Dalbert W. Hescock

SPRINGFIELD — Dalbert Walter Hescock, 73, formerly of Londonderry, died April 6, 2003, at Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born May 11, 1929, the son of Walter and Bertha (Cobb) Hescock.

He worked at Coleman Lumber Mill, Bromley Mountain and Smith Inc.

Mr. Hescock enjoyed hunting and going out for rides.

Survivors include his twin brother, Darwin Hescock of West Townshend; a sister, Pauline Underwood of Wardsboro; two stepsons, Raymond Severance of Ludlow and Rollin Severance of Chester; two stepdaughters, Beverly Colburn of Ludlow and Barbara Cole of Chester; eight step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters; his companion, June Severance; and a step-grandson.

There will be no funeral service or calling hours.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Windham Fire Department or the Springfield Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Robert J. Manning

WEST ARLINGTON — Robert J. Manning, 81, died April 8, 2003, at Centers For Living and Rehabilitation.

He was born April 17, 1921, in New York City, the son of John and Jennie (Daly) Manning.

He attended George Washington High School in the Bronx, N.Y.

He married Gilberte Lavoie in 1945 in New York City.

Mr. Manning had an extensive career with the Prudential Insurance Co., retiring in 1978. He moved to Arlington in 1979 and worked at the Arlington Variety Store.

He was a communicant of St. Margaret Mary’s Church, a member of the Arlington Lions Club for more than 20 years, and a volunteer with the Arlington Chamber of Commerce and the Arlington Meals on Wheels. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Joseph Barry Council 2520 Knights of Columbus and a communicant of St. Ignatius Loyola Church while living in Hicksville, N.Y.

He enjoyed baseball, crossword puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, and was a lifelong New York Yankees fan.

Survivors include his wife of West Arlington; two daughters, Judith Baran of Saratoga, N.Y., and Geralyn Manning of Dorset; three grandsons; and cousins.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary’s Church with the Rev. George Dupuis officiating. A funeral service will precede the Mass at 9:30 a.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Columbans cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. The vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

All members of the Arlington Lions Club are asked to meet at the funeral home on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to pay their respects to the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Arlington Meals on Wheels Program, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, 05250.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

William F. Mason

BENNINGTON — William F. Mason, 79, died April 2, 2003, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Fall River, Mass., the son of Edward and Mary (Kenny) Mason.

He graduated from Naugatuck (Conn.) High School.

He worked at U.S. Rubber Co. in Connecticut, and later owned and operated Mason Excavating Service there.

Mr. Mason was a veteran of the Merchant Marine.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Naugatuck and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 1861 in Bennington.

He enjoyed horse racing and had owned race horses in earlier years.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth Ann Mason-Proctor of Carlsbad, Calif.; three sons, William Mason of Fairfield, Conn., Edward Mason of Carlsbad, Calif., and James Mason of Clarkston, Wash.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Burke; and a brother, Edward Mason.

The memorial service will be held May 3 at 1 p.m. at St. Francis Church in Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James cemetery in Naugatuck.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bennington County Meals on Wheels, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Juan A. Alvarez

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. — Juan Antonio Alvarez, 52, died April 7, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt.

He was born March 30, 1951, in Seville, Spain, the son of Antonio and Maria (Rassero) Alvarez.

He received his education in Spain, and most of his teenage years in Switzerland, where he trained to be a chef and maitre de.

He married Maddelena Duca on Sept. 6, 1975, in Seville. He and his family moved to the United States in 1984.

Mr. Alvarez had worked at the Pagliacci Restaurant in Albany, Trattoria Siciliana in Lake George, Chaucers Restaurant in Clifton Park and Milano Restaurant in Latham. For the past seven years, he owned and operated the Sugar Maple Inn in Bennington.

He enjoyed woodworking, and watching tennis and soccer.

