Virginia M. Sweeney

A celebration of life for Virginia Mae Sweeney, 74, who died Nov. 14, 2002, will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Brandon.

A reception for family and friends will be held at the Brandon Inn following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 19 Conant Square, Brandon, 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Bernard F. Fortier Rites

The funeral service for Bernard Francis Fortier, 81, of Rutland, who died Nov. 22, 2002, was held Monday at the Aldous Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas V. Mattison, assistant pastor of Christ the King Church, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery.

American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. James Burke presented the flag to the family.

Bearers were Eddy Davis Jr., James Oney, Bernard Fortier Jr., Richard Champine Sr., Carlton Kingsley and Edward Davis Sr.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 31, 13 Washington St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Margaret Kelly

WOODSTOCK — Margaret “Peggy” Kelly, 70, died Nov. 22, 2002, at the Mertens House in Woodstock.

She was born July 23, 1932, in Woodstock.

She graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1950, as salutatorian of her class. She attended the University of Vermont.

She enjoyed art.

Survivors include three brothers, Byron Kelly Sr. of Woodstock, Robert Kelly of Shelburne and William Kelly of Quechee and Falmouth, Mass.; many nieces and nephews; a nephew, Byron Kelly Jr., and his wife Joanne of Woodstock, who cared for her for many years.

She was predeceased by a sister, Mary Woods.

The memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Woodstock Historical Society, 26 Elm St., Woodstock, 05091.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Richard H. Cook

WOODSTOCK — Richard H. Cook, 74, died Nov. 25, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

He was born Aug. 17, 1928, in Hanover, N.H., the son of Clement and Dorothy (Hart) Cook.

He graduated from Vermont Academy in Saxtons River in 1947, the University of Vermont with a bachelor’s degree in 1952, and Columbia University’s School of International Affairs in New York, with a certificate of the Russian Institute and a master of international affairs degree.

Mr. Cook worked for Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C., from 1954 to 1961, and in 1962 joined the staff of Radio Free Europe in Munich, Germany, where he was director of RFE’s research department and deputy director. In 1976, Radio Free Europe was combined with Radio Liberty in Munich, Germany, and Mr. Cook was policy director for two years and later director of Radio Liberty’s 14 non-Russian language stations from the New York office. He retired in 1983 and returned to Woodstock.

Survivors include four cousins, Mrs. Chester Barrett of Ocklawaha, Fla., William Marlowe of Beaverton, Ore., Carl Pletsch of Oxford, Ohio, and Peter Pletsch of Provo, Utah.

There will be no funeral service. Burial will take place in Riverside cemetery at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Francis E. Hoisington

QUECHEE — Francis E. Hoisington, 83, died Nov. 25, 2002, at his home.

He was born March 27, 1919, in Springfield, the son of Frank and Lillian (Avery) Hoisington.

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1937.

He worked at A&P Tea Company in Springfield for three years, farmed for a brief time in Rochester, and then returned to Springfield where he worked at Bryant Grinder. He later owned and operated the Union Street Grocery for a time before going to work at Great Eastern. In 1972 he moved to White River Junction, where he worked for the State of Vermont Department of Social Welfare, retiring in 1984.

Mr. Hoisington was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the European Theatre Alpenine Campaign.

He was a member of the Quechee Congregational Church.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Iola (Rawson) Hoisington of Quechee; a daughter, Dawn Cullen of Holbrook, Mass.; a stepson, Lawrence Fuller of Okinawa, Japan; two stepdaughters, Margaret Neily of Windsor and Chynthia Saade of Hesparia, Calif.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Calvin Hoisington of Suncook, N.H.; two sisters, Muriel Berg and Rachael Jensen, both of Perkinsville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Francis Hoisington Jr., in 1978.

Friends may call Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Handicapped, 37 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, 05401-4390.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Francis E. Hoisington

SHAFTSBURY — Mary Flora Coffman, 97, died Nov. 25, 2002, at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.

She was born July 21, 1905, in Swansea, Mass., the daughter of John and Mary (DeOliva) Maderios.

She was a member of the Shaftsbury Historical Society and the Shaftsbury Community Club.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Salin of Shaftsbury and Evelyn Thomas of Lilburn, Ga.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Olive Lane of East Hartford, Conn., Margaret Mello and Irene Turner, both of Rhode Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Hiram Coffman, in 1972.

