Anna B. Gladding

BRISTOL — Anna Boynton Gladding, 92, died July 15, 2003, at her home.

She was born April 4, 1911, in Bristol.

She graduated from Bristol High School and Wheelock College in Boston.

Mrs. Gladding managed all the kindergartens in Vermont under the WPA Program during the early 1940s.

She was active in the Bristol Federated Church, Ladies Aid Society, Outlook Club and the Bristol Historical Society.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Howard Gladding; a daughter, Eleanor Hoehn of Marshfield, Mass.; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Bristol Federated Church. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Project Independence, 27 North Pleasant St., Middlebury, 05753, or Addison County Home, Health and Hospice, Middlebury, 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.

Elizabeth Blake

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. — Elizabeth “Betty” Blake, 92, of Venderheyden Street, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2003, at the Fort Hudson Health Care Facility in Fort Edward following a long illness.

Born on February 5, 1911, in Kingsbury, she was the daughter of the late Nelson and Agnes (Homes) Dewey.

On October 6, 1929, she married Charles Merrill Blake at the Church of the Holy Cross in Warrensburg.

Mrs. Blake was employed at Cutshall Dry Cleaners in Glens Falls for many years.

She was a member of the Church of the Messiah in Glens Falls and also belonged to the Order of the Amaranth.

Mrs. Blake was predeceased by her husband, Charles Blake; three sons, Robert N. Blake, Donald W. Blake and Allen “Allie” Blake; a brother, Allen Dewey; and three sisters, Helen Dewey, May Smith and Arabell Pasineau.

Survivors include three sons, Charles M. Blake and his wife Judy of Shoreham, Vermont, Gary F. Blake and his wife Jana of Fort Edward, and Darrell L. Blake and his wife Donna of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Alberta Blake of Hudson Falls; 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At Mrs. Blake’s request, there will be no calling hours.

Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Zion Episcopal Church in Hudson Falls with the Rev. Wayne Bower, rector, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be made to Fort Hudson Health Care Facility, Upper Broadway, Fort Edward, N.Y., 12828.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Carleton Funeral Home, Inc., 68 Main Street, in Hudson Falls.

Samuel Kapitan

PROCTOR — Samuel Kapitan, 77, died July 28, 2003, at his home.

He was born in West Rutland, Dec. 19, 1925, the son of Daniel and Helen (Karamal) Kapitan.

He attended Proctor schools, and was a World War II U.S. Marine veteran stationed in Okinawa and serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.

Mr. Kapitan was self-employed as an excavator before his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting and gardening.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Fish) Trepanier Kapitan of Proctor; five daughters, Sandi Cocklin and Barbara Thompson of Florida, Kathy Griffin and Janet Moritz of Rutland, and Sharon Massey of South Carolina; four sisters, Helen Schako of New Hampshire, Anne Prescott of Florida, Irene Hanson and Emma Kapitan, both of New Jersey; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a stepson, Joseph Trepanier; a grandson, Shawn Cocklin; two sisters, Mary Pacore and Lillian Suhoke; and four brothers, Dan Kapitan, Charles Kapitan, Michael Kapitan and Julius Kapitan.

The funeral will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Russ Gates, pastor of the Union Church in Proctor.

Burial will follow in South Street cemetery in Proctor.

Visiting hours are Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Monsignor Paul M. Bresnehan Rites

Funeral services for Monsignor Paul M. Bresnehan, 75, a former resident of Proctor and a former pastor of St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor, who died July 23, 2003, in Rutland were held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor. Officiating was The Most Rev. Louis R. Gelineau, D.D., retired Bishop of Providence, R.I. Concelebrants were The Most Rev. Kenneth A. Angell, D.D., Bishop of Burlington, Rev. Wendall Searles, Rev. Richard Tinney, Rev. Francis Holland, Rev. Edward Moore, Rev. William Beaudin, Rev. Joseph Pray, Rev. Charles D’Avignon, Rev. Roland Rivard, Rev. Frank Warzocha and the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor of St. Dominic’s Church.

Organist and choir master was Kevin Parizo for the church choir. Mary Jo Knapp was soloist.

Readers were Eileen O’Rourke and Patricia Commeau and Maureen Dobart.

The Gospel and Homily was by Rev. Francis Holland.

The Offertory Procession was by Anne Ladabouche, Pamela Smith, Margaret Vincent and Megan Bresnehan.

The Placement of the Pall on the casket was by Margaret Young, Jeanne Pease and Mary Perkins.

Ministers of the Altar were Robert Coons, Bill Taranovich and Leo Pomainville.

Acolyte was Domenico Champine.

