Barbara Denis

MIDDLEBURY — Barbara Denis, 70, died Oct. 30, 2002, at Helen Porter Nursing Home.

She was born April 7, 1932, the daughter of Augustus and Kathleen Pidgeon.

She worked as a store clerk and waitress in the area, and most recently at Steve’s Park Diner in Middlebury.

Survivors include two sisters, Edith Steady of Bristol and Carla LaFountain of Salisbury; three sons, Anthony of Bristol, Gerald of Morrisville and Dennis of Salisbury; a daughter, Kathleen Moore of Benson; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son, Andre; a brother, Duane; and a sister, Verna.

Calling hours will be held Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury, followed by a memorial service. Burial will follow the service.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service.

Samuel S. Saiber

NEWARK, N.J. — Samuel S. Saiber, 95, died Oct. 28, 2002, in West Orange.

He was born Dec. 6, 1906.

He graduated from Rutgers Law School in 1928.

He was admitted to the bar in 1929, and specialized in trusts and estates and tax law. Mr. Saiber practiced law for more than 73 years, and founded Saiber Schlesinger Satz & Goldstein.

He was a member of the New Jersey State Assembly from 1950 to 1954, and later served as surrogate of Essex County. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and served for years as secretary/treasurer of its New Jersey section. Mr. Saiber served as president of the Essex County Bar Association which awarded him the Lifetime Attorney Achievement Award. In the spring of 2002, the Essex County Bar Association established the Samuel S. Saiber Professional Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the legal profession.

He was president of Rutgers Law School Alumni Association and received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from that association in 1972.

Survivors include a son, Michael Saiber of Saxonburg, Pa.; a daughter, Cookie Mac of Rutland, Vt.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held today 11 a.m. at the Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel in Livingston.

Georgina Lane

NEWTON UPPER FALLS, Mass. — Georgina D. “Ena” (Smith) Lane, 103, died Oct. 26, 2002, at Newton Wellesley Hospital.

She was born Sept. 20, 1899.

She was retired from Vita Needle and Cyanimid of Needham.

She was a former member of the Newton Upper Falls Women’s Club, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Elsie Janis Drum and Bugle Corp.

Survivors include three sons, Frank Lane of Billerica, Graham Lane of Bethlehem, Pa., and Joseph Lane of Stoughton; six daughters, Enid DeDoming of Ira, Vt., Doreen Sheridan of Pueblo, Colo., Martha Sonnier of Lafayette, La., Virginia Dolph and Barbara Vlass, both of Newton Upper Falls and Patricia Martin of Ludlow, Vt.; 26 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Newton Upper Falls. Burial will follow in Newton cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Make A Wish Foundation, 295 Devonshire St., Boston, 02110, or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, 01701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Eaton Funeral Home in Needham.

McPhee Infant

Maddison Bryce McPhee, infant daughter of Rodney and Nicole (Peck) McPhee, died April 11, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include her parents, a sister, Alexa M. McPhee, all of Rutland Town, paternal grandparents, Edward and Patricia McPhee of Chittenden and Bonnie McPhee of Rutland Town, three uncles, Brian McPhee of Denver, Colo., Heath Peck and Chris Peck, both of Florida.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Marvin and Michele Peck.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation of Vermont, 100 Dorset St. No. 13, South Burlington, Vt., 05403.

Kenneth J. Reilly

NORTH CHITTENDEN — Kenneth J. Reilly, 81, died April 13, 2003, at Mountain View Center Genesis Eldercare in Rutland.

He was born June 17, 1921, in Newark, N.J., the son of James and Ruth (Gardner) Reilly.

He was a photographer with the Hillcrest Photo Club in New Jersey for many years, and a volunteer firefighter in Denville, Mont., for many years.

Mr. Reilly was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in Europe, and was awarded many medals.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648 in Rutland, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus in New Jersey and North Carolina. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Southport, N.C., before moving to Vermont.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor (Waterfield) Reilly of North Chittenden; two stepdaughters, Gayle Jones of Boiling Springs, N.C., and Judith Romanelli of Old Hickory, Tenn.; two stepsons, Robert Waterfield of North Chittenden and Harrell Waterfield of Outer Banks, N.C.; five step-grandchildren; and one step-great-granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in Chittenden. Burial will be take place at later date in Gate of Heaven cemetery in East Hanover, N.J.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Cancer Center, 160 Allen St., Rutland, 05701, the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05546, or St. Robert’s Catholic Church, 250 Chittenden Road, Chittenden, 05737.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Mary A. McSweeney

FAIR HAVEN — Mary Ann McSweeney, 59, a former resident of Burlington, died April 13, 2003, at Mountain View Center Genesis Eldercare in Rutland.

