Abraham L. Miller

October 9, 2003

Abraham L. "Lanny" Miller, 57, of White City, Oregon, passed away following a long illness at the Veterans Administration Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center in White City on October 2, 2003. Born in Hartford, Connecticut on March 6, 1946, he was the son of the late Clifton R. Sr. and Helen (Stokier) Miller.

Abraham attended Westport (New York) Central School. He served with the U.S. Army in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969 as a member of the 173rd Airborne Division. He worked as an under water pipe welder for most of his life throughout the United States. Most recently, he was a mail clerk for VA Rehabilitation Center in White City.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting in the Adirondacks during his youth and continued that love in Oregon. He also enjoyed model making and coin collecting.

He is survived by his daughter, Elaine Walton and her husband, J. Michael and their children, Jared, Braden, Seth, and Riley, all of Duluth, Georgia; his sisters and brothers, Arline Hughes of Worcester, Vermont, Ralph C. Miller of Westfield, Massachusetts, Marianne Moore of West Palm Beach, Florida, Marietta Caladim of Latham, New York, Clifton Miller of Winooski, Helene Fleury of Westport, New York, Evelyn Crogan of Ettrick, Wisconsin, and Raymond Miller of Morrisville; as well as many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Also surviving are his many friends and the caring and generous staff at the VA facility in Oregon.

A military funeral will be held from the Waitsfield (VT) Common cemetery on October 13, 2003 at 11 a.m. There will be no calling hours. Barbara Truax Izzo

October 9, 2003

Barbara Truax Izzo, 77, of George's Way, Waterbury Center, passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Sunday, October 5, 2003. Born in Dunkin P.Q. Canada on June 28, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Otis and Lila (Sargent) Truax. On August 29, 1947, she married George Izzo in Waterbury. Mr. Izzo passed away on November 27, 1995.

Barb was a graduate of Whitcomb High School in Bethel. She was employed by the state of Vermont in the Tax Department and with the Agency of Human Services for many years. Probably best known for her musical talents, Barb spent over 50 years as a guitarist and vocalist, traveling throughout Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Quebec playing with her brother Bud's band, Buddy Truax and the Playboys.

An active volunteer, Barb worked on blood drawing for the American Red Cross in Waterbury, was a driver for the Council on Aging and the Visually Impaired, and volunteered at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center and the Central Vermont Medical Center. An avid golfer, she was member of the Blush Hill Country Club in Waterbury and was a champion of many Ladies State Day Tournaments held throughout the state. Her other memberships included Wesley United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women of Waterbury, and the VFW Auxiliary Unit 792 of Montpelier. Her leisure time was spent cooking, sewing as well as being an avid quilter and knitter.

Barb is survived by her children, Susan Johnson and her husband, Johnie, of Waterbury Center and G. Douglas Izzo of Boston Massachusetts; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a brother, Sheldon "Bud" Truax of Waterbury; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A celebration of Barbara's life will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Sunday at 1 p.m. Inurnment will follow in the Waterbury Center cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Waterbury Ambulance Service, PO Box 95, Waterbury Center, VT 05677 or to the American Lung Association of Vermont, 30 Farrell Street, South Burlington, VT 05403-9987. Nancy W. Clark

October 9, 2003

Nancy W. Clark, 83, of Clark Road, Fayston, passed away at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Thursday, October 2, 2003. Born in Winchester, Massachusetts on May 19, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Grafton E. and Marion (Flint) Wentworth. On June 1, 1947, she married Allen W. Clark Jr. in Wonalancet New Hampshire. Mr. Clark passed away on January 23, 1997.

Nancy was a 1938 graduate of Reading (Massachusetts) High School. Moving to New Hampshire, she was employed as the second cook at the Pinkham Base Lodge for the Appalachian Mountain Club for several years. Following her marriage to Allen, they moved to the Mad River Valley where they established The Clark's Ski Lodge on Route 17 in Fayston (now known as Mountain View Inn), selling the business and retiring in 1974. Nancy remained busy and enjoyed her time as a homemaker.