Ushers were Charles Shostak and William Frazier.

Words of Remembrance were by Monsignor’s brother, John Bresnehan.

Bearers were Timothy Curtis, Michael O’Rourke, Dave Erkson, Dan O’Rourke, Patrick Bresnehan, and John Temple.

Honorary bearers were Knights of Columbus 4th Degree under the direction of David Murray, Faithful Navigator. Members were Lional Cloutier, Marcel Latour, Bill Collins, Marcel Audet, Rene Poirier, Dave Brookman and Gene Poplawski.

Burial was in St. Dominic’s cemetery with The Most Rev. Bishop Kenneth A. Angell and The Most Rev. Bishop Louis R. Gelineau reading the prayers of the burial service.

A service was held in the church on Monday at 11 a.m.

The Clifford Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

B. Unice Howe

POULTNEY — B. Unice Howe, 88, died July 28, 2003.

Arrangements are pending under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Clesson Hayes

FOREST DALE — Clesson “Ted” Hayes, 83, died July 28, 2003, at his home in Brandon.

The funeral service is scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church in Forest Dale.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Kathleen F. Bendis

WOODSTOCK — Kathleen F. Bendis, 55, died July 21, 2003, in Woodstock.

She was born on Dec. 12, 1947, in Novelty, Ohio, the daughter of Michael and Sophie (Barle) Pribanic. She was a graduate of Chagrin Falls (Ohio) High School and attended Kent State University.

She and her husband, Jeffrey Bendis, to whom she was married for 29 years, had moved from Lyndhurst, Ohio, to Woodstock in July 2000.

Mrs. Bendis worked for many years at Associated Estates Corp., beginning as a rental agent while still in college and eventually serving as an executive secretary and administrative assistant.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening, antiques, reading and her pet cats.

She was an avid antique dealer and collector. She also designed, planted and tended the gardens at Wigren-Barlow Antiques in Woodstock.

Survivors include her mother; two brothers, Mark Pribanic of Lakewood, Ohio, and Ronald Pribanic of Macedonia, Ohio; four nieces; a nephew; and a grand niece.

A memorial service will be held in the gardens of Wigren-Barlow on Sunday at 4 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lucy MacKenzie Humane Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home.

Mary Lou Shumski

SPRINGFIELD — Mary Lou Shumski, 64, died July 27, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 2, 1938, in Springfield, the daughter of John and Pauline (Tarbell) Thurber.

She attended schools in Springfield and graduated from Springfield High School in 1957.

On April 11, 1959, she married Stanley J. Shumski in Springfield. She was a lifelong resident of the community, and for the past few years much of her time was devoted to caring for her sister.

Her hobbies included gardening, cooking and doing crafts.

Survivors include a son, Michael J. Shumski of Springfield; a daughter, Penny A. Laflamme of Springfield; her former husband, Stanley J. Shumski of Springfield; two grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Thurber of Springfield; three brothers, John Thurber and James Thurber, both of Springfield, and David Thurber of North Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Oakland cemetery. The Rev. William E. Nelson, pastor of the First Congregational Church, will officiate.

There are no visiting hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Memorial Chapel.

Sarah P. Snide

SPRINGFIELD — Sarah P. Snide, 88, a former resident of the Whitcomb Building, died July 27, 2003, at Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.

She was born July 22, 1915, in Springfield, the daughter of Frederick and Fanny (Juckett) Chase.

She attended Springfield public schools and had been a lifelong resident of the community.

On Nov. 22, 1930, she married Harvey Snide in Springfield.

For many years she worked at the Margolin Pocketbook Factory in Brattleboro, and later as a sales representative for the Spencer Corp. of New Haven, Conn. Later she worked as a cook at several institutions, including the Hilton House in Chester, the Douschein School of Music in Weston, and at the Cutler Convalescent Home in Springfield.

Mrs. Snide was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Women of the Moose 1085, Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Columbia Rebekah Lodge. She was a former member and past master of the Bartonsville Grange, and she also belonged to the National Grange.

Survivors include three sons, Paul A. Snide of Littleton, Colo., Robert R. Snide Sr. of Springfield and Larry E. Snide of Bellows Falls; two daughters, Dorothy R. Stearns of Springfield and Patricia A. Hardy of Naples, Fla.; a sister, Roselyn St. Louis of South Burlington; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1972; a son, Frederic E. Snide; two brothers, Henry Chase and Louis Chase; and a sister, Ella Stevenson.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. William Beaudin, pastor of the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View cemetery in Chester.

Friends may call at the Davis Chapel today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gill Odd Fellows Home, Gill Terrace, Ludlow, 05149.
