WELLS — The graveside service for Rosemary Viger, 64, who died Jan. 9, 2003, will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Wells cemetery in Wells.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

John G. Hadeka

WELLS — The graveside service for John G. Hadeka, 89, who died Feb. 10, 2003, will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Raphael’s cemetery in Poultney. The Rev. Adam J. Krempa, pastor of the Church of St. Raphael’s the Archangel, will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Herbert E. Clark Sr. Rites

BRANDON — A graveside committal service for Herbert E. Clark Sr., 93, who died Jan. 6, 2003, was held Saturday in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford. The Rev. Russ Gates, pastor of the Union Church of Proctor, officiated.

Bearers were Kenneth Adams, Ronald Clark, Robbie Clark, Gregg Clark, Michael Torres and Harold Adams.

The Barnard Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry J. Lanfear Rites

CLARENDON — A memorial service for Jerry Joseph Lanfear, 40, who died May 4, 2003, was held Saturday at the Aldous Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Moston, pastor of the Clarendon Old Brick Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Chippenhook cemetery.

Music was provided by Bill and Martha Bless.

A color guard of American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. James Burke presented the flag to Mr. Lanfear’s parents.

Grace Bean Rites

The funeral service for Grace F. Bean, 89, of Rutland, who died May 20, 2003, was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Bruce A. Bishop, pastor, officiated. Burial will be in Edgell Grove cemetery in Framingham, Mass., at a later date.

Organist was Mary Millett.

Bearers were Dominic Paul, Robert Stafford, Robert Hathaway, and Ernest Hathaway, all of Rutland, and John Wright of Pittsford.

Mrs. Bean worked in the superintendent’s office in the Rutland City school system and also for the Rutland Housing Authority.

The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen Pellegrino Rites

CASTLETON — A funeral Mass for Kathleen F. Pellegrino, 81, who died May 20, 2003, was celebrated Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton. The Rev. Joseph N. Pray officiated. Burial followed in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.

Organist was Hazel Beals. Soloist was Sharon Bales.

Bearers were Tim Brough, Scott Ryan, Mike Ryan, Jack Blanchaud, Bill Pellegrino and Dan McKee.

Honorary bearers were members of the Altar Society of St. John’s.

A wake service was conducted Friday evening by the Rev. Pray at the Durfee Funeral Home of Fair Haven.

Francesca P. Covell

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Francesca Picchioli “Frances” Covell, 91, died May 23, 2003, at home.

She was born Jan. 7, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Serafino and Rosalia (Romeo) Picchioli. She grew up in the Bronx and worked at the Guild Co. in lower Manhattan, watching the construction of the Empire State building from her office window.

She married Carl Covell of White River Junction on Jan. 7, 1938. They operated Covell’s Wallpaper, Paint and Art Supplies in White River Junction for many years, and she continued to operate it after his death in 1961, until retiring in 1975.

She was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing the piano, drawing, needlework and reading.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Roberts of Wilton, N.H.; a son, Timothy Covell Sr. of White River Junction; a stepgrandson whom she raised, Paul Covell of Middletown, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a niece.

She was predeceased by two brothers, John and Antonio Picola; and two sisters, Cira and Antoinette Picola.

The funeral service will be held June 4 at 11 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Hartford Recreation Department Scholarship Fund, 171 Bridge St., White River Junction, 05001.

Fred Boyd

READSBORO — Fred Boyd, 83, a lifelong resident of Readsboro, died May 25, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Arrangements are pending with the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

John A. Peebles Jr. Rites

PERKINSVILLE — A funeral service for John A. Peebles Jr., 60, who died May 21, 2003, was held Saturday at the Perkinsville Community Church. The Rev. Daniel Kelin of Ascutney officiated. Burial followed in Plain cemetery in Perkinsville.

Bearers were Kevin Peebles, John Peebles, Clinton Peebles, Jason Strout, Patrick Warren and Loren Strout.

The Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield was in charge of arrangements.

Herman Burton Rites

SPRINGFIELD — A funeral service for Herman Burton, 87, who died May 22, 2003, was held Sunday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in the Summer Hill cemetery.

Bearers were Larry Hennessey, Sean Hennessey, Richard Burton, Jeffrey Libbey and Eric Nelson.

