BRIAN M. GARDNER, SR.

HIGHGATE CENTER - Brian M. Gardner, Sr., age 36, died Sunday afternoon, Dec. 2, 2001, doing what he loved most: deer hunting in Alburg.

He was born in Fitchburg, Mass., Dec. 23, 1964, son of Howard, Sr., and Anita (Dubie) Gardner. He was employed as a painter all of his working life. He was a member of the Church of the Rock, The Abenaki Self Help Association, Inc., National Rifle Association, and B.A.S.S.

He married Lisa Ryder on July 30, 1994. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by his children Brian, Jr., and Jenessa Gardner, both in Highgate Center; his mother- and father-in-law Clifford and Sandy Ryder of Williston; a brother, Howard Gardner, Jr., of Georgia; eight sisters, Linda Gardner of Carson City, Nev., Carolyn and her husband Bruce Taylor of Richford, Diane and her husband Robert Carpenter of Sacramento Calif., Donna Gardner of Winchendon, Mass., Robin Smith of Santa Rosa, Calif., Janice and her husband Danny of Fitchburg, Mass., Dorine and her husband Gary Beagle of Georgia, Sherry Gardner, of Georgia; special uncles and aunts Joseph and Mabel Gardner, Sonny and Marie Gardner; several other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Wayne Gardner, Sr.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m., Dec. 9, 2001, in the Church of the Rock, Route 104, St. Albans. Memorials may be made to a trust for his children, in care of Vermont Federal Credit Union, 163 North Main Street, St. Albans, Vt., 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady and Levesque Funeral Home.

RICHARD HARMON MACOMBER

ST. ALBANS - Richard Harmon "Mac" Macomber, of Snowcrest Road, died Saturday morning, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Holiday House in St. Albans, following a short illness with family members at his side.

Richard was born on Feb. 14, 1926 in Cavendish, Vt., the son of William Henry and Agnes Veronica O'Brien Macomber. He was educated in primary schools in Pomfret and Westford. He attended high school at Bellows Free Academy, Fairfax and graduated from St. Mary's in St. Albans with the class of 1943.

Mac joined the Vermont State Guard the day he was 16 and the U.S. Naval Air Corps the day he was 17. He later transferred to the Regular Navy. He became a radio operator and volunteered for (SACO) South American Cooperative Organization. SACO had weather stations, intelligence teams, observers, scouts and raiders. He served in Bengal, Bangladesh, India and China.

After peace was declared following World War II, his mission was accepting Japanese surrenders and returning these troops to Japan. He later was assigned duty bringing medicine and supplies to remote mountainous regions, resupplying hospitals to their prewar status for U.S. missionaries that were to later return. The return trip involved bringing back surviving U.S. soldiers to the coast, the first stop on their trip.

Following his discharge in 1950, Mac attended the universities of Connecticut, Montana, and Virginia. His degrees were in Wildlife Technology and Planning Management. He also earned a reserve commission in the Army.

He later worked as a ranger for Glacier National Park for a year. Seven years were spent serving the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with four of these years as field supervisor in Georgia. He later returned to Vermont in 1958 and worked for five years as an account executive for WCAX-TV. He was involved in private business as a planning consultant, primarily for the State of Vermont and the electric cooperatives in Vermont

In 1966, Mac joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers stationed in Boston and Washington, D.C., serving as an environmental planner, later becoming environmental chief for the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors (BERH). He became chief scientist at the Corps' Environmental Testing Laboratory at Chincoteaque, Va., training for his final duty assignment as chief of staff of the Army Corps of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors. During this time, Mac achieved the ranks of GM-15 C/S (M) and was C.O.E. of the BERH.

He is survived by his family of nieces and nephews, Carmaletta Holcomb and her husband Jay of Cedar Rapids, Iowa., Dave Parizo and his partner Jane Redmond of Mesquite, Texas, Ron Parizo and his wife Deb of Colchester, Lori James and her husband Terry of Burlington, William Parizo and his partner Nancy Lord of Fairfax, Helen Parizo of Colchester and Rhonda Root and her husband Randy of Swanton; as well as several great nieces and nephews. He also leaves a special friend, Pauline Macomber, of Germantown, Va.

He was predeceased by his sister Sally Macomber Adams in September of 1987.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's Catholic Church in Fairfax. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery in Westford.

