Donald E. White Rites

SPRINGFIELD - The funeral service for Donald E. White, 73, who died Oct. 22, 2002, was held Sunday at Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. Earl Adams of Barre officiated. Burial followed in the Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Bearers were Mr. White's great-nephews, Nathan White, Josh Thibeault, Ray Thibeault and Matt Thibeault.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Shirley B. Torrey

ADDISON - Shirley Brown Torrey, 83, died Oct. 27, 2002, at her home.

She was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Middlebury, the daughter of Clyde and Blanche (Coursey) Brown.

She graduated from Middlebury High School and Castleton Normal School.

She married Merton Torrey on Jan. 22, 1944.

Mrs. Torrey was a teacher in Addison, Ferrisburgh and Charlotte for many years.

Survivors include her husband of Addison; a son, Steven Torrey; two granddaughters; a brother, Clifton Browne; and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Community Baptist Church in Addison. Burial will follow in Grandview cemetery in Addison.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Addison Community Baptist Church, 183 King Hill Road, Addison, 05491.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

Edmond E. Atkins

BURLINGTON - Edmond Eldon Atkins, 69, died Oct. 26, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was born Jan. 15, 1933, in Ferrisburgh, the son of John and Mildred (DeCoursey) Atkins.

He worked on the family farm in Ferrisburgh until 1998.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1955 to 1957 in Germany.

Survivors include his wife, Gisele Latreille; a daughter, Ardenia; two stepdaughters, Suzele Smith and Deborah Whitney; a son, Eldon Atkins; three granddaughters and a grandson; three brothers, Hubert Atkins, Rollin Atkins and Arland Atkins; three nieces and one nephew.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Burial will be in Gage cemetery in Ferrisburgh.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Leonard R. Cunningham

VERGENNES - Leonard Robert Cunningham, 69, a longtime resident of Vergennes, died Oct. 26, 2002.

He was born in Addison Nov. 28, 1932, the son of Eldred Cunningham and Lila (LaRose) Cunningham Delorme.

He married Clara Chamberlain on Aug. 23, 1958.

He served with the U.S. Army 17th Regiment in the Korean War. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard and Army Reserves for 21 years, retiring as sergeant first class. After 37 years at Simmonds Precision-Hercules-Goodrich Corp., he retired in 1993.

He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Vergennes, where he served as an usher for more than 40 years.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Michelle Savageau of Rutland, Catherine Cunningham of Proctor, and Lisa Supanich of Lusby, Md.; a son, Leonard Cunningham of North Hero; three sisters, Lucille Nelson of Connecticut, Beverly Peck of Middlebury and Kimberley Laughner of New Hampshire; two brothers, Richard Cunningham of Charlotte and David Cunningham of Massachusetts; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Eldred Cunningham; a sister, Rosaline Casey; and his stepfather, Lawrence Delorme.

The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Vergennes. Burial will be in St. Peter's cemetery in Vergennes.

Friends may call at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vergennes Area Rescue squad or the Vergennes United Methodist Church, Vergennes, 05491.

Gary R. Hall Sr.

GRANVILLE, N.Y. - Gary R. Hall Sr., 57, died Oct. 27, 2002, at his home after a two-year battle with cancer.

He was born April 12, 1945, in Granville, the son of Willard and Alta (Ware) Hall.

He retired in 2002 after more than 20 years with the town of Granville Highway Department.

Mr. Hall was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed hunting, farming, gathering sap for syrup and raising honey bees.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Martha (Lyman) Hall; a son, Gary Hall Jr. of Hartford; a daughter, Amy Mack of North Granville; three grandchildren; a sister, Darlene Kretzer of North Granville; three brothers, Milton Hall of Salem, Wendall Hall of Truthville and Philip Hall of North Granville; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville. Burial will follow in Truthville cemetery.

Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 415 Lower Main St., Hudson Falls, 12839.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home.

Ellsworth A. Fjeld

KINGSTON, Mass. - Ellsworth Armand "Lee" Fjeld, 72, died Oct. 7, 2002, in Plymouth after a brief illness.

He was born June 5, 1930, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Christian and Sigrid (Anderson) Fjeld.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Fjeld of Kingston; four sons, Peter of Leicester, Vt., George and Karl, both of Brandon, Vt., and Gustaf.

A family memorial is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army.

Peter J. DePoy

Peter J. DePoy, 44, of Rutland died Oct. 29, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Connie Omland

Carolyn Burke Omland (Connie) died October 29, 2002, at home after an extended illness. She was born February 28, 1930, in Rutland, Vermont, the daughter of John and Gladys Murphy Burke. She graduated from Christ the King School, Mount Saint Joseph Academy (Class of 1948), and Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. Her career was in banking; she worked at the Rutland County National Bank from 1949-1963, and at the Marble Bank/Albank from 1985-1997.

