Edward C. "Bunker" Wimble

March 6, 2003

Edward C. "Bunker" Wimble, 77, passed away following a long illness with his family at his side in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. Born in Burlington on November 26, 1925, he was the son of the late Claude and Reta Wimble. On January 16, 1954, he married the former Rett Backus in Moretown.

Bunker attended Waitsfield High School and at the age of 17, enlisted in the US Navy. He served on the USS Inch in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater. He received the WWII Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the Vermont National Defense Medal. He was a member of the Mar River Valley American Legion Post 75.

He worked as a truck driver for many years for several firms in the Mad River Valley retiring in 1988 from the Town of Moretown. He had also worked several years for the Waitsfield Cemeteries. Since his retirement, Bunker enjoyed gardening and lawn care. An avid sports enthusiast, he took particular enjoyment in following the New York Yankees' success.

Bunker was very proud of his Vermont heritage. He had a gruff exterior but a warm and genuine heart. He was affectionately called "Grumpy" by his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years; their children, Merrie-Beth Wimble of Waitsfield, Kendall Wimble and his wife, Lorraine of Waitsfield, and Jamey Wimble of Fayston; 5 grandchildren, Natasha, Linda, Anne, A.J., and Tabor; 4 great-grandchildren, Alicia, Hannah, Ashley and Nico; a sister, Sally Tremblay of Waitsfield; 2 brothers, Owen Wimble Sr. and his wife, Doris of Waitsfield, Calvin Wimble and his wife, Norma of Waitsfield; 2 sister-in-laws, Lydia Wimble of Waitsfield and Dorthy Wimble of Bowman, PA; as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 8 siblings, Sylvia, Kathleen, Caroline, Hannah, Kenneth, Robert, Leo and Donald.

Inurnment will take place in the Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph Center this spring, Memorial contributions may be made to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Wesley A. Rutledge

March 6, 2003

Wesley A. Rutledge - 80, passed away in Morrisville Center, Genesis Eldercare, on Friday, February 28, 2003. Born in Danville on September 13, 1922, he was the son of the late Ressie Rutledge Dubrey and Willis H. Church. He married Theresa Charity Bunnell on January 28, n1941. Mrs. Rutledge passed away on July 10, 1981.

Wesley worked in drilling and blasting for road construction during the building season. During the off-season he was employed farming, sugaring and hauling wood. He enjoyed hunting, fishing as well as singing, playing the guitar and harmonica. He attended the Moretown United Methodist Church and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury.

He is survived by a daughter, Penny Cuatt of Wappingers, NY; three sons, Joe Rutledge of Duxbury, Lyman Rutledge of Seville, FL and Gary Rutledge of Waterbury; and 15 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two children Jerry Rutledge and Shelia Damon.

A memorial service will be held from the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at 11 a.m. Later inurnment will take place in the Mountain View cemetery, Moretown. Memorial contributions may be made to Morrisville Center-Genesis Eldercare, Patient Activities Fund, 72 Harrel St., Morrisville 05661.

Aimee Elyce Masters

February 20, 2003

September 1, 1919 to January 19, 2003

Aimee Elyce Masters , after enduring a long and often painful illness with grace, dignity and courage, died in her home in Pembroke, Bermuda of heart failure on January 19, 2003 at the age of 83.

A resident of Pembroke, Bermuda, Aimee was born in Brooklyn, New York, September 1, 1919 to the late Harriett (Stuart) Schroeder and the late Charles Schroeder. She was six months old when her parents brought her to Bermuda. She attended Bermuda High School and enjoyed horseback riding.

Aimee Schroeder married the late William Stowe Masters Jr. on June 14, 1939 in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Aimee and her late husband normally enjoyed six weeks of the spring and fall at their Warren condominium.

Aimee Masters is survived by her son William Stuart Masters of Warren, daughter Pamela Aimee Masters Langton of Bermuda, daughter-in-law Mrs. Virginia Masters, son-in-law Charles Langton; grandchildren Stuart Lawrence Joblin, Shelley Elyce Langton, Jamie Lynn Masters, Kevin William Masters, Amberly Masters and Lauren Elyce Masters.

Services for Mrs. Masters were held on January 24, 2003 in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Patrick Bligh Kelly

February 20, 2003

Patrick Bligh Kelly was born February. 10, 1945 and died after many months of fighting cancer on January 20, 2003.

He leaves behind his parents, Roy and Jean Kelly of Chevy Chase, Maryland; his son Sean Patrick Kelly of Silver Springs, Maryland; his loving sister Liz Kelly of White Marine, Minnesota; his step-daughters Rose Wilkinson of Schroon Lake, New York; Mary LaRock and Tina LaRock of Barre, and his six step-grand daughters Catherine Rose LaRock, Christina LaRock, Candace LaRock, all of Barre, Crystal LaRock, Angela LaRock of Schroon Lake, New York and Jessica Farnham of Barre.

