Marshall H. Hoagland

MIDDLEBURY — Marshall Herbert Hoagland, 77, died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, after a long illness.

He was born Oct. 6, 1926, in Bradford County, Pa., the son of Joseph and Velma (Wilcox) Hoagland.

He spent his childhood in the Elmira-Horseheads area of New York, and graduated from East Elmira High School in 1942.

After attending Wheaton College in Illinois for one year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served for two years in the Occupation Forces in Germany. He then entered Bob Jones University in Greensboro, S.C., graduating in 1952.

He and his first wife, Willa, spent two years teaching in Alaska in the small fishing village of Hoonah. He later received a master’s degree in education administration in 1955. He taught seventh- and eighth-grade grade English for the next 26 years in Hartsdale, N.Y., and at the MacArthur Barr Middle School in Nanuet, N.Y. After retiring from teaching, he worked for 10 years as manager of a bookstore and mailroom for the Fellowship of Reconciliation, an international, interfaith peace organization in Nyack, N.Y.

He was a feature writer and play reviewer for the Rockland (N.Y.) Review, and once interviewed Rosa Parks.

In 1985, he married Jessica Jones Rathan, whom he met at an international folk dance class. In 1993, Mr. and Mrs. Hoagland retired to Middlebury. He was active in the Middlebury Friends Meeting and was instrumental in helping the first Bosnian families get settled in the Middlebury area. He served on the Pine Meadow Interfaith Board for several years, four of those as president. He volunteered as a docent at the Henry Sheldon Museum and worked on the revision of Glen Andres’ book, “Walking History.”

Mr. Hoagland enjoyed reading, especially mysteries, gardening, and the history of Addison County.

He spent the last year and a half of his life with Alice and Chuck Barnum and their four children, Mallory, Carlie, Cody and Jamie, all of New Haven.

Survivors include his wife, Jessica Hoagland of Middlebury; two sons, David Hoagland of Winslow, Maine, and Jamie Hoagland of Clifton, N.J.; two daughters, Joi Hoagland of Stoney Point, N.Y., and Dawn Hoagland of Nanuet, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Christine Bray of Sloatsburg, N.Y., and Suzanne Sommer of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; aunts; and cousins.

A Quaker-style service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Stephen’s Church in Middlebury.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Elderly Services Inc. or Hospice Volunteer Service in Middlebury.

Madeline Ryder Rites

BRANDON — The funeral service for Madeline Reed Ryder, 91, who died Oct. 4, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. Arnet Mathers, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Rutland, officiated. The graveside committal service and burial followed in Forest Dale cemetery.

Pallbearers were Brian Niles, Richard Niles, Nathan Ryder and Mike Goodspeed.

Following the service, a reception was held at the home of Mrs. Ryder’s daughter, Lois Niles.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Madeline Haley Rites

PROCTOR — The funeral service for Madeline Victoria Haley, 90, who died Oct. 4, 2003, was held Tuesday at St. Dominic’s Church in Proctor with the Rev. Joseph Romano, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in South Street cemetery in Proctor, with the Rev. Romano reading the prayers of the burial service.

Margaret Curtis was organist. Mary Jo Knapp was vocalist. Reader was Mary Tisdale. Words of remembrance were offered by Sean Ward.

Pallbearers were Sean Ward, Christopher War, Erin Ward, Mark Tisdale, Matthew Tisdale, Michael Haley and Daniel Haley, all grandchildren.

Prayer services were held Monday at the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Romano.

Delphine E. Hewey

CAVENDISH — Delphine E. Hewey, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003, at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.

She was born March 12, 1929, in Cavendish, the daughter of W. Irving and Myra (Belknap) Hewey.

She was raised and educated in Cavendish. She was a member of the Cavendish Baptist Church and sang in the choir. She was also a member of Mytle Rebekah Lodge 6 in Proctorsville.

She moved to Rutland in 1979.

She enjoyed reading, television and newspapers.

Survivors include a brother, Ira Hewey of Greenfield, Mass.; two sisters, Deborah Pitts of Rutland and Isabelle Briggs of Cavendish; a niece; and a nephew.

A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Cavendish Village cemetery.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Cavendish Baptist Church, 2258 Main St., Cavendish, 05142.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.

Judith H. Newell

BETHEL — Judith H. Newell, 48, of Bethel died Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

She was born March 1, 1955, in Randolph, the daughter of Lucian “Jun” and Mildred (Angwin) Hunt.

She grew up in Stockbridge, graduating from Whitcomb High School in Bethel in 1973.

She married Bruce Newell on June 30, 1979, in Stockbridge.

She worked through high school at Tozier’s Restaurant, then as a reservation clerk at Killington. She also worked for Clifford of Vermont and operated a home daycare center, prior to working for Vermont Castings in Bethel.

Mrs. Newell enjoyed camping and snowmobiling.

