Shirley E. Costle

WOODSTOCK — Shirley E. Costle, 83, of West Lebanon, N.H., and formerly of Bethel, died May 27, 2003.

She was born May 1, 1920, in Ennis, Mont., the daughter of Mildred and Arthur Ellinghouse.

She worked as a hospital administrator in San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C., and served in the Peace Corps in Grenada.

She enjoyed reading and painting.

Survivors include a son, Douglas Costle; an aunt; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 4 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church on the Green in Woodstock. A private burial will follow.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Woodstock Historical Society, 26 Elm St., Woodstock, 05091.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Alexander N. Levlock

SPRINGFIELD — Alexander N. Levlock, 88, died May 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born Feb. 9, 1915, in Springfield, the son of Nicholas and Sophie (Savchick) Levanovich.

He graduated from Springfield High School.

He married Gertrude Sprague on Feb. 8, 1947, in Washington, D.C. She died in 2002.

Mr. Levlock worked at Fellows Gear Shaper Co. in Springfield as a foreman in the sheet metal shop for many years.

He was a member of the Robert L. Johnson Post 771, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former member of the Springfield Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Survivors include a sister, Nellie Parmenter of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Nicholas Levlocke and Michael Levlock; and three sisters, Lucille Levlock, Katherine Klimeck and Mary Small.

The graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Oakland cemetery in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Carmichael, pastor of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Affiliate Inc., 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, 05446.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Robert E. Palin

ATHENS — Robert E. Palin, 84, died May 27, 2003, at Grace Cottage.

He was born Aug. 4, 1918, in Greenfield, Mass., the son of Zephyr and Mary (Wahl) Palin.

He graduated from Greenfield High School.

He married Martha Wyman on Nov. 27, 1940.

Mr. Palin worked at United Aircraft of Glastonbury, Conn., for 30 years, retiring as foreman of the experimental department at age 55.

He was active in the United Church of Christ in Glastonbury, Conn., where he served as deacon and taught Sunday school. After moving to Athens, he became active in the Community Christian Church. He served as patron of the King Solomon Temple Lodge.

He enjoyed entertaining, and was known for his tap dancing.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Edward Palin of Ludlow, Mass., and the Rev. Robert Palin of Jamesport, N.Y.; a daughter, Patricia Cartwright of West Haven, Conn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Friday, at 3 p.m., at the Community Christian Church in Athens. Burial will follow in the Athens Valley cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Harriett E. Hosford

NORTH HARTLAND — The graveside service for Harriett E. Hosford, 75, who died March 6, 2003, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the Hartland Village cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Joanne B. Ballard

GUILFORD, Conn. — The graveside service for Joanne B. Ballard, 54, who died Dec. 19, 2002, will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Hillside cemetery in Thetford Center.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Eleanor P. Elwell Rites

BENNINGTON — The graveside service for Eleanor P. Elwell, who died May 23, 2003, was held Wednesday in White Chapel cemetery.

The Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, officiated.

Bearers were William Wolf, Robert Long, Robert Covey, Lawrence Shutts and Mark Shea.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Joyce S. Stannard

WHITEHALL, N.Y. — Joyce S. Stannard, 75, of Molinero Trailer Park, Route 4, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland, Vermont, following a short illness.

Born on January 25, 1928, in Whitehall, N.Y., she was the daughter of Thomas and Selina Mary (Gandrow) Jones.

Joyce attended Whitehall Central School and later moved to Fair Haven, Vermont, where she resided for many years.

On April 4, 1953, she married Charles M. Stannard, who passed away on November 12, 1989.

She was a member of the Notre Dame des Victoires Church in Whitehall.

She enjoyed crocheting and was known for donating the hats she made to needy people in the area.

She was also a member of the Whitehall American Legion Post 83 Auxiliary and the South Glens Falls Eagle Club, Aerie 2486. Residing in Whitehall for the past four years, she also spent her winters in Brooksville, Florida.

Besides her husband, she is predeceased by two sisters, Mary Rock and Elizabeth Howk; a brother, Thomas “Sonny” Jones; a brother-in-law, Atlee Thomas; a son-in-law, John Carpenter; and a nephew, John Jones Jr.