He will also be missed by many loving friends: Diane Henderson of McClean, Virginia, Joni Smith of Lewes, Delaware, Lee Gigliotti and Loretta Desjardins of McClean, Virginia.

He is predeceased by his stepdaughter, Diane Barton (LaRock), and her son, Eric.

I feel very fortunate to have shared a part of my life with Pat Kelly... he was a good man... as all of us, he made his mistakes, but he always tried to do the best he could. I am thankful to have known him and was able to call him my friend for many years.

I pray that our Lord is keeping Pat safe in His arms now.

Krayna Goldwarg

February 20, 2003

Krayna Goldwarg, 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Thursday, February 13, 2003 in Montréal, Canada.

Although Krayna was born and raised in Montréal, The Valley had been her second home for the last 40 years. Krayna was an avid skier and golfer, and loved nothing better than to share her love of the mountain and the golf course with her family and friends.

Krayna is survived by her devoted husband, Saul, by her son, Eliot and his wife Betty of Montréal; and their two daughters, Nancy Berger and her husband Jeff, of Burlington, and Paula Hannon and her husband Matthew of New Canaan, Connecticut and her seven grandchildren: Eric, Jordan, Matthew, Lindsay, Adam, Seth and Marina.

A private memorial service will be held in the spring.

For those who wish, memorial contributions in honor of Krayna may be made to the King Street Area Youth Program, 87 King Street, Burlington, Vermont, 05401.

Dr. Thomas E. Thompson

February 20, 2003

Dr. Thomas E. Thompson, who celebrated his 100 birthday in Warren this summer, died peacefully in his sleep on February 8, 2003. Fondly remembered as 'Tommy, the World's Oldest Golfer', he kept his wits, spirit and humor until the very end. Tommy lived in Shelburne for the last 15 years, and was a regular at the Kwiniaska Golf Course where his recent hole-in-one is memorialized. Tommy visited The Valley often to see his family and to play at Sugarbush until well into his nineties.

Equally a lover of bridge, in winter he joined a weekly duplicate bridge game in Burlington. At age 95, Tommy learned to use a computer and correspond by e-mail, signing off as TT.com. He was active in the Terraces Resident Association and wrote a regular column, "News from the Terraces," for the Shelburne News.

Prior to moving to Vermont, Tommy Thompson practiced dentistry in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan until the age of 82. He served during the 1960s as the Grand Master of the dental fraternity, Delta Sigma Delta. In this capacity, he traveled the world, accompanied by his late wife Adelaide.

Tommy is survived by his daughters Jane Schneider and Mary Moffroid, their husbands Peter and Pierre, his grandchildren Eric and wife Jen, Benjamin, Greg and wife Megan, Dan, and Julia, and his great-grandchildren Isabel and Calvin Moffroid. Tommy will be missed by his family and others who knew him and cherished his wit and wisdom.

E. Donald Benoit

February 13, 2003

E. Donald Benoit, 84, of Waitsfield passed away in the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, February 4, 2003. Born in Sheldon on April 15, 1918, he was the son of the late Alphonse and Victoria (Elie) Benoit.

Don attended schools in Canada and Sheldon. As a young man, he worked as a farmer in Sheldon for several years prior to coming to Waitsfield with his parents and siblings.

He was employed as a milk tester by the Vermont Dairy Herd Improvement Association, retiring July 28, 1996, following 471/2 years of dedicated service. He received the DHIA Supervisor Award for dedicated service and the Efficient Production Award from the National Dairy Products Corp.

The Catholic Church was fundamental in Don's life. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick Church in Moretown, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, an adult altar server and sacristan for funeral services and weekend Masses.

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Monique Benoit of New York City; and a nephew, Andre Benoit and his wife, Christina, and their daughter, Emily, of Monroe, Connecticut. He was predeceased by a brother, Gerard Benoit, and a sister, Ida Benoit.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from St. Patrick Church in Moretown on February 8 at 10 a.m. Interment will be this spring in Mountain View cemetery in Moretown. Expressions of sympathy may be sent c/o Dorothy Peck, 2367 North Road, Waitsfield, Vermont 05673. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers would be appreciated to St. Patrick Church Building Fund, c/o St. Andrew's Rectory, 109 S. Main Street, Waterbury, Vermont 05676.

Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home, Waterbury.

Shirley Mae Pierce

February 13, 2003

Shirley Mae Pierce, 62, of Warren passed away with her family at her side in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Thursday, February 6, 2003. Born in Pittsfield on November 18, 1940, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Ruth (Barrett) Larmie. She was previously married to Elwin Pierce.