Her memberships included the Mountain Gardeners in Waitsfield. She was a longtime member of the Waitsfield Federated Church (now UCC), was a Justice of the Peace and member of the Board of Civil Authority in Fayston, and was a member of the Weaving Guild. Nancy volunteered her time as a dispatcher for the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, for the American Red Cross and the Pan-Mass Challenge Bike-A-Thon to raise monies for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Her leisure time was spent enjoying weaving, knitting, gardening, cooking, reading and traveling with her husband.

Nancy is survived by her children, David F. R. Clark and his wife, Patricia, of Waitsfield, and Thomas W. Clark and his wife, Leigh, of Fayston; her grandchildren, Hilary Clark and Brooks Clark; two sisters, Marjory Wentworth of Reading, Massachusetts and Marsha Hendrick of Greenville North Carolina; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Celebration of Nancy's life will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Thursday, October 9, 2003 at 1 p.m. Private inurnment will take place in the Bragg Hill cemetery in Fayston. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, PO Box 305, Waitsfield VT 05673, or to the Mountain Gardeners, 2240 Main Street, Waitsfield VT 05673. Geraldine B. Gallagher

1929 - 2003

Geraldine B. Gallagher, 74, of Vermont Route 2, Waterbury, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in Calais following several years of declining health on Tuesday, September 23, 2003. Born in Waterbury on July 23, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Irene Blay. On December 25, 1947, she married Norris P. Gallagher in Moretown. Mr. Gallagher passed away on May 16, 2000.

Geraldine attended Waterbury High School. She was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury as a nurse's aide for 14 years as well as assisted her husband in his contracting business. Her leisure time was spent enjoying sewing, knitting, crocheting and being a homemaker.

Geraldine is survived by her three children, Wanda Deane of Calais, John C. Gallagher of Moretown and Robert P. Gallagher of Waterbury; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Radcliff of Newport News, Virginia; as well as a niece and nephew.

Friends and family gathered at Geraldine's home at 1634 US Route 2 in Waterbury on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. Inurnment took place at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center on Monday, September 29, 2003 at 9 a.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Jessie V. Pierce

August 12, 2004

Jessie V. Pierce of Plymouth, Massachusetts, died August 6, 2004 at age 89. She was the widow of Burnard A. Pierce; mother of Suzanne J. Corthell of Waitsfield, Vermont and the late Ronald B. Pierce; grandmother of Ronald Kilgour, Colorado; Keith and Tina Pierce of MA and Robin Mottram of California. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren.

At the family's request, all services will be private. The Magoun-Biggins Funeral home assisted the Pierce family with arrangements.

Cheryl Anne Robinson

July 29, 2004

Cheryl Anne Robinson, 54, of Warren, died Monday, July 26, 2004 at her home.

She was born July 2, 1950 in Randolph, VT; the daughter of Robert and Prudence (Manning) Shepard. She was raised and attended school in Rochester, VT. She was married to Robert Robinson on July 6, 1968 in Rochester, and lived there until moving to Warren in 1975. Cheryl had been a housekeeper at Sugarbush Village Association, and enjoyed knitting, bird feeding, flower gardening, and reading.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Robinson Sr. of Warren; sons, Robert Robinson Jr. and Brian Robinson, both of Warren; daughter, Brenda Briggs of Northfield Falls, Vermont; brothers, Gerald Shepard and Richard Shepard of Rochester, VT; sisters, Linda Shepard of Rochester, VT and Helen Martin of MA; four grandchildren, Kelli and Jessica Robinson, and Matthew and Zachary Briggs. She was predeceased by her brother Larry, and sister Irene Ashley.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 30, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be from 9:30 a.m. Friday until service time at the funeral home. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Mad River Valley Ambulance, Waitsfield, VT 05673. Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

James "Jimbo" Bryant

July 29, 2004

James R. "Jimbo" Bryant, 22, of German Flats Road in Warren, died Monday, July 26, at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington.

He was born September 10, 1981 in Landstuhl, Germany to James R. Bryant and Denise (Daly) Bryant.

He was a 1999 graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre. He was a finish carpenter working in the Central Vermont area. He enjoyed hiking, snowboarding and being outdoors, He was a member of the St. Monica Parish.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather Edward Ferrari, Jr. of Barre; his sister Jenny Bryant Donahue and her husband, Jeffrey and their children, Madison, Isaak and Marshall, all of Williamstown; paternal grandparents, Edward and Suzanne Ferrari, Sr. of Barre; a special aunt, Virginia Daly of Lowell, Massachusetts, three special cousins, Michael, Michelle and Erin of Concord, Massachusetts; and other uncles, aunts and cousins.

