The graveside service with military honors for Joseph Chauney Keane, 76, of Rutland, who died March 1, 2003, will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in East Clarendon cemetery.

The Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Rutland, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, 05602.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Dorothy Lawson

WALLINGFORD — The graveside service for Dorothy Lawson, 81, who died Jan. 25, 2003, will be held Saturday at noon in Newport Center cemetery in Newport.

The Rev. Donald Caskie, pastor of the Congregational Church in Wallingford, will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wallingford Congregational Church, South Main Street, Wallingford, 05773.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home.

Elizabeth C. Merrill Rites

KILLINGTON — The graveside service for Elizabeth C. Merrill, 71, who died April 3, 2003, was held Saturday in Riverside cemetery in Killington.

The Rev. Beverly Anderson, pastor of United Church of Christ in Sherburne, officiated.

Soloist was Vic Burke.

Bearers were Mark VanNiel, Frank Geier, Kevin Merrill, Robert Bowen and Dave Minard.

A gathering for family and friends was held at the Merrill residence in Killington following the graveside service.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Milton E. Merrill Rites

KILLINGTON — The graveside service for Milton Edwin Merrill, 77, who died Feb. 14, 2003, was held Saturday in Riverside cemetery in Killington.

The Rev. Beverly Anderson, pastor of United Church of Christ in Sherburne, officiated.

Soloist was Vic Burke. Guitarist was Harry Ralph accompanied by vocalist Hillary Leonard, Heather Leonard and Tim Leonard.

American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. James Burke presented the flag to Mrs. Merrill.

Bearers were Kevin Taylor, Clayton Taylor, Mark Merrill, Brian Merrill, Tim Leonard and Greg Abbott.

A gathering for family and friends was held at the Merrill residence in Killington following the graveside service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Killington Volunteer Fire Department, in care of Chief Steve Finer, RD, Killington, 05751, or the Sherburne United Church of Christ, in care of the Rev. Beverly Anderson, RD, Killington, 05751.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.

Arlene L. Ashley

STOCKBRIDGE — Arlene L. Ashley, 78, died June 4, 2003, at her home. Funeral arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

John F. Stone

CHESTER — John Stone, 68, died June 3, 2003, peacefully at his home in Chester of complications related to Parkinson’s Disease.

He was born June 21, 1934, in Paterson, N.J., the son of Elmer and Minnie Stone. He was a 1952 graduate of Chester High School, grew up in Gassetts, Vt., and attended the one-room school house there. He married Elaine Chico on August 15, 1955.

John was a longtime employee of the National Survey Company as a supervisor after serving in the U.S. Army, stationed at the Army Map Service in Washington, D.C., between 1956 and 1958. Active in his community before his illness, he served on the Prudential Committee, the Yosemite Fire Company, as a member and Chairman of the Chester Andover School Board, Chairman of the Chester Recreational Program, as a member of the Green Mountain High School Budget Committee and as a longtime member of the Board of Adjustment and Budget Committee for the Town of Chester. He also was a trustee of the Chester Academy which administers the John Butler Trust, a charitable trust that awards several scholarships to deserving Green Mountain Union High School students each year. Known for his sense of humor and his love of the outdoors, John enjoyed running, skiing, was an avid fisherman and looked forward to his annual fishing trips to Canada as well as his deer hunting weekends with family members in the fall.

He leaves his beloved wife, Elaine and only daughter, Joni, son-in-law, Edward Lastes and grandson, Marshall of Boxford, Mass. He was predeceased by his brother, Fred “Jerry” Stone. A family graveside service was held on June 4, 2004, at Pleasant View cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vermont and New Hampshire, 366 River Street, Springfield, Vermont, 05146.

Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester was in charge of arrangements.

Veontha W. White

CHESTER — Veontha W. White, 85, died June 3, 2003, at Springfield Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.

Bruce A. Lachapelle

SPRINGFIELD — Bruce Allen Lachapelle, 54, died June 4, 2003, at his parents’ home.

He was born Aug. 8, 1948, in Rutland, the son of Edward and Mary (Thomas) Lachapelle.

He attended school in Springfield.

He owned and operated the Tavern in Springfield for several years, and later opened the Stage Stop Pub in North Springfield. He also owned and operated the Valley Street Market and Deli, and for the past four years, has been doing surveying work in Port Orange, Fla.

Mr. Lachapelle was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War in the 125th Infantry Division. He received five medals including the Bronze Star.

