Katherine E. Angell

BELLOWS FALLS — Katherine E. Angell, 95, died June 17, 2003, at Carpenter Home in Swanzey, N.H.

She was born March 12, 1908, in Bellows Falls, the daughter of Thomas and Katherine (Condon) O’Connell.

She graduated from Bellows Falls High School in 1925.

She worked for Vermont National Bank.

Survivors include a son, Donald Angell of Barrington, R.I.; two daughters, Carol Hennigan of Worcester, Mass., and Clair Grignon of New Ipswich, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Angell, in 1954; and a daughter, Jean Tyson, in 2002.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church in Bellows Falls. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery in Bellows Falls.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Visiting Nurses and Home Health Care, 1 Hospital Court, Bellows Falls, 05101.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.

Charles O. White

BENNINGTON — Charles O. White, 86, died June 17, 2003, at Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Hartford, the son of George and Etta (Hanley) White.

He received his education in the Sharon and Pomfret schools.

Mr. White worked for Bijur Lubricating for 31 years, retiring in 1981. In earlier years, he worked at the Bennington Brush Co.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.

He was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 100 in Montpelier, Putnam Hose Co. of the Bennington Fire Department for 25 years, and a member of the Bennington Rescue Squad for more than 10 years.

He enjoyed woodworking, crafting projects, hunting and fishing. Mr. White and his wife enjoyed traveling with the BMW Club on their motorcycles.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine (Marshall) White of Bennington; two daughters, Beverly LaFont of West Glover and Darlin Surdam of Bennington; four sons, Norman White, Mark White and Jeff White, all of Bennington, and William White of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Barbara DeCoff of Wilder; a brother, Richard White of Williamstown; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son Charles White; three sisters, Elizabeth Boulay, Mildred George and Beatrice Kennison; two brothers, Daniel White and Robert White; and a granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector, officiating.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or Bennington Area AIDS Project, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Inez M. Morrison

BENNINGTON — Inez M. Morrison, 101, died June 17, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born May 20, 1902, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Augustus and Caroline (Bowden) Wareham.

She received her early education in Fall River and later attended nursing school in Fall River.

She married Henry Morrison on Oct. 31, 1931. He died in 1951.

Mrs. Morrison worked as a nurse in Fall River and Pittsfield, Mass. She also worked at General Electric Co. in Pittsfield for several years.

She enjoyed all types of handwork, bowling, cribbage and walking.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Moors of Bennington and Ann Davis of Foxboro, Mass.; a son, William Morrison of Byfield, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and cousins.

The graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Pittsfield (Mass.) cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Meals on Wheels Program, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Polly S. Brigham

OAKHILL, Va. — Polly Smith Brigham, 71, of Nash Drive, in Wallingford, formerly of Brattleboro, died peacefully, Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at the Fairoaks, Va., Hospital with her family by her side.

Mrs. Brigham was born on September 25, 1931, the daughter of Melvin and Elga (Miles) Smith.

She was raised and educated in Randolph, Vt., and was a graduate of Randolph High School, Class of 1949. She went on to attend Castleton State College where she earned a B.A. in education. While at Castleton, she was the lead actress in several theatrical productions, once being hailed as a gifted actress by then visiting producer, Alfred Hitchcock.

After leaving Castleton, her first teaching position was in Derby Line, Vt., where she taught middle school. She later was employed for many years as a substitute teacher at Brattleboro Union High School, retiring from teaching in 1992.

Mrs. Brigham was a member of the Wallingford Congregational Church and a long-time member of Centre Congregational Church in Brattleboro, where for many years she served as a Sunday school teacher.

She was a member of the Maple Leaf Quilters, Daughters of the American Revolution, held membership in the Association of University Women, and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.

While her children were being raised, she was very active in the Brattleboro Parent Teachers Association and with her husband followed all high school sports.

A devoted wife and loving mother, she enjoyed time shared with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a living travel atlas, always taking an interest in her children’s travel plans, often completing extensive historical and geographical travel tips to enhance everyone’s itinerary.