His father predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2004, in St. Monica Church. Burial will follow in Hope cemetery.

Friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street in Barre on Thursday, July 29, from 6 to 8 p.m..

Elizabeth Ann Kirkwood Selley

Elizabeth Ann Kirkwood Selley

Elizabeth Ann Kirkwood Selley, 64, passed away peacefully at her home on Palmer Hill Road in Waitsfieldd on Saturday evening, July 17, 2004. Born in Kitchener, Ontario on October 21, 1939, she was the daughter of Elizabeth (May) Tinnes and the late Michael Tinnes. On July 23, 1988, she married D. Colin Selley in Bermuda. Elizabeth was previously married to David Michael Kirkwood.

Elizabeth is survived by her husband, Colin of Waitsfield and Bermuda; her mother of Waterloo, Ontario; her children, Cynthia Kirkwood of New York City, and Jeffrey Kirkwood of Toronto, Ontario; a sister, Jane Tinnes of Toronto, Ontario; a brother, Robert Tinnes of Cambridge, Ontario; as well as an aunt, Herta Patrick of Middletown, Delaware, and an uncle, Edward May of Waterloo, Ontario.

Elizabeth moved to Bermuda in 1968 and has traveled extensively worldwide. She and Colin reside in both Waitsfield and Bermuda and will be missed and fondly remembered by her family and innumerable friends. She has lived with cancer for the past six years, leading a very active life until the time of her death. A collector for many years, Elizabeth owned Old Scrag Antiques in Waitsfield.

Elizabeth requested cremation, with her ashes to be spread in her gardens in Waitsfield and Bermuda. Memorial services will be private. Joseph Preziosi

July 15, 2004

Joseph Preziosi passed away unexpectedly on July 10, 2004 at the hospital in Palm Beach Gardens. Joe was a ski instructor at Sugarbush in the late 70's and a friend to many residents here in The Valley.

Born July 3,1954 in Orange, NJ he is survived by his parents, sister and brother, nephews, and his dog "Jenny". Services are at the Boynton Memorial Chapel, 800 West Boynton Beach Blvd, Boynton Beach, Florida 33426. A memorial service is planned on Friday, July 16, at 11:00 a.m.

Erica Suzanne Backman

Erica Suzanne Backman, born February 14, 1979, died July 2, 2004 from an accidental drowning. Erica was born and raised in Ilion, NY, graduated from Venice High School, in Venice, FL and later went on to earn a degree in Massage Therapy.

Erica had an incredible and contagious love for life that greatly touched all of those she encountered. Of all her many joys, her greatest was her three children. Although her life here with us was much too short, her well blossomed spirit will live on forever in all of us.

She is survived by her three beautiful children, Lincoln, Tria, and Kenya Backman-Lowe and their father David Lowe; her loving parents, Gary and Ellen Backman; her brother Brad and sister Darcy and brother-in-law Chris Herron; grandmother, Joyce Backman; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends who she met and touched along the way. She is predeceased by her beloved grandparents Gordon and Joyce Morse and Roy Backman.

Earl J. Rivers

Earl J. Rivers, 79, husband of Eunice (Pecor) Rivers of Norwich, died June 24, 2004 at Hamilton Rehabilitation Center. Born on June 9, 1925 in Plainfield, Vermont, he was the son of the late Earl W. and Bertha (Nichols) Rivers.

As a young man, Earl worked for Fred Fisk in the lumber business in Williston. He then owned a dairy farm in Waitsfield for about 10 years. Following the sale of his farm, he was a custodian and school bus driver in Vermont prior to moving to Norwich where he then worked at Pratt and Whitney and then United Nuclear as a machinist until his retirement in the late 1980s.

On March 10, 1945 at St. Andrew's Church in Waterbury he was united in marriage to Eunice (Pecor) Rivers who survives along with two brothers, Lloyd Rivers of Murphys, CA., and Richard Rivers of Waitsfield, VT. Three sisters, Marion Rogers of Essex Junction, Doris Brochu of Deland, FL., and Theresa Rushford of Norwich. Also numerous nieces and nephews, and beloved Lucky.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Kenneth and Arthur Rivers, and a sister Irene Combs.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church in Norwichtown. Interment followed in St. Joseph cemetery.

