Arvid B. Carlson

MANCHESTER — Arvid Bruce Carlson, 61, a resident of Manchester and Hilton Head, S.C., died Jan. 24, 2003, while traveling to Mexico.

He was born June 11, 1941, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of Alvin and Evelyn (Duensing) Carlson.

He attended high school in Cicero, Ill., and was a student at Purdue University and graduated from the University of Chicago.

He was an accountant and auditor at Western Electric in Cicero, and then with AT&T in New York City and New Jersey. He retired to Manchester in 1990 and did bookkeeping part time for several businesses in the area.

Mr. Carlson was a member of the Chicago Jaycees and the Manchester Lions Club. He was currently serving as president of the Murray Hill Community and the South Associations. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village and the First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

He enjoyed the theater, and was a volunteer at the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Dorset Playhouse. He also participated in the “Walk for the Cure.” He enjoyed traveling, reading and movies.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Clune, whom he married in 1996; a daughter, Tammy Stanwood of Woodstock; a son, Jeff Carlson of Branchburg, N.J.; his former wife, Phyllis Carlson of Manchester Center; and four grandchildren.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manchester with the Rev. Jordan Dickinson and the Rev. Steven Barry officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Dellwood cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mark Skinner Library in Manchester or the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center Cardiac Rehabilitation Department, in care of the Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, 05255.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.

Gerald A. Graf

BENNINGTON — Gerald Alfred Graf, 71, a resident of Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, died Jan. 25, 2003.

He was born Feb. 18, 1931, in the Bronx, N.Y., the son of Peter and Jennie (Johnson) Graf.

He graduated from Vanderchilds High School in the Bronx.

Mr. Graf owned the Bull’s Head Inn in Campbell Hill, N.Y., for several years.

He was involved in the activities of the Friends of Hill Hold and Brick House Museum in Goshen, where he was a board member.

He enjoyed gardening, and maintaining the flower beds at the inn and the museum. He also enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include a brother, George Graf of Dorset; two nephews; and several cousins.

He was predeceased by a brother, Stephen Graf.

There will be no funeral service. A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Hill Hold and Brick House Museum, in care of the Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, 05255.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.

Jutta M. Vogel

WEST HALIFAX — Jutta M. Vogel, 69, died Jan. 27, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Brattleboro.

She was born March 24, 1933, and raised in Germany.

She and her husband immigrated to the United States in 1957.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Belfi of Oceanside, N.Y.; a son, Norman Vogel of Key West, Fla.; two sisters, Dagmar Shippert of Jacksonville and Hedwig Brosemer of Biloxi, Miss.; and a nephew.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Vogel, in 1991.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours. Burial will be private.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home in Wilmington.

T. Joyce Harrington

CLAREMONT, N.H. — T. Joyce Harrington, 71, died Jan. 27, 2003, at Integrated Health Services of New Hampshire at Claremont.

She was born Nov. 21, 1931, in East Wallingford, Vt., the daughter of Edgar and Thelma (Colby) Sharon.

She worked at King’s Department Store for several years.

Mrs. Harrington was a member of the Claremont Grange, the Sullivan County Pomona Grange, and member and former secretary of the Osborne Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church of Claremont.

She enjoyed babysitting.

Survivors include three brothers, Walter Sharon of Windham, Vt., Robert Sharon of Topeka, Kan., and Richard Sharon of Rutland, Vt.; a sister, Eathel Holden of Wallingford, Vt.; an aunt; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lyford Harrington, in 1973.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont with the Rev. Melville Andrade, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Maple Grove cemetery in East Wallingford.

Friends may call Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Osborne Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church, Claremont, 03743.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont.

William E. Faughnan Sr.

LAKELAND, Fla. — William E. Faughnan Sr., 74, formerly of White River Junction, Vt., and Hanover, N.H., died Jan. 27, 2003, at Sullivan County Nursing Home in Unity, N.H.

He was born Feb. 2, 1928, in Springfield, Mass., the son of Charles and Doris (Hunt) Faughnan.

He received his education in Springfield, Mass.

He married Opal Blake on July 4, 1949, in Bellows Falls.

Mr. Faughnan worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad for more that 40 years, retiring to Florida in 1998.

He was a licensed FCC advanced class radio operator and a former member of the Connecticut Valley FM Association in Claremont, N.H., and the American Radio Relay League in Kensington, Ky. He was a former member of the B&M Historical Society, the Massachusetts Bay Railroad Club and the Irish American Club in Charlestown, N.H.

