CLIFTON A. McCONNELL

CHARLTON, N.Y. -- Clifton A. McConnell, 86, passed away following a brief illness on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, N.Y.

Clifton was born on Nov. 16, 1915, in West Springfield, Mass. He was an area resident of Charlton for more than 70 years, coming from St. Albans.

He was a production control supervisor for the ALCO in Schenectady for 35 years. In 1969, Clifton went to GE as a machinist for 10 years and 10 months, and retiring on Jan. 1, 1981. He was a member of the Alplaus United Methodist Church in Alplaus, N.Y., where he sang in the choir for 25 years. Clifton was also a member of the ALCO 25-year Club. He was married to Mary "Esther" (Manzer) McConnell for 60 years.

Survivors include Clifton's son and daughter-in-law, David F. and Linda McConnell of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley J. and Frank Neander of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Patrick M. Neander of Charlton, N.Y., Laura J. Neander of New Paltz, N.Y., and Margaret May Neander of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services for Clifton will be announced in the future, with calling hours to be on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 2-4 p.m. at Bekkering-Ellis Funeral Home, Inc., 1 Mohawk Ave., Scotia, N.Y. Burial will take place in the Cremation Vale Cemetery Crematorium in Schenectady, N.Y.

Contributions in Clifton's memory may be made to Alplaus United Methodist Church, 1 Brookside Place, Alplaus, N.Y. 12008.

SAMUEL CONRAD MASDEN

ST. ALBANS - Samuel Conrad Masden, 53, also known professionally as Conrad Samuels, passed away late Tuesday night, Jan. 22, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born in Louisville, Ky. June 22, 1948, the son of the late James C. and Emogene (Abel) Masden.

Sam was a well known band leader and lead singer for Conrad Samuels Band. They played country music throughout the area and did many benefits for charities such as Special Olympics and entertained in various nursing homes and for seniors groups for the past 13 years. He was also employed as Assistant Manager in the ICPS Department of the INS in St. Albans. Many will remember him as an announcer for WLFE-FM radio in St. Albans.

On New Years Day in 1976, Sam married Carol Ann Bates in St. Albans. He was serving in the Air Force at the 764th AC&W Squadron. His military service was from 1967 to 1988 retiring as a Master Sergeant. He was a member of Robert E. Glidden Post 758, VFW and Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion. Sam drove school bus for St. Albans City and enjoyed bowling and fishing. In 1983 he was published in the American Poetry Anthology and last December he released a CD "Yellow Ribbons, Red, White and Blue".

In addition to his wife of 26 years, Carol, survivors include eight brothers and sisters and their spouses; Michael and Edna Ray of Shepardsville, Ky., Brenda and Clyde Patrick of Lawndale, Calif., Lois Neal of Louisville, Ky., John and Karen Masden of Shepardsville, Ky., Millie "Ruth" Watson of Indianapolis, Ind., Connie Lynn and Steve Ludwig of DeKalb, Ill., Earl "Tommy" Masden of Shepardsville, Ky. and Lowell "Glenn" Masden of Shepardsville, Ky. He also leaves two stepdaughters, Tammy White of Fairfield and her friends, Billie Davis and Paulette Tipper, and Tracy and Dan Renaud of Virginia and their children, Chelsea and Sean. Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law; Cliff and Ruth Bates and their son, Kris, Lillian Paternostro and her daughter, Nicole, Nancy and Roger Girard and children, Ken and Judy, Gary Bates and son, Brad, Rene and Stacy Bates and children, Kailey and Grace, and Joyce and Bob Harding and son, Joshua. He also leaves an uncle, James Abel of Bakersfield, Calif., an aunt, Lydia Clark of Louisville, Ky., a nephew, Sammy Jo Cranmer of Boston, Ky. and his best friend, Bobby Lamos of St. Albans. He was predeceased by his parents and a half-brother, Horace Ray.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's United Methodist Church in St. Albans. Interment will be this spring, with full military honors, in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Vermont Special Olympics, 368 Avenue D, Suite 30, Williston, Vt. 05495 or American Heart Association, 12 Hurricane Lane, P.O. Box 485, Williston, Vt. 05495. Visitation will be on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St Albans.

EVELYN (BRULEY) MONTGOMERY

ROCHESTER, N.Y./ST. ALBANS -- After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Evelyn passed into the hands of the Lord at the Genesee Region Home Care in Rochester, N.Y. on Jan. 19, 2002.

She was born in St. Albans on June 30, 1930, the daughter of Stephen and Ellen Bruley. On Aug. 10, 1946, she married Isadore (Glen) Montgomery in St. Albans.

In addition to her husband of 56 years, she is survived by her son, Douglas and his wife Sheila; two grandchildren, Stephen and Share; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Sarah all of Rochester, N.Y.; her mother and stepfather, Ellen and Clement Lestage of St. Albans; a brother David Bruley and his wife Phyllis of St. Albans; three sisters, Barbara Gaudette, Arlene and her husband Arthur Gaudette of Fairfax and Beverly Bean of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews.

A private internment will be held at the convenience of the family in Rochester, N.Y.