Lorraine Lee Ford

Lorraine Lee Ford, 52, of Warren, passed away at her home on Monday, June 28, 2004, embraced by her family, following a long and valiant battle with cancer. Born in Montpelier on March 13, 1952, she was the daughter of Lyle E. and Bobbie (Rodgers) Ford. Her father, Lyle, passed away on April 11, 1986.

Lorraine was a 1970 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury. She was employed by Northern Power Systems of Waitsfield where she worked as an executive assistant to the president, and more recently in the marketing department, a career that spanned over 25 years. Lorraine was born in the 20th Century but her tastes and heart belonged to the Victorian era. A collector of Victorian furniture, mirrors, clothes, hats and so much more, her home and style was a reflection of a time that spoke to being both elaborate and beautiful.

Over the past several years, Lorraine developed a special and close relationship with Dan and Sayre Wardell and their children, MacKenzie and Tavish Wardell who she provided care for and held a special place in her heart. Viewed as a person whose beauty radiated both from within as well as physically, Lorraine enjoyed many friendships with people from all walks of life.

Lorraine is survived by her mother, Bobbie Rodgers and her husband, William, of Warren; two sisters, Leslie Brown, and her husband, Allen, of La Jolla CA, Luanne Ford of Brookline, MA; a brother, Lindol Ford, and his wife, Diane, of Waitsfield; and four nephews, Trevor Ford, Max Diamond, Jesse Diamond and Dan Brown. Other survivors include a step-sister, Diane Story, and her daughter, Jennifer, of Burlington; three step-brothers, Dan Story, and his wife, Erin, of Warren, Glenn Story, and his wife, Kelly, of Burlington, and Dean Story of Burlington.

Lorraine's family would like extend their appreciation for the wonderful and dedicated care given by her physician, Dr. Gerhild Bjornson and staff as well as two special caregivers, who also happen to be her cousins, Diane Gauthier and Sandra Brodeur.

Private graveside services will be held from the Warren Village cemetery. Christopher Murphy

Christopher Murphy, 47, of Underhill, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

He was born in Northfield, VT on November 9, 1956 the son of the late Jack and Audrey (Wolcott) Murphy. In 1978, Chris graduated with distinction from Johnson State College, receiving a B.A. in Environmental Studies and Business/Economics. On September 28, 1985 he married Sandra Hunter.

Chris has worked for the past 18 years as a salesman for Pete's RV Center in which he thoroughly enjoyed his opportunity to encourage others to embrace nature's abounding beauty that he so passionately enjoyed himself.

At the age of two, Chris began alpine skiing and soon developed a reputation for his exuberance towards skiing moguls with finesse. Matter a fact, he is known to many of his dear friends as "Moguls". Chris imparted his love for the mountains, snow, and all the wonders affiliated, to his two sons Kyle and John through memorable adventures such as skiing Tuckermans, backpacking the Long Trail, and watching sunsets. In addition, Chris enthusiastically shared his eternal love for golfing, camping, Nordic skiing, and above all bird watching with his family. Chris will be fondly remembered as an upbeat, kind, and gentle man who adored and cherished his family and many dear friends.

He is survived by his wife Sandra and their two sons Kyle and John of Underhill; two brothers, Casey and Lynda Murphy and their daughter Avery of North Fayston, and Michael Murphy of Saratoga Springs, NY, his sister Kelly Wood and her husband Jack of Moretown, his much loved family of in-laws; mother in-law Anita Hunter, brother and sister-in-laws; Beth Hunter, Deborah Palmer, Susan Hunter, Gregory Hunter, Michael Hunter, Brian Hunter, Timothy Hunter, Cheryl Hetrick, and Jennifer Luneau as well as their spouses and many children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church, Underhill. Interment will be held later at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Chris's memory may be made to: Vermont Cancer Center at the University of Vermont, 305 Health Science Research Facility, Burlington, VT 05405. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday, June 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home Mountain View Chapel, 68 Pinecrest Dr., Essex Junction.
