Ernest H. McKirryher

Ernest H. McKirryher, 83, of Rutland Town, died Dec. 6, 2002, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born Nov. 21, 1919, in Hemingford, Canada, son of Herbert and Bessie (Kennedy) McKirryher.

He moved to Vermont in 1929, and his early education was in Sherburne. Mr. McKirryher graduated from Rutland High School in 1939, and attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph.

He married Lola Read on Nov. 19, 1939.

Mr. McKirryher was the Mendon road commissioner and town selectman in the 1940’s. He worked as a logger and farmer and owned and operated McKirryher Excavation in Rutland Town with his two sons and son-in-law.

He was a life member of the Rutland Moose Lodge #1122, the Cheney Hill Citizen’s, and the Mill Village Chapel Association. He was a director of the Rutland Agricultural Society, and past director of the New England Milking Shorthorn Society. Mr. McKirryher and his family have shown milking shorthorn cattle at several New England fairs for many years.

Survivors include his wife of Rutland Town; two sons, Ronald and his wife, Nancy of Rutland Town, and Richard and his wife, Kimberly of Rutland; three daughters, Ardith Fenton and her husband, Page, of Middletown Springs, Corleen Garland and her husband, Stephen, of Saco, Maine, and Sandra Griffin and her husband, Ralph, of Rutland; four sisters, Esther Horn, Ruth Wiggin, Myrtle McKirryher, all of Rutland, and Doris Premo of Messena, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by one brother, and three sisters.

Burial will be in Cheney Hill cemetery at the convenience of the family.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Mill Village Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Van Luven, pastor of the Assembly of God Roadside Chapel, officiating.

There will be no public calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mill Village Chapel, in care of William Thomas, 178 Oak Ridge Dr., Rutland, Vt., 05701, or the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, Vt., 05446.

Tossing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Joan E. Griffin

FOREST DALE — Joan Elizabeth Griffin, 75, died Dec. 5, 2002, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.

She was born May 31, 1927, in Hartford, Conn., the daughter of Alphonse and Margery (Newton) Fontaine.

She received her early education in Windsor, Conn., schools.

She married Howard Griffin on Sept. 8, 1951, in Windsor, Conn. He died in 1998.

Mrs. Griffin worked for Underwood Typewriter Corp., Veter Root and Hamilton Standard Corp. manufacturing aircraft parts. She later worked at General Electric in Rutland as a bencher for 11 years, retiring in 1991. She also assisted her husband on the family farm in Forest Dale.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Griffin of Forest Dale; a grandson and one great-grandson; three brothers, John Fontaine of Pomona, Calif., Robert Fontaine of Upland, Calif., and Rene Fontaine of Madera, Calif.; three sisters, Margaret Lindsey of Lebanon, Ore., Ann Larivee of Murrieta, Calif., and Ruth Digati of Hemet, Calif.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Margery Hartford in 1983.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Forest Dale with the Rev. Gordon Bardos, rector, officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Hill cemetery. A private burial will take place at a later date in Forest Dale cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Brandon Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 232, Brandon, 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Elsie D. Rogers

PAWLET — Elsie Dodge Rogers, 89, died Dec. 3, 2002, at the home of her son, Paul Dodge, in St. Louis, Mo.

She was born May 28, 1913, in Pittsford, the daughter of Charles and Mattie Dodge.

She graduated from high school in Brandon and Castleton Normal School in 1932. She later completed her four-year degree at Castleton State College.

She married Cecil Dodge in 1935, in Pawlet. He died in 1945.

She taught school in Tinmouth, Wells, Pawlet and Granville, N.Y.

Mrs. Rogers served on the boards of Pawlet Community Church and the Pawlet Library. She was a member of Pen Women, Eastern Star and Grange.

Survivors include a son, Paul Dodge; a daughter, Elizabeth Kwak; a stepson, George Rogers; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

She was predeceased by her second husband, Wilson Rogers in 1989.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at the Pawlet Community Church with the Rev. Nancy Townley officiating. Burial will follow in Mettowee Valley cemetery in Pawlet.

Friends may call Friday, Dec. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville, N.Y.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home.

Mark A. Brown

BENNINGTON — Mark Allen Brown, 51, died Dec. 6, 2002, at his home.