The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Donald M. Goodrich Rites

PROCTORSVILLE — The committal service for Donald M. Goodrich, 77, who died Jan. 7, 2003, was held Saturday at Hillcrest cemetery in Proctorsville with the Rev. Raymond Fournier officiating.

Military honors were provided by the American Legion posts of Ludlow and Chester and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Goodrich’s grandson, Geoffrey Moonen, sounded taps.

Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Brooks Rites

CHESTER — The committal service for Virginia Brooks, 95, who died Jan. 12, 2003, was held at North Street cemetery in Chester on Saturday with the Rev. Thomas Charlton officiating.

Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes was in charge of arrangements.

Howard J. Rainey

RANDOLPH — Howard J. Rainey, 81, of Randolph died May 23, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction.

He was born April 11, 1922, in Whitefield, N.H., the son of John E. and Mary Ann (Day) Rainey. He graduated from Randolph High School, where he was active in baseball and basketball. A member of Randolph High’s first state championship basketball team, he later tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.

He married Vera Manning in Randolph on Oct. 18, 1942. She died in 1993.

He married Lorraine Chase in Randolph in 1994.

He had been a machinist in Springfield, owned and operated his own long-haul trucking business and drove taxicab in Randolph. He owned pool halls in Randolph, Bethel, Newport, Northfield and Barre, and sold and restored pool tables all over New England.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion.

Mr. Rainey enjoyed league bowling, fishing, hunting and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Loraine Chase of Randolph; a son, Devon Rainey of Barnard; a daughter, Sandi Thurston of Georgia, Vt.; two stepsons, Robert Chase of Bethel and Steven Chase of Stockbridge; a stepdaughter, Sally Rader of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Leota Hoffman; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and stepgrandchildren.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Pleasant View cemetery in Randolph with the Rev. Kathy Eddy officiating.

There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph Union High School Athletic Fund, 15 Forest St., Randolph, 05060.

The Day Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Williams

LEICESTER — The graveside committal service and burial for Kenneth Wright “Bud” Williams, 68, who died Feb. 8, 2003, will be held today at noon at East Shoreham cemetery. The Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, will officiate.

Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon is in charge of arrangements.

Sylvia M. Pixley

BRISTOL — Sylvia M. Pixley, 72, died May 25, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

She was born May 20, 1931, in Litchfield, Conn., the daughter of Fred and Bessie (Humphrey) Pixley.

She was an avid photographer of covered bridges and enjoyed riding her motorcycle through Vermont. She enjoyed wildlife, flowers and cooking.

She is survived by a daughter, Debra Pixley of Middlebury; a brother, Arthur Pixley; two sisters, Addie Pollard of West Cornwall, Conn., and Barbara Derby of North Billerica, Mass; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held June 2 at Lincoln United Church. Burial will be in Maple cemetery in Lincoln.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 11, Vergennes, 05491.

The Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol is in charge of arrangements.

Ernest D. Bertrand

VERGENNES — Ernest Dorala Bertrand, 59, died May 24, 2003, at his home following a year-long battle with cancer.

He was born July 30, 1943, in Cornwall, the son of Dorala and Lucille (Quinnville) Bertrand. He graduated from Middlebury Union High School in 1962.

He married Brenda J. Lowell of Brandon on Sept. 7, 1963.

He served in the National Guard for seven years during the Vietnam War. He worked for Humiston’s IGA in Brandon for nine years. He and his wife owned a store in Orwell for three years until it burned. He worked at G.S. Blodgetts in Burlington until his retirement last year due to ill health.

He was an active member of American Legion Post 14 and of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Melissa Campono of Vergennes; two sons, Lowell Bertrand of Vergennes and Bradley Bertrand of Ferrisburgh; three sisters, Theresa Moore of Florida, Annette Boise of Cornwall, and Yvette McIntyre of Florida; two brothers, Armand Bertrand of Florida and Eugene Bertrand of Georgia; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Marcel Bertrand of Pennsylvania.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes. Burial will be in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.

Friends may call at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Addison County Home Health & Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, 05753.

Roy H. Mason

STARKSBORO — Roy H. Mason, 78, died May 25, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

He was born May 20, 1925, in Sunderland, the son of Floyd and Sadie (Kimball) Thompson.

He is survived by several cousins.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.

Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral home in Bristol on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Starksboro Fire Department, Starksboro, 05443, or Addison County Home Health and Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, 05753.