Mrs. Brigham was an accomplished artist, painting in the “Grandma Moses” style.

For many years she kept a beautiful perennial garden at her home on Blakeslee Street in Brattleboro and in later years a more extensive garden at her home in Wallingford. Her other pastimes included travel and reading.

On February 20, 1956, in Newport, Vermont, she was married to Robert H. Brigham. Her husband of 45 years predeceased her in February 2001.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Brigham of Portsmouth, R.I., Peter Brigham of Oakhill, Va., and Major David Brigham of Acworth, Ga.; one daughter, Kelly Brigham McMillan of Hinsdale, N.H.; one sister, Evelyn LaGro of Bethel, Vt.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Thurlow Ferguson and Walter Ferguson; and two sisters, Elaine Sugrue and Natalie Edwards.

Graveside committal services in Pleasant View cemetery in Jericho Corners, Vt., will be held Friday, June 20, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Caskie, pastor of East Wallingford Congregational Church, officiating. On Saturday, June 21, at 10 a.m., a memorial service will be conducted at the East Wallingford Congregational Church. The Rev. Caskie will officiate the memorial service.

A Memorial Gathering for family and friends will take place Sunday, June 22, at 3 p.m., in the gardens at the Crosby House, 175 Western Avenue, in Brattleboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. Brigham’s name may be made to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 1 Marcus Blvd., Suite 203, P.O. Box 5877, Albany, N.Y., 12205.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home, 40 Terrace Street, Brattleboro.

Maurice C. Newell

SPRINGFIELD — The memorial service for Maurice C. Newell, 86, who died Jan. 20, 2003, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Christ Church in Saxtons River. Burial will follow in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Ida M. Rousseau

ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. — The funeral service for Ida Mary (Breslend) Rousseau, who died Oct. 16, 2002, will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Episcopal Church in Bellows Falls, Vt. Burial will follow in Immanuel Episcopal Churchyard.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Visiting Nurses and Home Health Care, 1 Hospital Court, Bellows Falls, Vt., 05101.

Robert H. Ostrander

GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Robert Henry Ostrander, 74, died June 16, 2003, at York Hospital in York, Maine.

He was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Bennington, Vt., the son of Charles and Caroline (Grant) Ostrander.

He graduated from Bennington High School in 1946.

He married Ann Kelley on June 22, 1949.

Mr. Ostrander was the manager of the A&P Store and later worked for Grand Union in Granville. After his retirement, he worked at the Granville Pharmacy for a time.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He enjoyed carpentry, woodcrafting and camping.

Survivors include his wife of Granville; two sons, Robert Ostrander of Bellows Falls, Vt., and Bruce Ostrander of Queensbury; two daughters, Holly Ostrander-Hanslin of Grantham, N.H., and Trina Shellenberger of Wells, Maine; and four grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington with the Rev. Mary Lee-Clark, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Park Lawn cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

A time of fellowship will take place in Webster Hall at the church following the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, Vt., 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Thomas L. Corcoran

WALTHAM — Thomas Leo Corcoran, 59, died June 15, 2003.

He was born Feb. 23, 1944, in Montclair, N.J., the son of Leo and Ethel (Fischer) Corcoran.

He married Donna Hunt in 1972.

Mr. Corcoran worked on the family farm for many years. He worked for the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union school district as a custodian and bus driver for the past 17 years.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathleen and Eileen; a son, Luther; two sisters, Patricia Merrigan and Eileen Humphrey; nieces and nephews.

The memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Vergennes.

Friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the VUES After-School Program, in care of Vergennes Union Elementary School, 43 East St., Vergennes, 05491.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Gertrude S. Gulick

SPRINGFIELD — The memorial service for Gertrude S. Gulick, who died Jan. 30, 2003, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Springfield.

A picnic reception will be held at the family homestead on Parker Hill Road following the service.
