, Elizabeth Horst.

The funeral will begin at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will take place in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. The wake service will be held Tuesday afternoon.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Vermont Chapter of the American Heart Association or the Vermont Diabetes Association, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Lamonte Moloney

TYSON - The memorial service for Lamonte "Monty" Moloney, 98, who died Oct. 2, 2002, will be held at the Tyson Congregational Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Jane Buswell officiating.

Arlene I. Mahoney Rites

SPRINGFIELD - The funeral Mass for Arlene I. Mahoney, 95, who died Oct. 24, 2002, was celebrated Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiating.

Organist was Jay Chandler and cantor was Harry Smith.

Bearers were Daniel Mahoney, George Papagelis, Dan Amidon, Paul Amidon and Philip Magnuszewski.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Bernard V. Giard

BRIDPORT - Bernard V. Giard, 77, died Oct. 25, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

He was born in Bridport on May 2, 1925, the son of Victor and Marguerite (Nadeau) Giard and was a lifelong resident of Bridport.

He served in the National Guard and in World War II.

He married Doris E. Moulton on Aug. 3, 1963.

He was a farmer in Bridport for many years before his retirement in 1987.

He was a selectman for the town of Bridport, served on the Board of Civil Authority, and was on the Tri-Town Water Board.

He was a member of the Masons.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Sandra Garthaffner of Orwell, Marilynn Giard of Burlington, Janice Flowers of Savannah, N.Y., Sally Billings of Leicester, and Judy Giard of Bridport; two sons, Richard Giard of Fairfield and Allen Giard of Richmond; a sister, Kathryn Myrick; a brother, Russell Giard; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two aunts.

He was predeceased by four brothers, Walter, Wallace, Robert and Arthur Giard.

He enjoyed playing games and giving tractor rides.

A memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. at the family's residence on Route 22A in Bridport. The Rev. Tim Franklin, pastor of the Bridport Congregational Church, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Town Line First Response or the Bridport Fire Department.

The Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury is in charge of arrangements.

Patrick J. Coyle

FERRISBURGH - Patrick Joseph Coyle, 84, died Oct. 28, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 10, 1917, in Lacolle, Quebec, Canada, the son of Michael and Alma (Gates) Coyle.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, Holy Name Society of Vergennes, Knights of Columbus 4th degree of Burlington, Our Family Fellowship of Vergennes, Catholic Family Fellowship of Burlington, and the Catholic Golden Age of Burlington. He was a prison volunteer.

Survivors include his wife Agnes (Bonnie) Coyle; 17 children, Annette Baronoski of North Carolina, Jeanne Bean of Texas, Harold Coyle, James Coyle, Adele Coyle, Joseph Coyle and Mary Coyle, all of Ferrisburgh, Kathleen Provoncha and Louise St. Jacques, both of New York, Caroline Bitler of Panton, Therese Flanders of Cambridge, Dr. Gael Coyle of England, Judith Hart, Sherry Coyle and John Coyle, all of Monkton, Dolores Coyle-Quirk of Connecticut and Sue Kjaer of Massachusetts; 25 grandchildren; two sisters, Adrienne Paduchak of New Hampshire and Mary Shover of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Little) Coyle; a son, Theodore Coyle; a daughter, Patricia Coyle; a grandson and a granddaughter; and a sister, Agnes Cousineau.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. Burial will follow in St. Peter's cemetery in Vergennes.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Vergennes, 05491, or Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, Vergennes, 05491.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Lyrace Flower Fontaine

BRISTOL/BURLINGTON - Lyrace Flower Fontaine, 85, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at her home in Bristol.

She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Hartland, Vermont, daughter of J. Howard and Diamond (Rose) Flower.

She graduated from Windsor High School in 1934, salutatorian of her class. In 1938 she received her A.B. degree from the University of Vermont. She later obtained her M.A. degree from Middlebury College. In 1956 she was a Fulbright Scholar to France - the Sorbonne and Nice.

In 1941 Edmour J. Fontaine and she were married in St. Joseph Church in Burlington.

Following her graduation from U.V.M., she began a 48-year teaching career in Vermont. During her first five years, she taught French, English and Latin at Beeman Academy in New Haven. She then taught 14 years at Proctor High School, followed by 29 years at Burlington High School, where she taught French and English.

In 1971 Lyrace became chairman of the Foreign Language Department at B.H.S. She originated and directed the Total Immersion French Program and an exchange with Bergerac and Perigord, France. She was one of the pioneers in teaching Francophone culture and literature.

She taught two Summer School courses at U.V.M. and was on a faculty for workshops for ACTFL in Atlanta and Boston.

In addition to teaching, Lyrace directed plays; sponsored French and Latin clubs; with her husband, Eddie, chaperoned class trips to New York City and Washington, D.C., many AFS Short Term exchange trips to high schools in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maryland and D.C.; and one exchange trip to Paris and Bergerac, France.

Lyrace had a great interest in theater, directing and acting in high school and community plays. She was a member and officer of the Proctor Players Club, where she played, among other roles, Calpurnia in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and the title character in Madwoman of Chaillot.

She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors: Fulbright Scholarship, U.V.M. Outstanding Alumna Award (1974), Vermont Teacher of the Year and runner-up to the National Teacher of the Year (1968), decorated by the French Government with Palmes Academique-Chevalier and Palmes Academique-Officer, chosen by two governors as member then chairman of Vermont French Cultural Commission. She was also a former or present member of Vermont Foreign Language Teachers Association, American Association for Teachers of French, Burlington Education Association, Vermont Education Association, National Education Association, Catholic Daughters of America, Societe des Deux Mondes, Federation Feminine Franco-Americaine, Comite de Vie Franco-Americaine, Chittenden County Retired Teachers, Vermont Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, Burlington AFS Adult Chapter, area representative for AFS, Class Agent for UVM Alumni.

Lyrace is survived by four sisters, Zelva Ladeau and husband Clayton of Bristol, Iloene Brennan of Bristol, Gracile Lord and husband Arthur of Ripton, Ildolyn Ahearn and husband Robert of Hopkinton, Massachusetts; sister-in-law, Yvette Gervais, brother-in-law, Gerard and wife Theresa Fontaine; and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and two great-grandnieces. She was predeceased by her husband; her three brothers, Thalen, Launise and Norlan; and her sister, Mavis.

She loved life and was always devoted to her family, taking much pleasure in get-togethers, especially when the younger children were present. She will be greatly missed by all.

Her friends, colleagues and students also held a special place in her heart throughout the years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Burlington. Interment will be in New Mount Calvary cemetery in Burlington. Friends may call at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 71 S. Union St., Burlington, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. The family requests that any gifts in Lyrace's memory be given to AFS Program, Burlington High School, 52 Institute Road, 05401. Brown McClay Funeral Home in Bristol is in charge of arrangements.
