Winn Morrell

July 31, 2003

Winn Morrell, 85, quietly passed away at her home in Warren July 28, 2003. Winn was born in Paterson, New Jersey in 1918 to Phillip C. Morrell and Esther Edelson. Her father became one of the pioneers of Florida citrus agriculture and a leader in the cooperative movement. Her mother was an early leader for women's suffrage and worker's rights giving speeches at political rallies across the country.

Winn graduated from George School in 1934 and earned a degree in political science at Florida State College for Women during the depression. After WWII Winn and her husband moved to Alexandria, Virginia where she was active with JFK's election committee, the National Symphony, and civil rights. She was proud to have attended the Washington rally where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. She later received a master's degree from UMass in Amherst and became a clinical and research psychologist. After a short time at Yale, she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where she worked as a psychologist and volunteered with many progressive organizations.

She was one of the very first members of the National Organization of Women in Boston. In the early 1970's she helped found the first Women's Bank in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At that time, banks would not give car loans, home mortgages, or business loans to women, without the signature of their father, husband or brother. The new Bank grew rapidly and after about a year all the bigger banks started making loans to women on their own signatures.

Winn was also one of the founding members of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She had always wanted to be a physicist and kept a lifelong interest in all fields of knowledge and science. She read The New York Times every day for the last 60 years and was always ready for a discussion on any topic. Two years ago a particle physicist came to dinner and Winn was so happy to hear about the latest in that field she was buzzing about it for days. Her friend Carol reminded friends and family that Winn had told her that the greatest thing she had learned in her long life was that one can always change.

Winn bought property in Warren in 1962 when German Flats Road was a one lane jeep track and it was necessary to ford Slide Brook. She spent vacations in The Valley and in 1983 she bought a house and moved up to Warren to be a grandmother, a role she relished, making good friends with her granddaughter's friends as well. Throughout her life Winn supported human rights and social justice causes and in 2002, Winn founded the P.C. Morrell Family Foundation to honor her father and to make grants to organizations that help women and children.

Winn is survived by her son, Tom Barefoot and his wife Joni Zweig of Warren, Vermont, her granddaughter Madhurii Barefoot of Hailey, Idaho, her nephew David Cruden of Mt. Vernon, New Hampshire, and her godson, Jan Manent from Paris. Friends and family will all miss her. She was a class act.

Instead of a memorial service, Winn asked for her friends to gather at her house to celebrate her life on Saturday, August 16 at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the P.C. Morrell Family Foundation at P.O. Box 510, Waitsfield, VT 05673.