Survivors include his wife of Hoosick Falls; four daughters, Natasha, Veronica, Tania and Monica Alvarez, all of Hoosick Falls; a son, Antonio Alvarez of Hoosick Falls; his mother of Seville; two brothers, Umberto Alvarez and Octavio Alvarez, both of Seville; two sisters, Lucrezia and Herminia of Seville; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a sister, Rosario.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 9:15 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington with a prayer and continue at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington, Vt., with the celebration of Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will take place in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Chapter of the American Heart Association, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vt., 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Francis I. Bean

Francis I. Bean, 101, of Rutland, died April 9, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 22, 1901, in Haverhill, Mass., the son of Irving and Anna (Brown) Bean.

He graduated from Haverhill (Mass.) High School, Massachusetts Agricultural College and the University of Vermont, where he completed his graduate studies.

He moved to Vermont in 1925 and started a 41-year career in public education. He was a teacher and principal at Middletown Springs High School for four years, and had the same responsibilities at the Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax for the next four years. He then moved to Rutland where he taught high school math and science. In 1945 he became principal of Meldon School and later of Rutland Junior High School.

During World War II he helped with the construction, planning and direction of a city canning center at the Dana School Building. Another city project he managed was the city swimming pool.

Mr. Bean was a member of the First Baptist Church, and a founding member and first president of the Teachers’ Credit Union.

Survivors include his wife, Grace (Foster) Bean, whom he married in 1943.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Nellie (Shaw) Bean; and a sister, Alice Bean.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Permanent Fund, 81 Center St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.

Frederick G. Chapin

PITTSFORD — Frederick G. Chapin, 84, died April 9, 2003, at Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, Va.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Edith St. John Falkenbury

FAIR HAVEN — Edith Mae St. John Falkenbury, 94, died April 9, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Samuel S. Gray Jr.

NEWTOWN, Pa. — Samuel S. Gray Jr., 93, died March 22, 2003, at Pennswood Village in Newtown.

He was born in 1909.

He graduated from Mercersburg Academy, Yale University in 1933 and Temple School of Law in 1937.

Mr. Gray joined with Arthur Eastburn Sr. in 1946 to form the law firm of Eastburn & Gray. During his professional career, he served 10 years as solicitor for Bucks County and 20 years for area school districts. In 1988, the Bucks County Bar Association honored Mr. Gray for 50 years of distinguished service and leadership.

He served with the 3rd Army of Gen. George Patton Jr. during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge with the 945th Field Artillery Battalion. He also served as the officer in charge of liberation of Flossenburg Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia.

He was a member of the Newton Rotary Club, the Newton Exchange Club and Morrell Smith Post 440 Legion. He was a life member of the Knights of Pythias, the Newtown Horse Thieves and the Masons. He also was a member of Newtown Presbyterian Church.

He enjoyed playing bridge and history.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine (Davis) Gray of Pennswood Village and Cliff Island, Maine; three daughters, Martha Larson of Massillon, Ohio, Elizabeth Hollingworth of Muskogee, Okla., and Susan E.G. Moll of Lawrenceville, N.J.; a son, John Gray of Proctor, Vt.; two stepdaughters, Susan Atkinson of Bristol and Mary Ellen McNitt of Thornton; eight grandchildren, one step-grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Martha Dinsmore, in 1998.

The memorial service was held March 28 at Penn Hall in Pennswood Village, Newtown.

Jean R. Reidhaar

PINE ISLAND, Fla. — Jean Rita Reidhaar, 74, died April 2, 2003.

She was born Oct. 9, 1928, in Danbury, Conn., the daughter of John and Sue (Farioly) White.

She graduated from Danbury (Conn.) High School.

She worked as a bookkeeper for various auto dealers in Connecticut and Vermont.

She was a volunteer at FISH and Cape Coral Hospital, both in Florida.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Tomasini of Danbury, Conn., Nancy Moot of Clarendon Springs, Vt., and Kathy Pomainville of Mifflenburg, Pa.; three sons, William Hallock of Wolcott, Conn., Allan Hallock of North Fort Myers, and John Hallock of Walkertown, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Berry of Fort Myers; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a grandson.

Funeral services will be held in May in Pine Island at the convenience of the family.