Mac's family would like to take this opportunity to thank the kind staff at Holiday House in St. Albans for their compassionate care extended to Mac while he was with them. A special thank you to the fine residents of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont for their warm, generous and caring nature that made Mac feel at home while spending summers in their kingdom. This was truly his home.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that one continually support all the good efforts in the world. In particular, if one wishes, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Dept. 103, South Main Street, Waterbury, Vt. 05671-0501.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

DOROTHY ELAINE (HASELTON) MacARTHUR

ESSEX JUNCTION - Dorothy Elaine (Haselton) MacArthur, 82, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston from complications following a fall and broken hip she suffered on Oct. 21 of this year.

Dorothy was born in Bakersfield on July 13, 1919, the daughter of Morton and Sadie (Jones) Haselton. She attended Brigham Academy in Bakersfield and married Stewart Alexander MacArthur of St. Albans in Bakersfield in 1937.

She moved from the St. Albans to the Burlington area in 1981.

She worked for Sealtest Ice Cream from the mid 40s to early 50s. She owned Airport Grocery in South Burlington from 1954 to 1959, and the Checkerberry Restaurant and Cabins in Milton from 1962 to 1968. She moved to Walden, Vt., in 1968, where she served as secretary-treasurer of the Cole 's Pond Sledders and worked at the Hardwick Motel. She moved to the Westbury Park in Colchester in l981, to central Florida in 1984, and to Whitcomb Woods in Essex Junction in 1999.

Dorothy is survived by her son Everette MacArthur and his wife, Sandy, of Naples, Fla., and Everette's children, Dana, and his wife Vicky MacArthur of Burlington, Thomas MacArthur and his wife Sandi of Colchester, Marie Baker and her husband Mark Woglom of Gilford, N.H., and Sandy's daughter Tanya Guare of Belvidere. She is also survived by her daughter Marilyn Chates and her husband George of South Hero and Cocoa, Fla., and Marilyn's children, Michele von Turkovich and her husband Ed of South Burlington, Diana Smith and her husband Larry of Grand Isle, William Currier and his wife Lorraine of Winooski; and by George's children Paula Aube and her husband Jamie of Manchester, N.H., and Lauri Frenette and her husband Norm of Colchester; by her great grandchildren Danielle Mokritski, Ana, Gabriela and Michaela von Turkovich, Alex and Zachary Smith, Eric and Miles MacArthur, Christina Baker, Heather Aube, Travis Frenette; and her siblings Mary Young and her husband Clarence of Lower Waterford, Arthur Haselton of Williston, Ida Gravelle of Jericho, and by many nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by very special friends Yvette MacArthur and Mary Holmes.

She was predeceased by her husband Stewart A. MacArthur, her parents Morton and Sadie Haselton, granddaughter Cynthia Mokritski, grandson Ray S. (Checker) White III; her siblings H. Lee Haselton, Helen Cherrier, Florence Martin, Latham Haselton, Gertrude Johnson Griggs, Donald Haselton, and Bernard Haselton.

Dorothy's courage, work ethic, cooking skills and generosity

will never be forgotten by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Community Lutheran Church, on Williston Road in South Burlington, with the Pastor Jefrey Jenison officiating. Burial will be private in the Colchester Village Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

DOREEN BOWER

TEMPLE, Texas - Doreen Bower, age 36, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, surrounded by her loving family after a very short but courageous battle with brain cancer.
She was the daughter of Donald and Donna O'Connell Bower. Donna was formerly of East Fairfield, Vt. in addition to her parents, Doreen leaves her children, Amanda, Jessica, Trey, and Levi; her sisters Debbie, Diane, and Demetra and their husbands; several nieces and nephews; maternal grandmother Grace O'Connell of Fairfield; and several aunts and uncles. A sister, Dawn Lea, predeceased her.
Doreen's suffering is over and with her organ donations someone else's life will begin. May God bless her family.

CARL L. MUMLEY

ALBURG -- Carl Lincoln Mumley, 83, a lifelong Alburg resident died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 29, 2002, in the Roncalli Health Center in St. Albans Town.

Carl was born in Alburg, Feb. 14, 1918, the son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Carpentier) Mumley. He attended schools in Alburg, and on Dec. 4, 1945, married the former Glennis Searles who survives him.

For most of his working life Carl had been associated as a Trainman with the D & H Railroad, and will always be remembered as an avid gardener and golfer. He faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and was a fifty-year member of the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post #60 and a lifelong parishioner of Saint Amadeus Roman Catholic Church both in Alburg.

