Beth Ann Wimble

July 11, 2002

Beth Ann Wimble, 40, of Waitsfield passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Tuesday, July 9, 2002, following a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Montpelier on November 30, 1961, she was the daughter of Cedric C. and Dolly (Norris) Reagan. On October 8, 1988, she married Owen Wimble Jr. in Waitsfield.

Beth was a 1979 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury and continued her education, graduating from O'Brien's School of Cosmetology in 1980. She was employed as a hairdresser for Klip and Kurl in Waitsfield before pursuing a career as a bookkeeper, working for Valley Paint and Glass and Kenyon's Variety Store, both of Waitsfield. Beth was later employed by the state of Vermont in Buildings & General Services where she served as a supervisor for public records.

Most recently, Beth worked in Waterbury for the state Agency of Aging and Disabilities, a job (and people) she loved.

Beth was a member of the Waitsfield United Church of Christ. Her leisure time was spent playing softball, bowling, going for long walks, summer family vacations at Old Orchard Beach, Hampton Beach and camping on Woodbury Pond. She took particular pleasure in listening to her father's tales, and the Christmas season. She lived and loved life to its fullest.

Beth is survived by her husband of Waitsfield; their daughter and love of her life, Lacey A. Wimble of Waitsfield; her parents of Moretown; two stepsons, Chris Wimble and his wife, Nicole or Waterbury Center and Jeffrey Wimble and his wife, Dawn of Waterbury; two grandchildren, Kyle and Trace Wimble of Waterbury Center; two sisters, Denise Gabaree and her husband, Joe of Moretown, and Rebecca Zinn and her husband, Wally of Waitsfield; a brother, Dale Reagan and his wife, Rae of Moretown; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Friday, July 12, at 10:00 a.m. There will be no calling hours. Interment will take place in the Waitsfield Common cemetery.

The family requests that flowers be omitted, that rather, contributions be made in Beth's memory to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, PO Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673-0305, to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, VT 05602-3021, or to the American Diabetes Assoc., Vermont Memorial Processing Center, PO Box 31160, Hartford, Connecticut 06150-1160.

Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Herbert F. Starck

July 3, 2002

Herbert F. Starck, 71, of Moretown passed away in Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Wednesday, June 26, 2002.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on November 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Frederick and Katharina (Behrmann) Starck.

In 1968, Herbert married the former Joan Brokenshire in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

A graduate of Ramsey (New Jersey) High School, Herbert continued his education at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree.

An entrepreneur, Herbert founded Valley Transportation, a school bus leasing company that he operated in Saddle River, New Jersey and Pearl River, New York for many years.

Moving to Vermont in 1969, and settling in Moretown in 1973, Herbert was a rural route carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Moretown for 17 years. He and his wife also operated the summer horseback riding camp for children at their Navajo Farm in Moretown.

Following his retirement from the postal service, Herbert was a bus driver for Harwood Union High School in Duxbury.

While living in New Jersey, he was a former member and chief of the Upper Saddle River Volunteer Fire Department.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 34 years, Joan Starck of Moretown; three daughters, Amy Bergamo of Bethel, Laurie Balgeman of Lyle, Minnesota and Gigi Condict of Duxbury; a son Dean Zoecklein of North Fayston; 13 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister, Rosemarie Gibson of Sparks, Colorado and a niece.

Funeral services were held from the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Monday, July 1, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Vermont Memorial Processing Center, PO Box 31160, Hartford, Connecticut 06150-1160.

Preston H. Peters

June 27, 2002

Preston H. Peters of Falls Village, Connecticut and Waitsfield died June 8, 2002 after a short bout with cancer.

Born on June 27, 1938 in Connecticut, Preston attended schools there and graduated from Saint Marks Academy. After completing his military service in Europe, he entered Colgate, later transferring and graduating from Columbia University in 1961.

He then began a career in advertising in New York City, married and began raising his daughter Jorie. Preston loved the outdoors, good food, friends, scuba diving, sailing, skiing and flying. He will be remembered for his humor on and off the slopes, sense of fun, wit, love of "a deal" and his joy for flying. He began soaring with Sugarbush Soaring Association and then moved on to power. He was a familiar face at the Berlin Airport and was happiest piloting his plane between clouds and sharing the experience with his friends.

Preston found a new and welcoming community in Falls Village, Connecticut in the 1990s, but continued his connection with The Valley, visiting regularly and maintaining an apartment at "Green Acers."

Preston is survived by his daughter, Marjorie Peters of Alexandria, Virginia and cousin Anne Hodgson of Cambridge, Massachusetts. A memorial celebration of his life was held in Falls Village on June 15, 2002.

