Mrs. Marguerite Daughn Murphy

FAIR HAVEN — Mrs. Marguerite Daughn Murphy, 100, a lifelong resident of Fair Haven, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 8, 2003, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, Vermont.

Marguerite was born on Sept. 16, 1902, in Middletown Springs, Vermont, the daughter of the late Francis B. and Mary F. (Kennedy) Daughn. Soon after her birth, her family moved to Fair Haven. Marguerite was a graduate of Fair Haven High School with the Class of 1921 and furthered her education at the Castleton Normal School, graduating with a teaching degree in 1925.

After graduation, her first teaching position was in the Middletown Springs schools and later in the Hampton, N.Y., school system. After a few years, she decided to change her employment and she took a position as a sales clerk with The Boston Store in downtown Fair Haven and eventually joined the staff at Donovan’s Pharmacy in 1960, where she was employed for about 10 years, until her retirement in 1970.

Mrs. Murphy was a communicant of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven, and upon her retirement she became very active with the Altar Society of her church under the direction of the former pastor, the Rev. Raymond G. Maloney. Marguerite was recognized during the 125th Alumni Association Celebration in July of 2002 as the oldest living graduate of Fair Haven High School.

She is survived by many cousins in the nearby area and also by her faithful caregivers and special friends, Marie Donovan, Gloria LaMontagne, Ruby Amerio and Joseph Minogue. Mrs. Murphy was predeceased by her husband, Mr. Henry F. Murphy, who died in 1965.

There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s cemetery in Fair Haven.

Memorial contributions in memory of Marguerite may be given to St. Mary’s cemetery Association through the office of the Durfee Funeral Home at P.O. Box 86, Fair Haven, VT 05743.

Donald C. Crandall

A funeral service for Donald C. Crandall, 61, who died Saturday in Rutland, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Clifford Funeral Home.

Friends may call at the Clifford Funeral Home Monday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Anita A. McCourt

Anita A. McCourt, 76, of Rutland died Feb. 7, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a brief illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., July 24, 1926, the daughter of Peter and Lucia (Ciccone) Gallo.

Mrs. McCourt lived in Philadelphia before moving to Vermont in 1992.

She worked at various hospitals in Philadelphia. She was a volunteer at, and member of, Bugbee Senior Center in White River Junction.

Survivors include a daughter, Lucia McCourt of Rutland Town; two sisters, Della De Tolla and Sue Biasanti of Philadelphia; three brothers, Louis Gallo, Victor Gallo and Blaise Gallo of Philadelphia; and a grandson.

She was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Fantozzi and Jenny Tumini; and by two brothers, Peter Gallo and Frank Gallo.

A funeral service will be held Thursday at St. Madeline’s Church in Ridgely Park, Philadelphia. Burial will follow in Holy Cross cemetery in Yeadon, Pa.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday at James Knoetgen Funeral Home in Morton, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, 05602.

The Clifford Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Michael D. Gola

WINDSOR — Michael D. Gola, 56, died Feb. 7, 2003, at his home in Windsor.

He was born Dec. 18, 1946, in Windsor, the son of John and Barbara (Reynolds) Gola.

He graduated from Windsor High School in 1964 and received a master’s degree from Northeastern University in 1975.

He worked at Draper Labs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., for many years and most recently at Laser Light Systems in Dedham, Mass.

He lived in Burlington, Mass., for many years before moving back to Windsor in 1997.

He was a member of the Billerica (Mass.) Elks Club 2071 for 15 years.

He coached his children’s basketball and baseball teams. He was an avid Windsor High School basketball and football fan, and enjoyed playing golf.

Survivors include his companion, Gail Dow of Windsor; two daughters, Angela Carnes of Burlington, Mass., and Sara Cronin of Wilmington, Mass.; a son, Christopher Gola of Braintree, Mass; a sister, Anne Marie Stephens of Burlington; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor. The Rev. Paul N. Belhumeur will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in St. Francis cemetery in Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Windsor High School Booster Club in care of Windsor High School, 19 Ascutney St., Windsor, 05089.

Clayton C. Carpenter III

ROYALTON — Clayton C. “Curt” Carpenter III, 43, died Feb. 7, 2003, in Royalton as a result of a logging accident.

He was born July 20, 1959, in Barre, the son of Clayton and Melissa (Hockman) Carpenter. He graduated from Randolph Union High School in 1977.

He married Donna Smith on June 3, 1978, in Brookfield.

He had worked as a mechanic, electrician and salesman before becoming a dairy farmer in 1990. He had owned and operated Lone Hickory Farm in Royalton with his wife since 1998.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in South Royalton, White River Masonic Lodge 90, F & AM in Bethel and the Ridge Climbers Snowmobile Club in Royalton.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and maple sugaring.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Maria Chandler, Amanda Carpenter, Carissa Carpenter and Elissa Carpenter, all of Royalton; his mother of Braintree; his father of Chelsea; his paternal grandmother, Rachel Ribi of Braintree; two brothers, Thomas Carpenter of St. Albans and Michael Carpenter of Vermont; a sister, Laura Howard of Hartford; and several nieces and a nephew.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Chapel on Dairy Hill in South Royalton with Bishop Robert McShinsky officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Ruth M. Kask

BELLOWS FALLS — Ruth M. Kask, 92, died Feb. 4, 2003, at McGuirr’s Nursing Home.