In addition to his wife Glennis of Alburg, Carl leaves a son, John of Burlington; and a daughter, Rebecca and her partner, Stan Saraous and Carl's grandson, David all of Lihue, Hawaii. He is also survived by a brother Calvin Mumley and his wife Lorraine of Alburg; and six sisters, Maude Mitchell of Alburg, Viola "Sis" Hall of Conn., Beulah Lewis of Alburg, Elvah McCarney of N. Y., Garnet Tarantino of Colchester and Patricia St. John and her husband Paul of Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Carl was predeceased by a brother, Clarence; and a sister Doris Letourneau. Carl's family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the administration and staff of the former Verdelle Village Extended Care Facility along with the present administration and staff of the Ronacalli Health Center for all the love, support and excellent care given to Carl throughout the past eight years.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. from Saint Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Alburg Village. Carl's brother-in-law, Father Wendell Searles, Vicar General for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in Saint Amadeus Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, today, Thursday, Jan. 31, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Gifts in Carl's memory may be made to Alburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 223, Alburg, Vt. 05440 or to the Alburg Library Association, Main Street, Alburg, Vt. 05440.

RICHARD FAY "DICKIE" GIROUX

ALBURG -- Richard Fay "Dickie" Giroux, 45, died unexpectedly on Tuesday Jan. 29, 2002, at his home. He was born in Meriden, Connecticut on March 14, 1956, the son of Richard A. and Ramona (Austin) Giroux. Prior to moving to Alburg he resided on Maquam Shore in Swanton.

Richard was an auto body technician and mechanic at Charbonneau's in Swanton. He enjoyed boating, ice fishing, water skiing, and working on older cars. He especially enjoyed being with family.

Besides his parents Richard and Ramona Giroux of Swanton, he is survived by his wife Victoria L. (Derry) Giroux; two sons Robert Giroux of St. Albans and Richard F. "Ritchie" Giroux, Jr. of Sheldon; two daughters Christa L. Sanborn and her husband John of Swanton, and Karen Giroux of Sheldon; four grandchildren Alex and Jessica Giroux, Ashley Bates and Michael Sanborn; two brothers and their wives Ralph and Kathy Giroux of Richford, and Russell and Jane Giroux of Athol, Mass.; two sisters Rae and her husband Scott Brown of Orange, Mass., and Renee Aube and Scott Garrow of Alburg; his mother-in-law Eleanor Knapp; father-in-law, Ernest Derry of Ore.; sisters-in-law, Sandra Derry of Ore., and Susan Rank of Calif.; a brother-in-law, James Derry of Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loving aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 12 Noon in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral. Spring interment will be in the family lot at Sheldon Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made for Richard F. Giroux, Jr.'s education, c/o Renee Aube, 107 Greenwoods Road, Alburg, VT 05440. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home.

JERRY DULUDE

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Jerry Dulude, age 74, our special friend, husband, father and grandfather, left us to be with God on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002. Because of this we will have a huge void in our lives, but are enriched by the wonderful memories we have of his sense of humor, his love and care for all of us and all the great times we had.

He was born in Coopersville, N.Y. on July 4, 1927, the son of the late Joseph and Yvonne (Jalbert) Dulude.

Jerry began his career at his brother-in-law, Gabe Larose's Garage in 1948, and then moved to Brattleboro and worked for Roberts Cheverolet returning to Enosburg Falls in 1960 when he opened Duludes Body Shop, retiring in 2000. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a former member of the Enosburgh Fire Department. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #42 of Enosburg.

Jerry enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was an avid Red Sox fan and Jeff Gordon racing fan. He also raced stock cars in the early 1950's in Enosburg. Jerry and Jinny were married April 21, 1951.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jinny (Lumbra) Dulude of Enosburg. Three special children, Monica and her husband David Garrow of Enosburg Falls, Kevin Dulude of Enosburg Falls and Tim Dulude and his wife, Kerry of Berkshire; the highlight of his life, his six grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Kristi Cutting and her husband Jeremy, Kylene and Kelli Garrow, Ryan, Moira and Travis Dulude; two sisters, Cecile Larose of Enosburg Falls and Theresa Raymond and her husband Wilfred "Bill" of Derry, N.H.; three brothers and their wives, Joseph and Kathryn Dulude of Enosburg Falls, Clement and Annette Dulude, and Marcel and Alma Dulude all of East Hartford, Conn.; a brother-in-law, Robert Johnston of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Andrew Dulude; and a sister, Jeanine Johnston.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

ROBERT L. WILLIAMS

ST. ALBANS - Robert L. Williams, 71, a resident of St. Albans since 1960, passed away Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Center in White River Junction. He was born in Hattiesburg, Miss. Jan. 3, 1931, the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Ingram) Williams. He served his country in the United States Army.

Robert is survived by his wife, Anetta (Osborne) Williams; a daughter, Margaret Williams; and a sister, Lillie McMahon, all of St. Albans; and four nieces. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted in the spring at St. Albans Bay Cemetery, when cemetery conditions allow. An announcement will be made at that time. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
