Dr. Edward F. Houlihan

DORSET — Dr. Edward F. Houlihan, age 71, died at his Dorset residence with his family at his side Wednesday, April 9, 2003. He was born in New Haven, Conn., on November 18, 1931. He was the son of Edward and Mildred Houlihan. His elementary and high school education were completed in New Haven, Conn., followed by his formal education at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., and graduating in 1953 with a B.A. Degree in Government and Economics. He obtained his M.S. Degree in Education from Eastern Connecticut State University (Willimantic State College) in 1962, followed by his Sixth Year Certificate in Education received from the University of Connecticut in 1964, and ultimately obtained his Doctor of Education Degree in 1989 from Fordham University, Lincoln Center, New York. He received a distinguished award from the Fordham Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa for having written the top dissertation that year in Educational Administration.

Married to the former Lucia Mary Abate of New Britain, Conn., in 1956; they are the parents of Cathlin Houlihan Palmer of Sandy Hook, Conn., Megan A. Houlihan of Malvern, Pa., Brenna A. Houlihan of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Shana A. Houlihan of Dorset, Vt. Grandchildren include A.J. Palmer II, Caitlin Marie Palmer and Christian Brennan Palmer.

Dr. Houlihan began his career as a teacher and became the Principal of the Hampton Consolidated School in Hampton, Conn., (1960-63). In 1963, he was appointed Principal of Ward V and North Barre School in Barre, Vt., and in 1966 was named Principal of the Waterbury School in Waterbury, Vt., (1966-69). From 1969-72, he was Assistant Superintendent at the Chittenden South Supervisory Union in Shelburne, Vt. In 1972, he was selected as Superintendent of Schools for the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union and served in that capacity until 1985. Following his superintendency, he served as the Principal of the Sunderland Elementary School from 1985 until his retirement in 1990.

Dr. Houlihan was chosen as one of “100 Top School Administrators in North America” by Executive Educator Magazine in 1980. He belonged to and participated in many educational associations during his career. He was a member of the Vermont Superintendents Association (VSA) and was appointed to various offices, including that of President of the VSA in 1978. He also belonged to the American Association of School Administrators and was selected as a delegate to represent the Vermont Superintendents Association at the National Convention of the American Association of School Administrators in New Orleans, La., in 1979. In addition, he was a member of the following organizations: Vermont Education Association in which he served on the Board of Directors in 1974, the National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa, the Southwest Vermont Superintendents Association in which he served as president in 1976, the Vermont School Boards Association, was a trustee for the Mt. Laurel School in Manchester, Vt. He also served on the Vermont State Certification Board, the Vermont Special Education Advisory Committee and as Co-Director of Negotiations for the Vermont School Boards Association Workshops. Dr. Houlihan also instructed graduate level classes and acted as an educational mentor at the University of Vermont and Castleton State College. In 1969, he was recognized and awarded the Outstanding Young Educator’s Award by both the Waterbury and Vermont Jaycees. Dr. Houlihan believed in creating the highest educational opportunities for all children.

He and his wife Lucia have been residents of Dorset, Vt., since 1972.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Saint Paul’s Church in Manchester, Vt., Monday, April 14, at 10 a.m. Friends may call Sunday, April 13, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Brewster Funeral Service, a selected and independent funeral home in Manchester, Vt. For those who wish, memorial gifts may be made to either: The Manchester Rescue Squad, Dorset Nursing Association or Vermont Diabetes Association, in care of Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. 885, Manchester, Vt., 05255.

Everett West

SOUTH LONDONDERRY — Everett West, 66, died April 9, 2003, at his home.

He was born Nov. 26, 1936, the son of Mona and Malcolm West.

He graduated from Chester High School in 1955.

Mr. West married Louise Howe on Aug. 31, 1968.

He worked at Stratton as a surveyor and an accountant. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years, 20 of those years as postmaster in South Londonderry, retiring in 1992.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Mr. West was a member and president of Champion Fire Co. 5 for 50 years and a member of the Londonderry Credit Union. He was also a member of the South Londonderry First Baptist Church.

He enjoyed hunting.

Survivors include his wife; his mother of Putney; a sister, Janis King of Putney; a brother, Gary West of Jamaica; a stepson, Scott Howe; a stepdaughter, Kathleen Cornell; two grandsons; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his father; and two brothers.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at South Londonderry First Baptist Church.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Champion Fire Co. 5, P.O. Box 5, South Londonderry, 05155.

Jean W. Lillie

EAST POWNAL — Jean W. Lillie, 81, died April 10, 2003, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

She was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Bennington, the daughter of Earl and Flossie (Ryder) Wood.

She graduated from Bennington High School.

She married Ernest Lillie on Nov. 16, 1940, in Bennington. He died in 1974.

Mrs. Lillie was a member of the East Pownal Fire Auxiliary and the Pownal Senior Center. She was a former member of the Home Dem Group.