She is survived by her children, Vicky Stannard and her friend, Charlie Towle of Fair Haven, Joyceann Carpenter of Queensbury, George Howk and his wife Mary of Columbia, S.C., and Marc Stannard and his wife Sue of Fort Ann; 10 grandchildren, Charles Ward of Wilton, William Ward currently serving in the U.S. Air Force in Korea, John Carpenter Jr. of Queensbury, Julie McDermott of Glens Falls, Joseph Carpenter currently serving in the U.S. Air Force in Las Vegas, Nevada, Matthew Howk of Columbia, S.C., Jamie Howk of Glens Falls and Marc Stannard Jr., Derek Stannard and Shawnna, all of Fort Ann; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and her companion, Thomas Hewitt of Whitehall.

A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, May 30, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the family plot in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair Haven, Vt.

There are no calling hours scheduled.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of a donation in Joyce’s name to the Skenesborough EMS, P.O. Box 333, Whitehall, New York, 12887.

Arrangements are entrusted to Glenn Ward of Simone Funeral Home Inc., 105 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs, New York.

Lydia J. Lafontaine

Lydia J. (Carboneau) Lafontaine, 82, of Rutland died May 29, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 17, 1921, in Rutland, the daughter of Pasquale and Giovanina (Silvestro) Piscopo.

She graduated from Rutland High School in 1939.

Mrs. Lafontaine worked for New England Telephone Co., and later worked in the admitting department at Rutland Hospital for more than 20 years. She was also a meals site coordinator at the Bardwell House for the Meals on Wheels program.

She enjoyed birdwatching and flower gardening.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Carboneau of Ludlow, Michael Carboneau of Rutland Town, Mark Carboneau of West Rutland and David Lafontaine of Rutland; a sister, Anne Libbey of Rutland; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Carboneau, and her second husband, David Lafontaine; a sister, Jessie McFarren; and five brothers, Charles Piscopo, John Piscopo, Ralph Piscopo, Albert Piscopo and Patrick Piscopo.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland with the Rev. William Chant officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary cemetery in Rutland.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse-Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Ralph P. Muscatello

Ralph P. Muscatello, 72, of Rutland died May 29, 2003, at his home.

There are no calling hours or funeral service planned.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Stanley B. Kulig

WEST RUTLAND — Stanley B. Kulig, 76, died May 29, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was the husband of Celia (Godleski) Kulig of West Rutland.

Funeral services are pending for Monday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Shirley E. Brown

MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS — Shirley E. Brown, age 85, of Middletown Springs passed away after a long illness on May 28, 2003, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland.

Shirley was born in Middletown Springs, Vermont, on March 29, 1918, the daughter of the late Emory and Grace (Coy) McLaughlin. She was a graduate of Middletown Springs High School and Castleton Normal School. Mrs. Brown continued her studies at UVM, Tufts and Harvard. She began her teaching career in Granville, Vermont, and then taught in Middletown Springs. She continued to teach for many years in Melrose, Mass., until she retired.

Shirley married Ronald Brown on July 28, 1951, and they were married for 53 years. She and Ronald resided in Melrose, Mass., for many years. Mrs. Brown was very active in the community of Melrose, a member of the Methodist Church, the Grange, and a long time member of the Historical Society in Middletown. She enjoyed entertaining and will be remembered for planning and giving many parties for her family and for always being there for people in need.

Shirley is survived by one sister, Elsie Norton of Middletown Springs; three nieces, Mary Hughes of Clearwater, Fla., Marlene Collins of Burlington, Vt., and Jean Ann Reynolds of Middletown Springs; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brown was predeceased by her husband, Ronald W. Brown on January 3, 2003. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Esther, Evelyn and Elizabeth.

Relatives and friends may call at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney on Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m. There will be a funeral service for both Mr. and Mrs. Brown at the funeral home, 11 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Roland Mitchenson, pastor of the Community Church of Middletown Springs, will officiate. Burial will follow at the family plot in the Pleasant View cemetery in Middletown Springs.

Donations in the memory of both Mr. and Mrs. Brown may be sent to the Community Church of Middletown Springs, Middletown Springs, Vt., 05757.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Ave., Poultney.