Survivors include her husband, Bruce Newell of Bethel; four sons, Lance Newell of Honolulu, Hawaii, Daniel Newell, serving with the U.S. Army in Missouri, Christopher Newell and Matthew Newell, both of Bethel; her mother, Mildred Hunt, a brother, Jeffrey Hunt, and a sister, Janet Rose Whitaker, all of Stockbridge; and nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Bethel with the Rev. Dr. Claire Bamberg officiating. Burial will be private in Woodlawn cemetery in Rochester.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Research Fund, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H., 03756.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Paul Raftery Rites

ARLINGTON — The funeral service for Paul P. Raftery, 95, who died Oct. 4, 2003, was held Tuesday at St. Margaret Mary’s Church in Arlington with the Rev. George Dupuis officiating. Burial followed in St. Columban’s cemetery in Arlington.

Pallbearers were Robert Covey Jr., Robert Long, William Wolfe and Kenneth Coonradt.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Arlington Chapel.

Arthur Stocker Rites

LUDLOW — The funeral service for Arthur Stocker, 77, who died Oct. 3, 2003, was held Tuesday at St. James Methodist Church in Proctorsville with the Rev. Kathryn Tobey and Earl Bishop officiating. Burial followed in Cavendish Village cemetery.

Soloist and organist was Delores Flack. Rolfe VanSchaik gave the eulogy.

Pallbearers were Mr. Stocker’s grandchildren, Kerri Baccari, Marco Baccari, David Vachon, Eric Stocker, Thomas Stocker and Sheri Stocker.

A reception was held at the Proctorsville Fire Hall following the burial.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.

Mildred Wright Rites

SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Mildred M. Wright, 86, who died Oct. 4, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield with the Rev. Harry Peatt of Perkinsville officiating. Burial followed in North Street cemetery in Chester.

Pallbearers were John Blais II, Guy Lariviere, Dustin Miller, Nate Moore, and Mike Gibson.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

George T. Eddy

NAPLES, Idaho — George T. Eddy, 77, died June 30, 2003.

He was born Dec. 1, 1925, in West Rutland, Vt., the son of Warren and Ada Eddy.

The family moved to Idaho in 1946.

He married Jean Lamberson on Oct. 2, 1948, in Libby, Mont.

Survivors include a son, Randal Eddy of Oregon; two daughters, Tessie Kramer of Naples and Stacey Stephens of Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a nephew.

He was predeceased by a son, Shane Eddy; two brothers, Ernest Eddy and Bill Eddy; and two sisters, Ella Manley and Beatrice Jeppeson.

Services were held Saturday, July 5, 2003, at Stampede Lake, south of Naples. Burial was in Moravia cemetery in Bonners Ferry.

George P. Bell

George Percy Bell, 64, passed away Tuesday, December 2, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

George was born December 29, 1938, in Beebe, Quebec, Canada, the only child of Percy and Virginia Bell. On August 30, 1958, George married Jeannette Dae Burke after relocating to Rutland with Jeannette and her family where he retired in 1994 after 33 years with Moore Business Forms.

George enjoyed his grandchildren, his family, spending time at his camp, and his many friends. He was a member of the Italian Aid Society, the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1122, Rochester's Masonic Rural Lodge 29 F&AM, Order of the Eastern Star Gilman Chapter 88, and the National Rifle Association.

George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jeannette, and three daughters and families: Terry Bell Lary, husband Zeus Lary and children, Dane and Anna of Rochester; Sandy Bell Rhoades, husband Dennis Rhoades and children, Joshua and Nikita of Rochester; Cindy Bell Sargeant, husband Crosby Sargeant and children, Natalie and Ian of Rutland.

A gathering of friends in remembrance of George's life will be held Saturday at 4 p.m., December 6, 2003, at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Friends may call Saturday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions may be made in George's memory to the Community Cancer Center at RRMC, 160 Allen Street, Rutland, Vt., 05701.

Brian D. Schaner

The memorial service for Brian D. Schaner, 43, of Rutland, who died Nov. 28, 2003, will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Caroline B. Sousie Rites

The memorial service for Caroline Betty Sousie, 67, of Rutland, who died Dec. 1, 2003, was held Wednesday at the Aldous Funeral Home. The Rev. T. Daniel VanLuven, pastor of Roadside Chapel Assembly of God, officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland County Humane Society Inc., P.O. Box 558, Pittsford, 05763, or the Salvation Army, The Rutland Corps, P.O. Box 122, Rutland, 05701-0122.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Catherine A. Grazini Rites

The funeral Mass for Catherine A. Grazini, 84, of Rutland, who died Nov. 29, 2003, was celebrated Wednesday at Christ the King Church in Rutland with the Rev. Reid Mayo, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in St. Joseph cemetery.

Organist was Sister Pauline Gratton and vocalist was Sister Francis Patrick.

Prayer services were held Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home by members of American Legion Post 31 Auxiliary and the Rev. Reid Mayo.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