She was born Sept. 29, 1943, in Richmond, Va., the daughter of George and Eileen (Chadwick) Moulton.

Survivors include four children; six brothers and sisters; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Shelburne Village cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Gloria Moulton Children’s Fund, through the office of the funeral home, P.O. Box 86, Fair Haven, 05743.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home.

Eleanor M. Pratt

CARY, N.C. — Eleanor M. Pratt, 78, a former resident of Rockville, Md., died April 11, 2003.

She was born May 7, 1924, in Braintree, Mass., the daughter of Francis and Mary LeVangie.

She and her family later moved to Rutland, Vt., where she graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in 1942. She graduated from Emmanuel College in 1946.

Survivors include four sons, Michael Pratt of Atlanta, Joseph Pratt and Daniel Pratt, both of Cary, and David Pratt of Columbia, Md.; four daughters, Mary Pratt of Englewood, Colo., Martha Gisriel of Williamsport, Md., Deborah Pratt of Chicago and Judith Pratt Rossiter of Reisterstown, Md.; two sisters, Joanne McDonald of Ridgefield, Conn., and Alice McIntyre of Virginia Beach, Va.; and 19 grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, James Pratt.

The funeral Mass was celebrated Monday in Cary. The graveside service will be held today at 1 p.m. in Gate of Heaven cemetery in Silver Spring, Md.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 64221, St. Paul, Minn., 55164-9355, Habitat for Humanity International, P.O. Box 1088, Americus, Ga., 31709-1088, or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary.

James W. Boretos

Funeral services for James W. Boretos, 65, of Highland, Md., who died April 7, in Maryland, will be held Tuesday, April 15, in the Clifford Funeral Home at 3 p.m.

Friends may call on Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. in the funeral home.

Frederick G. Chapin

The funeral service for Frederick G. Chapin, 84, of Rutland, who died April 9, 2003, will be held today at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home with the prayer service to be held at 6 p.m.

Fellowship will follow at St. Alphonsus Church Hall in Pittsford.

Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.

Donald C. Hamel Rites

The funeral Mass for Donald C. Hamel, 68, of Rutland, who died April 10, 2003, was celebrated Monday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with the Rev. Francis Privé, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery.

Organist was Richard Brown and soloist was Mary Beth Baird.

American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. James Burke presented the flag to Mrs. Hamel.

Bearers were John Hamel, Michael Hamel, David Hamel, Sean Hamel, Robert Hall and Alfred Ghio.

A prayer service was held Sunday at the Aldous Funeral Home by the Rev. Privé.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Renovation Fund, 17 Lincoln Ave., Rutland, 05701, or the Rutland Intermediate School Student Fund, Rutland Public School, 6 Church St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Mary Goodspeed Rites

The funeral service for Mary Tifft Goodspeed, 83, of Rutland, who died April 11, 2003, was held Monday at the Tossing Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Hackett Jr., pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Wells cemetery.

Bearers were Darren Foster, Christopher Foster, Roy Wolcott, Alson Wolcott, Nate Natoli and Brian Milo.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.

Christine E. Brown

WINDSOR — Christine E. Brown, 80, died Saturday at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Emergency Department in Windsor.

She was born July 24, 1922, in Vermont, the daughter of Peter and Edith (Trombley) Carter. She received her schooling in Rutland.

She married Leo Neuenswander in 1950. He died in 1985.

She was a member of American Legion Post 25 Auxiliary in Windsor.

She enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Chaffee of Windsor and Deborah Fruit of Las Vegas, Nev.; a son, William Neuenswander of Bennington; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers.

Memorial services will be held Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor with the Rev. Paul N. Belhumeur, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor, officiating.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Windsor High School Girls Softball Team, in care of Bob Hingston, Athletic Director, 19 Ascutney St., Windsor, 05089.
