Scott D. Patterson

January 23, 2003

Scott D. Patterson, 34, a longtime law enforcement officer and former resident of Duxbury, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Berlin on January 18, 2003. Born in Berlin on October 29, 1968, he was the son of Edwin and Maureen (Corse) Patterson.

September 23, 1994, he married the former Jennifer Keysar in Roxbury.

Scott was a 1986 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury, where he played basketball and baseball. Following graduation, he was employed at National Life Insurance Company in Montpelier.

In 1992, Scott began his career in law enforcement with the Waterbury Village Police Department, first as a part-time officer and then full time from 1994 to 1998. Being in law enforcement wasn't a job to Scott, it was a vocation to which he dedicated his life. While serving in Waterbury, he founded the Neighborhood Watch Program and a K-9 Unit. Part of a pilot program in 1999, a 2-1/2year-old German shepherd named "Jerry Lee" became Scott's very best friend and partner in solving crimes. Together, they searched for missing persons, fleeing criminals, did evidence detection and provided protection for each other.

Scott was presented the prestigious Legion Heroism Award by the Vermont American Legion. He worked as part of the DUI Enforcement Team for the Washington County Sheriff's Department from 1999-2001 and, most recently, he was employed by the Hartford Police Department starting in March 2001.

Physical fitness was important in his life. He enjoyed weightlifting, exercise, baseball and softball, in which he annually participated in the Gaboury Memorial Softball Tournament sponsored by the Vermont State Police and the Torch Run for the Special Olympics. In 1987, he began competing in the Vermont Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament and was a four-time champion in the 132-pound weight class from 1988-1992. He also enjoyed hunting. He was a member of the Waterbury Village Volunteer Fire Department.

Spending time with his family and children was always his priority.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; their two children, Emily Nicole Patterson and Trevor Scott Patterson, all of Berlin; his parents of Duxbury; his paternal grandmother, Ramona Patterson of Duxbury; a brother, Mark Patterson of Mount Juliet, Tennessee; and nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and his beloved partner, "Jerry Lee."

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Waterbury on Thursday, January 23, at 10 a.m. Friends are invited to visit at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Later interment will take place in Holy Cross cemetery in Duxbury.

The family would appreciate that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Banknorth, c/o Margaret Henry, P.O. Box 360, Waterbury, 05676, to be held in trust for Scott's children.

Leslie Fulton Flemer

July 3, 2003

Leslie Fulton Flemer died peacefully in Naples, Florida on June 24, 2003, at age 74. Born in Chicago on January 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Darrow Bruce Fulton and the late Anna Wrenn Fulton. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Stevenson Flemer, who passed away in 1997.

Leslie attended the Chicago Latin School and graduated from St. Timothy's School, Catonsville, Maryland, in 1946.

Although she adored learning, Leslie chose to forego a formal college education as a young woman, in favor of extensive travel throughout Europe. Pages and pages of handwritten notes about cities, churches, and museums attest to the scholarly energy with which she explored these places. Italy was the country which was to call to her most deeply, with the city of Florence claiming a significant piece of her heart.

In 1960 Leslie met Stevenson Flemer, who was teaching architecture at the University of Chicago.

Both Steve and Leslie immediately recognized the other as "the one." Both felt strongly that they were meant to marry, which they soon did. In 1963, they moved to Waitsfield, where Steve started his architectural business, and the couple began raising a family.

Always a believer in the importance of strong friendship, Leslie and Steve enjoyed many warm moments at the Saddle Club, as well as at the homes of so many treasured friends who, like them, had recently settled in The Valley. As her children grew, so did Leslie's involvement in the community, notably in the growth of the Waitsfield Elementary School.

Her sharp mind was consistently challenged by the bridge skills of many cherished woman friends in the Mad River Valley.

Indeed, although Leslie was happily settled in Florida at the end of her life, she never stopped missing her Waitsfield "bridge ladies."

Leslie is survived by her three loving children, Steve Flemer Jr. of Burlington, Wrenn Flemer Compere and her husband Yves of Waitsfield, and Benjamin Flemer, also of Waitsfield. She is also survived by her devoted grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Oskar Flemer, Iris Downey-Plotnick, Nicolas, Julie, Anna and Pierre Compere, as well as by her beloved nieces and nephews Adine Storer, Douglas Fulton, and Georgina Fulton, all of Massachusetts.

A memorial service will be held at the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mad River Valley Community Fund.

Harry L. Keown Jr.

May 15, 2003

Harry L. Keown Jr., of Stone Harbor, New Jersey and Waitsfield, Vermont passed away on May 1, 2003 at his son's home in Vermont. Both of his sons were with him and he died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes. He was 85.

Harry was born in June of 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he attended grade school and graduated with honors from West Philadelphia High School. He met his eventual wife, Doris Marie Craig in the first grade. They knew each other for 75 years and were married for almost sixty years before Doris' passing in 1999. They had two sons, Craig, of Waitsfield, Vermont and Gary, of the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

An exemplary member of the "Greatest Generation," Harry went to the Second World War as a company radio operator for the Pennsylvania 29th Division. He entered France in the first wave on Omaha Beach. After the successful invasion, the 29th fought through the hedgerows to capture the Normandy peninsula. Harry was the first allied soldier to enter the German submarine pens at Brest. Eventually, the 29th attacked their way through the infamous Siegfried Line into Germany until V-E Day. Along the way, Harry lost four company commanders while he was carrying their radio and was decorated numerous times for gallantry in the face of horrific enemy fire. After the German surrender, Harry served as a provost martial in Bremerhaven, ensuring the civil authority and peace.

Before the war, Harry had gone to work for E.I. Dupont de Nemours, Inc. on the day after he graduated from high school, reflecting on his capacity as a provider, particularly during the Great Depression. After coming home from the war, he returned to that job and remained for thirty-five years while raising his family, buying a home, sending his sons off to private school and higher education. He exemplified hard work, kindness, humor and regard for others, hallmarks of the "Greatest Generation."

Harry is survived by his sons, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom he knew and saw as recently as April. A memorial service is planned at graveside at the Veteran's cemetery in Cape May Courthouse, New Jersey beside his beloved Doris. Plans will be announced in advance due to the desire of relatives residing in Australia to attend. This very special man will be greatly missed by his family, relatives and many close friends.