He was born Oct. 19, 1951.

He worked in construction throughout his life and was an experienced roofer.

Survivors include his close friend, Shelly Lantz, and his care provider, Denise Paquin, both of Bennington.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Samuel J. Knowles

BENNINGTON — Samuel J. Knowles, 76, of New Milford, Conn., died Dec. 6, 2002, in New Milford.

Mr. Knowles was predeceased by his wife, Agnes (Murphy) Knowles in 1997.

The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael A. Demasi officiating. Burial will follow in the New Catholic cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call Monday from 1:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.

Joan E. Tiffany

BRATTLEBORO — Joan E. Tiffany, 67, of Chester and Bridgewater, Mass., died Dec. 6, 2002, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Brattleboro.

Arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.

Bertrand G. Trudeau Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Bertrand G. “Bert” Trudeau, who died Dec. 3, 2002, was celebrated Friday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Robert W. Lozinski, pastor, and the Rev. Michael A. Demasi concelebrating. Burial followed in Oak Hill cemetery.

Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Monica Murray.

American Legion Post 13 provided military honors. Ralph Brown and Joseph Krawczyk presented the flag to Mr. Trudeau’s wife, Vicky. Maurice Rancourt sounded taps.

Bearers were Thomas Trudeau, Christian Trudeau, Mark Trudeau, Bart Trudeau, Michael Cristofolini, Richard Cristofolini and Eddie Merritt Jr.

A prayer service preceded the funeral Mass at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

The wake service was offered Thursday afternoon at the funeral home by the Rev. Lozinski. The Rev. Demasi, chaplain, led members of the Knights of Columbus in the recitation of the Rosary Thursday evening. Paul Caron offered a family prayer.

A remembrance gathering for friends and family followed the committal service at Sacred Heart St. Francis Parish Center.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Amah S. Guyette

BARTON — Amah Simons Guyette, 95, formerly of Bradford, died Dec. 5, 2002, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.

She was born April 9, 1907, in Corinth, the daughter of Selah Graves and Eva (Hatch) Simons.

She attended schools in South Corinth and Thetford.

She married Carl Guyette in 1947 in Newbury. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Guyette worked at Dwight Beebe Creamery as a lab technician for many years, Camp Hanoum on Thetford Hill and the Bradford Inn.

She was a former member of the Home Dem.

Survivors include a son, Lionel Fisher of Ferrisburg; nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours or funeral service. Burial will take place at a later date in West Bradford cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford.

Ashley B. Farley

LINCOLN — Ashley Brook Farley, 19, died Dec. 5, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born Feb. 24, 1983, in Middlebury, the daughter of Lyle Emmons and Christie Stark.

She was a member of the Addison County Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Jeremy Farley of Lincoln; her father of Lincoln and her mother, Christie Stark-Lafayette of Middlebury; three brothers, Jason Emmons of Monkton, Daniel Emmons and Trent Emmons, both of Middlebury; a half sister, Courtney Brown of Winooski; paternal grandmother, Marie Emmons of Lincoln; maternal grandparents, Ervin and Margot Stark of Monkton; paternal great-grandmother, Ida Masterson of Lincoln; maternal great-grandmother, Angeline Slade of Newfane; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother Jamie in 1993.

The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Burial will be in Maple cemetery in Lincoln.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Flemer

RIPTON — Elizabeth Hall Hutner Flemer, 47, died Nov. 30, 2002, in Princeton, N.J., with breast cancer.

She was born May 6, 1955, the daughter of Simeon and Frances Hutner.

She graduated magna cum laude from Yale University with a degree in English and classics. She received her doctorate from Princeton University, which will be awarded posthumously in January.

Mrs. Flemer taught English at the Darrow School in New Lebanon, N.Y., and Princeton Day School. She was also a published essayist and poet.

She was a singer and songwriter and performed locally with her husband, William Flemer IV, whom she married in 1993.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Will Flemer; two stepdaughters, Emma Flemer and Nell Flemer; her parents, of Ripton; three brothers, Daniel Hutner of Manchester, Nathaniel Hutner of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Simeon Hutner of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Louise Hutner of Princeton, N.J.; 10 nephews and two nieces.

She was predeceased by a son, Sam, in 1992.

The memorial service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at Princeton University Chapel.