Preston enjoyed his life, relishing in all its pleasures. His spirit and sense of fun will be greatly missed.

Gilbert James Maxwell

June 27, 2002

Gilbert James Maxwell, 75, died Tuesday morning, June 25 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. He was born November 20, 1926 in Waitsfield, the son of Martin and Blanche (Longe) Maxwell.

He attended school in Waitsfield. He worked for a time in the woods as a logger and later at Bowen Hunter's Mill, then Weyerhaeuser (now Chesapeake in Hancock) and later at Granville Manufacturing. Gilbert married Rebecca "Becky" Kenison in Granville on October 31, 1987. He retired in 1988 from the Vermont Department of Transportation where he drove truck for over 21 years.

He was a fifty-two year member of the Moss Glen Grange #554 in Granville. He enjoyed farming, sugaring, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of Granville; a son, Steve Maxwell of Hancock; a daughter, Karen Maxwell Arnold, of Granville; a stepson, Irving Davis of East Braintree; four stepdaughters, Shari Friedman of Grafton, New Hampshire; Linda Tatro of Bristol; Lori Finkle of Hartford; Charlene Waite of Granville; twin granddaughters, Lona Maxwell of Hancock; Amanda Maxwell Wheeler of Graniteville; two grandsons, Clyde (Duke) Maxwell and Steve Arnold, both of Granville; two step-grandsons, Michael Friedman of Alton, New Hampshire; Russell Finkle of Hartford; three step-granddaughters, Heidi Friedman of Great Lakes , Illinois, Elizabeth Finkle of Hartford; Crystal Waite of Granville; three brothers, Milford Maxwell, of White River Jct., Elliott Maxwell of Springfield, Oliver Maxwell of Randolph, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a son, Larry E. Maxwell, who died March 30, 1999.

Friends may call Thursday evening, June 27, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea. A graveside service will be held Friday at 1:00 p.m. in the Irasville cemetery in Waitsfield with the Reverend Kurt Sheffert officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Valley Rescue Squad, 227 Route 100, Hancock, Vermont 05748.

Barry Davis Merritt

June 20, 2002

Barry Davis Merritt, 51, died June 15, 2002, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

He was born April 20, 1951 in Albany, Georgia.

He graduated from high school in Princeton, New Jersey in 1970 and from Mitchell College in Rhode Island and attended the University of Miami.

Mr. Merritt was self-employed at the Merritt Family Sugar House on South Hill Road in Moretown.

He was a member of the Vermont Maple Sugar Association. He enjoyed hockey, skiing, hiking, tennis and sugaring.

Survivors include five children: Sarah Merritt of Plainfield, Fred Dezan of Barre, Lauren Merritt of Moretown, Jeremiah Dezan of Waitsfield and Abigail Merritt of Barre; his mother of Princeton; and a brother Michael Merritt of Boulder, Colorado.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Moretown Methodist Church in Moretown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allenbrook Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495. Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

Marion Conger Barton Gove

June 20, 2002

Marion Conger Barton Gove of Moretown, 87, passed away at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center in Berlin, where she resided for the past three years, on June 17, 2002.

Born in Georgia, Vermont on April 29, 1915, she was the daughter of the late George Parker Conger and Grace (Boomhower) Conger and great-granddaughter of the courageous Captain George Parker Conger, First Vermont Calvary, the Civil War hero who led the counterattack and captured the leader of Morgan's Raiders following the St. Albans Raid on October 17, 1864.

Marion was educated in the one-room school adjacent to her father's farm in Georgia and attended high school in St. Albans before graduating from a two-year teacher's training course at Johnson Normal School in 1935.

On February 2, 1936, she married Lester Arden Barton who predeceased her on September 5, 1972. Lester owned a three truck logging company. He suffered an accident while loading logs and as a result was partially disabled. Lester was also the road commissioner for Fayston and Waitsfield, as well as owning Barton's Homelite Chainsaws for 16 years.

Following Lester's accident, Marion obtained her teaching certificate and taught for two years in a rural one-room school in Fayston, grades one through eight, and elementary grades in Waitsfield for 17 years, retiring with great honors. She received a bachelor's degree from UVM in 1969. After her retirement she was the librarian for the Joslin Memorial Library in Waitsfield for many years.

Marion's hobbies included horseback riding, gardening, and family genealogical research, having searched all the Vermont Vital Statistics for Congers. Her work was published in 1972 as part of a collection of genealogies of the Conger Family of America with a copy in the National Archives. She also loved crocheting and created many lovely pieces of handiwork over the years.

Marion married long-time friend and companion, Robert W. Gove on August 28, 2000.