SHIRLEY M. CURTIS

SWANTON -- Shirley M. Curtis, 54, a lifelong resident of Swanton died late Monday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2002 at the Holiday House Nursing Facility in St. Albans.

Shirley was born in St. Albans, Jan. 28, 1947, the daughter of the late Robert and Mary (Greenia) Stearns. She attended Swanton schools.

Shirley worked in Housekeeping for the General Dynamics Corp.

Shirley leaves her son, Carl Curtis of Swanton and daughter, Laurie Phaneuf and her husband Steve of Champlain, N.Y. She also leaves two grandsons, Adam and Steve Phaneuf of Champlain, N.Y.

In keeping with Shirley's wishes, there will be no public calling hours or services and interment will be private. Gifts in Shirley's memory may be made to the Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton, Vt. 05488. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt.

KATHRYN L. COOK

RICHFORD -- Kathryn L. Cook, age 83, died Sunday morning, Jan. 20, 2002, at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

She was born June 27, 1918, in Berkshire, the daughter of the late Olin and Louvia (Bates) Young.

She was a resident of Richford for most of her life and was a chamber maid at The Crossing in Richford for 20 years, retiring in 1990. She married Marshall Cook June 19, 1941. He predeceased her Sept. 30, 1984. She is survived by several cousins; and dear friends, Suzanne and Ken Lavalla of Richford.

In keeping with Kathryn's wishes she will be cremated and there will be no funeral services. She will be buried next to her husband in the East Berkshire Congregational Cemetery.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Richford Ambulance Service, Main St., Richford, Vt. 05476.

Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls is in charge of arrangements.

ELEANOR M. BRESSETTE

EMMETT TOWNSHIP -- Eleanor M. Bressette, 85, of Emmett Township, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2002, at home where she has lived for 35 years.

Eleanor was born June 6, 1916 in East Highgate, Vt. to Joseph and Oglore (Duval) Lafar. She graduated in 1936 from St. Ann's Academy in Swanton, Vt. and in 1939 graduated from Johnson Normal College where she received her teaching degree, returning home where she taught in grades one through eight in a one room school house.

Eleanor married Delbert M. Bressette on June 21, 1947, in Swanton, Vt. moving to Battle Creek, Mich. in the 1960's. During the 1980's she taught for the Literacy Program, in the Battle Creek area, for people coming from other countries. Eleanor was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed sewing, hooking and braiding rugs and her pride and joy was her flower garden, where she was known in her neighborhood as the "Flower Lady."

Eleanor is survived by three sons, Merrill W. (Karen) Bressette of Colman, Mich., Allen D. (Bev) Bressette of Springport, Mich., and P. Wayne Bressette of Battle Creek; daughter, Jacquelyn Rupel of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two step-sons, Delbert M. Bressette, Jr. of Fullerton, Calif. and William A. Bressette of St. Albans, Vt.; and a sister, Florabel Duhamel of Alburg, Vt.

She was preceded in death by her husband; and three brothers, Robert, William and Wilson Lafar.

Visiting hours were at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home after 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13, where the family was present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, at the funeral home with Fr. Stephen J. Rodrigo officiating. Interment followed at Fort Custer National Cemetery.

The family requested that memorials be made to Hospice Care of Lifespan of Meals on Wheels in care of the Community Action Agency.

VERA G. LAROSE

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Vera G. Larose, age 92, died Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born July 20, 1909 in Sheldon, the daughter of the late W. Henry and Leona (Comstock) Garrow.

She was a resident of Enosburg Falls most of her life and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Ann Society. She was employed at Poissant Bros. IGA in Enosburg for 27 years and then at Grants Dept. Store and Woolworths Dept. Store in St. Albans for several years. She enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage and 500, and had played with the local card club for several years.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Norbert and Ruth Larose of Sheldon, and R. Charles and Bernadette Larose of Enosburg Falls; one daughter and her husband, Anne and Norman Bushey of St. Albans; 14 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Rosaire Larose; one son, Bernard Larose; one sister, Hilda Messier; three brothers, Harland, Henry and Gordon Garrow.

Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

ELIZABETH KING LORIMER

REGINA/ST. ALBANS -- Elizabeth King Lorimer died on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. Born in Chicopee, Mass. on Dec. 26, 1907, she received a BA from Smith College in 1929 and had two one-year stints as a mission leader in Labrador and Puerto Rico before marrying John McLaren of Glasgow, Scotland in 1935.

They lived for 32 years in St. Lambert, Que., where they raised six sons before retiring to Rice Hill, Vermont in 1967. During their retirement years, they traveled extensively throughout the world. In May, 2000, Betty suffered a paralyzing stroke and was brought to Regina in March, 2001.

Betty is predeceased by her husband in 1988 and her oldest son John Jr. (Ian) in 1958. Betty is survived by her sons Allen (Martha) of Coquitlam, B.C., Robert (Susan) of Regina, Thornton (Anna) of Mermaid Beach, Australia, Peter (Margaret) of Bracebridge, Ont., Douglas (Linda) of Sussex, N.B. Betty is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Special thanks to the caregivers of Helping Hands Personal Care Home in Regina, Dr. J.S. McMillan of Regina, and the caregivers of Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements in care of Speers Funeral Chapel and Crematorium Services, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.
