Marlene J. Dirga Rites

GRANVILLE, N.Y. - A prayer service for Marlene J. "Molly" Dirga, 61, who died Dec. 28, 2003, was held Wednesday at the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester Center.

It was followed by a Mass at St. Mary's Church in Granville. The Rev. Thomas Zelker officiated.

Burial followed in North Hebron cemetery.

Organist was Louise Tatko.

Pallbearers were Andrew Dirga, Peter Craig, Daniel Raymond, Richard Smith, Charlie Dorr and Wayne King.

Francis W. Johnson Sr.

WEST RUTLAND - Francis W. Johnson Sr., 76, died Jan. 1, 2004, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was the husband of Rosemary (Dwyer) Johnson, who died in 1999.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland.

Martin Mead Sr.

POULTNEY - Martin (Ronnie) Mead Sr., 66, died Dec. 31, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born Aug. 18, 1937, in Raceville, N.Y., the son of Martin and Catherine (Payne) Mead.

He worked at J.R. Loomis Trucking in Pawlet as a tractor-trailer driver.

Mr. Mead enjoyed restoring and driving antique cars and recycling scrap metal.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Mead, whom he married on Sept. 16, 1955; three sons, Terry Mead of Middle Granville, N.Y., Martin Mead Jr. and Ricky Mead, both of Poultney; nine daughters, Tina Mead and Robin Loomis, both of Middle Granville, N.Y., Melony Johnson and Sandra McGraw, both of Granville, N.Y., Garnet Matteson and Sylvia Mount, both of Poultney, Margurette Bullock of Pawlet; Rhonda Hein of Wells and Violet Hyatt of Fort Ann, N.Y.; 46 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents.

The funeral service will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Arthur Ritchie, pastor of Raceville Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Lake View cemetery in Hubbardton.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the family, 119 Jones Road, Poultney, 05764.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney.

Judith A. Narabone

DONALDS, S.C. - Judith Ann Waite Narabone, 53, died Dec. 23, 2003, at the Hospice House in Anderson.

She was born in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Adaline (Fernette) and Edward Waite.

She was retired from the Torrington Co.

Survivors include her mother of Brandon, Vt.; a son, Francis Narabone Jr. of Donalds; a daughter, Dawn Nicholson of Donalds; two brothers, Robert Waite of Rutland and Donald Waite of Brandon; and five grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Narabone Sr.; and her father.

The memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Porter Healthcare Rehabilitation in Middlebury, Vt., with Chaplain Lucy Pellegrini officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Pruitt Funeral Home in Honea Path.

Ronald J. Finn

WATERFORD, N.Y. - Ronald J. Finn, 70, died Dec. 31, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Watervliet, the son of John and Gertrude (Matthews) Finn.

He attended Watervliet schools, and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Finn worked as a meat cutter at the A&P Stores in Watervliet, Latham and Wynantskill for more than 40 years, retiring 11 years ago.

He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford.

Survivors include his stepmother, Dorothy Finn; a son, Ronald Finn of Chittenden, Vt.; a daughter, Diane Hardy of Waterford; a brother, Robert Finn of Troy; a stepbrother, Thomas Tansi and stepsister, Linda Clark, both of Watervliet; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Rose (Lanzillo) Finn in 1991; three brothers, Jack, Paul and Bill Finn; a sister, Carol Geary; and a stepsister, Patricia Foster.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Burial will follow in St. Mary's cemetery in Waterford.

There will be no calling hours.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cummings Funeral Home in Watervliet.

Elaine M. Clark

A funeral Mass for Elaine M. Clark, 85, who died Dec. 30, 2003, at her home, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home.

Florence Alexander Rites

BURLINGTON - The funeral service for Florence Alexander, 68, formerly of West Rutland, who died Dec. 29, 2003, was held Thursday at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Rutland.

Father Nicanor Kutelas, parish priest, officiated. Entombment followed in Evergreen cemetery in Rutland, with burial to take place there at a later date.

Cantor was George Palantios.

Bearers were Nick Louras and James Anagnos.

A prayer service was offered Wednesday at the Clifford Funeral Home by Father Kutelas.

Elizabeth H. Owers

NORWICH - Elizabeth H. Owers, 86, a former resident of Dorset, died Dec. 30, 2003, at her home.

She was born in 1917 in Oconomowoc, Wis., the daughter of Roy and Gladys Henszey.

She graduated from Swarthmore College in 1938.

She was married to James Owers Sr.

She was one of the founders of the Lac Labelle Yacht Club in Oconomowoc, and served on many boards while living in Dorset.

Mrs. Owers was a sailor and skater, and an avid reader.

Survivors include a son, James Owers of Concord, N.H.; a brother, Richard Henszey of Oconomowoc; a daughter, Susan Haedrich of St. John's, Newfoundland; and four grandchildren.