Bob was well known as an avid horseman and animal lover. He also loved to sing and was a great storyteller, appearing in the Valley Players' variety shows. He passed away February 22, 2001 at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center.

She is survived by two sisters, Irene Cross of Burlington and Mrs Kenneth (Doris) Lemnah of Englewood, Florida; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard Arden (and Bonita Rae) Barton Sr., of Waitsfield, and a daughter and son-in-law Elin (and Charles H.) Bennett of Petit Manan Point, Maine; a grandson, Richard Arden Barton Jr, of Moretown, and a granddaughter, JoEllen Marie Barton of Waitsfield; nephews and nieces, Greg (and Janet) Lemnah, Nadine (and Lance) Wells, Arthur (and Carol) Bell, Cheryl Bell, and a grand niece Kira Lemnah.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, July 21, at 1:00 at the Irasville cemetery in Waitsfield. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Richard and Bonnie Barton's home on the Old County Road following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Council on Aging, 30 Washington Street, Barre, Vermont 05641.

Evelyn Mae Heise

January 9, 2003

Evelyn Mae Heise, 85, passed away peacefully at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, Vermont on December 24, 2002. Born in Hamlin, New York on January 17, 1917, she was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Kelso) Hendershot. She was married to Bernard Heise on August 23, 1938 and they shared many wonderful years together as educators in Newark, New York, at their summer cottage on Seneca Lake and after retirement in Fayston, Vermont.

Mrs. Heise attended school in Brockport, New York and taught kindergarten for many years in Newark and Lyons, New York. An avid archer, she was inducted into the New York Field Archers and Bow Hunters Hall of Fame after she and her husband developed a Bow Hunter Education Program in 1977 that has since been established in 47 states and five Canadian provinces.

Following her husband's passing Mrs. Heise moved to Waterbury, Vermont in 1986 where she made many friends as a member of the Waterbury Congregational Church and through her volunteer activities with the Waterbury Senior citizens and the Emerald Rebekah Lodge #33.

In her retirement years, Evelyn spent happy times cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in Fayston, attending her grandchildren's hockey games and enjoying friends at her camp at Sand Dunes in Colchester.

She leaves her son Donald and daughter-in-law Beverly of Calais; her son William and daughter-in-law Carol of Colchester, and five grandchildren Eric, Chad, Stefan, Coby and Johanna who gave her great joy. One of eight children, Evelyn leaves a number of relatives in the Hilton, New York area. She asked that any memorial gifts be sent to the Waterbury Senior Citizens, the Emerald Rebekah Lodge #33 in Waterbury, or to the charity of one's choice.

Audrey Jean Murphy

January 2, 2003

Audrey Jean Murphy, 75, passed away Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, with her loving family by her side.

Born on September 23, 1927 in Saratoga Springs, New York, she was the youngest of twelve children of Harry and Amelia (Swanson) Wolcott.

On May 13, 1951, after a winter working together at the Ram in Sun Valley, Idaho, she married the love of her life, Jack Murphy, in Saratoga Springs. He passed away on September 20, 1982.

Audrey and Jack moved to Fayston, Vermont in 1953, where Jack became general manager of Mad River Glen ski area and she was Tex Thompson's right-hand girl in the Basebox. In 1960, after Jack and their close friend Damon Gadd founded Sugarbush Valley Resort, the family moved to Moretown, where she lived until her passing. Alongside Jack, she owned and operated Jack Murphy's Golf Range, a Saratoga Springs landmark, for over fifty years.

She also volunteered countless hours with the Moretown PTA, read to children at the Bundy School and was the official Moretown Mets scorekeeper for a number of years.

Among her many interests besides her enduring love for Jack and her family were her beautiful and bountiful gardens, her swimming pool, where the entire neighborhood was always welcome, her beloved Atlanta Braves and Montreal Canadians, and her many birdfeeders, where the best fed birds in the world often stopped.

She is survived by her children Michael of Moretown; Chris and his wife Sandy of Underhill; Kelly and her husband Jack Wood of Moretown and Casey and his fiancée Lyndy Cummings of Fayston; the greatest joys of her life, her grandsons Kyle and John of Underhill and granddaughter Avery of Fayston; her brother Willard of Camden, New York; her sisters Ferne Wolcott of New Orleans, Louisiana and Joyce Lampert of Porters Corners, New York, and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her closest friend and confidante, Rett Wimble.

Visitation was held at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Monday, December 30, 2002 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place this spring in the Mountain View cemetery in Moretown. Memorial gifts may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vermont 05641 or to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, PO Box 305, Waitsfield, Vermont 05673.