A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will take place in Loudon Park cemetery in Baltimore, Md.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Arlington Rescue Squad, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Anita M. Welch

BENNINGTON — Anita Marie Welch, 76, died Nov. 22, 2002, at her home.

She was born July 18, 1926, in Troy, N.Y., the daughter of John and Margaret (Martin) Mitchell.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur Welch; three daughters, Eileen Kolar of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Cheryl Abrahamson and Lynn Parker of Florida; a son, Dan Parker; a stepdaughter, Arleen Scoggins of Oroville, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Area Home Health Agency or Bennington Hospice, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Bruce D. Cutler

BENNINGTON — Bruce D. Cutler, 65, died Nov. 25, 2002, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 3, 1937, in North Adams, Mass., the son of Raymond and Margaret (Norton) Cutler Sr..

He graduated from Drury High School in North Adams.

He married Bonnie Rhodes on Jan. 11, 1975, in Pownal.

Mr. Cutler worked at Nastech as a robotic welder, retiring three years ago. He was currently working part time at Hannaford Supermarket in Bennington.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was later transferred to the Reserves.

Survivors include two sons, Daniel Cutler of Deer Park, Texas and David Cutler of Dickinson, Texas; a daughter, Deborah Cutler of LaPorte, Texas; three brothers, Robert Cutler of Berlin, N.J., Raymond Cutler Jr. and Alton Cutler, both of North Adams, Mass.; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours. Burial will private at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Christian School or Second Chance Animal Shelter, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

John H. Ridgway

BRATTLEBORO — John H. Ridgway, 60, died Nov. 23, 2002, at his home.

He was born Dec. 22, 1941, in Philadelphia, Pa., the son of William and Edith (Shoemaker) Ridgway Jr.

He attended schools in Moorestown, N.J., graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree, and received a master’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He also attended the Rhode Island School of Design and Silvermine College of Art in New Canaan, Conn.

He married Shirley Fuller on June 1, 1968, in Brattleboro.

Mr. Ridgway was a self-employed carpenter and artist for the past five years, retiring due to illness. He had worked as an art teacher at the Austine School in Brattleboro for 17 years and at the Brattleboro Retreat as sheltered workshop supervisor for several years. He also worked as an art teacher in South Burlington Elementary School system for two years, and as an art instructor at the University of North Antofgasta, Chile, with the Peace Corps for 2 ½ years.

He was a member of the Brattleboro Outing Club, served on the Youth Services Diversion Board, and was a member of the Windham Art Gallery.

He enjoyed working on his home, playing tennis, and listening to music.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Benjamin of Randolph Center and Daniel of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, William Ridgway III of Medford, N.J., and Benjamin Ridgway of Raymond Wash.; a sister, Lucia LeConey of Mount Holly, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held at All Souls Church in West Brattleboro at a later date.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Vermont Public Radio, 20 Troy Avenue, Colchester, 05446, or Youth Services, P.O. Box 6008, Brattleboro, 05302.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Kleoniki Patterson

BRATTLEBORO — Kleoniki “Nikki” Patterson, 50, died Nov. 24, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Mass.

She was born Dec. 17, 1951, in Athens, Greece, the daughter of Aristides and Vasiliki (Douvros) Koutsiaras.

She attended school in Greece.

She and her family moved to the United States and eventually settled in Brattleboro in 1991.

She married Melvin Patterson on March 15, 1973, in New York, N.Y.

Mrs. Patterson was a member of St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church in Brattleboro and a former member of ALANA of Brattleboro.

She was an avid reader. She also enjoyed music, philosophy and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Melvin Patterson Jr. of Springfield, Mass.; two daughters, Vasiliki Patterson and Maria Patterson, both of Brattleboro; her father of Athens, Greece; a sister, Rula McDonald of Brattleboro; a brother, Ioannis Koutsiaras of Athens; six grandchildren; and many nieces nephews.

She was predeceased by her mother in 1992; and a granddaughter.

A Greek Orthodox prayer service was held Monday evening at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home with the Rev. Nicholas Zervakis, pastor of the new St. Nectarious Greek Orthodox Church of Brattleboro, officiating.

The Orthodox Mass will be celebrated at a later date at St. Nectarios Church. Burial will take place in Morningside cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 54 Brook St., Brattleboro, 05301, or the Brattleboro Drop-In Center, 60 South Main St., Brattleboro, 05301.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.