Donald R. Kendall

WOODSTOCK — Donald R. Kendall, 76, died Feb. 7, 2003, at his home in Woodstock.

He was born March 24, 1926, in South Woodstock, the son of Roderick Kendall and Florence (Lincoln) Kendall.

He graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 1943 and entered into the Naval Air Corps that same year. As an aviation cadet he studied at Middlebury College and other locations. He was discharged in November 1945.

Returning to Vermont, Mr. Kendall delivered milk for Henry Dupuis. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1949 with the first UVM degree in agricultural engineering.

He worked for Detroit Harvest, Bryant Chucking & Grinding Co. in Springfield, Hub Motor Sales in Courtland, N.Y., Minneapolis Moleen Co., John Deere Co. and Beatty Brothers. In 1972, Mr. Kendall started the Mecca-Kendall Co. in Buffalo, N.Y. and later moved it to West Falls, N.Y. His company dealt in John Deere industrial equipment.

In 1989, he and his wife retired to Orchard Park, N.Y, and in 1994 they moved to Woodstock.

He is survived by his wife of Woodstock; two sons, Donald Kendall Jr. of Houston, Texas, and Jeffery Kendall of Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Julie Oberstoetter of Sugarland, Texas; two stepdaughters, Katherine Kendall Donoghue of Georgetown, Mass., and Linda Kendall of Buffalo, N.Y.; a stepson, Roderick of Shortsville, N.Y.; a sister, Katherine Loraine Tarrant of St. Augustine, Fla.; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers, Wayne, Linward, Alan, and Frederick; and two sisters, Marjorie Day and Joyce Retzlaff.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the South Woodstock Community Church with the Rev. Mounir Sa’adah officiating. There will be no visiting hours. Burial will be in the Ransom-Kendall cemetery in South Woodstock at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Woodstock Visiting Nurses and Hospice, 32 Pleasant St., Woodstock, 05091, or the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, Upstate New York Chapter, 115 Hardwood Lane, Rochester, N.Y., 14616.

The Cabot Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bea A. Ericson

QUECHEE — Bea A. Ericson, 60, died Feb. 9, 2003, at her home in Quechee.

Arrangements are pending with the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Esther Heino

LUDLOW — Esther Heino, 88, died Feb. 8, 2003, at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow after a long illness.

She was born Feb. 15, 1914, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Sven and Hina (Bjorn) Heino. She attended the Hortonville School.

She was a longtime resident of the Mount Holly area. She was also a resident of Lake Worth, Fla.

She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Tuberculosis State Hospital, the Southeast Florida Tuberculosis Hospital and the A.G. Holley State Hospital, all in Florida, for many years. Mrs. Heino also worked as a hairdresser and did some child care.

She was an active member of the Finnish Society and the Rebekahs.

A graveside service is planned for Maple Grove cemetery in East Wallingford at a later date. All other arrangements are private.

Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow is in charge of the arrangements.

John D. Lyle

ACWORTH, N.H. — John David Lyle, 75, died at his home Feb. 8, 2003.

He was born Dec. 8, 1927, in Los Angeles, Calif., the son of John M. and Madeleine (Manley) Lyle.

He joined the Navy after high school and served during World War II.

He graduated from Cornell University.

Mr. Lyle was a writer for the Lafayette Advertiser, the New Orleans Times Picayune, the Scott Merideth Literary Agency, the Associated Press, and the New York Herald Tribune, and a freelance writer for Esquire Magazine.

In the 1970s he began working in the wood heat industry and became a distributor of Jotul and Lange woodstoves. He was also a consultant for Tulikivi of Finland and the president of Scandinavian Stoves Inc. During these years he wrote a book, “The Book of Masonry Stoves.”

He is survived by his wife, Audrey James; a son, Nicholas Lyle of Seattle, Wash.; and two daughters, Jessica Lyle of Seattle, Wash., and Katherine Lyle of New York City.

Final arrangements will be made at the convenience of the family.

Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd W. Stowell

SPRINGFIELD — Floyd W. Stowell, 90, died Feb. 6, 2003, at his home.

He was born July 26, 1912, in Windham, the son of Elias and Minnie Stowell.

He worked for Bryant Grinder in Springfield as a supervisor in the hydraulics assembly department.

Survivors include two sons, Melvin Stowell and Wayne Stowell of Chester; a daughter, Judith Edwards of Springfield; four sisters, Marion Parks of South Hadley, Mass., Alice Bliss of Chester, Margaret Trusty of Hamden, Conn., and Evelyn Earle of Melbourne, Fla.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Ellen (Bratton) Stowell; a son, Milton Stowell; and a daughter, Janet Merrill.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours at this time. A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Simonsville cemetery in Simonsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, 05602, to the Springfield Area Adult Day Service at 266 River St., Springfield, 05156, or the Visiting Nurses Association, 366 River St., Springfield, 05156.