Shirley was a 1958 graduate of Whitcomb High School. As a young woman, she worked at National Life Insurance Comapny. She later was employed at G.W. Plastics in Bethel and then for many years by the Weyerhaeuser Company in Rochester. For 23 years, Shirley worked in housekeeping at the Sugarbush Inn and most recently for Mac's Convenience Store as a clerk.

Her leisure time was spent enjoying crossword puzzles and search-a-word puzzles, but particularly spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandson. She had been a member of the AARP.

Survivors include her longtime companion, Theodore McAllister of Warren, her six children, Joanne LaRock and Tina Grandfield both of Fayston, Sherri Armstrong and Renee Pierce both of Waitsfield, Gregory Pierce and Troy McAllister both of Waterbury; 10 grandchildren, Sammi Farnham, Michael LaRock, Kimberly LaRock, Elizabeth Pierce, Jesse Pierce, Jacob Grandfield, Shawn Armstrong, Tanner Grandfield, Taylor Armstrong, and Melanie Armstrong; great-grandson, Cooper Farnham; two sisters, Lois Lambert of Stockbridge and Doris Luce of Warren; two brothers, David Larmie of Lancaster Pennsylvania and Louis Larmie Jr. of Ephrata Pennsylvania; nieces and nephews. A brother, Robert Larmie, and a sister, Louise Cole, predeceased her.

A memorial service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held from the Warren United Church on Monday at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Arrangements are in care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Dorothy Lora Boardman Carpenter

February 13, 2003

Dottie passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on February 6, 2003 after a long illness. She was soon to be 80. Born February 17, 1923, the daughter of Augustus and Edlena (Fiske) Boardman of Chelsea. Dottie was one of thirteen children.

Previously married to Jack Wallace and Dr. Theodore P. Murphy. She married George Carpenter on November 8, 1953. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, children Ann Marie Carlyle, Bonita Rae Barton, Marla Durham, George Jr.; grandchildren, Dion Carlyle, Mona McCain, Marnie Defreest, Melanie Rutledge, Jerri Lamson, Robert Aylward Jr., Dean Paul Aylward, Scott Aylward, Rick Barton, JoEllen Barton, and Jasmine Carpenter. Dorothy had seventeen great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Alona Litwack, Hilda Rogers and Selma Walker and one of her special boys, Nate Wells. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Wallace (Aylward), and good friend and confidant Bertha Tucker.

Dorothy was an innovator and entrepreneur, establishing the Carpenter Farm Ski Lodge in 1963, with a capacity of 150 guests. Famous for her homemade bread, pies and chocolate cake, Dorothy was mostly found in the kitchen, surrounded by guests.

Dottie loved George's dry humor, granddaughter Jasmine, and her menagerie of unusual pets. George and Dorothy spent hours playing dominos, scrabble, puzzles, and crosswords. She loved a good political debate, and was a supporter of any underdog.

She and her siblings loved singing and dancing and Dottie performed in the local minstrel shows.

Services and internment will be in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations of volunteer time or money may be made to your local hospice organization, such as the Central Vermont Hospice or Home Health Agency.

Carlyle E. Livingston

January 30, 2003

Carlyle E. Livingston, formerly of Waitsfield, passed away at the Rowan Court Health & Rehabilitation Center on January 21, 2003. He was born September 26, 1932 son of Robert R. Livingston and Mamie Livingston.

Carlyle Livingston lived with and worked for Maurice and Irene Spaulding and Donald and Laurie Spaulding on their Waitsfield dairy farm from 1969 through 1991. Previously he had also worked on the Edward and Alleen Eurich and Everett and Kathryn Palmer farms in Waitsfield. He was an avid reader, especially of the Reader's Digest, an expert at "Find-a-Word" puzzlers, and a sport's enthusiast, especially enjoying professional wrestling and his beloved Boston Red Sox baseball team.

Having and active social life, he looked forward to enjoying his many friends on a Saturday night out at Gallagher's or other evening spots in the Mad River Valley. He enjoyed Sundays at a matinee movie followed by his favorite cheeseburger and fries at the Den Restaurant. Before residing at Rowan Court, he lived for a number of years at the Four Seasons in Northfield.

He is predeceased by his brothers, Sterling, Melvin, Otto, Julius, and Arnold; his sister, Gertrude, and a twin brother and sister, Dalton and Flossie, who died at birth. He is survived by his brother, Stanley, of Otis, Colorado and his sister, Shirley Fuller, of Pawcatuck, Connecticut. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no calling hours. A grave site memorial service will be held in the spring at the Waitsfield Village cemetery with additional notice to be given in the future.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, the Carlyle Memorial Fund at the Joslin Memorial Library for sports magazines or a fund of the donor's choice.

Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.