Survivors include two sons, William Faughnan Jr. of Rensselaer, N.Y., and James Faughnan of Norwich, Vt.; four daughters, June Brunelle of Unity, N.H., Diane Faughnan of Lebanon, N.H., Doris Faughnan of Grafton, N.H., and Sherry Faughnan of Scarborough, Maine; two brothers, James Faughnan and Victor Faughnan, both of Santee, Calif.; a sister, Linda Hart of Lake City; a stepbrother, Ora Grant of Lakeland; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife in 1996.

The graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill cemetery in Bellows Falls, Vt.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Connecticut Valley Model Railroad Club, in care of John Rogers, Treasurer, 21 Summer St., Lebanon, N.H., 03766.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Peter K. Campbell Rites

BRATTLEBORO — The funeral Mass for Peter Kenneth “Ken” Campbell, 75, who died Jan. 19, 2003, was celebrated Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis McMahon of St. Michael’s Church officiating. Burial followed in St. Michael’s cemetery.

Organist was Constance Wallin and soloist was Regina Reffi.

American Legion Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Carl M. Dessaint Post 1034 provided military honors. Chaplain Robert Johnson presented the flag to Mrs. Campbell. Taps was sounded.

Pallbearers were Peter Campbell, Michael Campbell, David Lovelace, Thomas Lakin, Jason Stebbins and Jeffrey Vingeau. Honorary bearers were Timothy Callahan, James Kathan, Dana Lawrence, William Allen Stephen Wolfe, Patrick Cyr and James Pickus.

A prayer service was held Friday at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

A reception was held at the Elks Home following the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Gwen G. Gallup Rites

BRATTLEBORO — The funeral Mass for Gwen G. Gallup, 56, who died Jan. 21, 2003, was celebrated Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Fred McLachlan of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Putney officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery in Plainfield, Conn.

Organist was Constance Wallin and soloist was Regina Reffi.

A reception was held at the Putney Inn.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.

Dorothy Matot

SHOREHAM — Dorothy “Dot” Matot, 80, died Jan. 26, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born Oct. 25, 1922, in Ferrisburgh, the daughter of Henry and Mildred (Brittell) Danyow.

She graduated from Vergennes High School.

She married Reginald Matot Sr. on June 3, 1944. He died in 1987.

Mrs. Matot worked at Simmonds/BF Goodrich, retiring in 1987.

She enjoyed fishing, hunting and birdwatching.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Finke of Shoreham/West Addison and Cindy Thompson of New York City; a son, Reg Matot Jr. of North Bennington; three adopted daughters, Dalia Alvarez, Estella Armen and Kyle Pope, all of Massachusetts; two sisters, Pearl Yantz and Ruth Laflam, both of Vergennes; a brother, George Danyow of Massachusetts; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Sally Matot; two sisters, Laura Chadwick and Marion Lanoue; and twin brothers, Bernard Danyow and Burton Danyow.

Private services will be held in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Addison County Home Health/Hospice or the Shoreham First Response, Shoreham, 05770.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

William B. Mather

William B. Mather, M.D., a resident of Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre, Penna, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, after a lengthy illness.

Born Nov. 28, 1910, in China, he was the son of the late William and Grace (Borroughs) Mather. He attended schools in China and North Korea, Princeton University, Peking (now Beijing) Union Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital. He and his wife, the former Edith Reed, were married in 1934 and were appointed missionaries to China shortly before World War II.

Departing China in 1941 to escape the Japanese occupation of North China, Dr. Mather and his family moved to the Philippines where they were captured and interned by the Japanese. After their liberation by American forces in early 1945, he returned to Princeton, New Jersey, and joined the staff of McCosh Infirmary at Princeton University, where he remained until his retirement. His summers from 1947 until the early 1980s were spent as camp physician at Keewaydin Camps, Lake Dunmore, Vermont. He and his wife retired to Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania, in 1981.

Surviving are his wife, Edith, and daughter, Sally Renda of Kingston, Pa.; sons, William of Hopewell Jct., N.Y., and James of Mount Gretna, Pa.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Richard of St. Paul, Minn.

A memorial service will be conducted in Mt. Gretna, Pa.

Memorial donations may be made to the Keewaydin Foundation — Lake Dunmore Scholarship Fund, Salisbury, Vt., or to Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey.