Connie married Erling O. Omland, October 15, 1955, at Christ the King Church, and together they built their home in Rutland Town. She loved Vermont, she was proud to be a native Rutlander, and every day she was grateful for her view of East Mountain. Connie was devoted to helping others, whether she was looking out for her own family, or taking care of elderly customers at the bank. She loved bringing cookies to sick friends and older people, and was so grateful that so many did the same for her in her final months.

She was a lifetime member of Christ the King Parish where she served on the Liturgy Committee, Discussion Clubs, and with her husband Erling was president of Christ the King School Parents Club. She was also a member of the Christ the King Sodality. She served on the MSJ Parents and Friends Club Executive Board, and was a member of the MSJ Alumni Association. Connie was an active member of Vermont Cursillo and was secretary of the Cursillo Secretariat. She and Erling also served on the Vermont Ecumenical Council. She served two terms as a member of the UVM advisory board, the Vermont Council.

Connie was an Honorary Member of the Pico Ski Club, served as Secretary, was active in the teaching and racing programs, and was a member of the Vermont Alpine Racing Association. Connie won the female division of the Pico Derby top-to-bottom ski race once in the late 1940s — she proudly told the story, then added at the end that she was the only female entrant that year.

Survivors include her husband, Erling of Rutland Town; son, Kevin and his wife Sonja Scheffer of Maryland; daughter, Mari and her partner Laura Olsen of Washington, D.C.; and son, Kristian of Bolton. She is also survived by three brothers, Jack and Beverly Burke of South Carolina, Douglas and Janice Burke of Florida and Maine, and Barry and Marguerite Burke of New Jersey, as well as three cousins, Mary Margaret Burke of Rutland, Marilyn Shangraw of Maryland and George Abigail of Texas; nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

Contributions may be made to the Sisters of Saint Joseph Retirement Fund, Mount Saint Joseph Development Fund (Convent Avenue, Rutland), Pico Ski Education Foundation (P.O. Box 66740, Rutland), the Community Cancer Center of Rutland Regional Medical Center or Hospice.

Funeral services will be held at Christ the King Church in Rutland at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 2. Calling hours will be at the Clifford Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 1.

Warren L. Cole

MOUNT HOLLY — Warren Lloyd Cole, 62, died at his home with his family and faithful dog Dusty by his side on October 28, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Tyson on November 5, 1939, the son of Lloyd and Impi (Enola) Cole.

Mr. Cole was a 1958 graduate of Black River High School. He spent his early years working on the family farm, and on July 22, 1967, married Charleen Priest, daughter of Roy and Lucile Priest of Mt. Holly.

He served in the Ludlow chapter of the National Guard. He had been employed by Fellows Gear Shaper of Springfield and Ludlow General Electric for a short period prior to his career in Forest Management and establishing and operation of the Martin and Cole Logging Business.

Mr. Cole was a very devoted and respected political figure for the town, elected as selectman in 1975, being chosen citizen of the year in 1987 by the Mt. Holly Grange. He was a member of the Mt. Holly Volunteer Fire Department, and awarded honorary lifetime status in 1990.

Being an avid sportsman, he excelled in basketball and fast pitch softball. He also enjoyed bowling and was a lifelong hunter.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Charleen of 35 years; two daughters, Tina McAndrews, Darica (Cole) Pierce, both of Mt. Holly; his mother, Impi Cole of Mt. Holly; five brothers, Victor Cole of Virginia, John Cole, Gary Cole and Rodney Cole of Mt. Holly and Norman Cole of Middletown Springs; three sisters, Stephanie Smith, Valerie Perrino, both of Mt. Holly and Carol Fahey of Norwich; two granddaughters, Kristen and Dana McAndrews; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father, Lloyd Warren Cole in 1974.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rutland-Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North Main St., Rutland.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life, Friday at 2 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall at Star Lake, in Belmont.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mt. Holly Rescue Squad, in care of Carol Wooley, P.O. Box 102, Mt. Holly, 05758.

Mary A. Price

TINMOUTH — Mary A. Price, 79, died Oct. 28, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 8, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of William and Adeline (Farrell) Williams.

She graduated from Manuel Training High School in Brooklyn.

She married William Price Sr. on Dec. 1, 1945, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mrs. Price worked for New York Telephone Co. as an operator and supervisor for several years, as an office manager for a doctor’s office, and at Rutland Regional Medical Center in the admitting department in the emergency room for a short time.

She enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include her husband, William Price Sr. of Tinmouth; a son, William Price Jr. of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Rene Wirth of Portland, Maine; a brother, Joseph Williams of Long Island, N.Y.; and a granddaughter.

She was predeceased by a sister, Dolores Liggett; and two brothers, Gerald Williams and William Williams.

The graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Danby-Scottsville cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society Inc., P.O. Box 558, Pittsford, 05763.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford-Aldous Funeral Home.