She enjoyed crocheting and doing crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Mason of Searsburg, Lorraine Gates of North Pownal and Judith Somerville of Bennington; two sons, Michael Lillie of Shaftsbury and Ralph Lillie of East Pownal; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by a sister, Clara James; and a grandson in 1991.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Gaylord Campbell, pastor of the Pownal United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Oak Hill cemetery in Pownal.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

All members of the East Pownal Fire Auxiliary and the Pownal Valley Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home today at 7:15 p.m. to pay their respects to the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwestern Vermont Health Care Auxiliary for Pallative Care, the Pownal Rescue Squad, or the East Pownal Fire Auxiliary, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Thomas F. Moore Jr. Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Thomas Francis Moore Jr., who died April 3, 2003, was celebrated Monday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Lee Smith, chaplain at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass., officiating. Burial followed in Park lawn cemetery.

Pianist was Uel Wade and soloist was Mr. Moore’s son, James. Bagpiper was David Rennie.

Vermont Army National Guard provided military honors. The flag was presented to Mr. Moore’s wife, Margaret by their son, Patrick. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Leonard E. Morin Rites

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. — The funeral service for Leonard W. Morin, who died April 6, 2003, was held Thursday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bennington, officiating.

American Legion Post 13 provided military honors. Ralph Brown and Joseph Krawczyk presented the flag to Mr. Morin’s grandson, Pvt. Jeremy Morin of the U.S. Marine Corps. Taps were sounded.

A reception was held at the Mount Anthony Country Club following the service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Anna W. Atwell

GOSHEN — Anna Wagner Atwell, 88, died April 10, 2003, at Rowan Court Health & Rehabilitation Center in Barre.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Cedric Vose

EAST MIDDLEBURY — Cedric “Rick” Vose, 55, died April 9, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with cancer.

He was born May 22, 1947, in Brattleboro, the son of Daniel and Dorothea (Bolster) Vose.

He worked in the construction business for many years, for Middlebury Public Works from 1980 to 1994, and began his own business, Rick Vose Trucking, in 1994.

Survivors include his wife, Robin (Meacham) Vose of East Middlebury; a son, Danny of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Lisa Malinowski of Orwell and Andrea Senecal of Milton; a sister, Janice Gardner of Hampton, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother, Daniel.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Friends may call Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, 3 Forest St., New Canaan, Conn., 06840.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Bernice T. Bushey

VERGENNES — Bernice Tricell Bushey, 82, died April 9, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

She was born Nov. 19, 1920, in Charlotte, the daughter of Earnest and Eda (Grapatin) Tricell.

She graduated from Beeman Academy in 1939 and Castleton State College in 1941.

She married Melvin Bushey on Nov. 7, 1943. He died in 1971.

Mrs. Bushey taught in a one-room schoolhouse in West Ferrisburgh from 1943 to 1945, retiring to be a full-time wife and mother.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes.

Survivors include five sons, Paul Bushey, Anthony Bushey, Wayne Bushey, all of Vergennes, Dale Bushey of Addison and Kyle Bushey of New Haven; three daughters, Lynn Fuller of Marshfield, Wis., Becky LaBerge of Vergennes and Deborah McCann of Springfield; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Frank Tricell; three sisters, Ardelia Mack, Elsie Elmio and Ellen Vincent; two grandchildren and a great-grandson.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes. Burial will take place in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral home in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434, Hurricane Lane, Williston, 05495.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Peter J. DePoy

Peter J. DePoy, 44, of Rutland, died Oct. 29, 2002, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a brief illness.

He was born Jan. 1, 1958, in Rutland, the son of Donald and Martha (Norton) DePoy.

He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1976 and attended Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md.

He married Linda Marchese on March 15, 1986.

Mr. DePoy worked as a regional sales manager for industrial lighting at General Electric Co. in Rutland for seven years, and at Graybar Electric for 15 years.

He was a member of Christ the King Church and the Proctor-Pittsford Country Club. He was past president of Christ the King Athletic Association, a board member of the Athletic Club, and a basketball and flag football coach for 15 years at Christ the King. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

Survivors include his wife of Rutland; a daughter, Candice DePoy of Rutland; a son, Michael DePoy of Rutland; a sister, Martha Pratico of Rutland; three brothers, Thomas DePoy of Rutland Town, Michael DePoy of Chicago, Ill., and Christopher DePoy of Saratoga, N.Y.; nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his father in 1959; his mother, Martha DePoy Moore in 1998; and a sister, Mary Kay Harris in 1997.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Christ the King Church in Rutland. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery.

Calling hours will be held today from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount St. Joseph Athletic Association, in care of Richard Densmore, 85 Mead St., West Rutland, 05777, or Christ the King Athletic Program, South Main Street, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Ruth Manley

CONCORD, Mass. — Ruth St. Marie Manley, 92, a former longtime resident of Rutland, Vt., died Oct. 29, 2002, at Rivercrest Nursing Home in Concord.

She was married to Walter Manley, who died in 1966.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