There will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Alliance of Vermont and New Hampshire, 46 S. Main St., White River Junction, 05001.

Jeannette A. Cossette

SPRINGFIELD - Jeannette A. Cossette, 84, died Dec. 31, 2003, at Springfield Hospital.

She was born Sept. 13, 1919, in St. Narcisse, Quebec, the daughter of Lucien and Dora (Veillette) Cossette.

She received her education in Canada.

She moved to Springfield in 1948 and worked as a waitress and hostess for the Paddock Restaurant for more than 38 years, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, the Springfield Senior Citizens and RSVP.

Survivors include her companion, Alice Lapre of Springfield; a brother, Joel Cossette of St. Narcisse; a half sister, Huquette Richer of Ville-St. Piene, Montreal; two nieces and two nephews.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Springfield with the Rev. Peter Williams, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place at a later date in St. Mary's cemetery in Springfield.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Anne, 40 Summer St., Springfield, 05156, or Holy Family Catholic School, 88 Pleasant St., Springfield, 05156.

Delbert J. Bullock

WINDHAM - Delbert J. Bullock, 77, of Corn Hill Road, died peacefully at home on the morning of December 31, 2003, with his family by his side. Del survived two and one-half years with metastatic bladder cancer. He was born on August 25, 1926, in Schenectady, New York, to Joseph R. Bullock and Beatrice Pearson. After the death of his mother and his father's remarriage to Mary Greene, the family moved to Berlin, New York in 1935. There he attended Berlin Central School, graduating in 1944. Del loved the landscape, the people and the small town life of Berlin. Throughout his life, he captivated family and friends with vivid stories of those years. At age 20, he joined the Merchant Marines, sailing aboard Liberty Ships from 1946 to 1948 delivering horses and cattle to Africa. His travels took him to Egypt, Morocco and Greece, beginning a lifelong affinity for the Mediterranean. Del attended Hobart College in Geneva, New York, graduating in 1954. He completed some graduate coursework in history at Syracuse University.

Mr. Bullock was married to Audrey Dennett from 1952 to 1965, and had three daughters. In 1978, he married Alison R. Schantz in Solvay, New York, and had a son. Mr. Bullock was employed as an elementary school teacher in Tribes Hill and Chittenango Station, New York, taught middle and high school in Skaneateles and Syracuse, New York, and taught emotionally disturbed children at Fairmount Children's Center in Solvay, New York. He retired in 1982 to attend the Wendell Castle Workshop in Rochester, New York, where he studied fine woodworking. He and Alison moved to Vermont in 1989.

Del was a man of broad and intense interests, including sailing, skiing during the early days of the sport, fishing, mycology, photography, classical music and the visual arts. He was a member of the Northern Lake George Yacht Club and the Rochester Area Mycological Association. He was a curious man with a passion for reading and learning, and educated himself throughout his life on topics ranging from fine boatbuilding to philosophy, classical literature, historiography and language. Del cared deeply about education, and served on the Leland and Gray High School Board in recent years. He was a vocal advocate for justice and environmental protection.

Del is survived by Alison Schantz, his wife of 25 years, who cared lovingly for him during his illness. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Dickinson of Contoocook, N.H.; daughters, Pamela, Emily and Kathryn of the Brattleboro, Vt., area; son, Brendan of Santa Fe, N.M.; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, father, sister Beatrice Subt and brother Robert Bullock.

A celebration of Del's life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2004, at West Street Arts on West Street in West Dummerston, Vermont, from 2 to 5 p.m. The Reverend Thaddeus Bennett will officiate. Friends may send donations in Del's memory to the Yellow Barn Music School and Festival, 63 Main Street, Putney, Vt., 05346. Del's ashes will be scattered following a private family ceremony in June 2004. Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

Edward T. Belville

POWNAL - Edward Thomas "Shorty" Belville, 74, died Dec. 30, 2003, at the home of his daughter.

He was born June 22, 1929, in North Adams, Mass., the son of George and Mabel (Crawford) Belville.

He attended Oak Hill School in Pownal.

He married Beverly Alderman on May 4, 1956, in Berlin, N.Y.

Mr. Belville worked on the family farm, as a logger for Ted Browe, and at the Pownal Tannery.

He enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, hunting, fishing and walking.

Survivors include his mother of Ashboro, N.C.; his wife of North Pownal; four sons, Timothy Belville of Bennington, Terry Belville and Michael Belville, both of Pownal, and Rodney Belville of Shaftsbury; four daughters, Deborah Burdick and Brenda Belville, both of Pownal, and Cheri Osgood and Bonnie Bentley, both of North Pownal; a brother, Jerry Belville of Asheboro, N.C.; a sister, Sharon Sweet of Pownal; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, Lee Belville in 1993; and two brothers, Lawrence and George Belville.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Area Hospice, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.