He was a lifetime member of the Robert L. Johnson Post 771 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his parents of Springfield; two sisters, Jeannette Lachapelle of North Springfield and Brenda Lachapelle of Springfield; two brothers, Michael Lachapelle and Paul Lachapelle, both of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Peter Williams, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Friends may call Friday at the Davis Chapel one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Vermont Division, 215 North Main St., White River Junction, 05009, or the Visiting Nurses & Hospice of Southeastern Vermont, 366 River St., Springfield, 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.

Alexander Partalidis

SPRINGFIELD — Alexander “Alex” Partalidis, 70, died June 4, 2003, at his home.

He was born March 10, 1933, in Drama, Greece, the son of Solomon and Parthena (Hatzitheodorou) Partalidis.

He received his education in Greece, and came to the United States in 1965.

He lived in Holyoke, Mass., for many years, where he owned and operated several restaurants. He later moved to Bennington, where he owned and operated Mickey’s Pizza for 19 years. He recently moved to Springfield, where the family owns and operates the 371 Restaurant.

Mr. Partalidis was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Holyoke, Mass., and a member of the Bennington Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Partalidis of Springfield; a son, Alexander Partalidis of Springfield; two daughters, Parthena Walker of West Springfield, Mass., and Glykeria Ioannidis of Thessaloniki, Greece; two stepchildren, Heather Clayton of Springfield and Doug Prouty of Bennington; two stepbrothers, Stavros and Manoli, both of Greece; 15 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his first wife, Raissa (Ignatiadis) Partalidis.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Bill Partalidis and John Partalidis.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Springfield. The Rev. Harry Vulopas, pastor of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Holyoke, Mass., will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Main Street, Holyoke, Mass., 01040, or the Cancer Center at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, Hospital Drive, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Christine E. Nowlan

WEST WINDSOR — Christine E. Nowlan, 87, died June 3, 2003, at Mount Ascutney Hospital Skilled Nursing Facility in Windsor.

She was born April 8, 1916, in Salisbury, the daughter of Silas and Martha (Fish) Goddard.

She graduated from Fair Haven High School in 1934 and Castleton Normal School in 1937.

She married James Nowlan on Nov. 16, 1940, in Windsor. He died in 1990.

Mrs. Nowlan worked for the West Windsor School District for seven years, and later at the Hartland School District for 10 years, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the PM Club in West Windsor, the West Windsor Historical Society, and the Windsor County Retired Teachers Association. She was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor and a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court of St. Francis.

She was a volunteer at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center and the Windsor Southeast Correctional Facility, both in Windsor. She was a director of the Southeast Conference Council of Aging and a member of the Red Hat Society.

Mrs. Nowlan enjoyed bird watching, gardening and traveling. She also enjoyed attending sporting events at Windsor High School.

Survivors include five sons, James Nowlan of Lakeside, Calif., Peter Nowlan of Randolph, Nicholas Nowlan of Underhill, Mark Nowlan of West Windsor and Patrick Nowlan of Holyoke, Mass.; four daughters, Judith Schlegel of Windsor, Nancy Zurn of Hackettstown, N.J., Martha McClintock of Westford and Margaret Fullerton of Grand Isle; two brothers, Richard Goddard of Orwell and Reginald Goddard of Fair Haven; a sister, Ruth Goddard of Orwell; 26 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Sheddsville cemetery in West Windsor.

A reception for family and friends will follow the committal service at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Hospice Program at Mount Ascutney Hospital and Health Center, 289 County Road, Windsor, 05089.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home.

Steven J. Lounder

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Steven J. Lounder, 40, formerly of Bristol, Conn., died May 31, 2003, with cancer.

He was the son of Earl and Lorraine Lounder.

Survivors include his parents of North Springfield; two sisters, Susan Boosahda of Worcester, Mass., and Patti Kaszuba of Chugiak, Alaska; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Stephen Lounder of Bristol, Conn.; two nephews and one niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division Inc., 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt., 05602.

Elwin Phillips

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The graveside service for Elwin Phillips, 80, who died Dec. 16, 2002, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Hartford cemetery in White River Junction.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.

Winston H. Derby

Beverly R. Derby

LONDONDERRY — There will be a graveside service for Winston H. Derby and Beverly R. Wood Derby on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Riverside cemetery in Londonderry.

A reception at Flood Brook School in the cafeteria will follow the service.

Memorial contribution in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.
